10 Best Paso Robles Wineries to Visit
View Postcard for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines

John Grana

Google
My wife and I decided to take a road trip from Redding CA to Paso Roblas. Part just to get away, part to visit the J. Lohr Vineyard and tasting room. J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cab is my wife’s go to wine. I like a good wine, but tend more towards beer (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale!). We reserved for the last tasting of the day (3:00 PM) and arrived a few minutes early to see all the beautiful vines. It was January so they were all dormant - but it was still a dramatic sight. Nothing could prepare us for the actual wine tasting though. We went into the large tasting room and were warmly greeted. It was off season so there was just one other couple. We were given instructions on the different pairings (~6 wines per) and handed a scoring/note sheet. Our host went off to get our Wine Educator. Geraldine Horner-Holstein came to our table with a huge smile, a burst of energy and a great British accent (she grew up in the Midlands). Geraldine went through each wine we would be tasting and recommended my wife go with the tasting that was all reds (her favorite) and me a tasting that had a mix of reds, a rose and some white wines. She went into fascinating detail as we tasted the many different wines. Were the grapes were grow, characteristics of the grape itself, how they were fermented and aged. Wow, I learned a ton of information on wine and wine making. Even more fun, Geraldine has that classic British humor so she we as entertaining as she was teaching. Each wine was an incredible experience when you can compare two, get information about the wine/process and have a very knowledgeable person help you see/feel/taste the differences! It was one of the best wine tasting experiences we have ever done. I can’t recommend it enough - it is well worth the time and money!!! Ask for Geraldine if you can, but I the other two Wine Educators were also extremely friendly and knowledgeable!

Beautiful winery. Jessica was so knowledgeable about her passion for wine that my education grew. Dogs were accepted with open arms on the patio treated with biscuits and water. Upscale tasting of wines, water served in glass cups, which makes the experience more elegant.

First time in Paso Robles. J Lohr is a wine we can buy back home, so stopped in for a tasting. Geraldine was a great wine educator. She shared with us many great wines and the location of the vineyards from cooler Monterey to hotter Paso areas. You can choose from a seasonal or a legacy flight of 5 wines. Let me just say, go for the higher priced legacy flight-the wines are fantastic! We enjoyed ourselves & bought several bottles to take back with us.

Google
This is a very large winery as a business and many people may not consider visiting. That would be a mistake. Like many other large wineries J Lohr also has some unique, small release wines that taste a lot different from the grocery store fair. We were hosted by Ariane who took very good care of us. Some sips and a lot of conversation later we left very please with our experience. She was knowledgeable, attentive and engaged in the process. Of course it helps we came on a Monday. On weekend one is bound to find large parties drinking a lot and demanding. Not good for those who like to talk. I am glad we came and recommend

Google
Great range of wines, white and red, and we were heavily recommended by many folks about J. Lohr. Overall wine tasting experience was excellent, friendly and helpful folks. We did the Legacy and Winter Seasonal indoors as it was cold 1st week of January, yes both tastings and they were amazing. Our group loved the remodel of the indoor wine tasting room as we have tried to go in the past and they did a wonderful job. Took a picture of the menu of the Winter Seasonal. Hope that helps anyone, seasonal was 20 dollars and Legacy was 40? (I think). 2 bottle purchases wipe the tasting fee as in most places. Always recommend to reserve ahead of time. If you join the wine club and live further north, you can also align with the San Jose location for pickups of your wine! Other tips, it was baby friendly. Parking was easy, right off the main road. They didn't have a charcuterie board, but maybe that was due to 1st week of January, but maybe check. Go, visit, and enjoy the great wine of J.Lohr!!!

Google
Visited J Lohr Vineyards for their Legacy Tasting and was impressed. The flight of wines gave a nice overview of their reds selection. Great way to sample different varieties side by side. Staff provided helpful info about each one. Pairing with the charcuterie board made it a tasty experience. Definitely recommend checking out this tasting to learn about J Lohr's wines. Thanks for the visit!

Google
Our wine tasting experience with Gabriel was fantastic! He was warm, knowledgeable, and made the experience both fun and educational. His passion for wine was evident, and his recommendations were perfect. The wines were excellent, and the setting was beautiful. Gabriel made it unforgettable—highly recommend him for any wine enthusiast!

Lovely wines in the Legacy tasting and a great value! Shandon helped us while we celebrated a weekend away. She was so kind and passionate - so glad we came here!

Yelp
We hadn't been tasting at J. Lohr since before COVID. They charge $25 to taste there now (for the "basic" tasting) but it's waived with a 2 bottle purchase per tasting fee. No big deal. We walked out with 9 bottles of wine. Everything was good. Many people probably base their impression of J. Lohr wines on the wines available at their local store. But J. Lohr has a deep bench of quality wines, many of which you will only see at the tasting room. It's surprising how much a server can influence a person's perception of the business, and even, sometimes the wine itself. We had a wonderful server, Christine. She knows her wine and can talk wine (rather than just a rehearsed "you will taste lemons and smell flowers" baloney). She was also very generous in offering us wines that were not on the tasting list but were open. I love it when wineries do that. All in all, a wonderful visit. I don't think anyone would be disappointed.

Rick B.

Yelp
We had hoped to stop on our trip in but due to an error on their website saying they did not offer a food option, we made other plans. We have been there in the past and enjoy their wines; maybe next time

Mary Ann P.

Yelp
Such a beautiful property and fantastic wines. The guide David was so incredibly knowledgeable. He really gave us so much information about each of our selections. We ordered the cheese plate and it was so delicious. Filled with local cheeses and fruit and very generous portion.

George W.

Yelp
I've had J. Lohr wines on numerous occasions, and since we were coming to Paso Robles for a few days of wine tastings, this seemed like a good place to start. We took the indoor option as it was supposed to be hot outside (and it was). The AC worked well, and the wine tasting room is very nice. We selected the Red Wine tasting, which was nicely done with good pours. Filtered water was provided with some very nice glasses, which helped to keep us hydrated. I did order the cheese plate, which was really very good for the $25 price - three cheeses, two types of bread and nuts, and a generous serving of fruit. We started in on it before I remembered, so it's more than you see in the picture. Service was well-done and we felt well-attended to. This is a bit off of Rt 46 around 3 miles, and it's worth the trip to expand your palate.

Yelp
Our happy and exciting weekend started off with reservations to J. Lohr. This place was suggested by our good buddy, who happened to fly in from LAS to SNA, then off we went to the central coast with our party of 4....go Team Paso Robles! We arrived 15 minutes prior to our 2:30p reservations. Right away we were greeted with friendly and welcoming smiles. This craftsman style property was adorable! Beautiful interior, which was open, airy, with ample table seating inside and out. Since it was a gorgeous day, we opted to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and vast views of the vineyards. You guys, we hadn't even started our tasting yet, but we were giddy and excited with anticipation! LOL. We all did their Legacy Tasting that included all reds, which we absolutely love! We also included their Curated Cheese Plate (for 4 ppl), which is always the perfect pairing to the wines! Needless to say we became members at the end and purchased our favorites from the tasting, which was the 2019 J.Lohr Signature Cab. Our wine educator was Shandon, who was not only knowledgeable about their wines, but was simply awesome and friendly. She made sure we were taken care of from beginning to end! We're already looking forward to coming back to pick our 2024 Spring Barrel Release allocation! They do ship your wines directly to you, but it's more fun to just come back to visit, and perhaps do this all again! ;)) Thank you Shandon for making our first visit here a fun and memorable one! Till next time! CHEERS till then...

Anastasia S.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. Ray was our wine expert and took the time to explain each pour and really made the experience exceptional. The tasting room is gorgeous and we ended up leaving with bottles to enjoy at home. We will be back!

Jill M.

Yelp
We did the red tasting. Very pricey! But if you like good wine worth it. Service is fantastic!

Lisa W.

Yelp
J Lohr is a very well known wine, I've only had their grocery store Syrah and enjoyed it so we wanted to visit the actual winery. We made reservations. I don't like that it's prepaid since we had one person who was the DD and I had to call to add them, and they didn't add. But we just pulled an empty chair over. We did the tasting and bought some of the Syrah and she let us tried the off menu cab Sauvignon and we enjoyed it so bought that too. Service was knowledgeable and nice! Place is under construction so you'll hear construction noises.

Viri C.

Yelp
One of our favorite wineries in Paso Robles. The wines are absolutely delicious. The red wines such as the Cuvee Pau, Carol's vineyard Cabernet, and Malbec are my favorite. We loved the wine, scenery, and hospitality so much we became members! Nice to have an amazing winery close to home.

Rafa P.

Yelp
Great hospitality! Our host David was awesome and the experience at the winery was one of the best.

Yelp
Wine Tasting Series, Part 1 The Paso Robles Wine Country boasts more than 400 individual wineries including J. Lohr. A wine tasting here costs $20 and includes 5 different samplings during the Fall of 2022. Their current tasting menu offers a spectrum including a Rose, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but sparkling options are not offered. They are not licensed to serve full glasses of wine, so the tasting experience will be your only option. This being our first post in this series, we intend to always include the options available for those participating in the wine tasting experience...minus the wine. For those interested in this perspective at this particular location, your options are limited to only the complimentary water they provide. It is worth noting that no food options are available, so plan accordingly. And that's...Henry's Take. #pasorobleswinetasting

Janette W.

Yelp
This was our first stop on my birthday trip and it was a little underwhelming. The ground are gorgeous, but the wines were fairly mid.

Jenny R.

Yelp
If you had to pick one tasting room to go to when in Paso Robles, you must stop here. The quality of wine blew our mind! They had us at love at first taste!!! Aesthetically the tasting room was standard, no frill or amazing view but the wine quality was top-notch and pretty much ruined the trip for the other trip to see rooms that we visited for the weekend because the quality of wine here was out of this world, and the sommelier educated us with information we never knew. Love, love, love this place.

Courtney M.

Yelp
We had the best time at our tasting yesterday...I have to admit I miss the days when you could just walk in and start a tasting. We had a reservation for about a week, we were shown to the side patio where there were heaters and we were offered blankets, although it was raining we were super comfortable. Shandon was our tasting hostess and she was the BEST, her personality and sense of humor were spot on. My absolute favorite is the Gesture GSM . Yummy!

Tricia G.

Yelp
We enjoyed the tasting at J. Lohr. We have been a fan of their reds for quite some time and decided to try the whites. Beautiful crisp whites and a nice snack to keep us on our toes. Our wine educator provided excellent service and great conversation.

Connie W.

Yelp
The building looks like a simple farm house, nothing grand.  And that was how the entire visit felt, comfortable, down to earth, relaxing experience.  The view from sitting on the patio was pleasantly calming with blue sky, brown mountains, and green vines.  The outdoor furniture was of high quality.  The pours were generous.  We liked all the tastings from their small exclusive productions, which is usually not the case.  Only wished we had brought or bought some cheese or crackers to nibble on.  We especially liked their Pinot Blanc which we found to be light and floral, not tart.  Also their Petite Sirah was also outstanding, very flavorful, even better than their cab.

Sandra B.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time when we visited back in August, Dave was our sommelier he was very knowledgeable and really made our experience memorable. I will definitely recommend J. Lohr when visiting Paso Robles.

Leslie B.

Yelp
We visited the J Lohr Tasting Room in Paso Robles on a Tuesday morning. There were 11 of us. Our hostess was Geraldine. She was knowledgeable and gracious and great fun. The wines were wonderful. One of our favorites.

Marc L.

Yelp
Excellent visit to Lohr. Please make reservations so you can have a spot if you bring your own food sit outside. Service is great Jasmine was fabulous explaining what each wine would be like. Very close to downtown makes for easy driving. They do it right !

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Great service (Jennifer was our sommelier), very cute ambiance, and the charcuterie board was tasty. Make sure to get a reservation and sit inside for summer weather!

Lisa B.

Yelp
We throughly enjoyed the company of the very knowledgeable Brian Ferguson (a semiretired Scottsman) as our Tasting Room Associate and when you make your reservations you can ask for him! We were lucky with our weekday reservations to have him mostly to ourselves while he explained the benefits of vines growing on hillsides (usually robust reds) and vines grown on flat land. It was also interesting to learn about the science of watering. We love J.LOHR as a constant crowd pleaser as we enjoy spontaneous happy hours and the ease of purchasing as we travel in our RV. Thank you for a wonderful visit!

Seb G.

Yelp
Great service and extremely knowledgeable wine connoisseur. Jared is very kind and will find the right bottle of wine for you. A bit warm during summer, but definitely check out the outdoors for an unforgettable experience. Outside

Kathy B.

Yelp
Fabulous experience. Indoor or outdoor seating available. Wines were incredible. Service was top notch.

Denise L.

Yelp
Visited the J. Lohr tasting room in San Jose, and so glad to visit the tasting room in Paso in person! Beautiful and love seeing the grounds too. We had a lovely tasting and purchased their grenache rose as it's an absolute favorite. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Randy D.

Yelp
A great place to stop along the way. Their tasting room is completely remodeled. And they now have some nice, but small, outdoor patio tasting areas. The wines are good for every day, with some exceptional zins on occasion. We were wine club members for a number of years, when we were in the area a lot. They have great wine club events and perks. We ended up buying a case of wine for an upcoming party.

Jackie F.

Yelp
Pro: Got much bigger over the years, shiny new tasting room. Con: Selling out have ruined the winery feel from 10 years ago. Slow staff. You can find J. Lohr just about everywhere these days, supermarkets and mom/pop restaurants, there is really nothing special about this place. At least the wine still have alcohol in them to do the job of forgetting how J. Lohr use to be a shiny star of Paseo. Avoid this place if you think this place is special.

Allison L.

Yelp
Hello J. Lohr! We were big fans of your winery before our visit last weekend, and now we are even bigger fans! Thank you, Brian, for your outstanding service. You really made our last visit so wonderful. We came to taste on Friday, Nov 10th while we were in town for the long weekend. Brian was our server, and he took a lot of time explaining the wine and engaging in good conversation about wine. We walked out with a few cases and smiles on our faces. Thank you so much!!! Warmly, Allie and Scott

Donna P.

Yelp
WE have visited your winery and love the friendly atmosphere. Our friendly dogs enjoyed there last visit. Aloha from Halewia Wine Shop

Michael F.

Yelp
Great little tasting room and patio with a view of the vineyard. Instead of serving their wines that you can find at stores they pour a selection of small batch wines that are really nice (especially if you like reds). Had Tim as our server who was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable.

Richard L.

Yelp
This is my second review for J. Lohr. I am a very happy club member. Having traveled to Paso Robles wine country for the last 20 years or so, I find their wines to be outer-galactic! The very finest that Paso Robles can offer! My other reason for this review is the pictures I took around J. Lohr last time I was there - together with the earnest hope to film a really nice video of J. Lohr some day.

Sharon L.

Yelp
We visited J Lohr and had a fantastic time. The tastings were amazing. Our server was Geraldine and she was so fun to talk to. It was later in the day and not too many people were there tasting inside. She had such a fun personality and she even sat with us and chatted. We laughed together and told her we would be back next time. Such a fun day and so nice to have had Geraldine be our hostess. We felt like friends when we left. See you next time Geraldine!

Riley S.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Jasmine Jia gave me a card for a free tasting up to 6 people a few months ago. I called today to make a reservation and she questioned me on everything with a very snobby tone. "When did I give that to you? Where did I give it to you? What does the card even say?" She was very rude and told me she would only honor me for half of that offer. That is so wrong and makes no sense after giving me a card that was supposed to be good for 6 people. She gave me the card at my old place of employment for giving her free coffee. She said today that since I didn't work there anymore the card wasn't valid anymore. She never once said that I had to continue working there to be able to use it. The manager Derryl was also very unhelpful and not very nice. Overall I would not recommend this winery and their customer service needs some help.

B R.

Yelp
We stopped by on a whim when we needed a break in the road trip. I'm so glad we did! The property is beautiful. The wine is amazing. The staff are so knowledgeable, so friendly, so much fun to talk to and learn from!

D F.

Yelp
We visited the J. Lohr winery on our recent vacation and it did not disappoint. We were completely taken care of by the Wine Tasting Manager , Ariane. We chose 1 each of 2 tasting options and also enjoyed a Charcuterie Plate The wines were delicious and Arianes deep knowledge of each wine was so entertaining. We highly recommend a visit.... You will be glad you did!

A V.

Yelp
We've always enjoyed J. Lohr wines. Since we were in the area, we decided to visit their tasting room. It's a little off the beaten path but we finally got there. We were warmly greeted and the tasting prices were explained. ($20 for the tasting we chose - which would be refunded if we bought 2 bottles). So, we decided to do one tasting. The server was quite knowledgeable but talked very fast - causing us to have to ask repeatedly ask questions about what he just said. He also poured and quickly put the bottle away. We thought that the whites are rather light-tasting; the reds were more to our liking and wound up purchasing 4 bottles of the 2021 Cabernet.

Carlos G.

Yelp
Nice tasting room. Had reservations for outside but due to heat all tastings were indoors. 2 different flights were offered and I recommend letting Jlohr staff decide the order of pours if doing both. Jared poured wines and his knowledge of the wines. His joy for wine showed on how he thoroughly he explained everything. The wines were great!

Morgan M.

Yelp
Fantastic time here! Darryl gave us a wonderful tasting experience. Beautiful, peaceful grounds. Excellent dry, red wine. Love it!

Sarai M.

Yelp
My husband and I had a great time learning about the wine made at J. Lohr and we had someone who spent a lot of time explaining the different options for purchase. I got my tasting and a few extras so that was kind. We didn't have a reservation so they had us stand at the bar. This was a bit unfortunate as there were tables that weren't being used but we were fine.

Christy S.

Yelp
We have been drinking J. Lohr wines for many years. It was nice to finally get to the vineyard. Everyone was very nice and informative. Beautiful view of the sprawling vineyard. The is a "gotta stop" location.

Erica C.

Yelp
Due to covid we were unable to celebrate my father's 60th birthday with him last year so we knew that for his 61st we had to do something special. With covid still very much a concern we looked to the virtual world to find a way to celebrate and with my father being such a big J. Lohr fan we knew the virtual tasting was the perfect solution! We ordered the 4 cabs package and wine was delivered within a week and contained nice tasting mats with the wines. We also received an email letting us know that Darrell Marcus would be our sommelier for the tasting. I emailed Darrell giving him the background and also let him know that our family is competitive by nature and if he could, in any way, make the tasting competitive it'd be a hit! Well Darrell delivered and did NOT disappoint. He organized four rounds of trivia while mixing in fascinating information about the vineyard and the wines. He asked for feedback since it was his first trivia tasting and the entire group had nothing but positive things to say. He had us laughing the entire time and even stumped the self proclaimed wine-o's in the group. He was easy going and upbeat and extremely knowledgeable. He played to the audience and it was a hit!!! He even stayed on a bit longer for us because of all of the questions and excitement. I truly cannot recommend this tasting more highly and request Darrell if you can, you won't be disappointed except when you look up and realize the time has flown by and it's nearly over. We are going to be booking another tasting soon because we enjoyed it that much. We are also definitely ordering some cases of the Shotwell and Carol's vineyard - they were absolutely delicious. Thanks for everything, Darrell. You're an absolutely legend.

Lynn K.

Yelp
I really loved my wine tasting experience at J Lohr! My go to grocery store cab is J Lohr, so visiting the mother ship seemed to make sense! Our wine server was so knowledgeable and just made our tasting a real treat. The wine was excellent and of course I had to buy a couple of bottles! It's a lovely place to taste with wall to wall windows overlooking the gorgeous vineyards! Will definitely be back next time in Paso Robles!!

Shayla B.

Yelp
Stunning from head to toe! J Lohr aka J "Lure". They really know how to lure people in! From their tasty wine selection to the enchanting view of Paso Robles wine country, you are sure to be captivated from the moment that you walk in. J Lohr was one of my last stops on my wine tasting journey in Paso Robles. Driving up I thought, how freakin' CUTE! The exterior of the winery looks like an adorable little chapel! The interior is smaller than some of the other wineries in the area, but I would say that it's cozy and comfortable. The tasting room is open and welcoming. The environment here is totally relaxing and I wished that I could have spent way more time there than I actually did. Arne and Brian were absolutely wonderful! Super fun with great senses of humor and kept my friends and I entertained throughout our tasting. The other patrons here are very friendly as well and most of the ones that I met were travelers too. Although I enjoyed my time in the tasting room, I have to say that their outdoor area is really where it's at! Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to snap any pictures of the view, but it is most certainly magical! Their Vineyards here are absolutely gorgeous and they seem to go on forever and ever! I was most impressed with their delicious spread of red wines! You are allotted 6 complimentary reds of your choice! That's how confident that they are with their wines! And that they should be, because I practically enjoyed every one that I tasted! Since we were in a rush to eat, I was only able to sample 4 of their red wines. The two that really stood out to me the most was their 2013 Fog's Reach Pinot Noir and their and 2014 Gesture GSM 2015. The Pinot was light and fruity and the gesture was a great blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. I'm a huge fan of blends so I absolutely loved the Gesture GSM! I actually enjoyed their 2013 Highlands Bench Pinot Noir as well, but it was just a tad bit bolder than I am used to for a Pinot. All in all, this was one of my favorite wineries on my Paso Robles trip! I am looking forward to visiting J Lohr again during my next trip out to Paso!

Robin M.

Yelp
I just had my first wine tasting at J. Lohr and loved it! Valerie was our pourer and was so much fun. Awesome wines and kind staff. Thank you.

Christina D.

Yelp
Living 4 hours from Paso and being limited with travel due to high risk family members that could be impacted by the pandemic, we decided to book a virtual wine tasting with Darrell. J Lohr has always been one of our favorite places in the world to visit as wine club members with amazing in vineyard events and even a harvest dinner with Jerry Lohr himself! We were not sure how to make an anniversary feel special since we were missing a winery with delicious wine and some of the best customer service we have ever had. Darrell came to the rescue with a virtual wine tasting! He made sure we had what we needed to learn new and exciting things about the wines while being a truly enjoyable conversation that brightened up these uncertain times. Even with the number of times we have tasted, we learned so much form Darrell and his knowledge of the wine making process. He was prepared, thoughtful, and extremely knowledgeable. We also asked for other wine suggestions based on our tastes and he had great feedback! Out of all the virtual activities out there, Darrell made this one of the best experiences of the year for us. This experience is great value. From the excitement of receiving the wine to the customized experience, we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you, Darrell and the entire wine tasting team!

Sydney A.

Yelp
I do not recommend coming here. Terrible customer service. There are many other wineries that are way better.

J K.

Yelp
While one of the big-dogs on the block...totally unpretentious and worth the visit. Dave L was an incredible ambassador, downy to earth, accessible and funny. For the serious to the weekend enthusiast highly recommend!

Kristen C.

Yelp
A wonderful winery to visit! Everything you taste is different than what you can buy in store or order at a restaurant. Highly recommend the Grenache Blanc and Malbec. Make a reservation beforehand! Both indoor and outdoor seating are great. We loved our server Geraldine. She was such a joy and very educated about the wines. We will be back for many reasons, one of which is her!

Nicole C.

Yelp
Cute seating area. Tasting is reasonably priced and very good wines. Staff is knowledgeable.

Randy B.

Yelp
I have loved the J. lohr cab for years, but coming to taste has been a goal for some time. It was a breezy afternoon and I loved how we were even offered blankets to stay warm with on the patio! The staff were amazing, we loved the remodel! I was able to take home the pencil I placed my order with, waiting for the sage seeds in it to sprout in my garden. Can't wait to visit again soon!!!
