My husband has been waiting to visit for a long time now. We finally made it last weekend to celebrate his birthday. What a fun experience. We started with a cocktail in the bar while waiting for our tour. Our tour guide Madi was very informative and really impressed us with her knowledge in all thing's whiskey and bourbon and she was nice enough to take our picture. We enjoyed our tasting at the end of the tour and got a nice little treat to celebrate my husband's birthday, so sweet! Of course, we bought a couple of bottles to take home with us. We can't wait until our next visit.

Not a big bourbon drinker myself but had some friends in town and went for a tour and a tasting our guide was really friendly and we were the only two on our Thursday afternoon tour. She made the experience really special for us by answering all our questions and giving us a behind the scenes view into the bourbon making process very fun experience. The tasting was also great as she was able to guide us through each of the bourbons one by one without any additional distractions. Would highly recommend to bourbon and non bourbon drinkers alike.

Great place. Took the tour and our Tour guide Cassie was awesome and entertaining! We did the tasting tour and we all agreed the cognac bourbon was the best! Definitely will be back again! Bar for drinks and has a gift shop (stickers, glassware, shirts, hats, and more) Great venue. Also it’s a dog friendly place for those with pets. Seems like it would be a blast for groups Current drink list menu with prices from 6/13/2025.

Sometimes the best stops are the ones you don’t plan—and J. Henry & Sons Distillery proved exactly that. My wife and I were heading up to Alma, Wisconsin for a camping trip when she looked up how close J. Henry was. Only about 30 minutes out of the way, so we figured, why not? That quick detour turned into one of the highlights of our trip. The moment we pulled in, we were struck by how scenic and welcoming the property felt. It’s tucked into the Wisconsin countryside with beautiful views that make you want to slow down and stay awhile. We didn’t schedule a full tour, but just walking the grounds and relaxing in the tasting room made for a fantastic visit—and we’re already planning to come back for the full experience. The staff was top-notch—friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to share the story behind their bourbons. They made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. I opted for a flight of six different bourbons and ryes, and every pour had something special going on. The barrel strength rye? Incredible. Easily one of my favorites I’ve ever tried—smooth, bold, and full of depth. My wife was going to drive so I could drink, so she got a mocktail that she really enjoyed, which was a nice touch that made her feel just as much a part of the experience. As we were wrapping up, more people started coming in—it’s clear this place is getting the recognition it deserves. J. Henry isn’t just another distillery—it’s a destination in its own right. Great people, great vibes, and even better bourbon. We’ll definitely be back.

The day started off with a distinguished gentleman introducing himself to us. It was Joe Henry. What a gracious and wonderful first impression! He actually spent about 20 minutes just talking with us. The day just got better with a cocktail in their bar and Elista, our tour guide, was amazing. Her knowledge and background really shined. Especially at the tasting. It was a excellent experience and this Distillery can only get even more successful!

Google
What a great way to spend an afternoon. The distillery is beautiful, and our tour guide, Madi, made the experience truly special. She was a fantastic host and shared so many interesting details about the process and the history of the farm. The bourbon is truly exceptional, and the whole atmosphere felt welcoming and authentic . Five stars all around!

Google
J Henry.. I've enjoyed drinking it but wanted to learn more about it! The tour was the answer! I learned how a seed grower turned into a pretty good bourbon! We had Michael as our guide very informative! Saw the rock houses and the grounds, learned the history... But the tasting was the best! Got a sneak into the new stuff coming out too! Definitely worth the drive out into beautiful Dane County.. start out with their crafted cocktails, they were fabulous! J Henry was like visiting a relative you haven't seen in a while..

Google
Has a I’m having drinks at home feel. Bartender was great and so were the cocktails and bourbon. My scoring system is 1-2 stars would not come back, 3 stars might come back, 4-5 stars definitely would come back

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit J Henry and do the tour for many many years. Finally found a weekend to do that as well as Wollersheim Winery. J Henry was by far our favorite tour. You could tell the passion and family like atmosphere at J Henry. Our tour guide was Elista. The history and background was so interesting, it gave us a tremendous appreciation for their craft. The tasting at the end was so much fun, again, we learned so much about their brand. We then headed to the bar to continue. Next time we will take more time to try the bistro. We became fans of their bourbon and we will be back.

Yelp
Quite simple review here for this place! We had a blast; drove in through a nicely cut grove of trees. There stood this house! Entered and checked it out; quaint, interesting and homey. There was a bar in one of the rooms and there we enjoyed one of our best afternoons. The patrons that were there made for great conversation and laughter. The mixologist, bartender(s) were total fun to be around. We tasted several of their cocktails. This definitely is a must visit location and you will learn a few things as well!

Yelp
Tried JHenry & Sons whiskey at the Minnesota Monthly Spirits Classic in Minneapolis. It was excellent. My favorite was the Spooner Rye Reserve. But all of the samples were wonderful. Very nice guys working there also. This was at Orchestra Hall - so the ambiance was fabulous and fun.

Yelp
What an amazing place , the drinks are fabulous, the "bartenders " are knowledgeable and friendly. The farm , the outside activities, almost reminded me of Mount Vernon Virginia without as much history and scaled down tremendously. I tried a flight .....wow , a great overall experience

Yelp
Raquel was the absolute best in the tasting room! We came on a Friday afternoon and tasted bourbon and had a few cocktails and mocktails. The bourbon was great and the company was outstanding. Tastings are $10 for 4 small glasses. Cocktails are very reasonably priced at $10/each as well. Come check it out!

Yelp
Enjoyable afternoon spent at the tasting room. Pleasant staff and excellent bourbon flight. We also tried a few bourbon cocktails, which were very tasty (having high quality bourbon helps). The tasting room can get quite busy, so plan ahead with your drink orders.

Yelp
Enjoyed an afternoon tasting at J Henry. The distillery and bar are situated on a beautiful property. As we were not doing a tour we headed into the house with a small room for sampling or enjoying drinks, a tasting room for tours, and a small but nicely curated gift shop. There is also outside seating on the porch. Although there are signature cocktails which looked interesting I did not know this whiskey well so opted for a $10 tasting. I appreciate that although they do have a standard 4 pour, they allowed us to mix and match with blends not on that standard set. Generous pours for getting to know the whiskey. Our server brought an eyedrop and explained a process of smelling, swirling, tasting, adding water, tasting to see if the profile changes. This was greatly appreciated as the rye whiskeys for my personal taste were a bit too "grainy.' The water drops softened the taste. There are nice mocktails which our DD enjoyed, beautifully presented and fairly priced ($5). Free bottled water is available. I enjoyed the various kinds of bitters for sale- my family are huge old fashioned fans! There are cute charcuterie cups available for purchase from a local business. I hope this family run business continues its success- I would love to see the bar/indoor seating room expanded- tables were close together and with a fun-having table next to us it was pretty loud. All in all thought a pleasant way to try new whiskey.

Yelp
My husband and I visited J Henry & Sons over the weekend as part of our anniversary celebration. We are both big bourbon people so we're really excited about the experience. It did not disappoint! We started off in the tasting room where we sampled the small batch, patton road reserve, and bellefontaine reserve. Bryce, the manager, taught us about each bourbon as we tried them while also giving us some history on J. Henry. We learned all about how they developed the red corn the used at UW Madison and about the distillation process. After the tasting, Josh took us on a tour of the farm and the rickhouse. We even got to bring a cocktail with us from the tasting room. I got the bourbon lemonade cocktail. It was absolutely delicious! Josh was a super awesome tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable about J. Henry and bourbon in general. He answered tons of questions after the tour was over as well. J. Henry is a must visit! The bourbon is so unique and delicious, plus the fact itself it has a fantastic back story. Go visit and see for yourself!

Yelp
Stopped by J Henry and Sons distillery while out for a Sunday afternoon drive. It was the perfect destination. We didn't know what to expect but were very impressed by the stone entrance and beautiful wooded drive into the property. The tasting room is in a quaint old farm house with optional outdoor seating on the front porch. The cocktail menu is small but the drinks are crafted to perfection. Our favorite was the tart cherry sour with their excellent bourbon. Other options included 3 different bourbon old fashioned drinks which could be served smoked with either hickory or cherry wood upon request. The bartenders were fun and friendly. J.Henry and Sons is on my list of favorite distilleries.

Yelp
Nestled back into the trees, off a hidden Road in Dane, Wisconsin, lies the J. Henry and Sons family farm. With generations of family farming on the plot, J Henry found himself in a bit of a pickle back in the 80s and decided the best way to survive the farmers crisis of the time was to start making bourbon. And it's not just any bourbon they decided to make, but one fueled entirely by the power of Wisconsin grains, families, machinery and distillers. The tours are put on by either a member of the Henry family or the incredibly talented and certified sommelier Bryce, who takes you on a journey through the history of the farm as well as a fantastic tasting through three of their incredible products. If you're looking to enjoy a couple of hours Learning about how their bourbon is made, how to taste their bourbon, and all about how they're revolutionizing the industry, be sure to stop in as soon as you possibly can. Keep in mind that with the coronavirus they are not allowing walk in tours. You need to either call ahead or schedule online.

Yelp
Lovely small distillery that makes an awesome 5 year bourbon. Apparently, a 5 year WI bourbon is comparable to a 7-8 yr bourbon made in the South due to the extreme temps up north that pushes and pulls from the barrels. I remember going to a Whiskey Event with J. Henry being one of the tables and their standard bottle being quite memorable. The location is tucked away in the trees making it a bit of an adventure to find - but an easy drive with Gmaps. Tasting was $8 for 3 pours. Unique attribute is the red corn used in the mash bill. We even got to meet the man J. Henry! Overall a pleasant time and a good stop for bourbon.

Yelp
Such a great experience. They truly love what they do and their bourbon reflects that. Their family history and love of corn makes the bourbon dance on your tongue. We will be back

Yelp
Like dating for a long while, and then finally meeting someone you can fall in love with, but maybe because you did something really cool on the date. I like bourbon. This is good bourbon... Wait, what's that you say Kentucky snob? Hold on says I. This is American. This has 60%+ corn mash (a red heirloom varietal from the university of WI vaults). And the water comes from the Yahara watershed which is full of limestone (not a requirement). Anyway, before you interrupted, this place is lovely. The couple who own the place are both lovely and knowledgeable. The tasting room has a warm fireplace that creates a delightful ambiance on a cool fall day. Russell's Reserve 10 year is my go to. I like it, but I haven't loved it in a while. The J Henry 5 year was comparable. The J Henry Reserves proved significantly better and worth the extra investment. And between the fire, the conversation and the education, I fell in love all over again.

Yelp
Making the trip from Kentucky to Wisconsin to visit this great Distillery was so worth it! Surrounded by neighboring farms the J. Henry Henry & Sons Distillery sits on one of its original farm but it rents many plots of land to grow the important base to its spirits to include red corn. Part of this tour includes its two rickhouses. The first rickhouse sits in one of original dairy barn but it reached its capacity and so another had to be erected! That beautiful space not only houses barrels but also doubles at an event space where they even host a Kentucky Derby party each year! One of the unique aspects of this Distillery is that they do not use a pot still, they air dry their seed. Did I mention that J. Henry comes from a long line of seed farmers! The last part of this wonderful tour ends in the original Henry farmhouse that has been converted into a cozy tasting area and offices on the second floor. I say its cozy because I felt like I was in a friends open kitchen. The area consists of a kitchen, bar, tables and a fireplace. Our tasting was led by Jamie who was not only personable but had alot of knowledge in the process of making bourbon but the Henry history. We started out with some wonderful cocktails as Jamie began with her introductions. There were a great selection of cocktail to choose from including a Liz Henry concoction and its very own Dane Donkey which is basically a Mule. The Distillery is located in Dane, Wisconsin, hence the name! All in all, I will certainly return to J. Henry & sons, especially in warmer weather to enjoy the trees and fields!

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful if you appreciate bourbon you need to make this a stop in Wisconsin we will add this to our favorite destinations !

Yelp
This was a special treat in the middle of Dane WI. Went on a Friday afternoon and took the tour. Luke, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I was impressed that all the raw materials were grown right here in Wisconsin. Also, didn't realize that the distilling process didn't occur on site but in another part of Wisconsin (as a partnership with 35th Parallel). The tasting was good and we sampled a few of the Old Fashioneds as well. Talked to Joe Jr (he was behind the bar) and learned that they are planning a rye release in January 2023. Something I will look forward to! Wish they had Manhattans but maybe someday. We will be back!

Yelp
About a month or so ago, I had the pleasure of tasting a great Wisconsin Straight Bourbon called J. Henry & Sons. I had no idea just how brand new this whiskey was - everything was just bottled in March. I was intrigued to learn more about it. Today my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the J. Henry & Sons farm, where the corn is grown and the whiskey is aged. We met with Joe Henry, the patriarch, who showed us around. Joe is incredibly down-to-earth and very easy to speak with. His passion about his Bourbon is evident. He wanted us to experience and understand what was going on at his little slice of heaven. We started off in the Tasting Room, which is the first floor of the family home. The Tasting Room is currently open on an appointment-only basis, and, again, is so new that it isn't yet fully furnished. The Henrys have put a lot of thought and effort into the design of the Tasting Room. It is complete with coffered ceilings, a display cabinet for the Bourbon, a bar-height counter, and several round high-top tables to sit, enjoy and sample. We walked down to the rickhouse, which was formerly the family's dairy barn. The rickhouse exposes the Bourbon to the bitter cold winters and the warm, humid summers. There's no climate-control, the aging process is completely based upon Mother Nature. As you enter, there's a collection of experimental barrels of whiskey. The rest of the rickhouse is stacked with barrels of the J. Henry & Sons Bourbon, aging gracefully for five years prior to bottling. Using his whiskey thief, he let us sample from a barrel that had been aging only a few months. Although still effectively White Dog, you could taste the barrel's potential. In another barrel, Joe let us sample some barrel-aged, proofed water, something that could be used to marry with the aged Bourbon. It was definitely interesting (in a good way). As stated earlier, the Henrys grow their own corn. This isn't just any corn, this is a special heirloom red corn developed in the 1930s by the University of Wisconsin. The large kernels have a fatter germ that leaves more starch behind. This red corn makes 60% of the mash. The Henrys also grow their own wheat and rye. The actual distilling, while not yet done on premises, is done in Wisconsin. Aged in #3 charred barrels, the mash creates a delicious Small Batch Bourbon. Custard hits you up front, with some brioche and toffee flavors and a soft spice. The creamy custard returns again for a lingering finish. The golden amber produces incredible legs on the glass and yields a very smooth finish. We were able to sample both the 92-proof bottling and the not-yet-released 120-proof cask strength version. This cask-strength version is easily enjoyed without water and produces little-to-no burn. Found for around $50 a bottle, if the Henrys can get their name out there and entice people to sample it, J. Henry & Sons Wisconsin Straight Bourbon could (and should) become the Next Big Thing.

Yelp
Really great service. My husband and I went there at 1 o'clock on a Friday and had two flights sitting on the porch with our dog. It's a really beautiful environment and a great escape. We will definitely be back. I'd like to try one of their cocktails and do a tour.

Yelp
How does this place not have more reviews? Wow, my husband and I LOVED it here. Were there last December to celebrate his birthday. I don't remember what time we went, but were told to wait for a few minutes and then another tour would be going out. Joe Henry himself gave us and four others a tour of the grounds and provided a lot of great detail about how he got the business started and what it all entails. It felt very family-like and not like a big production type place (I hope it stays like that). The mixed drinks afterwards in the tasting room were fantastic - we had about 4 different ones to choose from after we sampled two of their bourbons. I think it was Liz who was serving us and also telling us a lot more about the family and business. A cupcake and candle topped it off for my husband's birthday, and we even got our bottle we purchased signed by Joe. We will definitely go back and bring friends and family - what a gem!!

Yelp
We enjoyed our afternoon at J Henry & Sons! There was a group of 12 of us. We had called to reserve a tasting and tour. Jamie was very excited to share all of her knowledge and stories about Bourbon and Wisconsin. I don't love bourbon, only a couple of us did, but we still enjoyed the cocktails and some tasting. You got a cocktail, plus three little tasting portions included. The farm is beautiful. The staff was very friendly. And it was a nice day doing something different. I would have preferred getting the cocktail sooner in the explanation to enjoy while we were learning about the farm. But it was a great day and if I ever needed a place for a special event, I would definitely look here.

Yelp
What a great afternoon we had at J. Henry & Sons! I made a reservation in advance to celebrate my Husband's birthday by doing a tour/tasting. We arrived to the beautiful property and walked in the house. We were greeted by friendly staff and we sat up at the bar. We had a super fun group of people and learned A LOT! The drinks were fantastic and the tour was great! We even got to meet Liz Henry who was SUPER nice! The only thing that could help them out is to have a bit more help with the tour, especially on a Saturday afternoon because we did have a few walk ins that didn't call ahead so each time they walked in we had to back track into the staff telling the whole story again. Overall, GREAT experience! Highly Recommend!

Yelp
Really not happy with their customer services. Was interested in having a party here but have waited a week to get any information regarding pricing and was told since staff quit I should look into other places. Great way to get customers by turning them away. Although was really excited to go here, very much turned off right now

Yelp
Fantastic bourbon on a beautiful farm. Fun tour and tasting. Allow 90 minutes and make a reservation.

Yelp
I enjoy J. Henry bourbon, and think the distillery is great. However, if I could make one bold suggestion... when folks come for a distillery tour/tasting, get a drink in their hand up front. I attended both the presentation at the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery, and have also taken friends to distillery for a tour. At WID we didn't have a sip for 45 min. At the distillery we waited 50 min. I think the story is great, etc., but it'd be A LOT better with a cocktail in my hand. Keep up the great bourbon!

Lisa H.

Yelp
We came to the area to celebrate our anniversary and my husbands uncle suggested that we visit J Henry and Sons. It was certainly something different to do. The bourbon was phenomenal and Tracy made good cocktails. We enjoyed the story of the history of the place. We just wished we weren't so rushed at the end since we had some questions.

Thomas G.

Yelp
J Henry is a small distillery with a small product line (bourbon only) and a small facility. (Rye whiskey to be released in summer 2019.) We've done MANY tours and tastings at distilleries in Kentucky and other states, and what makes this distillery distinctive is the tasting room experience. Our guide took the time to tell the story of not only J Henry, but of bourbon, absent the marketing hype you'll hear at larger distilleries. Bourbon is not distilled on site, so the tour is of the rickhouse only. You'll leave knowing everything you need to know of the production process without seeing a still. The tasting room experience is outstanding. Make a reservation, and allow two hours.

Yelp
I live in the Washington DC suburbs but grew up in the Badger State and was home visiting friends. Right before I left I stopped to get gas, next to the MouseHouse CheeseHouse between Madison and DeForest. It looked like a souvenir place where I could buy some Packers paraphernalia. While inside browsing among the brats and cheesecurds, I saw a display stand of J Henry Bourbon. Having never consumed bourbon from WI, I bought a bottle, and passed on the brats and cheesecurds. Fast forward 36 hours, home in Northern VA. I cracked the bottle open for a taste. I was pleased beyond words! I enjoy the mellow tang of a Jack Daniels or Woodford Reserve. The best is the exploding warmth in the belly, without burning. J Henry matched that savory sensation, but it had a better flavor than either. Hats off Cheeseheads!! What a surprise! Next time I come back, I'm coming for a tour!

P S.

Yelp
This is good bourbon, go out and visit and you get a cocktail and then tasting of their bourbon, and then a "tour"..the $31.00 for the tour is high..but you get some good whiskey
