50 Best Places to Travel in 2019

"It joins Havelock's other main draw, the charming boutique hotel Jalakara, which opened in late 2015 with just three rooms, three suites, and a private villa on an old banana and betel nut plantation." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Why Your Next Island Getaway Should Be In India

"Boutique hotel Jalakara is surrounded by coconut, betel nut, and banana trees. It's imperative that you tack on a couple nights in the villa, or one of the six rooms or suites, at Jalakara, a two-and-a-half-year-old retreat surrounded by betel-nut and banana trees in the rainforest on Havelock Island. “Havelock is Maldives meets Costa Rica meets India of yesteryear,” says Mark Hill, an English chef and entrepreneur who, along with his fashion designer wife, Atalanta Weller, run the boutique hotel. Many were skeptical of their decision to steer clear of the beach and focus instead on an interior, but the couple had other plans. “The beach is the beach, but the forest encapsulates the extra wildness that comes from the Andamans.”"

The Jalakara, Andaman Islands, India - Explore & Book

"Havelock may not be the easiest place in the world to get to, but boy, it's worth the effort. A coral-ringed island with some of the most spectacular beaches on earth and an abundance of nature's other pleasures awaits: mangrove creeks teeming with birdlife and crystal-clear seas filled with a dazzling array of aquatic life. And now there’s another reason to go: this stunning retreat carved into the virgin rainforest with 6 stylish suites, a private villa and a 16m ozone infinity pool. It was an overgrown banana plantation until British chef and entrepreneur Mark Hill enlisted a crack team of architects, artisan builders and crafters to clear the land and blend traditional Indian materials and techniques with fluid lines, modern minimalism and imagination. The result is a sublime hideaway with a laid-back vibe and luxe finishes. Rooms are arranged over staggered levels, leading down to an expansive decked platform and the glittering infinity pool. There’s an open-air massage suite, yoga classes, even a badminton lawn. Book island hopping excursions, private beachside picnics and jungle foraging walks then return here for a sundowner and some of the best views on the island. Highs The back-to-nature vibe with the spoiling benefits of a top hotel Cool and clean suites with dreamy bathrooms and bags of indoor and outside space Delicious food, with a seafood focus and tropical breakfasts The fun, sociable open-air bar and lounge; there’s a great cocktail menu and even a film projector for movies under the stars A perfect place to relax and rejuvenate - surrounded by virgin rainforest and no phones or TVs to distract you Lows We were the very first guests so we didn’t see some of the finishing touches, but we’re assured it’s firing on all cylinders now The hotel does not currently have a licence to sell alcohol on site - but you're free to BYO from duty free No WiFi in the rooms, but that's half the point (if you need to connect, there's WiFi in the bar/lounge) It's a remote island so getting here is an adventure, and things can be unreliable when you arrive - expect occasional power cuts (though there are now back up generators) or a shortage of produce from the mainland" - Sarah de Vere-Drummond

Hard to fault this glorious place. There is a lot of thought, sensitivity and attention to detail that has gone into Jalakara. The rooms are beautiful and peaceful retreats and very comfortable. Everything you might need without the clutter. The food is sensational. Our children anticipated each meal with huge excitement, which has made it difficult to live up on that front at home. And all raised to a higher level by the gentle kindness and professionalism of the staff. The hotel is well situated for any excursions - all of which we would recommend. All in all - we would highly recommend Jalakara.

5 nights at the Jalakara was intended to be highlight of our tour of this part of India and we weren't disappointed. We stayed in the Tower room and loved the outdoor bathroom overlooking the jungle with all the strange noises from the local wildlife. The staff were all very helpful and the food was superb. As a vegetarian cynic, I was won over by some of the dishes on offer. |We only had really had one complaint. We enjoy a cocktail or a cool beer by the pool and perhaps wine with dinner. When we got there there was no gin, no vodka, no beer and two bottles of supermarket wine. A bottle of vodka appeared on day 4! I know hat there are supply problems caused by the local administration but other establishments seemed to have got round the problem somehow. Perhaps a tip to future guests would be to bring a bottle of your own favourite duty free to avoid disappointment. |But this was just a minor disappointment in an otherwise excellent stay.

It’s fair to say that a rough ferry crossing and a total of 32 hours door to door home made me forget to do this review! Jalakara is just amazing, we felt we were staying with friends from the minute we arrived who had perfected the art of knowing when to ‘entertain’ and when to give space. From the moment we arrived we felt at home and very relaxed, every member of staff were so delightful and nothing was too much trouble. Rooms & environs were beyond expectations & everything you could possibly need had been considered. This really is a very special place! Now food- our favourite subject- incredible! Cooked to order, clearly prepared with love from local and home grown ingredients- some of the best food we have ever had . Definitely worth the journey & would do it again

Jalakara was one of the best places we have ever stayed at. From the minute we walked in we felt right at home, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, the service is relaxed, friendly and highly attentive. The food at the restaurant is definitely the best on the island, beautifully presented and completely delicious. We stayed 7 nights and wasn’t enough, would recommend to everyone!!

This is the absolute jewel of Havelock Island. You will feel at home here. Everything was perfect. From the details of the tasteful room, the choice of music at dinner, the view of the greenery to the incredibly fine-tuned Andamanese cuisine that we enjoyed with gusto. Every member of the staff looked after us with a smile and kindness. It's a place that will stay in your heart and make you want to come back.

Jalakara is the epitome of sustainable luxury—a true hidden paradise that exceeded every expectation! I recently experienced a stay at this eco-friendly resort, and every detail was thoughtfully curated. The beautifully designed rooms, especially the Sky Room and Tower Room, are simply stunning. The Sky Room boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the sprawling landscape, making every sunset a mesmerizing experience. Meanwhile, the Tower Room offers an exclusive elevated perspective, allowing you to soak in the resort’s lush surroundings from a unique vantage point. The sunset views across the property are absolutely magical, offering a spectacular display of colors each evening. Evenings here are made even more delightful with a fun selection of board games to enjoy. Culinary delights are at the heart of the experience—masterfully crafted cocktails paired with the freshest, most delicious seafood redefine dining in a serene setting. What sets Jalakara apart further are the unforgettable excursions they organize, including trips to a secret beach, serene forest walks, and exhilarating snorkeling and scuba diving adventures. These experiences blend relaxation and adventure, ensuring every moment of your stay is memorable. Overall, Jalakara seamlessly combines sustainability, luxury, and adventure, making it the perfect destination for those seeking both comfort and an active, nature-infused lifestyle. Highly recommended! 5 stars!

We had a fantastic 10 day stay at JALAKARA. The location, high up in the jungle and within easy reach of all major beaches, is peaceful and ideal. The food is fantastic, with plenty of options for fresh fish and seafood. The rooms are nicely decorated, each with it’s individual style and good amenities. Best of all, the staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble, are super friendly and efficient, and make you feel completely at home. We did yoga each morning, which ( although sometimes challenging!) was a great way to start each day. The other optional acticvities are also well organized but informal and fun. Thanks to all the team at Jalakara for making this a perfect stay!

Beautiful small hotel set in jungle but short distance from Radhanagar beach. Rooms were really nice and comfortable with 2 children. The staff were friendly and happy to organise trips from the hotel. The dining experience was exceptional with great fresh seafood. We nearly tried everything on the menu. Overall, extremely relaxing. We didn’t want to leave and already wondering when we will be able to go back.
