The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"A private island resort is one thing. An entire archipelago in one of the most ruggedly beautiful, previously inaccessible parts of the world is a whole other level. Islas Secas, a retreat comprising nine guest cottages and 14 otherwise uninhabited islands in Panama’s Gulf of Chiriqui, is a rare example of the kind of hotel that offers a level of service and privacy that genuinely feels like a private home. As one of a maximum of 18 others, guests can spread out and feel they have the run of the place (and access to the cool, discreet, expert staff) without that awkward “we’re the only people here” feeling. It’s adventurous but not too rugged, eco-minded without being sanctimonious, and luxurious but neither precious nor overly fancy. Proof: The place runs entirely on solar energy, but the air conditioning works perfectly. Spend the day fishing or diving with sharks, then unwind after a fresh-caught dinner with a bottle of crisp, dry rosé while playing chess in a Hemingway-inspired lounge. The rooms and main pavilion were thoughtfully designed by Tom Scheerer, an architect who does low-key, old-school coastal elegance like no one else (he’s also behind the recent revamp of the Lyford Cay Club in the Bahamas). Wicker and rattan are well-deployed, fabrics are all crisp natural whites, sage greens and light blues, and everything is indoor-outdoor wherever possible: Each casita wall is constructed with louvered slats to let in the breeze, massive doors slide open and turn the whole room into the chicest screened-in porch ever. Even the shower can be had both ways, depending on which way you position the door. Panama has been emerging in Central America’s luxury tourism market for the past couple of years. Islas Secas marks its arrival. Doubles from $1015 per person, per night (3 night minimum, includes boat transfer, on-site activities, meals, and drinks)." - CNT Editors

This was a truly magical getaway. Everything about this place was top notch. Every dinner was a 5 course amazing meal. Didn't have one bad bite in 4 days. Breakfast was delicious - the chiliquiles were to die for! And the staff could not have been more accommodating. I am still shocked at how the staff could possibly remember my name ANY my coffee order every morning. The activities were so fun....had never been wake surfing before - what a blast! I highly recommend this place!

Trip of a lifetime! There is no place more beautiful and peaceful that is also family-friendly to adventurous kids. The staff was amazing from the dining experience to coordinating water activities and boat excursions. They were so gracious in accommodating our large group including 5 kids. Both the grown ups and kids enjoyed every minute of our vacation.||The food is incredible! Everything is so fresh and presented beautifully. The adults enjoyed more fine dining while the kids were able to order off of their “anywhere, anytime” menu which made it so easy to keep everyone happy. From the fresh squeezed juices and house made croissants for breakfast to sushi night and the craft cocktails for dinner, we enjoyed everything they had to offer! ||The 4 bedroom house was perfect for sleeping arrangements for our large group and offered us ample space to socialize on the deck and enjoy the pool and gorgeous ocean backdrop. We felt like we had the entire island to ourselves as there is plenty of privacy and you can’t hear or see other guests even when enjoying the deck.||The kids loved the platform which had sea bobs and foil boards. As a family we enjoyed boat excursions and the picnic on the beach. The food was delicious and there was plenty of shell hunting and snorkeling to keep the kids exploring for hours.||The flight on the Islas Secas plane was short and enjoyable. We were directed where to go and everything felt well orchestrated.||This is place is heaven on earth. The smells, the sounds, the warmth of the people. We can’t wait to get back!

We spent 4 glorious days at Isla Secas. We have travelled a ton and to epic places. This is one of them, and it is a chart topper. The island is absolutely stunning and thoughtfully designed and organized. It's super comfortable and non-pretentious. The staff are beyond amazing. They make you feel at home and are helpful and engaging and happy. We fell in love with them. The food is ridiculous. Every meal was incredible and the varied. They can do any type of cuisine. And, it is as good as the best restaurant you have dined at for that type of food. The activities were amazing from the diving and snorkelling to the e-foiling and wake surfing. This place is magical.

Islas Secas Resort offers a mix of relaxation on the beach and adventure, both above and in the water. I visited with my dad, and we enjoyed daily fresh meals, walks around the island, and scenic views throughout the island. Pictures don't do it justice-but I took a bunch anyways.||We went on a few boat rides, went seabobbing, and joined the other visitors of the island on a lunch cookout on a nearby island. I also had a blast swimming in both the pool and ocean, stand up paddle boarding, e foiling, and scuba diving. If you plan to scuba dive, I highly recommend bringing a go pro. E foiling was new to me and it was rewarding picking it up after falling in the water many times. ||The island does not have a gym or fitness room, but they offer yoga, and there are some trails and a paved path that I ran in the mornings. Also bring a flashlight (which they provide) when you walk around at night-I was very surprised to see some crabs walking around on the way to and from dinner. They are harmless but there are a lot of them. ||The casitas were amazing-my dad and I had separate ones across from each other but shared a porch and small pool. Ours had amazing views above the water, perfect for stargazing at night. Lastly, everyone that works there was so kind and helpful. The people running the activities helped us plan our days and taught us about the island. I’m impressed with how efficiently they worked and adapted to wind and changes in tide.

It's no exaggeration to describe Islas Secas Resort as a paradise. For its rich marine life, its exquisite coral and tropical fish, its inviting clear turqoise water to its fascinating birds and its pristine beaches of which there are many .......and not to forget all the spectacular viewing points around the island. To add to this, the staff are outstanding and nothing is too much trouble - we were so well looked after with many activities from diving to yogo on offer. Mealtimes were always a treat - dishes were beautifully presented and delicious. As a family we could not have asked for more - non of us wanted to leave when our stay was up! We had such a fantastic time and would love to visit again.

This was our second visit to Islas Secas and we had a delightful time. The service was outstanding. The staff is kind and always present. They have a restaurant and bar, where the staff knew our habits and provided an amazing experience at every meal. |Our days were planned in advance and offered all the flexibility we needed if we wished to adjust anything. We did a variety of activities, such as sunset cruises (with dolphins), water activities (seabob, efoil), spa. |We would strongly recommend Islas Secas to anyone that is looking for a calm and relaxing environment with a luxury personalized service.
