** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. **
I had just seen the impressive "Judah and the Black Messiah" about Fred Hampton and the Illinois chapter of the Black Panthers when I caught a local program that spotlighted this bakery. Of course everything they baked looked good, but what was interesting was finding out that the bakery operates out of a building that was the original headquarters of the Black Panthers. As it turned out, I had driven by the place for years without noticing the business. So now I knew and after making an errand in nearby Temescal, I decided to stop by.
I was greeted with a friendly smile, and I was immediately overwhelmed by the selection in the display case - cobblers, cakes, pies, cookies - full-blown confections or individually packaged by the slice. This was no high-end patisserie with unpronounceable names. It was my kind of bakery, a homestyle, Sunday picnic kind of bakery. I felt I had to apologize for my delay in ordering because I was taking it all in. I just knew the 7-Up Lemon Pound Cake was something to try.
Owner Kim Cloud talked about how popular an item it was on the program. It was $6.75 for a generous slice fresh from the Bundt pan (photo: https://bit.ly/3vPPr6H). I also knew I had a weakness for Sweet Potato Pie, and a perfect-size tartlet cost $7.75 (photo: https://bit.ly/3131cIP). I brought them home to split with Jamie W., and our anticipation was palpable. Perhaps it had been so long since I tasted sweet potato pie with my memories of Lois the Pie Queen long faded, but it was so tasty. And 7-Up poured into a lemon pound cake? Kim's right, it works.
