I stopped in for a quick and healthy vegan lunch to-go. They had a nice selection of pre-made wraps and also a great variety of pasta/tofu/veggie type salads in single serve containers. Seemed pricey at $12 - $14 for a wrap and $8 for a salad. I got the Taro Burger wrap which was extremely fresh and delicious. It was packaged with a fancy desiccant so there was zero sogginess. I even got complimentary packets of gourmet, non-GMO mayo and mustard on the way out. For dessert, they have a section up front featuring chocolate bars made from locally grown cacao. Was the Manoa brand Kona cacao bar worth $9.59? Absolutely! Best chocolate I have ever tasted! It was incredibly smooth and tasted like liqueur! Unfortunately, even low quality food is expensive in Hawaii, so if you want high quality, you have to pay. The rest of the items in the store didn't seem that over priced. And the gentleman who cashed me out was the kindest, loveliest person I have met in a while!

We love shopping here for extra special produce, grab and go foods, chocolates and unique treats and general groceries. They carry some fabulous product lines I’m familiar with from the mainland and have some of the best cheese and deli meat selections on the island! Prices are a little bit bit higher than Safeway of course, but the products available are far and above the quality you can get anywhere else! Definitely the best market in town for the food aficionado and traveler with good taste. Come hungry and go home with some great food!

This review is for the 2024 re-opened deli. I was happy to see the deli buffet reopened, and very happy to see that salmon is still an item there. I took enough so I would have leftovers. BUT I was very disappointed in the salmon, it had a very strong, heavy garlic sauce on it that was: 1.) way too strong flavored for the salmon, and 2.) gave me indigestion for several hours afterwards. Salmon has a strong flavor in itself that calls for a more mild sauce. And this sauce was so strong it ruined the flavor, and caused stomach upset. I don't even feel like eating dinner tonight, I took an antacid (which I very rarely do)and I'll have to throw out my leftover salmon. The rice was WAY too spicy, too. I have working taste buds, they don't need to be clobbered with seasonings. I might try the deli again. Next time I'll stick to the green salad and maybe the veg lasagna. I also suggest that when they use lids on the salad bar items, that the lids have some kind of handle to lift them, so hands don't come into direct contact with the food surfaces.

Better to have a small store packed than a large store empty. Since the store move everything has gone down hill. The deli use to be perpetually hopping- now it’s never open. Good luck finding any local produce- it seems the buyers don’t know how to source the islands abundance. The Hilo and Puna store do a far better job at local fruit/veg. Shelves are often empty. Prices are sky high but that’s expected and would be fine if the store was ran well. Hollow feel to the store.

Google
Great upgrade from the original store. Bigger parking lot and the store is so spacious. I love the premade chill desserts and pastas and their produce section! I can't wait for their hot deli to reopen!

Google
Awful customer service. Today at the Kona location a heavy set cashier with long hair and glasses (refused to tell me her name) was very rude. The store shelves are messy & many items out of stock. No one greeted me or asked if I needed help. I left and went to Target nearby, which has many of the same items but for much cheaper.

Google
Premiere health food store in Kona. Impressed by the "Hawaii's Local Buzz" product line they sell, as well as many other local brands. A+ Will be shopping here regularly.

Google
I use to love island naturals when they had their old location, now they got all commercial and every time I go in I regret it. Prices are too high for the same stuff at the regular grocery. Can find an alternative for the other stuff at cheaper prices too. Save yourself the trouble. If you’re a tourist, just go to sack n save. Don’t be fooled by the “organic” / “natural” vibe. Bring back local organic without the break your bank prices. Con artists.

Yelp
My family were in the area for a little over a week and wanted to stock our mini fridge with fresh ingredients and staple products. They have a fairly good assortment of fresh veggies and some essential fruits. Their berries are very pricey, so we opted for bananas, oranges and apples. They have a wonderful freshly baked goods area including breakfast items, breads, bagels, etc. One of the best parts of going to Island Naturals Market was their deli section - which was very well stocked with sandwiches, salads, fresh soups and more. They have so many options for vegetarians and unique flavors - I was extremely impressed. Some of my favorite items included the tofu microgreens, the chicken curry salad, tina salad, salmon salad, baked purple potatoes, kobucha squash, taro sandwiches and more! Wow - we would stop by each morning to grab things for our picnic and hike! Furthermore, they also had sparking water, water in bulk, tofu, bulk items such as nuts, freshly crushed nut butter, health and wellness area, jerky, teas, coffees and more. The place gives me a very co-op type of vibe with whole food prices. The service was good - lots of people working the cash registers and helping us at check-out. Plenty of parking available and I highly recommend!

Yelp
I was at Island naturals today and I was so happy to see the salmon on the hot bar, it was seasoned with salt and pepper and very nicely cooked. A while back I had some salmon and it was a little too garlicky for me, so I bought three big pieces of this and took them home and had them for dinner with my husband and we just loved it! Thank you Island naturals we will be back for your hot bar soon and often!

Yelp
Went there on a Tuesday morning in January and they virtually had no baked goods or bread. Also it felt like a number of shelves were empty. In produce they only had 3 pineapples.

Yelp
I love this market, it has every natural / clean product that we were looking for. I high recommend going here if you're looking for organic products, natural skincare / body care / hair care and home goods! The store is big, spacious and clean. The employees are very nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Good selection of baked goods and organic products, refrigerated and shelf stable items.

Yelp
Island Naturals tries to keep a good selection of good food and natural health products. Their staff is always friendly and helpful (yes I know others have said differently, but my experience has always been great). I've lived on the island for over a year and I am so greatful we have this store. They don't always have everything I want, but hey, we live on an island.

Yelp
I wanted to check out this local grocery store since we don't have it on Oahu. It's similar to other health food markets. I like the little Fresh Baked section! Love the vegan pumpkin cranberry bread!!! Forgot to take pics. Local Muffins: Banana Blueberry, Lilikoi Coconut, Cranberry Pumpkin! All delish! Found some familiar Organic Brown Rice Snaps and tried some new Cauliflower & Rosemary Garlic crackers.

Yelp
Really nice natural grocery store. Love this place. The smoothies are so delicious. The deli section has some really yummy stuff too. They have such a great selection from fresh produce to packaged goods, baked goods, hot food, fresh fruit drinks, supplements, personal care products etc.

Yelp
Good place to find high quality food and natural made stuff. We bought bread and smoothies there often, the staffs were all super nice.

staff is friendly, variety of foods and items, price is somewhat reasonable, plaza parking.

Yelp
We really enjoy stopping by Island Naturals when we're in the area. They have a great variety of items including a lot of local products. We typically look for things to bring back to the mainland and it usually ends up being seasoning salts, butters (like lilikoi and macadamia nut), and other items we can't find at home. They also have fresh juices, kombuchas and other great items you can take along on your adventures. We usually spend a good amount of time browsing and looking for tasty things and there always something new and interesting to try.

Robbos E.

Yelp
Island Naturals is a great stop for anyone trying to find organic and natural foods and products. The store reminds me of Sprouts or Natural Grocer, two chains on the mainland. Island Naturals' aisles are wide so easy to navigate, but the shelves had some empty spaces - this highlights the difficulty of keeping things in stock in the middle of the Pacific. We visited twice for some packaged items for the kitchen, and also some grab-and-go sandwiches and treats. The grab-and-go items were very fresh and wonderfully textured, but not strongly flavored, so a nice option for kids and other picky eaters. Island Naturals isn't on Ali'i Drive so thankfully removed from the touristy hubbub. The check-out staff seemed a bit sleepy both times, reflecting the local pace of life. Slow and low, that is the tempo.

Yelp
This was our first time back after the pandemic. They are no longer located in the warehouse-like area and no longer have the cool co-op-like vibe. It is now like a stripped down Sprouts market with a fraction of the inventory, no kombucha on tap, and a very mediocre experience. It wouldn't have been such a bummer if I didn't love the previous place so much.

Yelp
This store was a great find while we were on the big island with my vegan family members. Vegan meals can be hard to find around here, but this store had a few prepared meal options and tons of vegan pastries and desserts to choose from, as well as non-vegan options. This is a good spot to pick up lunch/snacks before a long day out adventuring. The prices are higher than other big supermarkets, but that's to be expected with specialty products.

Yelp
This place is off the hook! There's milk tea boba, sushi counter, prepared foods, deli, groceries, good travel souvenirs, just about everything you'll need. This place is very handy to have a resort area. The inside is really nice, parking is in the mall area and abundant.

Alanna M.

Yelp
I am so disappointed in Island naturals since they moved to their new location, the restaurant aspect of the store is quite horrible. They don't wanna pay anybody good enough to have a working kitchen, so disappointing. The shelves are not fully stocked. It's disappointing they could be better.

Yelp
Health food store on Big Island with prolific selection of veggies and fruits and other offerings. Got our Hawaiian papaya fix here.

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
I have been a customer at Island Naturals for over 13 years and not once even if something was bad in all this time have I returned it. Today I returned an unused tea strainer that I felt was not what I needed. I retuned it unused, in the original package and with the receipt. The manager or person who could do my return was very rude about the return. I couldn't believe it, like what does she care if I'm returning something that was not going to work for me. She certainly has no managerial manners and has now lost a very good customer as we spend on an average 800 -1000 monthly at the store.
google avatar

Yelp
Despite the new much larger store, the produce department is still relatively tiny and lacking in the diversity of produce available on this wonderful island. Prices hover somewhere between high and "you've got to be kidding"! I want to like this store more than I actually do. I come for hard to find imported goods, but usually leave disappointed. So much space in the store has been allocated for Deli and Fresh food that has remained empty for months now.

Yelp
We love this store so much! Stopped several times for a variety of things and they are very Vegan and GF friendly. The Kona location was a bit better but loved the deli selection on the Hilo side. You can also refill your water there for free for tap or $2 a gallon for alkaline. They have yummy options for non Vegans as well.

Yelp
3.5 stars Island Naturals, aka "the Natch" to the hippies and hipsters, is Konas biggest vegan and vegetarian market and eatery. Been around for a long time, as others have come and gone. Typical "natural food" store and vibe, so take that for what you may. For some, it's a safe haven and sanctuary, for others, it's a wacky spot with smelly tree huggers. It's a mixture of both. They carry a lot of things you can't get anywhere else locally, and would have to order online. You also have hefty prices for a lot of it. Some things have me shaking my head that anyone would pay such crazy prices. Other things are a really good deal. I most often come here to make a plate from the hot food bar, rather than to buy groceries. The hot (and cold) food bar is $8.99/lb, which is a decent price for what you can get. It varies daily, and it super hit or miss. Sometimes I go, and there is a plethora of stuff to choose from (a variety of grass fed or natural meat, to ultra vegan to gluten free), while other times I go, the selection is sparse to none. If I had any gripe here, it's that it isn't the most consistent. I've read other reviews where people complain of dusty expired products. I personally haven't seen that but I can imagine it's possibility- especially on the high priced stuff that probably doesn't move a lot. The staff are all pretty cool here, friendly and helpful. In addition to the hot food bar, they also have a pretty awesome pre-made section with tons of salads, wraps and desserts. They even have an alcohol section, yet I don't ever purchase any here. They have a loyalty rewards card (which I'm always down for), and some days have special sales.

Yelp
great natural food cooperative located off the highway about 15 south of the kona airport. a perfect place to grab staples or specialty items as snacks or to comprise whole meals. great bulk section, lots of dairy and non dairy alternatives in terms of milk and yogurt, good veggies and produce and a lot of supplements. their hot food/pre-prepared area was barren and covered with african baskets but we found some wraps and pre packaged salads in the cold case. not sure if they usually offer warm foods and this was just a one off, or if they've taken to not providing those options at this time. two issues i would say cause me to give this place four stars. the hours on saturday are so limited. i drove up at 5:10pm, to find they close at 5pm on saturdays which seems absurdly early to me, even if you're a local and have other things going on to prevent you from shopping earlier in the day. the amount of check out lines they had open when we went back a different day during their open hours meant the line of people with full carts waiting to check out extended halfway down one of the aisles. someone finally made the executive decision to open another register which made things go faster; maybe they have waves of people coming in here, but paying attention to that and facilitating faster check out might be an improvement. (i'm well aware of island time, and overall this didn't bother me that much, but it may annoy others who don't have the time or patience to check out and pay for all their items.) lastly, i would caution people that the pricing is reflective of being in the islands and not on the mainland. you're going to want to know this ahead of choosing to do a huge shopping event here. for example, our sum total of items fit in a normal size backpack. we had a less than $20 bottle of wine, two wraps, some yogurt, bulk granola, a chocolate bar, and a couple,of other things and our total came to $99. if you or someone you know cares about eating predominantly organic ingredients, has a gluten allergy or is lactose intolerant, this is a place you can be guaranteed to find foods to eat, but it'll come at a price. that price is something some people are more than willing to pay.
google avatar

Dalilah M.

Yelp
I liked it at the old location better. Its gone a little more mainstream in that its more tourist focused than local and has less variety overall. On the other hand there is a great selection of unique Hawaii made products but you'll pay for it.
google avatar

Yelp
I have sworn to myself many times that I'd never shop here again. Every single *seriously* every single time I come here I get overcharged at the register. Items marked on sale are never priced that way when you're in check out. No, it's not the cashier's fault, but at least offer a "I'll get my manager to fix this ASAP". Once, the cashier was literally leaning on the scale while weighing some cucumbers. !!?? I want to have faith in this place, but I've been ripped waaayyyy too many times. I'll go where I'm "Someone Special Everyday".

Yelp
Everything you need - groceries to souvenirs. The deli food is great. Hot and cold options. Service friendly.

Yelp
Love this store! So clean and fresh, nicer than other grocers. Found everything we needed and the staff were super helpful
google avatar

Yelp
I am so torn because I love the store, but they never, and I mean NEVER, put the sale price into the registers so I have to eye ball every item to make sure they ring up correctly. And I am talking about multiple items ringing up incorrectly. The poor people at the register have to deal with the fall out, but it's not them. If you put something on sale, put it In the register!!! If this isn't addressed somehow, I won't be shopping there anymore.

Yelp
Island Naturals Market has moved to 74-5444 Makala Blvd. Great store - reminds me of Sprouts back in Arizona. (02/02/22)

Yelp
Rick is the best! Produce is always fresh and delicious! All the baked goods are amazing! Love love love this little store

Yelp
Despite the expensive prices, their products are expired. Camembert had red and yellow mold on it, and the expiration date on their provolone (purchased on May 24) was May 9.

Yelp
Sad, but recent experience at the Island Naturals (Kona Store) invites me to seek other vendors. On December 2, 2022, I visited the store (74-5444 Makala Blvd 96740) to shop and get a credit on an overcharge from a previous purchase. Two weeks before, I purchased a local coffee brand that had been out of stock for several months. The faded label stated $33.50 ----this label marked an empty slot where the coffee would have been displayed. I well-know that it was $33.50 at the time of purchase as it had been for several months. Reviewing purchase receipt at home revealed that the charged price was $35.99 [$2.49 difference]. On the December 2nd visit, the price (on a NEW sticker) showed $35.99. A probable explanation would be that, once restocked, the NEW sticker replaced the old at the higher price but not before my purchase. I presented my case, in person, to two store associates, each whom I understood to have the ability to approve the credit. The first, Lucy, listened to my explanation. Lucy left, a different person returned and listened to my explanation. She left but returned, telling me that [a third] employee had created a new label between when I purchased the coffee and when I returned for the credit: the price, I was told, was the same (the higher). It bothers me 1) that the person ultimately responsible for the rejection of my claim did not tell me in person; 2) claimed that the original price was always the higher. $2.49 (as a credit, NOT refund) is a quibble against my integrity as a here-to-fore regular and loyal customer. The insult and almost 10 minutes of my time, honestly, will not terminate my patronage but I will diminish my purchases at Island Naturals in favor toward other vendors. In the end, I will spend LESS at Island Naturals and enhance competitors, all because the final decision maker at Island Naturals did not care to address my request for a credit IN PERSON but used two others as a shield against me: maybe, too many managers !

Yelp
This is a great place to buy organic / natural food goods in Kona. The gluten free/vegan baked goods are amazing. The prices are comparable to all of the natural food stores I've been to. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Rodger M.

Yelp
Have lived in Kona 10 yrs or so and it's the same rude attitude every time I've been there. Must need to be rude or disinterested to work there. Wonder why ? underpaid, overworked, hates their life ? ? Think they're better than the customer. It's a puzzle to me.
google avatar

Richy R.

Yelp
Nice staff, great options, prices could be better but that's not a deal breaker because they have almost every natural food item I need.

Yelp
We've visited the Big Island a few times. On our last visit we discovered this store at their old location. We loved it so much that on our first day we made visiting it part of our plans. What a wonderful surprise to see it's new location. It's much larger and provides a lot more merchandise. We are kosher consumers and often rely on produce, grains and beans to prepare in our hotel room. I don't think the prices are unreasonable. This is Hawaii. And natural food stores often are more expensive, especially organic products. We can't eat the prepared foods, but they look very appetizing. I highly recommend this store.

Hi P.

Yelp
Favorite grocery store of all time, thanks. Sandwich section is amazing, cakes are amazing, staff is laid back and friendly.

Yelp
Great selection of healthy and alternative products. Helpful and friendly staff. Excellent, grass fed steaks. Thanks for providing all my families favorites.

Yelp
Island Naturals Market is like Hawaii and Northern California got together, got really high, and then had a baby (or three, there is one in Hilo and one in Pahoa as well). It's like a Whole Foods/local products mash up, and with a huge variety of fresh fruits and veggies, natural and organic body care products, Kombuchas, coconut water, succulent little fig bars and other snacks, and many local treasures including Kona coffees, teas, and Hawaiian honey. SO GOOD. Not surprisingly, it is a little expensive, especially considering they have an impressive selection of things that even in the mainland can be pricey. Their deli is also fantastic - they have a hot food bar that is solid and serves a variety of vegan/vegetarian plates, along with options like breakfast croissant sandwiches, surprisingly scrumptious vegan pastries, and my favorite - a massive selection of fresh and high-quality wraps and sandwiches, which made for excellent on-the-go lunches and snacks for our many island adventures. The wraps in particular (we bought a veggie wrap, Mexican/fiesta-inspired chicken wrap, and red pepper hummus turkey wrap) were wonderfully fresh. The red pepper hummus turkey wrap was easily well worth its ~$7 price tag; my personal favorite. There is both an indoor and outdoor seating area if you choose to eat there as well. Between our 8 nights in Kona and Hilo, we went to Island Naturals four separate times, if that tells you anything about our dependency on fancy foods and snacks...
google avatar

Marissa N.

Yelp
I walked in and it's pretty pricey. The cold prepared food was in low supply and had an abundance of quinoa. The hot prepared foods had flies buzzing around it.
google avatar

SK P.

Yelp
We ordered two veggie sandwiches to take with to the beach they were so good. A piece of fresh fruit and something to drink is all you need for a great day on the shore watching beautiful waves or anywhere else and islands natural market offers take away that is healthy and very tasty!

Yelp
Great selection of products, anywhere from home goods, groceries, vitamins and supplements, accessories, even a deli. The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. I came in looking for products that were safe to take while pregnant. The first employee I approached was able to direct me to the right section, explain the product (how to use it, and how it's proven to be safe to use), and even make their own recommendations on other useful products. Another time I came in looking for teething products for my newborn. The worker walked me to the amber teething necklaces and stayed to explain the differences between them to make sure I had the best one for my baby's needs. Very grateful for such friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff!

Hugh B.

Yelp
Been in Kona 14 years. Never understood why people think this is such a cool store. They have a new location but with the same high prices. They still lack Aloha. And just like at the old location, they're usually out of whatever it is I go in there to buy. Just don't get it ....
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
I love shopping at Whole Foods and small local markets when traveling. On the islands I would say Down to Earth is a good go to. But I came across this place on yelp and was glad I did. I just have shopped here half a dozen times during my stay for everything from a quick bite to eat to buying full blown groceries for preparing dinner. Great selection. Friendly staff. Bomb lilikoi coconut cheesecake by the slice lol. Support local!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
First time here and I loved that they have a salad and hot food bar!! Delicious, tasty, and not to mention healthy! I love it. I didn't have a chance to browse the shop but it's large and looks accommodating!
google avatar

Mylene M.

Yelp
I just waited at the deli for several minutes to order and was ignored and ignored.. one girl even looked straight at me and proceeded to cut her vegetables.. guess that was more important than customer service. Very poor!
google avatar

Lori A.

Yelp
Nice market with lots of convenient choices, such as sandwiches, deli, bakery and so much more. Employees were friendly. Market is clean and it was easy to find what we were looking for.
google avatar

RE B.

Yelp
Was a big fan of hot deli items, but there's been noticeable unpleasant increase in salt content over last few months - possibly new cooks in the kitchen? Cold deli has nice selection for green salad fixing and some pasta or grain-based salads. Curiously deli fruit is almost always canned. As for other areas...usually good selection of prepackaged takeaway - sandwiches, salads n desserts. Island Naturals also has interesting H&B section. Many local products plus excellent selection of essential oils. Also items that I otherwise have to buy online. Pricier, of course, so I only buy when I can't wait for something to be shipped. Lotsa interesting fruits, nuts, grains n snackage in the bulk bins. Helpful staff, but seemingly high turnover. From one visit to next, only familiar face is manager. So 5 stars for convenience n selection...but sodium content and price pull the rating down.

Yelp
While backpacking and exploring around the island of Hawaii, I discovered Island Naturals Market. I love this place for the large selection of healthy vegan food at the hot bar and the grab-n-go section. The vegan Asian curry is delicious, and there is always something good to eat on the hot bar for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It became my go-to place for restocking as I crisscrossed around the island. In addition to the ready made stuff, they also have a good variety of grocery items that you won't find an the other markets.

Donald S.

Yelp
When returning an item to the store in Pahoa. Told that I was late by 1-day of the return policy (1-week) With the price of fuel, and the desire not to make unwanted trips. This was the 1st convenient day to travel for me. Over the course of a year we spend approx. 8-10K at the various island naturals markets . We like to support this local merchant. After this experience...not so much any more.
