Jaffna Archaeological Museum is a regional history museum in Nallur, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, located on Navalar Road behind the Navalar Cultural Hall. It was established in 1978 on land donated by the Arumuga Navalar Foundation and is maintained by the Department of Archaeology. The museum houses an important collection of antiquities and artifacts that reveal the rich cultural heritage of the Jaffna Peninsula from ancient times through the colonial era. Exhibits include Buddhist and Hindu stone sculptures and religious objects, coins from different historical periods, wooden carvings, pottery, and items uncovered from archaeological sites such as Kandarodai. The collection reflects the region’s religious traditions, daily life, craftsmanship, and historical influences, making it a valuable stop for visitors interested in the history and archaeology of northern Sri Lanka. The museum is small but insightful, and entry is generally free, though it’s good to check opening hours before visiting as it can be closed on Tuesdays and some public holidays.
