On the Grid : Jalisco

"Let’s be real: our interest in Jalisco is more anthropological than culinary. Yeah, the cheese dip and salsa are pretty good, but the sangria is terrible and vast expanses of the menu are hot garbage. That said, Jalisco is fascinating for its longevity and the love and loyalty it receives from the (mostly) Peachtree Battle Avenue area folks who seem to form the majority of the clientele. The bottom line is this: everything you need to know about Jalisco is engraved into the brass trophy plaques loyal customers purchase and install on the restaurant’s fixtures, chairs, and walls to commemorate birthdays, graduations, engagements, and the like. Having your name on one of those little plaques is a matter of street credibility. You can tell us you’re from Buckhead, but if we can’t find your name somewhere inside Jalisco, we’re going to need to see another form of documentation." - Office of Brothers

Google
My husband always brags about this place, so we finally checked it out. I was not disappointed at all. The service was insanely fast!! We were in and out under 40 minutes for lunch!!!! The food was excellent, especially the Pancho dip!! The pricing for a dip, two entrees, and drinks was under 40, very affordable.Highly recommend!

Google
It is a great spot for casual hang outs with family and friends. Fast service, especially Oliver was great.

Google
This place is a long-time institution. I contend their salsa is one of the very best in all of Atlanta. Great flavor, good heat, very balanced. You can't stop eating it. Most times, severe pints leave with me. It's a bustling, casual place with a great energy. You can feel the good vibes. The service is always super efficient. You don't wait long, except maybe to get seated, at times. The food is exceptional. From basic tacos 🌮 and bean burritos 🌯, to fajitas, quesadillas, and steaks, the food sings. I have never had anything but a fulfilling sentiment when I leave. Among the upper echelon of Mexican restaurants in the entire metro area.

Jackson

Google
This is the best queso you will ever have. The fajitas are also amazing. Very good service and good would recommend!

Google
This is an old school Mexican American restaurant. It hails from the days when every Mexican restaurant in Atlanta had the same menu and the number 11 was a burrito, taco, and an enchilada. Has that same menu. It definitely is dated. However, the food is very reasonable priced for buckhead and is served hot. If you are expecting gourmet Mexican food then you are in the wrong place. This is definitely a go-to everyday kind of place.

Graham Briggs

Google
This is my favorite local Mexican place. I try to go there at least once a week. The food is a little gringo but the atmosphere is great and the staff are very friendly.

Lizbeth Varela Calderon

Google
Overpriced payed $160 my family of 5 2 adults and 3 kids they charged everything separate I honestly think they over charged us because we were not locals. The food was not great could have ate better at McDonald’s. Will not come back.

Aarthi A

Google
You can actually taste that their food is fresh! The complimentary nachos were also fresh and hot! Such lovely service. We were served by this person called Roman and he took care of us like we were his family.

Yelp
The queso is to die for! I got the chicken enchiladas and they were delicious. The servers were very friendly and very efficient. I never ran out of chips ever. Love the vibe in there very relaxed and colorful.

Yelp
I'd say good portion sizes, especially on the tacos. Price point was decent. Food was okay, but nothing outstanding. The food came out fast and the service was pretty friendly. Not much to say, other than it was okay. I will say I didn't care much for the salsa they bring to your table with the free chips, and that's usually not a great sign. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here considering there are an okay amount of decent Mexican places in Atlanta. But if I was already at that shopping plaza for something else and had a sudden craving for Mexican, it's an okay choice.

Yelp
The only thing good here is the help. They are efficient in seating you, serving, and getting you the check. I went there tonight as it appeared as someones recommendation for the best chili rellenos in Atlanta. Nothing could be further from the truth. I had been here about 22 years ago and should have trusted my gut feeling, but good chili rellenos are hard to find so I thought maybe something changed in all this time. NOPE. This is basically a feedery for young rich white kids. That said you know your not going to get anything with any real kick to it. Just give them bland food with little heat and they are happy. They do what some other restaurants do and call it a chili relleno. They take some ground beef, cheese, a bit of dough, and a few bits or strips of a chili but never a whole chili and just heat it up so it all melts together. An educated diner would look in the goop for an actual green chili in there! But nobody like that eats here so why worry. And I read a review from an uneducated diner and made the mistake of going to see if it was really true. The help is Latino but I didnt see any Latino in there eating. OH NO! That should tell you all you need to know. I have lived in Atlanta 28 years and it has never had good Mexican food other than a rare place pop up every now and then. Best to leave your Mexican cravings to when you can get to a border state or Mexico itself.

Yelp
Our go to place to eat when we are in Atlanta since 2001. Excellent food served quickly by a very friendly upbeat staff! Comfortable booths and tables with a cute decor! Try it! My favorite time to go is when it opens for dinner! Families arrive with their young children! Such a happy place!

Yelp
. I will not visit this place ever again. I had the misfortune of dining at this so-called Mexican restaurant, and let me tell you, it was a total rip-off. Not only were the menu prices cheap bit over charged at checkout. The food was nothing to write home about. I felt like I was paying for the ambiance rather than the actual meal. Save your money and go somewhere else unless you enjoy being swindled for subpar tacos.

Yelp
I ordered a combo to try 3 items. They all tasted the same, bland, no punch at all. Could not tell the difference. Wife had taste less chicken soup. 2 adults and 2 kids paid $66 for the unpleasant experience.
google avatar

AtlantaNative M.

Yelp
Classic Atlanta. Can't beat this place for authentic Mexican food that is delicious , high quality and of a good value.

Yelp
This is legit, filling, tasty Tex Mex. In an unassuming strip mall in Buckhead, Jalisco is small but mighty when it comes to portions and flavors. I was seated immediately and given the menu as well as complimentary chips & salsa. I opted for a combo plate with a tostada, tamal and chili relleno! The dish came our fast, hot, and tasty. This is decent Tex Mex! Is it the best Mexican food I've ever tasted, no. Will I be back when I am craving Tex Mex? Absolutely!

Yelp
Great family restaurant, but if you're idea of Mexican food is margaritas plus food on the side to soak up the tequila, it's not the restaurant you're looking for.

Mari M.

Yelp
Let me start of saying customer service was amazing! They are very kind and all but ...food just isn't all that .

Yoshi Z.

Yelp
This restaurant is excellent, have been eating here all my life everything the service, the food the atmosphere is top notch 10/10

Mary K.

Yelp
Food is so good. Pleasant atmosphere service are good brushes are great. Love this place.

Yelp
Nice people Hard working Good food Good service been going here since I was 12 or what ever I'm 42 now they don't have issues with service dog's communication at times can be hard if you don't know translating things but so friendly I can't communicate at times but they are a wonderful food place

Gracen C.

Yelp
THE WORST Mexican food I have ever had in my entire life. To start, they don't serve margaritas?? The decor was just dirty and disgusting, looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The cheese dip was cold and had no spice despite "jalapeños". I ordered chicken street tacos, the chicken was burnt tasting and dry, the onions and cilantro tasted like they had been sitting out all day. The salsa tasted old. The ONLY good thing was a side of sliced avocado. Don't know how that could go wrong. The chips are only free for the first basket which I've never heard of being done. Staff was kinda meh but I was there within an hour of closing so I wouldn't expect much. Don't waste your money there's so many good Mexican places in Atlanta

Darren W.

Yelp
Food is terrible! Pricing is terrible. People and service are nice though. Ambiance is decent.
google avatar

Ron F.

Yelp
Decent place with good old Mexican food. I had the fajitas, which were ok. I would recommend a special or burrito. Only beer (and maybe wine), so don't expect margaritas

Yelp
I've been eating here for years and I am a consistent customer going at least a couple times a month if not more. Today I took my registered service animal and got a hard time from the manager who also knows me very well. We sat down and after about 10 minutes of nobody waiting on us, we got up and left. I was basically shunned for bringing my service animal in their establishment. I told the manager I would never go back. I'm horrified and embarrassed.

Ryan R.

Yelp
The food was decent. The service was exceptional. Baskin Robbins next door was a bonus!

Shelley S.

Yelp
Being going here for years! Prices have risen significantly since pandemic. Still love the chicken soup and cheese dip!

C S.

Yelp
I like Jalisco's and have been going for years, but they recently hiked their prices WAY up. Each meal, per person, will run you $20-30 now. Not including tip.

Amy P.

Yelp
I have loved Jalisco's for over 40 years. As you will see from the customer plaques by the booths, the white cheese dip is a highlight. Great family atmosphere and very convenient for shops and other errands in the area.

Yelp
Such a good Mexican restaurant. Love the nachos and chicken soup. The tacos are great. The service is amazing everyone has worked there forever.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. The staff are so friendly and nice, and the food is great! They have some of the best salsa I have had! The queso and guacamole are very good as well.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from the outside...this was my first time here my friend recommended this spot...so we pulled an was seated right away...the waiter came less than 5 mins an asked as were we ready to order an also brung out the salsa and chips asap...we placed our order an our food came out in about 10 mins...excellent customer service an the food was delicious...I will definitely be back again...

Yelp
Awesome little Mexican Restaurant. Always crowded. Great staff. Best salsa in the city. Always get queso with jalapeño, guacamole, and Bean Supreme burrito and lots of salsa. Worth the wait. And how many restaurants get a 100 on their health inspection....
google avatar

Alessandra V.

Yelp
jaliscos is a buckhead classic. must order queso when you come. the staff has all been here for as long as i can remember they are all so welcoming. the chips and salsa are always so fresh. highly recommend their pink lemonade. we got the #8 and a taco salad. both were amazing!!

Yelp
No joke. I've loved Jalisco's since I was the Atlanta Boys Choir circa 1984. A few years ago we drove from West Virginia to New Orleans on vacation and Atlanta was our midway stop for the night. My mother bet me that it couldn't possibly still be opened, she was wrong, it was! And it was just as good as when I was four. I'm currently sitting on a flight from New Orleans to Atlanta. I have a three hour layover before my flight to Pittsburgh. I just text my mom. She says, "under no circumstance" am I to screw around. Guess I have an hour and a half flight to decide whether tempting the fates is worth it. But I'm leaning toward, Fortune favors the board.

Yelp
I had the vegetarian quesadilla special (special means a side of lettuce, tomato, guacamole, and sour cream). There was a medley of fresh and decent sized veggies in the quesadilla plus the side was super fresh and crisp. That made me so happy because it's not often that a vegetarian can find a satisfying veg meal at any restaurant. I brought my siblings here twice. They thought the food is good. They had a burrito and a shrimp fajita. The service is quick, the servers are nice, and the place is clean. The food is affordable. I would recommend this place for sure! I came upon this place because I was looking for a quick bite after my hair appointment. I'm happy about this find.

Yelp
First off: absolute travesty that they have 3.5 stars. This is the greatest Mexican restaurant in the World. I love this damn place. Reasons: 1. great salsa, literally the best I've ever had (Little spicy for you weaklings) 2. The enchiladas are the bread and butter. The greatest 10/10 3. Cheese dip hits 4. Quick service 5. Jalapeños are fresh and always spicy 6. Family owned Haven't been disappointed once. Gotta get the enchiladas.

Tim N.

Yelp
Very good TexMex at reasonable prices, especially excellent for chicken dishes. Any chicken dish. I'm confident in saying that even though I've not had them all.
google avatar

Yelp
I often came here when I was growing up in Atlanta in the 1980s. I learned to love Mexican food here. I happened to be in the area today, for the first time in a long time, so I stopped in for old time's sake. The place has not changed at all, NOT ONE BIT. So I enjoyed a healthy serving of nostalgia -- but next time I'll look for someplace that has upped its game beyond the Speedy Gonzalez lunch special from 1987.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican restaurant! This place is down the street from my house and I always drive past it and decided to give it a try today. Doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled! The customer service and food is anything but ordinary. My husband and I were seated right away and the service was great. We ordered the queso with jalapeños which was an amazing appetizer, just the right amount of spice without being overly spicy. We both ordered the combination dinners which was plenty of food and super delicious. Definitely will be returning!

Yelp
This place was voted best Mexican by the Atlanta magazine this year and I can see why! The salsa and the enchilada sauce is out of this world! The salsa is fresh and tasty with a fantastic kick. The enchiladas are perfectly saturated with their red sauce and melted cheese. However, my hard taco was just okay (nothing to write about). * they do have a lunch menu with good portions

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
Very upset!!!! Who would of thought false advertising, Beware! I was charged $42 for 6 soft tacos, Mexican stew and Mexican Hamburger. I called to say I was overcharged based upon the menu listed. I was told they go by the menu in the store but those prices aren't listed correctly here. I said they should honor whats listed because I ordered based upon what I saw. They wouldn't do it and took my money. The stew was good but everything else, I could of done without. Disappointed and won't be back.

Yelp
A really nice neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Authentic Tex-Mex. I didn't try the margaritas, but the staff seemed friendly and helpful. The crowd here is very interesting on a weekend. Lots of middle-aged to older Buckhead folks. Lawyers, doctors, etc. and their families. Very laid back vibe, though.

Daniel H.

Yelp
The service and food was great. When I went to add a tip to my bill using my credit card the waiter/waitress asked me not to tip. I asked him/her why not and he/she replied that management keeps all credit/debit card tips. I could not believe that. I tipped in cash and paid with my card. If this is in fact true, the management steals from its employees.

Yelp
I can't believe this place doesn't have five stars. It is my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of ATL. The prices are unbeatable and the service is great. Love this place

Blue C.

Yelp
This place is not good at all. It feels very dirty, the tables are squeezed in there so everyone is basically sitting on top of each other. My server was horrible; checked on us maybe 3 times the whole meal. We ordered nachos and tacos. The nachos had a pool of liquid sitting at the bottom (it wasn't cheese dip). They don't serve margaritas which sucks. I will definitely not be returning. I have no idea how they're still in business. Stay away. Ew.

Yelp
I love Jalisco, where I learned to appreciate Mexican American cuisine. Combination plate #13 is my standard order. And I love being able to have lunch, or evening dinner, with familiar folks. Recommended!
google avatar

Mina L.

Yelp
I got the Mexican Stew from Jalisco and it was so good!!! The meat and potatoes really hit the spot. The beans were probably my favorite. I would come back to place, delicious food for a great price.
google avatar

Barron H.

Yelp
What's not to love about this special spot. Great people, great food, no problems. I've been dining here for nearly 20 years and I'm not going to stop. Yes, they don't serve margaritas but that does not deserve this business to receive a 1-star review. Y'all check yourself!

Yelp
My husband and I frequented Jalisco's regularly when we lived in Atlanta. Why? Their food is amaze-balls. I would go so far as to say it's addictive. They have about the best salsa I've ever met. My husband saw me writing this review and he is in complete agreement. He also advised me to write, "They have the best enchiladas in the world!" Yes. They. Do. I'd even slpurge and get their flan as everyone knows that the world's problems are cured with a good piece of flan. I only wish that the piece was bigger! And did anyone say, "White Cheese Dip!" Heaven right here on earth! Seriously, I would take a bath in it and wear the smell as a perfume! It's also nice to have very fast, efficient, pleasant service for any and every waiter/ waitress no matter who you get. That's tough to find in the dining business. AND, the food is consistently amazing. No surprises. I never had to worry about getting a bad taco or batch of nachos and salsa. A few downsides for me - it can get crowded and the space is pretty tiny. But people will flock to a good thing, so it's totally worth the wait. It's also pretty family friendly which not having kids, I can tolerate only b/c I'm about to indulge in Mexican yumminess. And actually, it makes for some pretty entertaining exchanges with kids running around like crazy maniacs - probably hyped up on food and ice cream (the shop is next door.) Even though we live in LA, I know once this COVID is over with, we'll be back for some nice Jalisco's lovin'!

Yelp
Food was amazing, great customer service! As far as service, one of the best restaurants in Atlanta.

Yelp
This was a cool spot we ventured to. It's close to my friend's place in buckhead and it's close to a pokemon gym so that was a plus in my book. Yeah I went there... we were battling during our meal... We didn't have to wait long on a Thursday evening and only reason we did wait was because we wanted to sit at a booth. Our server came and got our drink order and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu, which I needed... because the menu is simple but I could not find anything I wanted to eat. Everything was beef, chicken, chicken, and beef... and there were notes that said you could substitute for beans or cheese. But I tend to look for at least a vegetarian section on a menu but there wasn't one. My friend pointed out the quesadilla especial which I could get vegetables in and not just eat an all cheese quesadilla... because me eating all cheese is not a great idea. I also got a side of beans, instead of rice... the server let me know the rice wasn't vegetarian friendly. When our food arrived, I realized I didn't need the side of beans because my quesadilla was packed full of vegetables... Probably the most vegetables I'd eaten all week... The vegetables were cooked well but it was impossible to pick up so I had to attack it with my fork, hands, and tortilla chips, but it was good nonetheless. The salsa they put down on the table when you come in was spicy as hell to me... I think I was on the verge of tears with burning lips... and my friend said I was a wimp lol... It was good but I threw in the towel on it. Overall it was a good experience. The server kept mixing up our drinks sprite/diet coke they look alike right right.... no... but it was funny he mixed them up. The hostess was nice, service was nice. Food was good and my friend enjoyed her chicken chimichanga. With plenty of parking in the peachtree battle shopping center, I can't find a reason not to come back. So next time we're out and about in Buckhead we'll probably stop by for some food and some pokemon battles!!

Yelp
Went here for the first time for my husband's birthday, and my food was amazing. Great little spot for some classic Mexican food.

Todd G.

Yelp
We love the crazy rice! Always open, always friendly, and the food is always good. Best Mexican food in town.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican restaurant on the planet. I have been coming my whole life. I suggest getting cheese dip with jalapeños and the incredible homemade salsa. I get the taco salad most every time.

Yelp
If you're looking for some emergency guacamole and/or tacos, sure, this place will work out. The guac is spicy and delicious. Not the texture I'm used to though. it was really really mixed and creamy instead of the fresher chunkier stuff most places serve up. The tacos were pretty standard except that they served them with flour tortillas. I'm a corn tortilla lover and didn't expect them to default to flour so I didn't think to ask. Anyway, there were ok. The service is what throws me off. When I walked in, I didn't see a sign to wait to be seated or seat yourself so I waited while some co-workers were talking. Once I found a pause, I asked if it was "seat yourself" and they nodded. After seating, a guy quickly walked up and asked if I knew what I wanted. Menus were already on the table. I ordered a drink and a quick lunch (tacos, enchilada). He seemed really rushed and bothered by me being there. Nothing to write home about. Won't be back. I wouldn't want to bother them again. Lol.

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
I've only been here once, but I was so impressed that I had to write a review. Since we moved to Buckhead in August, we've been on the hunt for a good basic Mexican restaurant. My search is over, and this restaurant surpassed my expectations. This was the best salsa I've had at a restaurant. It was perfectly spicy unlike most other places. No margaritas, but the cheap beer makes up for it.

Yelp
The original Mexican restaurant in Atlanta was El Toro's. They are gone now but the people at Jalisco's are from the same family. The recipes are the same. The food is the same. This is a good traditional Mexican restaurant. We enjoy it every time we visit.
