On the Grid : Isokon Gallery

"Based in the former garage of the Grade 1 listed Lawn Road Flats, this exhibition space showcases the history of the building which opened in 1934, the Isokon furniture and it’s notable residents which include Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Agatha Christie. After falling into disrepair and abandoned in 1990, the apartments were restored in 2004 and now provide accommodation for key workers." - Chrissie Macdonald & Andrew Rae

Fantastic small museum next to a lovely little wood. The staff were super knowledgeable about the museum and the area and were a pleasure to talk to. Totally recommend a visit. It’s not open throughout the year so this makes a nice summer or autumn activity.

Wonderful small gallery located at the iconic Isokon Flats, one of the pioneering modern buildings of 1930s Britain. The building was designed by Wells Coates (1895-1958) for Molly and Jack Pritchard. Among the famous residents were Walter and Ise Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Agatha Christie (plus a number of Soviet spies). The building also spawned the design of the eponymous Isokon furniture. The gallery and its volunteer staff do a great job illuminating the history of the building, which was lovingly restored in the early 2000s after having been quite run down. Isokon resident Paul showed us his beautiful flat. Lovely bookstore at the gallery. The design of the Isokon Flats reminded me of later designs by Zaha Hadid with its long flowing lines.

To the excellent Isokon Gallery for a Saturday nose around and then a walk up to the Heath. Great day so that combination is recommended. The Isokon is something of a modernist masterpiece and the small but very interesting Gallery is well worth a visit with tons of British design classics and a spritz of Bauhaus for added spice. They also have some interiors on display - one of the original kitchens and bathrooms. Fascinating.

What a gem for all design & architecture lovers! It's tiny but you can easily spend an hour there reading and discovering about amazing people who used to leave in Isokon flats. A little gift shop is very handy if you love cards/postcards as I do.

A small permanent exhibition situated in the Isokon building's former garage. Tells you the story of the building from 1934 to its refurbishment in 2004. Fascinating 😎 There are some excellent books on the Isokon building and architecture in general. Also a carefully curated Isokon related gift shop.

A capsule collection and concise overview of the restored Grade I Listed building, a nexus of the pre-war Modernist movement in England. Evoking the milieu, the intellectual and cultural ethos and the intriguing caste of originators, emigre residents, sojourners, architects, fellow travellers and real spies. Insight and impetus aplenty here with engaging and knowledgeable 'guides'. Albeit compact the installation is exemplary - a design for life. Revisited 6 years later - the material/insights in this contained space the corollary to modernity.
