"You've just walked in. What’s this place all about? Desypher Architects transformed a former bottling factory among the industrial backstreets of one of Melbourne’s northern suburbs into a contemporary charmer where even the administrative offices—housed in a white glass box, with an overlay of abstract calligraphy and partly shaded by a rusted and perforated veil—are a thing of beauty. The reception, staffed by the most personable folks in the city, is linked to the galleries by two bridges. Dark hallways lead into bright spaces, an excellent metaphor for what the museum and its founders aim to promote: social cohesion among diverse cultures. The permanent collection: How was it? Five galleries house the permanent exhibitions, which range from Islamic art and architecture to the contributions of Islam in modern society. The first gallery explains aspects of the faithz—fasting, prayer, and the role of women—ideal for anyone who’s not familiar with the pillars of Islam. One of the most interesting galleries is the final one, which features esteemed Muslim Australians, including Indigenous boxer Anthony Mundine, and World War II hero Moheddeen Abdul Ghias Howsan, and their contributions to society. Be sure to check out the painted surfboards by Phillip George—one of only two non-Muslim artists in the collection—that represent the blending of Australian culture and Eastern art. Any special exhibitions to explore? There’s always some sort of temporary exhibition, often one that has to do with art. In the past we’ve seen displays of Yusuf Islam’s hand-drawn and digital illustrations, the "Capture the Spirit of Ramadan" touring photography exhibition, and "Our Grandmothers," a celebration of the family matriarchs. Events, ranging from hijab workshops to clinics with Muslim football players, often hit the IMA calendar, too. What did you make of the crowd? Thoughtful, grown-up, and sparse. You'll be able to explore at will. Let's talk practicality. How were facilities? If you suffer from even mild enochlophobia (fear of crowds), you’ll enjoy your time here. The galleries are spacious, modern, and easy to navigate. The café has a sunny courtyard and Merri Creek runs behind the museum; a lovely, eucalyptus-studded walking trail hugs the water. Worth investing time and money in a tour? Groups of eight or more can book tours, but smaller groups shouldn't worry: the volunteer staff is lovely and knowledgeable, so hit them up with questions. Time for some retail therapy—what's in the gift shop? There are cards, T-shirts, and basic souvenirs, as well as 5 Pillars, a board game where you "conquer" the five pillars of Islam. Anything good to nosh on if we get hungry? IMA Cafe serves Middle Eastern–inspired plates that are best enjoyed out in the courtyard. Care to share more insight?
