15 Best Museums in Cape Town

"The Iziko South African Museum, home to thousands of interesting artifacts, is a retrophiliac's nirvana. As the national museum of the country, this grand and established space features fossils, stone tools, traditional clothes, and other items, some of which are almost 700 million years old. (The museum has been in the old monumental building since 1897, so it has a deep past itself.) Pick what you're most interested in—fossils? Traditional clothing?—and beeline for that area." - Mary Holland

Iziko South African Museum

"So, can you tell us a little about this place? Seems like there's a ton to see.The Iziko South African Museum, home to thousands of interesting artifacts, is a retrophiliac's nirvana. As the national museum of the country, this grand and established space is anything but an insider's secret. Yes, it draws a crowd, but given that it's been around for so long (it was founded in 1825), it isn't teeming as intensely as you might expect. Got it. So, like the Met, but not quite as claustrophic. Now walk us through the collection: What are we going to see?The Iziko South African Museum is home to thousands of specimens, including fossils, stone tools, traditional clothes, and other artifacts, some of which are almost 700 million years old. The museum has been in the old monumental building since 1897, so it has a deep past itself. Very cool. Do they ever change it up with different exhibits? There are temporary exhibitions, sure, but first-timers shouldn't miss the permanent ones on subjects like Darwin, whale skeletons, South African dinosaur fossils, and ancient Karoo reptiles. Noted—we'll check them out. On the practical tip, how were facilities? Are there places to sit, or catch your breath? This museum isn't intimidating in size, but if you need a break, pop outside to the nearby Company's Garden park and take a seat under a leafy tree. Perfect; thanks for the heads-up. How about the food situation? Is there someplace to eat inside the museum, or should we hedge our bets elsewhere? The Company's Garden Restaurant, located right next to the museum, is perfect for savoring a cup of tea and an afternoon treat under a canopy of trees and white umbrellas. Alright, let's wrap it up: Any advice for the time- or attention-challenged?Pick what you're most interested in—fossils? Traditional clothing?—and beeline for that area. Once you're in, it's easy to get out." - Mary Holland

Went on International Museum Day (A Sunday). Pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the maintenance and upkeep has been. New exhibitions to explore and more coming. Spent just over 2 hours leisurely strolling through the museum. Darwin section was also fascinating. Pity there is no coffee shop or restaurant in the museum. Bathrooms need an upgrade.

Very good experienced. Was welcomed by friendly staff. The displays are very well maintained and so much information to read. Highly recommend visiting. The bathrooms near the entrance, however, could use some attention

I found this place by accident. I didn't expect that the Planetarium would be joined with the museum, but it made for a great little afternoon to go through the museum while I waited for the Planetarium show to run. A show ticket gets you free entrance to the museum. Great deal! There are modern parts to the museum as the older parts still there. I liked that it had a large variety of things to see and yet, not overwhelm you with information about each thing. For those who get bored easily in museums, try this challenge (even kids!): Pick one subject that you see that may interest you and rest everything there about it. The rest, casually browse. This way you walk out of there learning something new with some depth. I liked how at the end of the show, there was a short lesson in identifying planets and stars using the night sky for that evening!

Went to the museum & opted for a show at the planetarium. The exhibits were of great quality and my son enjoyed them immensely. Book in advance for the planetarium as the space is limited. Be on time.

Museum about natural history of south africa. Learned quite a lot about it, although it was quite dark in some sections with the lights not on for certain parts, maybe they are doing load shedding?
