I like volunteering. I believe in giving back to the community. I think it helps both the organization and the volunteer. Some non-profit organizations are well run.
However, at times, you will run into some organizations that lack any direction. This is one of them.
The Jacob Riis Settlement caters to the low income community of Long Island city. A noble cause, the full time staff needs volunteers to help them in their operations.
One of which includes the communications dept. I had a chance to work on an editing project with this dept. The director of communications told me to download a Microsoft program specially designed for the Mac. So I did. My computer crashed. I don't think that was worth it. It was just a volunteer opportunity - not a real job. I told her about what happened. She responded like nothing happened - she brushed it off. I offered to come in to work on the project at the office. She said no and she prefers to work by sending text via email.
I don't appreciate that. Using my computer to work on a volunteer opportunity and it crashes? I don't think so.
She later contacted me to see it I was available for another editing volunteer op. I told her that I was busy with a full time job (which I was). I told her the best way to avoid any text re-formatting would be to work on the same computer.
She responded, "thank you for your feedback. Best".
Very cold, unfeeling, and unprofessional on her part. I gave her suggestions and yet it fell on death ears. And she's the director?
I suggest whoever wants to volunteer here go somewhere else where people will be more professional and aware. Not blinded by their titles or professions.
