Jaja Ding Dong - Gastro Obscura

"For years, Húsavík was a low-key fishing village known for whale watching in Iceland’s Diamond Circle. Now, thanks to Will Ferrell and an Oscar-nominated power ballad, the tiny Nordic town has garnered international acclaim. At this beloved local bar, you can discover the whole fascinating story from proud Húsavík residents. Netflix’s 2020 musical comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga warmed hearts with the fictional story of a Húsavík pop duo Fire Saga’s (Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams) journey to the Eurovision Song Contest (a very real TV competition). The movie delighted former Húsavík council president Orly Orlyson so much that he spearheaded a viral Oscar campaign for its soundtrack and opened a Fire Saga-themed bar and Eurovision exhibition. Named after Fire Saga’s feel-good anthem, JaJa Ding Dong is a cozy pub not unlike the Húsavík bar the film depicts. A well-made cocktail menu inspired by the film fuels singalongs and tipsy tours around a small gallery of sequined costumes and flashy props. Tours are sometimes led by Orlyson who is also a local celeb, having founded Húsavík’s Exploration Museum and personally led astronaut expeditions across Icelandic volcanic fields. Don’t be surprised if you find him on a bar stool entertaining hosting explorers or Hollywood stars (they often stay at his family’s adjoining hotel) or even personally leading a round of JaJa Ding Dong. The song is, after all, requested by patrons as many as 30 times a day. Know Before You Go Honor Icelandic superstition and leave a little souvenir (like whiskey or biscuits) for Húsavík’s elves like Rachel McAdams does in the movie. Several tiny fairytale houses can be found outside the bar." - barbarawoolsey

We stopped in to have a beverage and check out the exhibit. The patio furniture was very, very comfortable. We sat long after our beers were finished chatting with other guests and sharing the space of course. The best entertainment was provided by two young women (staff) who were untangling the flag. Their persistence paid off and the flag finally fluttered!

Although my wife and I only had coffee we really liked the bar and had a fascinating chat with the father of the owner who is an interesting character. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Husavik is lovely little town and well worth a visit.

Cute cafe attached to the museum and hotel. Truly like in the film where everyone has multiple jobs, the bar staff also work in the hotel so you may need to poke your head in there if no one is about!

The Eurovision museum is made with so much love! It was a bucket list item and I’m so happy I cold make it. Had the Husavik Cocktail and would recommend this place - especially for Eurovision Fans.

Look… as a tourist I expect to pay more. That’s fine, I know what I am getting myself into. Having said that, this is an incredibly egregious example of a tourist trap. 3750 kr (approx $30USD) for an incredibly pathetic bagel (one tiny slice of salmon). At that point you’re just taking people for a ride. We chose not to go into the museum because the bar was so disappointing. The staff were incredibly lovely though and the girl serving us was sweet and accommodating.

The exhibit was awesome! We watched the movie and thought the bar and exhibit would be something cool to check out, and it was! P.S, it makes the movie even better.

TOURIST TRAP!!!! Don’t even enter this restaurant / museum. 1) The menu is extremely pricey. Only 3 options in lunch menu (soup , bagel, and fermented shark) the fermented shark has only 1 piece. The pic shown are 2 sets!! Just a tiny piece with a shot, cost: 2750 ISK !!! 2) wrongly enter their museum and charged 2000 ISK. There is no any signage or reminder at the entrance. My friend thought it is free to enter and simply walk in for a look. My friend left their “museum” within 30 seconds. When my friend came out, one of the staffs said “have u paid?” Then charged my friend 2000 ISK for entry fee!!!! THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS!!! AVOID IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!!!!
