For this week-long trip, I booked all our lodging several months ago, sight unseen, relying ONLY on YELP reviews.
As we continued our trip down the coast, the Jabberwock was another inn consistently receiving 5-star reviews on YELP. So we booked a room. Like last evening's lodging, we were not disappointed. In fact, we experienced what could be described as an absolutely amazing night!
When we arrived, we were greated by John, one of the inn-keepers who showed us around his grand old home and grounds. His pride and sense of satisfaction were tangible. His tall, masculine and jovial nature, paired with his boyish grin, would make anyone feel welcomed!
After we settled in, we came downstairs to the sun porch where evening wine and hors'de ouvres were being served. John's wife, Dawn, equally affable, loving, interested, and sisterly, joined us. When we told her of the reason for our visit, which was to scatter my wife's mother's ashes in Monterey Bay, she gave my wife (Susan) a big hug. She left the room and moments later returned, informing us that she was upgrading us into the Borogrove Suite.
It's almost as if an angel had communicated my wife's needs to Dawn who responded in kind, settling us into the most perfect of rooms where we could rest, decompress and reflect on the events of the day. Wow!
For dinner, Dawn recommended the Chart House and when we arrived, we received a custom-printed menu with our names at the top. And for dessert, we were served a key-lime pie dessert, compliments of the Jabberwock. What a classy touch!
We walked back to the Inn, and upon our entry into our room, a bouguet of yellow tulips graced the table in front of the sofa. Little did Dawn know that tulips are my wife's favorite flower and yellow was one of her mother's favorite colors. Another wow factor!
We shut the door, snuggled together on the sofa in front of the fireplace and in the dimly lit room, shared memories of Susan's mother. How perfect!
Dawn offered to serve breakfast in our room if we needed privacy. Instead, we opted to dine with the other guests and we're glad we did. Susan made a connection in the medical communication field with one guest and one couple was visiting from Norway so we reminisced on our 1994 visit to Norway and Sweden. What a small world.
We would love to have stayed another night or two, but we had to leave. I know I should end this review with a quote from Lewis Carrol, but one of William Shakespeare's seems much more appropriate " ... parting is such sweet sorrow."
We'll definitely be back.
