The United States of Abandoned Places

"Resting near the banks of the Alabama River is the fictional town of Spectre, although all that remains of the bucolic burg are the crumbling husks of abandoned film sets. In the 2003 film Big Fish, the lead character visits the idealistic town of Spectre at multiple points in his life. As a young kid, he spends time in the town during its bright, well-mowed heyday, only to return later in his life to find the town to be dilapidated and rotting. The man eventually saves the town, and visits it for a final time to find it fixed up once again. In reality, the facades of Spectre were built on a private island on the Alabama River. When filming wrapped, the crew simply left the buildings standing alongside the styrofoam trees and other set dressings. The rundown version of the town was the last to be filmed, so when the sets were abandoned they already looked as though they had been neglected for decades. Initially, the whole of the main thoroughfare had been left on the property, leaving the houses, stores, and chapel of Spectre flanking the main road for other wanderers to find. Sadly, a few years after filming had ended, some of the storefronts began to sag and collapse. When the owners tried to clear away the debris, sparks from the fire went across the road and caught other buildings on fire. All of the “town’s” commercial district was lost. The character Jenny’s house on the river was torn down after flooding made it unsafe.   As of early 2017, visitors to the island can still view six homes, the church, two trees from the spooky forest, and the columns from the front of Jenny’s house. You might also decide to add to your shoes to the line, as many others continue to do." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Park is beautiful! Walking around and interacting with goats is a neat experience! There is food for goats over by the bathroom. Big Fish movie set is old and in ruins but it somehow adds to the appeal!

Really cute lake and camp site (complete with goats) as well as the home of the town of Spectre - the film set of Big Fish. Lots of trees and Spanish moss, and even some nice swings to sit by the lake in. Not overly crowded, and the goats were just in one area if goats aren't your thing. With people fishing, kayaking, and walking pups, it's a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Very pleasant walk. The goat kept me company for a bit. There's lots of shade, restrooms, picnic areas, a playground, fishing, boat ramp, and rv hookups. Big Fish was filmed here and the set (town of Spectre) built for the movie remains.

Lovely place to go anytime your feeli g lonely bored sad or just for a fun filled outing! If you've seen or not seen the movie BIG FISH it's just overall a great experience. Love the goats and the beautiful little replica Town. The buildings are so beautiful and the shoe wire is absolutely different and a cool thing to be a part of! Bring a old pare of shoes to throw up on the string between the trees! :)

Wonderful. Had a great time. My 2 year old loved the goats. The old town set was interesting. The island was quiet, peaceful and kept up. The guy they had working there was a hard worker and you could tell. All in all, a delightful experience. Will return and have already told multiple friends of our positive experience.

I called to make sure there was space to camp before riding 5 hours on a motorcycle with my son who was excited to see the goats and movie set. The gentleman that answered the phone said there was space and told us to try to be there before dark. We arrived at 6:30pm, which was after dark, and were told we couldn’t camp because he had locked the gate. It would have been helpful if he had told me on the phone not to bother coming if we were going to be there 30 minutes after dark instead of saying “try to be here before dark”. We are now in a hotel in Montgomery. Thanks a lot.

We visited for the afternoon to check out Spectre and Jackson Lake Island was a pretty magical place. Spectre is such a cool location and exploring the old set was exciting! We aren’t campers, but if that’s your thing, this would be a beautiful spot to stay with your RV or tent! Lovely lake, pretty views, quiet and peaceful, fishing and the GOATS! So charming. To get on the island there’s a gate with a code to add to the safety and security of the place. It costs $5 a person to visit.

So much fun. This is the leftover set from Big Fish (great movie). Great place to walk, look around, swing in the breeze. Place has a solid 50 goat population that will let you pet them. Bathrooms available, plenty of covered picnic areas. $5 per adult--- $3 per for kids
