20 Best Restaurants in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"Kaiseki, a kind of Japanese degustation menu with a strong seasonal focus, has lately taken root in Melbourne, and Ishizuka is doing it better than anyone. This is delicate, thoughtful food steeped in tradition and served in a humble 16-seat basement space in the CBD. No two nights here are the same, but some themes are consistent: seemingly low-key dishes may in fact be luxurious; the custards and jellies are transcendental; there's always a seafood soup; and the sashimi shows off local fish like snapper. Service here is an art form as finely calibrated as the kaiseki itself. Better yet, it's also utterly unobtrusive." - Dan F. Stapleton

This resturant is beyond amazing. The location is quite cool, being underground, and the atmosphere as soon as you walk in makes you feel like your part of something intimate and cool. Every single person we spoke to on the night was exceptional, very friendly and professional, and all of the little things like water refills were effortless. Now for the food! Prepare yourself, this will be a once in a lifetime kind of meal. Every dish is incredibly well thought out and complex, whilst also being generous. I was afraid we'd be hungry when we left, and I can assure you, that will not be the case! Highlights were the sweetbreads and the tuna, but everything was devine. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to dine here, and I will be back again for a very special occasion.

We were here six years ago and were impressed by the experience, this place continues to deliver great food and great service. Their seasonal menu is packed with interesting dishes that includes oyster, Otoro sushi, caviar, tempura, crab meat, A5 wagyu beef from Kumamoto, green lip abalone (for those chose not to have beef), Murray cod, duck and dessert. They have a good wine and sake selection, we went with two types of sake that complement the dishes well. They are using a bit more local ingredients like seafood but still getting some top products from Japan (like beef and blue fin tuna) There’re only 12 counter seats, the chef and team cook right in front of us so it’s really enjoyable to see how it’s all done. The service is attentive and polite, really feel pampered. It’s advisable to be slightly early as to enjoy the whole experience, there’s a nice waiting area. We’ll be back for the next season’s menu.

It was an amazing experience. The food was high-end with very fresh ingredients, and the service was absolutely top-notch. I had to leave early after dessert that day due to other commitments, and the restaurant even contacted me the next day to check if everything was okay and whether I had left because of any dissatisfaction. It was truly heart-warming. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Melbourne in terms of service

I when to ishizuka with my husband, the most beautiful and delicious experience, I really enjoyed everything. A tiny little detail I would like to hear Japanese music like make me feel in Japan. The staff was amazing, answer our questions and doing a really good job, and if I have the opportunity to go again I will enjoyed and worth it for sure.

Great experience with an exceptionally well-curated collection of dishes. Although I’ve been to fine dining restaurants of different cuisines around the world, I’d still place Ishizuka at the very top after what I experienced last night. If you enjoy Japanese omakase, this is the place you’ll want to visit in Melbourne.
