50 Best Places to Travel in 2019

"It joins Havelock's other main draw, the charming boutique hotel Jalakara, which opened in late 2015 with just three rooms, three suites, and a private villa on an old banana and betel nut plantation." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Why Your Next Island Getaway Should Be In India

"Boutique hotel Jalakara is surrounded by coconut, betel nut, and banana trees. It's imperative that you tack on a couple nights in the villa, or one of the six rooms or suites, at Jalakara, a two-and-a-half-year-old retreat surrounded by betel-nut and banana trees in the rainforest on Havelock Island. “Havelock is Maldives meets Costa Rica meets India of yesteryear,” says Mark Hill, an English chef and entrepreneur who, along with his fashion designer wife, Atalanta Weller, run the boutique hotel. Many were skeptical of their decision to steer clear of the beach and focus instead on an interior, but the couple had other plans. “The beach is the beach, but the forest encapsulates the extra wildness that comes from the Andamans.”"

We had a fantastic 10 day stay at JALAKARA. The location, high up in the jungle and within easy reach of all major beaches, is peaceful and ideal. The food is fantastic, with plenty of options for fresh fish and seafood. The rooms are nicely decorated, each with it’s individual style and good amenities. Best of all, the staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble, are super friendly and efficient, and make you feel completely at home. We did yoga each morning, which ( although sometimes challenging!) was a great way to start each day. The other optional acticvities are also well organized but informal and fun. Thanks to all the team at Jalakara for making this a perfect stay!

Beautiful small hotel set in jungle but short distance from Radhanagar beach. Rooms were really nice and comfortable with 2 children. The staff were friendly and happy to organise trips from the hotel. The dining experience was exceptional with great fresh seafood. We nearly tried everything on the menu. Overall, extremely relaxing. We didn’t want to leave and already wondering when we will be able to go back.

Staying at Jalakara has been an experience of a lifetime, and I assure you there's no exaggeration there!! While I'm sitting at their beautiful deck wrapping up my last meal, I can't help but let people know that this should be their thing to do if they decide to visit Havelock!|Activities|Before we got here, we got in touch with their wonderful manager, Kirti and planned out all our activities. He's been on the island for a while now and you can blindly trust his recommendations! He helped us plan a nice chill evening at the beach, bioluminescent kayaking, scuba and island hopping!! He also made sure our scooty was available the moment we arrived and we were ready to go!!|Rooms & Hospitality|The staff at Jalakara is extremely thoughtful and genuinely cares for you!! We had Senpoo and RC taking care of all our needs before we even had to ask. The rooms were maintained really well and the turndown service as well as daily room service was on point.|We stayed in the villa so we had our very own pool, a beautiful bath tub and an equally wonderful bedroom!!|We were pampered through and through and are leaving with our hearts full!!|Food|I needed a separate section for the food because OH MY GOD!! IT WAS SOME OF THE BEST SEAFOOD IVE EVER HAD!! They have a catch of the day menu which you can select during the day and is ready by dinner for you. Everything we had - the lobster, the squid and the tiger prawns - it was all carefully crafted and just an explosion of flavors!! We actively decided to have all our meals at Jalakara because we were sure nothing could beat their chef!! Special mention to their momo and noodles that we had during the day - they were just perfect!! Breakfast was great to - their puri bhaji is killer!!|Spa|We signed up for their "three senses" massages on two separate days and Christine and Laxmi were the best!! We did lemon grass and sandalwood oils and came out feeling extremely energized and very relaxed!!|All in all, Jalakara did what we expected!! It has character, beautiful views and the best service one could ask for!!

We enjoyed a wonderful 5 nights at Jalakara. The team looked after us so well - some of the most friendly, excellent service we have experienced but without any fussiness. As a result we were able to truly relax and enjoy our stay thanks to the team's kindness. We stayed in the Garden Suite which was luxurious with an amazing outdoor shower & bath. The food was exceptional and we enjoyed fresh fish, tiger prawns and other dishes cooked to perfection. Add in some wonderful spa treatments and yoga and we had the most wonderful stay. Thank you.

Excellent quality of service on all levels. Beautifully appointed rooms. Quiet location. Great fresh food. Extremely helpful and friendly but also discreet. I couldn't fault the service. This level of service is unfortunately rarely seen. A big shout-out to the whole team. Thank you for making my stay so memorable. I would fully recommend Jalakara.

Our stay didn't start well with a distubed night because (as we discovered in the morning) the toilet was leaking and the cistern squeaked loudly all night. So then there were men in our room all morning until 2.30pm and yet there was no apology from the Manager. We felt the management were rather resting on their laurels based on all the excellent reviews. |The pros were the lovely green location and the pool and the wonderful service from RC who seemed to do all the work. But the biggest issue for us was no alchohol and we had not been warned of this in advance. One of the staff offered to get us a bottle of bubbly but then charged us three and a half times the shop price for it - so beware!|Our Tower room was quite nice although we didn't use the top terrace because it was accessed by a steep open staircase and then you had to push open a heavy overhead door. When it rained there was nowhere comfortable for us to sit as there was just one chair in the room. The kitchen area had hard seating so the only place to say, read a book, was the reception area known as Mission Control. But then you were disturbed by guests coming and going and there was music on repeat so that by the time we left we knew the song list. Other issues: the loungers by the pool were hard with no cushions, the steep stone steps weren't swept of leaves and so became dangerous when it rained, and menu items often weren't available, limiting our food choices.

Toghether with my wife we spent a few days at Jalakara and there are no words to describe how beautiful and calm this place is. Every detail is curated with the maximum attention. Every room has a different style and forniture that swings from vintage and modern with a common denominator: elegance. The infinity pool overlooking the jungle which gives an incredible touch. We are travelling through India since a month now and this place provided us with the most amazing food every day we decided to eat here(on an other level if you compare it with the taj) 3 km away from the most beautiful beach of havelock. We organised a scooter rental at the hotel which allowed us the freedom to move at any time. Only a few rooms here and the amazing staff makes you feel home. Sadly we didn’t make it for the big Islands beach hopping tour with privat hotel boat because of the rough sea( we can’t command the weather ) but maybe next time :) Kirti, the manager , was always ready to provide all the informations we needed and made sure we had the most incredible stay. There isn’t a single down point of this place(just the sea view is missing, but at this point…who cares! ) What else can I say? If you re looking for a get away from traffic and crowded places then Jalakara is definitely a MUST STAY place in the andamans. Thanks again to Kirti and the staff. And thanks to the owners Mark and Atalanta for putting their love and vision into an old plantation turning it into a little paradise.

One of the best boutique hotels! It’s where you’d go to truly escape a hectic city lifestyle and immerse yourself into a 5 star island life, surrounded by jungles. I stayed for a week here to go scuba diving and it was so memorable. The gorgeous sunsets that you can see from the hammock, the amazing food, the music, the staff who looked after me so well, the wonderful pool.. I honestly didn’t want to leave. ||I got the Blue suite which was perfect for lying in the hammock and watching jawdroppingly gorgeous sunsets. Every morning when I had to get up at 5am to go scuba diving, the staff prepared a packed bag with snacks, towels and water to take with me. The bathroom decor was authentic Indian and had a rain shower. The common areas are designed to bring utter relaxation. The laps in the pool were something really special at sunset, looking out into the jungle. Great turndown & laundry services. Food quality was excellent and each day was a treat.||The manager, Kirti did a wonderful job considering all my special requests and organising everything seamlessly.
