A cozy and heartwarming place to stay! Clean, fresh air, and everything works just fine. The wardens take great care of you and are as gentle as fluffy sheep. Warmest regards to the solid Jailhouse team — please stay just where you are, so I can come visit you again! I’ll definitely be back! ❤️

4 star hostel. booked a double w/tv to be close to train station. Nice staff, proud of their facility. Basic accn - it is a cell you are staying in after all but very clean, comfortable bed, shared facilities, and common areas, in an interesting and historic building. If sound sensitive, advise earplugs as the atrium really carries sound. Folks are mostly respectful tho. Area is ok for bars, fast food etc but I liked a little quirky tea/coffee shop called Portershed. Hostel is easy to get to- from central bus station, no 7. Glad I stayed. By the way, the best bus station I've ever been in.

An absolutely fabulous place. Really playing on yhe history of the building all while still giving privacy, security and fun.Location is super close to a variety of restaurants, cafes and take-away stores, and a general store for those forgotten small items.Parking is free but it's a first come, first serve scenario. I loved staying there and highly recommend to any traveler looking for a funky and reasonably priced accommodation.

Very unique Accommodation. It was an old prison and you definitely recognize and feel the flare of it. Perfect Spot for short to midterm stay in Christchurch. Very nice people and staff. Big Kitchen with everything you need. Also got some parking spots in front.

If you're in Christchurch, there's no better place to spend the night. It's very well located, near a Burger King and a Thai restaurant. The place is literally an old prison, so sleeping here is a unique experience. They also give you free snacks if you post on Instagram that you've slept there. It has a laundry service, and the rooms are very comfortable. All public areas are spotless.

The ONLY thing I could fault this place on was the uncomfortable mattress, where you feel every single spring digging into your skin and bones. My free foam mattresses provide a more comfortable sleep! In saying that - you get what you pay for. It’s basic accommodation for the rooms. The staff I would give more than 5 stars if I could. Super friendly, welcoming, accomodating and exceeded all expectations. Thanks for having us!

Awesome atmosphere and staff. Clean room and toilets with addition to great prices. If I am going to stay in Christchurch again, this will be the first spot I would book.

Was going to stay here but after hearing about steep stairs and how they play on the fact it's cells not rooms... Stayed elsewhere, location not walking distance for what I needed and person on the phone did not impress me to stay. Could of been okay if you like back packers, one day price was $80 then 2 days later $100 and I got hotel for only $160 and loved my hotel elsewhere. Price going up after 2 days put me off.

Yelp
What an interesting place to spend the night! Lots of college age guests, you can definitely come here and network/meet many people from other countries. The joint bathroom design may not appeal to some, but it's really not that bad. The beds were comfortable, the staff were super friendly, and we did not have a problem finding parking. The prices are also very appealing, way cheaper than most accommodations around the area. If you're traveling light, stay here!

Yelp
Cool place for a hostel! I feel privileged to be able to stay at a place like this. Nice old history, or old... The last inmate was put here in 1999 if we understood it correctly. They've kept some cells, used metal bar doors as tables and they kept original doors and stuff. Really neat. Good service, BBH card works, same price for twins, doubles, singles. 89$ January. Really clean kitchen, good places to sit, small cinema room AND TV lounge with DVDs, DVD player in the room (!) and a pool table! Perfect place to stay for a night. I highly recommend it. 500mb wifi is included. Parking just outside for free. How awesome is that!
