11 Best Family Camping Spots Around the U.S.

"A modern, well-maintained section of riverfront campsites known for generous spacing and a quieter, low-maintenance camping experience; it’s a practical base for exploring nearby Colorado National Monument’s sandstone canyons and for family outings to Fruita’s Dinosaur Journey Museum, where kids can see a paleontology lab, try an earthquake simulator, and dig for real bones at a nearby quarry." - Alex Schechter Alex Schechter Alex Schechter is a Los Angeles-based journalist who covers travel, food, and dining. It's visually pretty here despite being right in town. Beware, there is a train that runs very close! It sounds like it's running thru camp and it does run over night. I think that was the biggest draw back. There are 2 lakes. We paddleboarded on one of them a few times and it was not crowded. We weren't here on a weekend tho. The sites are nice and have full hookup. There are people maintaining the park regularly. We saw a guy walking around the lake picking up trash. The town is close so you can get anything you need. The cell service here is excellent. Despite people coming and going it's fairly quiet, except for time loud train and some road noise. The view of time Monument from the lake is beautiful. We did see some people fishing.

This is a great location. The scenery is great, the campground is great.the campground sites are level with water and electric, fire pit, converted picknic table. One of the better campground we have experienced. Very nice bath house and laundry too. There is an entry fee to the park in addition to your camping fees. Staff were top notch. We would definitely visit here again if we are in the area.

Fabulous campground! Spots right next to each other but they're staggered well so you don't feel like others are in your space. Clean bathrooms with running water and showers! Paved road for bikes and boards. Quaint walking path next to the river. Beautiful views. Within a 20 minute drive to Palisade City for Walmart and plenty food selections.

James M. Robb Colorado River State Park is one of our favorite local spots, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. I especially love taking my daughter there for a relaxing day of fishing. The park offers easy access to the Colorado River, and there are two wonderfully stocked ponds that are perfect for young anglers and seasoned ones alike. Whether we’re casting from the bank or enjoying a quiet moment watching the water, it’s always a peaceful experience. One thing that stands out about James M. Robb is how well it’s maintained. For a state park, the bathrooms are surprisingly decent—clean, stocked, and far better than what you'd expect from similar locations. It’s always a relief knowing we have access to decent facilities when spending the day outside with kids. There are plenty of access points to the river, which makes exploring the shoreline easy and enjoyable. Whether you're fishing, kayaking, or just looking for a scenic walk, the park has something for everyone. The surrounding trails are great for a short hike or a casual stroll, and the views of the mesas and water are stunning any time of day. Overall, James M. Robb State Park is a gem on the Western Slope. It’s become a special place for me and my daughter, where we can make memories, catch fish, and enjoy the natural beauty of Colorado. I’m grateful we have it so close to home.

Nice little park and grounds. Very dry grounds. However, it has several ponds, which I guess you can fish a few of them. I have no idea what you can catch or even if they are safe to eat. One po d looks like it has red already in it. I'd suggest you just keep away from that one totally. Staff are really nice! Have no idea why they black off the entrance where people who have already registered and have a parks pass should be able to just drive into their spot after they have done so. But it is blacked and you have to wait in line to get back to your camp while the staff at the window, answers all the questions and do any paperwork, etc, that the 4 cars, RV's, and/or trucks ahead of you. I appreciate they provide the good customer service, but it seems idiotic to make the already registered and set up patrons wait.

We are having a wonderful stay here, in fact we booked it for 2 more nights some of the best sleep I have ever had and there is a train that comes by you don't even notice it, So relaxing and close to a lot of cool stuff to check out near here. I just want to point out you can stuff delivered from Walmart in case you get here and don't want to leave, it is kinda a pain and you should tip well cash tip I mean but it can happen I did it!

Good place to spend the night if you have a long trip. The hwy noise can be heard inside the RV, but not enough to be too bothersome. The showerhead and water temp were perfect! The bathrooms are a bit grungy but that's what I expect when camping. The water is what is important.
