We loved Monhegan! Quiet and peaceful with tons of bird watching options. The staff at the Inn was excellent and it was really nice to have breakfast included. We stayed on the third floor of Pierce Cottage. The room was very clean and cozy. Just know before you pick the 3rd floor that there are no microwaves and there is a really tiny dorm size refrigerator that you share with another room in a hallway alcove. Likewise the shower is about the size of a shower on a submarine. If you need to wash your feet, you pretty much need to open the door so you can bend over. There is also no air conditioning, but the room was easy to cool by opening windows. Would pick a bigger room if we went again.

Wonderful experience starting with early check in available and delicious dinner with friendly, helpful staff. The breakfast included the following day had something for everyone - cooked to order plus buffet items. Would be great for a family gathering or romantic getaway! Hope you enjoy as much as we did.

Visiting the island was the best part of our trip to Maine! The views and hikes are absolutely beautiful on the island. The adorable brewery on the island was a great first stop when we arrived. We stayed in Pierce Cottage and it was a great stay. We had dinner at the Inn and it was incredible. You can’t go thinking it will be the Ritz. It’s a quirky hotel on a small quirky island. We stayed one night and it was a perfect amount of time.

Absolutely impressed with the service - getting our bags to and fro from the ferry (Thank you TJ!) and the always friendly reception desk! The rooms are spartan, but that’s part of the charm - we had a balcony which was amazing for the view! ||But the food! Amazing! We enjoyed the freshest, most delicious and beautifully-presented meals! Hot breakfasts (blueberry pancakes) were perfect; the evening meals were fabulous: the mussels were the best we ever had; the seafood grill with asparagus was amazing! All of our lovely servers were friendly, happy and helpful! Looking forward to a return trip! ||Thank you, everyone!

Expect clean but spartan rooms. The Inn has a rustic elegance. We love the dining room featuring fine paintings by local artists for sale. Be prepared for humid island days in the summer and chilly mornings off-season, but the basic comforts are provided. The cuisine is excellent, but we have one suggestion: there was only a single vegetarian entree offered during the entire week we stayed. We would like to see more than one vegetarian entree offered, or at least alternate the vegetarian entree each evening for dinner. Otherwise, we love the place!

I only went to the Island Inn for dinner, but it was great food and a beautiful dining room. Service was fast and attentive. I had the New England Chowder which was one of the best I’ve ever had any where. I had the Seafood Grill for dinner and that was a big portion of various seafood with rice and asparagus; it was delicious. Banana Rum cake for dessert was very good too. I will come back whenever I’m on the island to treat myself to a great dinner. I would be great for a special occasion and there are great window ocean views.

A small, grand hotel 10 miles out to sea, Wonderful dining room with great food, clean rooms, gorgeous scenery, very romantic.

Dinner was best of our whole trip to Maine. Rocking chairs overlooking harbor are great. Nice to have room with private bath, but the bathroom did smell bad and was tiny.

Yelp
1) the WiFi is very spotty, it goes on and off. 2) we were unaware you have to request that your bed be made if you stay under 3 nights. Whatever happened to pampering your customers? (And please don't blame it on Covid). This is my first experience from an "upscale" hotel. 3) The dinners are lackluster. There are better places to spend your money for a truly delicious meal.

Yelp
Service and dinner were great. I had the crispy duck and really enjoyed it. My wife had the salmon special.

Yelp
Monhegan Island is an amazing place. I go pretty much every year. The rooms at the Inn aren't the best, but is an old Inn after all. What is the best is the location. It's an incredible spot, right on the weather a short walk up the hill from the dock. It's got good food, and an amazing porch to sit on and read in the day, and have a few and watch the sunset at night.

Yelp
The Island Inn is the first spot you come across after you step foot on magical Monhegan island. It's very welcoming and has all the charms of island life you'd expect. The view from their deck is SPECTACULAR. Hard to beat, unless you have a private home on the island. The staff was very friendly and the Inn is like stepping back in time. It's very old school and rustic with some of the modern day charms (cuisine, internet, running water, being just some of them). My mum and I got a smaller room with two twin beds that faced the village. Next time I go with my husband I will splurge for an ocean view room. It was quite hot and we didn't have a fan so it was tough to sleep at times. Just having the window open wasn't enough, but also my mum snores, hah. The beds were very comfy and the room was quite clean. The bathrooms were also more luxurious than I had hoped for, so that was a plus. The dinner at The Island Inn was very old school, classic. Their menu items could use some updates for dinner but it was good overall. However, their breakfast that comes with your room each morning was UNBEATABLE. Lobster scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, sausage, english muffins, fantastic music and that gorgeous dining room overlooking the harbor. My recommendation is, stay at the Island Inn and make sure to have dinner at least one night at the Monhegan House. You will not be disappointed! The trails and history on Monhegan is legendary. The sunset is breathtaking and it's truly a magical place. There aren't many other places in this world like Monhegan. It holds a special place in my heart.

Yelp
Considering the remote location, they do a pretty awesome job here. The staff could not have been nicer; rooms are on the small side, but all are clean, in good condition and nicely furnished. Despite some rooms have shared bathroom, I never once encountered a bathroom that wasn't spotless. The dining room does an equally great job - again considering remote location (i.e., a bit pricey, menu variety); food was very good and well portioned. The breakfast - which is included with your room rate - was actually one of the highlights. Literally steps away from the ferry - provided a nice home base for discovering this amazingly charming island.

Yelp
Great dinner at the Island Inn. Our second autumn night on this little jewel of an island, my lady and I dined at the Island Inn. Excellent meal all the way around. The Inn is the closest thing to a traditional hotel you'll find on the island, with many guest rooms and a large dining room. We wandered down the path one dark and rainy night to the glow from its many windows, BYO bottle of wine in hand. We had a lovely dinner of local scallops and lobster, and an amazing buttery filet mignon. Service was impeccable, mostly smiling young faces as elsewhere on the island. There's a nice view, though not this night due to weather. Obviously, seafood features prominently on the menu, but they have other nice choices, too. This would be a great restaurant regardless of location, but Monhegan lends its charm to everything.

Yelp
I've been to Monhegan Island once and stayed overnight at one of the other hotels. Next time, I'll probably choose the Island Inn. The restaurant is quite good, and you'll have a great view no matter where you sit. You can watch the sunset as you sip your wine on the deck.

Yelp
Perfect for the setting. It's very picturesque, inside and out. The lobby and small reading room are charming, and the dining room is just delightful. (I loved the butter yellow color on the walls.) My boyfriend and I stayed in a queen ocean view room with a shared bath. The room was small, but tasteful and just right for a couple nights. And of course the view from our second story window was wonderful. No problem at all with the shared bath. They had my favorite tea (Harney & Sons) available in the morning -- great to keep you warm on a morning walk. Dinner and breakfast were very good. Overall, the Island Inn was the best place we stayed on our entire weeklong trip up the coast of Maine and Monhegan was a definite highlight.

Yelp
This review is for the food. We had two meals during our stay - breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was very nice and a good value considering that a very nice lobster scramble and blueberry stuffed french toast with unlimited helpings was on offer. They had a full complement of the usual warm breakfast offerings as well as a nice selection of continental items that included some decent baked goods and good quality fresh fruit. Dinner was expensive but not a bad value. The quality of their ingredients really stands out. My wife had the filet mignon, I had the haddock, my younger daughter had salmon, and my older daughter had roasted vegetables with quinoa. All used absolutely top flight ingredients and my haddock portion was immense. The visual and creative appeal of these dishes was limited, however, and this restaurant would not warrant a return visit (for dinner) if it were located in Boston, Cambridge, or Portland. That said, you cannot beat the view at the Island Inn, and they definitely have a wonderful breakfast offering. For dinner, the Monhegan House beats the Island Inn hands down, if you are more concerned about the food than the view.

Yelp
The restaurant at the Monhegan island Inn sits high above the harbor and even higher than it's mainland competitors. Considering that every washed linen and bottled condiment has to cross the chill Atlantic to be ready for a dinner here, the Inn's Menu rivals any destination resto, and at reasonable prices too. Our table enjoyed a colorful and flavorful parade of delights, including baby spinach salad with candied nuts, feta, and cranberries. Sweet, tiny yet meaty Maine mussels in aromatic butter broth. Roasted beets beside bright kale. Salmon filet with a brush of horseradich glaze, accompanied by rosemary red potatoes and sauteed kale mixed with butternut squash. Dessert was a granola topped, deep bowl of rhubarb and berries. Other tables applauded tall filet mignon topped with two large, un-shelled lobster claws. A quinoa dish rounded up all the veggies in the kitchen and came with either curried scallops or grilled chicken. The Inn has it's Region's best fare. And timed nicely, you can finish your meal in time to enjoy the setting sun over Manana island from a rocking chair on the Inn's expansive porch.

Yelp
Came here for lunch after getting off the ferry. Breathtaking views and courteous service. I tried the clam chowder which was fantastic, and the fish cakes for an entree. Fish cakes were good but could have used a bit more sauce. The side quinoa salad was bland at best, but was only a small component of the entree, so no biggie. Overall the views and the chowder made it worth the choice for lunch.

Yelp
We have been staying at the inn for several years now for our summer getaway and never disappointed. We were assured the covid precautions were in place and offering takeout meals And we felt very safe. Staff is always helpful, breakfast is wonderful with the lobster scramble and other delights. we are grateful to have such a beautiful relaxing place to escape to right here in our beautiful state.

Yelp
First I want to start by saying it was my first time to the inn. Breakfast in the morning was excellent the service at the rooms were great. When I left I realized my charger was still in the room. I called them they mailed it back to me in Miami. Thank you

Yelp
There are so many wonderful things to say about the Island Inn in addition to the good food, magical location and beautifully simple and quaint decor. Let's start with the staff and the owner. My cousin and I arrived not having realized our room had a shared bathroom. (It was on the reservation receipt, but we didn't notice until the night before). The staff and the owner,Michael spent a good amount of time juggling and re-arranging the room schedule to accommodate us and found us a King room (which had an amazing view of the harbor, BTW) with a private bath. They even converted the King into two Twins for us! How easy would it have been for them to say 'sorry, that's what you reserved. That's what you'll get'. What a comfortable, lovely room we had for our week there! The dining room is also an Art Gallery. Beautiful Local paintings. Did I mention that Monhegan is an art colony? The dinners are delicious, sophisticated, and convivial . But the breakfast buffet (which is included in the room rate) is AMAZING: Lobster Scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, bacon Fruit, fresh OJ , granola, yogurt, fresh baked goodies...etc, etc! Special care? So many things!: I was in Monhegan for a pre-season painting workshop. That means it's not quite summer. We ARE on an Island off the coast of Maine, mind you. There WAS weather. Plein Air painting in the rain? not me! Mivchael let us set up our easels on the gorgeous, expansive porch facing the bay to shelter from the wind and rain; I needed some milk for my very early morning tea (there's tea and coffee in the lobby at 7:30am), but I had forgotten to get milk from the market the night before (yes, a communal refrigerator for the guests). Michael got it for me with a smile! whew! Oh, I could go on and on... too many things and considerations! But let me leave you with this: I will return again and again!

Yelp
loved monhegan, disappointed in the island inn. we were going out here for my birthday. my wife called about special dietary needs. girl on the phone said their chef would handle it no problem, even talked to the chef. we go there and we are told the chef couldn't really do anything special for us. very disappointing. the island inn is the most "normal" lodging on the island, next time we go i am willing to try something a little more worthwhile .. even if it doesn't have electricity or running water at least we won't be lied to about services!!

Mary B.

Yelp
Okay so off the bat I only gave this funny experience three stars because I felt like I was in a fast food joint. We barely finished our salad when the entree arrived. Our waitress then ignored us for the remainder of the meal. I had the scallops which were excellent but it was served with polenta and olives which really didn't work. My husband had the seafood pasta which was good but had it not been salty... great.

Ashley E.

Yelp
Unique and delicious cuisine! A breath of fresh air in comparison to the monhegan house food... I would recommend this place to stay and eat so you may properly enjoy the gorgeous island you are on!

Yelp
Great buffet breakfast for early arrivals from the Maineland. It was 20 bucks a person. Whew. But good and original and also traditional foods. I had Lobster Scramble. Yum. Nice start to the warm day. Will hike to burn off the calories. It's all you can eat. Right off the dock worth it. Casual atmosphere but dressy too.

Yelp
We stayed in a king room with a private balcony and enjoyed breakfast each morning and dinner one night. Everything about the Inn was wonderful! The view is breathtaking, the food was delicious and beyond fresh! I think the Inn is a nice middle ground for those of us not necessarily used to being without the small comforts of life. The people were friendly and helpful too! Be sure to visit the brewery, take a hike (along the cliffs), have a slice of pizza, and try lobster from the little place by the beach!

Ashley M.

Yelp
my favorite place to stay at my favorite summer weekend spot. Overlooking the beautiful deep blue Maine water - the rooms are comfy, the food is amazing and I firmly believe this is the place to stay to truly appreciate a weekend on this fantastic island.

Doug L.

Yelp
My wife and I were planning our first real tour of the Maine coast when a friend recommended we do a day trip to Monhegan Island. We decided to see if there was availability at the Inn. The only available rooms were on the third floor with shared bath. No problem! The bathroom was directly across from room and was shared with only one other room. We never saw any evidence of anyone using bathroom but ourselves. Great view! Dinner was excellent, as was breakfast. Truly, the highlight of our trip! The only reason. I am not awarding 5 stars has less to do with the Inn and more to do with the great weather. The upper floor was hot and didn't cool down until early morning. We noticed fans in the office the next morning. Would have appreciated the staff recommending one. Everyone was wonderfully friendly and once all the day trippers leave, there is an intimate comradely amount the guest. We will return.

Yelp
With a very pretty setting, and a remote feel with few other dining options on the island, The Inn was recommended to us but we're not sure why. The only drink they offered was water. The food was cooked properly but had no flavor, really. And it was very expensive for what we were given. Maybe BoBo tourists are used to this? Not sure why there are so many five star ratings here for a valiant but incomplete effort to be distinctive.

Yella W.

Yelp
You can't bet the location, setting, or the view. This was our second visit, the first was thirty-four years ago to the island. Hasn't changed too much although there are more options for dining on the island, more vehicles (local trucks and golf carts and tourists), and an art gallery. But back to the Island Inn. Everything was very nice; dinners are very, very good. Breakfasts are amazing-buffet traditional: French toast, bacon, eggs cooked to order, pancakes cooked to order, real dark coffee, cereal, toast, super scones, muffins, etc. Breakfast is included in the price. The price is high, considering the room size. We had a corner room on the third floor with a bath--hardly enough room to turn around in. All the rooms are small, but rooms 14 and 15 seemed to have more space. Bathroom sharing, which we did not have, seemed to be an acceptable option as they were always free and much larger than the one in the room, so it could be considered. Service in the dining room was usually good for a summer hotel in Maine.
