This Caribbean Destination Has Bioluminescent Waters and Gorgeous, Uninhabited Islands — and It's a Short Flight From NYC

"Gliding my clear-bottomed kayak into Mosquito Bay after dark felt otherworldly: the underwater world beneath me lit up like fireflies, and experiencing that glow while paddling off Vieques was nothing short of magical." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. The customer service was amazing. I broke my sandals on the beach and saw they had swimming shoes as well. Angie was so nice. She grabbed a chair for me to try in different styles . I grabbed a nice pair for a decent price. They also have coffee and ice cream. I bought an iced latte and had a great chat with people in the store. This place is a MUST VISIT when you go to Vieques. God, willing, I'll be back!

This was our second bioluminescence tour with Jak Water Sports, and it did not disappoint. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and dedicated to ensuring we experienced the mesmerizing blue glow of the water while paddling our kayak. Perfect for adventurers aged 13 to 74, it's an unforgettable experience for all.

Something that no picture or videos can properly capture and no words can truly describe. Just gotta experience it in person! And Jak is highly recommended. David was an amazing guide and the ladies helping the front desk were so nice. Make sure to try their coffee as well! Very happy I booked my tour here.

We went for a kayak tour in Mosquito Bay and loved it! Our guide was excellent and did a great job making sure everyone in the group stayed together. Our group also didn't seem too big, at least compared to some of the other groups out there. The tour was also very informative, which I want expecting. We learned a lot about the bioluminescence and what caused it, and our guide also did a fun little astronomy lesson and pointed out planets and constellations. Great experience!

Loved how decorated their location was for Christmas, even the bus was done up with Christmas lights! We did a bio bay tour with them and the guide was very informative. Kayaking was easy. And no one told me how fun the bus ride to the bay would be, lol! We came back one other day to stop in for ice cream.

Pictures don't do it justice, GO ON THIS TOUR. Its so much better and brighter than the one in Lajas. The amount of knowledge they drop on you during the tour makes it worth it alone. Its clear they care about the bay and want to keep it as pristine as it is. When you are done hop on down the the bar a few doors down and hang out with the locals and a few tourists you will not be disappointed.

If you want to see bioluminescence, go to Vieques and take this tour! It is worth the additional effort of going to the island, and there are beautiful beaches too. No issues going as a solo traveler. The bioluminescence tour with Jak Water Sports was a wonderful experience. The guides were very knowledgeable, friendly, funny and respectful of the natural wildlife and land. We went in pretty deep into the forested area which was a fun experience in itself since it was so dark. Highly recommend planning your trip around a darker night, I went with a crescent moon on a cloudy night in early December and the bioluminescence was very bright! It was beautiful to see the plankton and fish in the clear bottom of the kayak (photos don't do it justice). Thank you Jak for making this an unforgettable experience!

This was the excursion that I was most looking forward to. Unfortunately Jak Water Sports did not deliver. The staff at check in were not very friendly. The bus driver, Luz, was the rudest person we met on our 10 day trip. The excursion itself was very rushed. The guide seemed like he could not get through it fast enough and came back early. It was overcrowded (other companies had much smaller groups). The kayaks were not entirely clear (other companies had entirely clear ones and it makes a difference). I think the experience itself is worth it, but please pick a different company so it isn’t ruined.
