Islington Hotel

"Visiting the Islington is like diving into a favorite family bolt hole. While the location is unassuming - a short drive from Hobart's city centre along a quiet road that appears entirely residential - the mansion itself is so cozy and enticing that it is genuinely difficult to leave. It is a mélange of styles; the result of a restoration project in which a down-at-heel 1847-built Regency home has become an architectural object d'art - although at first glance you wouldn't know it. From the front, this appears to be a traditional, sandstone town house. Walk inside the 11-bedroom boutique bed and breakfast and the picture changes. Beyond the formal reception rooms lies a soaring, modernist glass conservatory which engulfs the entire the back of the original building. High, transparent doors open out into a landscaped garden designed to maximize the view of Mount Wellington beyond. Inside, every nook and cranny - from the dark red-walled cigar study to the chandeliered dining room - showcases an eccentric collection of curios, the most fascinating of which relate to the history of the house. In the bedrooms understated luxury is the key, with under-floor heating in every en suite and locally crafted beds so comfortable you will leave the Islington feeling like an angel."

We absolutely loved our time at the Islington! The architecture is stunning, the grounds are well kept with the multiple gardens blooming, and our garden suite was spacious and perfect for relaxing. The bed was comfortable, the heated bathroom floors were welcomed, and the shower and amenities were great. We also enjoyed the many treats (chocolates, tea) that were in our room as well as the cookie jars in the kitchen area! ||The stars of Islington are the staff - Jacob was so helpful as was the general manager, Marc. They were professional, friendly and welcoming. Also, the chef...he is a culinary genius and we loved all of his creations from the breads, sweet treats, and the delectably fresh, local breakfast dishes. We're still talking about his sweet corn cakes with salmon and poached eggs...||We highly recommend staying at the Islington when in Hobart and we look forward to returning to this beautiful island and lovely hotel.

We had a lovely stay at the Islington in 2019 and decided to rebook for our wedding night which was cancelled due to covid for which we gave 6 months notice of the cancellation. The hotel declined to refund but offered a credit. 2 kids later (during which we were unable to book due to the young age of our children) we were excited to head back but they declined to accept our credit voucher as it was just 2 weeks outside of the expiry time. I am shocked at this inflexibility given we had previously enjoyed such warm hospitality there.

Incredible stay! The architecture, food and setting are all first class but what separates the Islington is their attention to detail and personalisation of their service. Huge thanks to all the staff for making our stay so memorable, we look forward to returning! 🤗

Wellington Suite |We travel to Hobart once a year and have stayed in most of the luxury hotels over period of 20years or more.|We have stayed at the Islington previously, though some time ago, and enjoyed it very much.|First, the good things: Very comfortable beds and beautiful gardens.|Unfortunately, the above did not outweigh the negatives. |Although the manager Marc, whom we saw once and one other staff member (of the four staff we encountered) were friendly and approachable, the other two staff members were indifferent and unwelcoming. |After a three nights stay, we were still waiting for the requested conditioner. |For some reason the bathroom floor was not heated as expected.|The afternoon offering of squashed cake and flowers under cling wrap was less than appealing.|Guests expected to use their own accounts to login to Netflix Stan etc . Only free to air tv provided.|Neither the phone nor iPad were charged.|There are no staff after a certain hour and as the phone /ipad didn’t work, we would have been hard pressed to contact any.|I had asked for lactose free milk - none provided in the room. |There is no shaving /make-up mirror in the bathroom.|Most concerning was the bathroom safety .Both the toilet and shower doors open into the shower recess /toilet causing a serious safety issue should the door become blocked on the inside.|After a three night stay, we were not farewelled by any staff member, which by this time, was an unsurprising end to a very lacklustre stay.|There are so many other places in Hobart where fine Tasmanian hospitality is provided.

The Islington Hotel has been such a pleasant place to stay for our trip to Hobart. It’s a beautiful grounds which makes you feel like you’re out of the city, with a stunning garden with great views of Mount Wellington. We had a garden room and it was stunning waking up to the view of the garden. The hotel its self is very nice, built from Sandstone and immaculately decorated. The room was very spacious. It’s very well located, close to everything, but as I said feeling like you’re not in a main city. Breakfast was delicious and the dining room has glass walls with a great view and a fireplace that is always lit. The staff were amazing and attentive. Marc was always available to our every need. I’d highly recommend it

This was our first visit to Tasmania and staying at the Islington was a highlight of the trip. The service is outstanding, and the room extremely comfortable and clean. The whole place has a lovely Victorian era charm. You can relax around the grounds and there is plenty of room to sit and relax outside of your room. Breakfast everyday is a must as the food was amazing. They’re also currently updating the furniture and decor which will just make it even better. We loved our stay, thanks!

📝 Spent 2 lovely nights at this hotel on the outskirts of Hobart. Highly recommended! 🛏️ We had a splendid room that was very big and comfortable. The bathroom was also huge and had a nice, warm floor. Each day we found in the room complimentary sweets, while each night a tea set was put on our bed so we could prepare a relaxing tea before sleeping. Outside there were also a couple of chairs to enjoy the hotel's pretty garden. 📍 The hotel was built in and around a beautiful historic villa. Everything is super elegant and gives a nice feeling. Loved also the breakfast area with the big glass windows that let lots of light in. In terms of location, you probably need a car to get there since it's further away from the center. They have private parking but even outside of the property you could simply park on the side of the street. 🍴 Breakfast was very good: a few things like muffins and pastries were available as buffet, otherwise we could each order a hot or cold dish from a little menu we had at the table, which would be freshly prepared.

We'd been wanting to stay at the Islington Hotel for many years having lived nearby for some time. For the price, I was expecting a more luxe experience - even though the room was freshly furnished, some of the fittings were looking tired in the Garden suite. The heavy curtain which is needed to block light for sleeping was tattered and was very difficult to use - and in fact did not close off the entire space (I was pleased to hear it will be replaced shortly, but that didn't help us). There were minimal supplies in the room - no coffee options in room, no mini bar (even though the booking said there was a free mini bar), no moisturiser or bath salts etc - things which we have come to expect from a room in this price bracket. Whilst the bed was comfy, it was very squishy on the left side to get in/out and around and there was a constant fan noise from the ensuite which annoyingly couldn't be turned off and a large gap under the door where light, food smells and a breeze made entry. The breakfast was decent, but our requested late checkout was ruined by the gardener's enthusiastic activities only a few feet away from the room, so we had to abort the idea! I'm glad we got the chance to stay, but happy not to return.

Yelp
The Islington is about a 25 minute walk from the centre of Hobart and you're transported to a Regent English manor - a place where the royals would probably holiday. It's got that country charm with manicured gardens, eclectic collection of museum quality artworks and graphic interior which could easily be in Vogue. Dinner is for house guests only, so luckily we were able to secure an invite by some friends. We were treated to a private dinner in the library (minus Colonel Mustard and the candlestick), however not before having a drink in the lounge. The menu offered home style cooking with the focus on local and seasonal produce and extensive wine list. I opted for the freshly made gnocchi with tomato sugo and parmesan crisps and the super rich chocolate an forest berry ice-cream salad to end a very indulgent night. The Islington makes you feel completely at home (we even spied a couple in there bath robes eating!). It's open plan design with a recently contemporary renovation in the rooms downstairs, it truly is the epitome of luxe!

Yelp
After endless delays out of Sydney, we finally arrived in Tasmania and to the Islington well past midnight! This is not your typical hotel that has a check-in desk...it's more like a B&B. The overnight manager greeted us in her robe and led us to our room. Since it was so late we just went straight to our room and eventually missed out on the story and tour of the hotel. Our room faced the back garden with a wonderful view. I loved that their bathroom is stocked with Aesop products. The big downside is that it is far from everything. We ended up walking to and back from Templo, which I really didn't mind since I grew up in San Francisco and is used to walking up and down a ton of hills, but it can be inconvenient. The breakfast here is great and my hubby loves the cafe lattes here! They recently brought on a new head chef who was previously at Saffire, so I'm sure the food is going to get even better than it already is!

Yelp
Islington Hotel far exceeded our expectation, especially with the staff and service. We stayed in one of the rooms in the back of the hotel, which is a newer modern addition to the existing Victorian esque house. Our view was of the garden and the rolling hills of Hobart. While the hotel itself was spotless, beautiful, and comfortable, it was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff that really left a great impression on us.

Yelp
Spent three nights at the Islington. They have a great staff, check-in was a breeze. Our room was #7, in the new part of the hotel and right next to the kitchen and dining area. Yet, it was entirely quiet in the room during our stay. Since the hotel was full, that was a pleasant surprise. The room was fine, comfortable and clean. Breakfast was fantastic with a great side bar loaded with fruit and pastries and excellent hot, to-order egg dishes and French toast. The original part of the hotel, which had been a house, had a very comfortable drawing room and equally nice living room with chess sets and games. The biggest negative to the hotel was its location. Unless you want a long walk, probably around 30+ minutes, you'll have to catch a cab into shopping and dining, assuming you don't have a car. A plus is Uber started in Tasmania in December of 2016, and it's only five dollars or so with them. If you do have a car they have a very small parking area. Even if we had a rental car, however, I still would have wanted to stay in town. Driving on the "wrong" side of the road, or any side for that matter, after a couple of drinks is not a good idea.
