K, so Iron Sushi isn't the "end all, be all" of the Sushi kingdom - but it completely serves its purpose.
Was lured in here last night for a quick, sit-down dinner with one of my best friends. Why were we lured? There was a sign that explicitly promised us $3 sushi rolls and $3 house wine and beer. SOLD.
Yes, I realize that a special like this could potentially go one of two ways - hospitalization with salmonella or tummy indigestion OR "hey! That wasn't too bad! Yum!" - luckily for us our experience was the latter :D.
Environment wise this isn't a fancy, lavish restaurant. It's very simple, minimalistic and no frills. I wouldn't do like a first date or "special" milestone date here, but I'd totally come on any other type of date or group outting here.
Our sushi was fresh, nicely portioned, decently sized and pretty tasty - although each roll was $3 I don't feel like we were sacrificing real quality here, again Iron Sushi isn't Nobu, but it's not Duane Reade sushi (true story, they do that now - lol) or by all means even BAD.
I ordered a yellowtail & scallion roll, a tuna maki and a salmon maki roll which I asked for regular mayo and tempura flakes in it to add some dimension and they happily catered to my request without a problem. It's $.50 extra per roll if you want it made "inside-out" and it isn't already made that way - no biggie, just figured I'd mention in case anyone out there in Yelp-land is interested in that sort of thing...
My friend ordered a Boston roll, a spicy yellowtail scallion roll and something else which I believe had avocado in it. She was pleased and all of our rolls certainly served their purpose, were filling and pleasing to gorge on. We both went with the white wines - she had a chardonnay and I went the pinot grigio route - for $3 I was totally in my happy place.
My only gripe is that despite the restaurant being pretty empty and lifeless on a Wednesday evening around 6:40pm the wait time for us to receive the check and have our money/credit card picked up was pretty long, but that's only a minor observation and I'll most definitely be back when I've got a hankering for a sushi happy hour steal! :D
