11 Best Family Camping Spots Around the U.S.

"A modern, well-maintained section of riverfront campsites known for generous spacing and a quieter, low-maintenance camping experience; it’s a practical base for exploring nearby Colorado National Monument’s sandstone canyons and for family outings to Fruita’s Dinosaur Journey Museum, where kids can see a paleontology lab, try an earthquake simulator, and dig for real bones at a nearby quarry." - Alex Schechter Alex Schechter Alex Schechter is a Los Angeles-based journalist who covers travel, food, and dining. Google
We stopped for a night on our way from Denver to Utah. Close to highway, easy pull through spots. No water on campsite in December, but drinking water available at dump station. Nice playground.

Google
It's visually pretty here despite being right in town. Beware, there is a train that runs very close! It sounds like it's running thru camp and it does run over night. I think that was the biggest draw back. There are 2 lakes. We paddleboarded on one of them a few times and it was not crowded. We weren't here on a weekend tho. The sites are nice and have full hookup. There are people maintaining the park regularly. We saw a guy walking around the lake picking up trash. The town is close so you can get anything you need. The cell service here is excellent. Despite people coming and going it's fairly quiet, except for time loud train and some road noise. The view of time Monument from the lake is beautiful. We did see some people fishing.

We’ve spent 2025 visiting all 48 lower states in our 5th wheel. Colorado is state 47 of 48 and the campsites and amenities at James Robb State Park are probably the best we’ve seen. Beautiful well maintained and spaced sites on the Colorado River near the Colorado National Monument and Grand Junction Colorado. Highly recommended (November 2025).

We loved it! Super clean and easy access tot he river. The playground was great while we got ready to paddle board on the lakes and then rode our bikes around. Great area

Google
Fabulous campground! Spots right next to each other but they're staggered well so you don't feel like others are in your space. Clean bathrooms with running water and showers! Paved road for bikes and boards. Quaint walking path next to the river. Beautiful views. Within a 20 minute drive to Palisade City for Walmart and plenty food selections.

Google
Nice little park and grounds. Very dry grounds. However, it has several ponds, which I guess you can fish a few of them. I have no idea what you can catch or even if they are safe to eat. One po d looks like it has red already in it. I'd suggest you just keep away from that one totally. Staff are really nice! Have no idea why they black off the entrance where people who have already registered and have a parks pass should be able to just drive into their spot after they have done so. But it is blacked and you have to wait in line to get back to your camp while the staff at the window, answers all the questions and do any paperwork, etc, that the 4 cars, RV's, and/or trucks ahead of you. I appreciate they provide the good customer service, but it seems idiotic to make the already registered and set up patrons wait.

Google
This is a great location. The scenery is great, the campground is great.the campground sites are level with water and electric, fire pit, converted picknic table. One of the better campground we have experienced. Very nice bath house and laundry too. There is an entry fee to the park in addition to your camping fees. Staff were top notch. We would definitely visit here again if we are in the area.

Google
After driving to Grand Junction from Denver with a buddy to pick up a motorcycle camper, we stayed a night at James M Robb campground. The pads are for the most part level, and bathrooms were clean. It was a nice stay!

Yelp
We've stayed here a number of times, and enjoy it greatly. It's not exactly a wilderness experience, being right in town, but it's clean, well maintained, and a short distance to any number of restaurants and other amenities. There is a laundry room, and a number of restrooms. Its proximity to the Riverfront Trail, the Colorado National Monument, and the Kokopelli Trail makes this a favorite. You'll want to make reservations.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years and I cannot believe I haven't written a review! This park is stunning. Here, you are embraced by nature and beauty. The bike/walking path meanders along the river and you'll see wildlife and beauty around every bend. For the kids there are two playgrounds and ample room to run and play to their hearts content. The Rangers that work here have always been friendly and happy to impart their wisdom.

Yelp
This is a great state park! There are playgrounds, water features, and some really nice trails.

Yelp
We were able to easily find a spot large enough for our motorhome (37ft) which was nice. If you prefer shade in the afternoon obviously stay to the west, only partial shade, D loop has full hookups, but less shade. We aren't into fishing and other outdoor activities so I recommend it for the location to Palisade. It is close so if you like going to the peach festival or wine tasting and have the ability to camp and not stay in a hotel then this is the perfect place if you prefer to save some cash. Our other reason was to visit Grand Junction for a college tour for my son and it is very convenient for that drive as well. The trees are mature so there is good shade and plenty of paths to walk. $28 plus $10 dollar booking fee. So $33 total. IF you do NOT have a CO state park pass ($70) annually, then there is an additional $7 to enter for everyone. I highly recommend getting the park pass if you use the state parks enough. We didn't have much interaction with the Park employees but what we did experience was top notch. She was able to find a great spot for us to move and stay for both nights. However, we went in late April so it was still the off season. We've been in the summer and it is FULL so book ahead, far ahead. The website sucks to see what spots you want but that isn't the park's fault. The sites closest to the river on the NE corner (A loop?) is electric only. I can't give advice on bathroom or tent sites, sorry. My son saw them so for what it is worth, they passed the teenager standards. My husband wasn't a fan. There are also open fire pits so as long as the fire ban isn't in effect then you can bring or buy wood there for about $5 a bundle I think. Don't quote me on that price. And there IS. Fire ban now so double check please!!! I don't have little kids but there isn't much for them to do like a playground or whatever kiddos like. Yes, the nature around us is awesome, but sometimes a kid just needs a swing. The major downside that bothered us was the highway traffic. I'm easily annoyed though by sounds like that so it drove me nuts. If those things don't bug you, then it's all good in the hood. I assume there are quiet hours as with most campgrounds and most people were quite polite at all hours anyway. It is in bold letters on the website so it is to be expected but didn't wake my husband. ALMOST NO IF NOT NOTHING FOR CELL OR WIFI so if you like the off the grid then this is perfect, if you have an unhealthy attachment to technology like I do, be prepared to unhook from the outside world, which is not so bad sometimes. :) Hopefully there will be more shade soon, but sadly the noise and black hole of connection will probably never change if not get worse and I know that is Mother Nature but there is a new campground in town that manages to get it and cell in Palisade sucks too. (As a mom with a son at home alone that is a concern for anyone that thinks having no cell is a pittance of a problem).

Yelp
A good place to put in if you want to ride the river for awhile. The lake however is gross. Very marshy and not great for swimming.
google avatar

Rita B.

Yelp
This is a beautiful park. The bike and walking paths are extensive and well maintained. You can walk between many lakes and see all sorts of birds. This has been an enjoyable resource for us - and our dogs. State parks allow animals, as opposed to national park rules. I think the $7 per visit is high - but it is state mandated for all state parks. We bought an Aspen Leaf pass to allow us a year's access to all parks. I think it is well worth it!

Yelp
I expect that bathrooms will be cleaned daily especially when there is only one open on the east end during the winter. I found the same dead bugs on the floor 3 days in a row. The last day the bathroom ran out of soap-a health hazard! That's just lazy not to clean the bathrooms. The people at the office were friendly and helpful.

Beth S.

Yelp
What a great campground! Ot was of the best I have ever stayed at, especially a state park. Lots of pull throughs. Connected bike trails that were awesome. Cover over picnic tables, concrete pads and nicely kept. Did not use restrooms or showers though.
google avatar

Goofee O.

Yelp
We are very disappointed with those in charge at this campground. The showers leave much to be desired, with bugs crawling up out of the drains and huge spiders in their 3 inch thick webs in the shower stalls. It takes more than just a few hours for those size webs to be formed. More like days. Which tells me that they aren't kept up on. Not everyone who stays here has a camper with a shower and we pay more for campgrounds like this so that we can use the amenities. We also have young kids who need to shower and they are scared to death to go in there. We brought this to the attention of the senior ranger when we first checked in, and seeing as how it is now day 2 and nothing has been done, it fell on deaf ears, which is frustrating.

Yelp
With all the terrible yelp reviews, I didn't think this park was that bad. It had clean restrooms and showers! Officer rangers and park host were friendly, did not have any sour encounters. We stayed for one night on our way to Denver and stayed in campsite #33. $7 for day park pass and I believe it's $5 for firewood bundle. Our site was $24 for electricity and water (it was nice to have cool water instead of warm water from the spigot). Not a full hookup site. My site was very clean and well kept with a tent pad area. Comes with a canopy, which is definitely needed (no shade during the day time), picnic table and pit fire grill. Camped on 9/6/2016 and mosquitoes were out and about, come prepare with your citronella and bug spray. We didn't venture on any of the trails here but did drive out to the Colorado National Monument, less than 10 mins away. They have trails that run along the river and around a lake area. You are able to see the stars here at night and nice morning views of the canyons. It is close to shopping centers and the freeway and it was loud from the passing cars at one point but it was nothing we found too bothersome. It was more of, this must be the noise people complain about. Stay off the grass in the morning because that's when the sprinklers turn on. From what I saw, the tent only area is a walk-in area. Does not have an option for a tent only next to your car.

Yelp
I wish I would have looked at yelp before I stayed here. They should change the name to Colorado State Trailer park. The poor ratings are well deserved.

Yelp
It's a nice campground but the camp host was not the friendliest. We will skip next time. We felt rushed to leave during our stay

Yelp
The scenery is nice but it's a very small park. We were charged $8 to get in only to find there was nothing really to look at. We were in town exploring and we expected this to be a much larger park. The guard at the gate was a little awkward and didn't seem to want to be there. I spent $8 for one photo and 10 minutes of driving around because we thought "surely there is more park than this." My only hope is they are going to use the money they collect to expand the park and make it worth it..
google avatar

Tina A.

Yelp
This is a pretty small park. It is good for people who love fishing and picnicking. We stopped in hoping to see some sights but found out that it was just a small Park. We paid about $7 or $8 to get in.

Yelp
Quiet? No. Scenic? In one direction, anyway. Convenient? Hell yes! We stayed here for one night a few weeks ago, and picked it mainly so we could plug our camper in and have a little extra warmth. It provided that and a little more - super friendly staff, close proximity to downtown Fruita and the Kokopelli trailhead, and a playground for a certain child to burn off some energy after having sat in a car for 8 hours. So, while not my ideal campground because of its location to near the highway, it did the trick!

Lesa M.

Yelp
James M Robb has two campgrounds. One in Fruita and island acres closer to palisade. We stayed at the island acres camp. Driving in we were a little disappointed. The "lakes" were rather low and it looks a bit run down. BUT the canyon that it sits in is spectacular. So pretty! The sites are well spaced and the river path is great. With the train on one side and the highway on the other light sleepers may not enjoy it but it really didn't bother me. The worst part is that there is currently a farmer across the river who is using an air cannon every hour on the hour to scare away critters. My dog was not a fan. Besides that the campground really grew on us and we enjoyed being out of town a bit and loved the beautiful canyon views.

Yelp
I recently spent two days in Grand Junction on a trip from Denver through Colorado into Utah, ending in Moab, UT. My first evening in Grand Junction I decided to go down to the Corn Lake State Park just south and east of town to visit the Colorado River at sunset. My enthusiasm turned to shock when I realized that I was expected to pay $7.00 to visit the park for just an hour or so. I understand the need to charge admission to state parks, but $7.00 for just an hour. I later only paid $10.00 each for 7 days admission to two National Parks in Utah, and the Colorado National Monument near here was free. The fee basis doesn't make sense. I later found a nice riverside park in Palisades, about a 15 minute ride, that was free called Riverbend Park that was just as nice.

Yelp
This State a park is small but the sites are decent. It is close to many great trails near by for MtBikers and hikers. You can not swim here due to ecoli in the lakes but there is a nice playground for the kids. All of the positives however do not make up for the complete lack of customer service. The visitor center employees are the worst I have ever encountered. The woman at the window was rude and condescending. It is very sad that the stgate of Colorado continues to allow this woman to represent or beautiful state parks.

Yelp
We so enjoyed this lovely, clean, quiet campground. Spent four nights so we could mountain bike the incredible variety of trails in the area and we were so glad to get a hot shower and easy place to camp! Thanks for a great couple of days

J E.

Yelp
Unfriendly staff and anal about enforcing way too many rules that are not posted. They insist on knowing your plans so you don't leave a vehicle unattended for more than 24 hours eliminating the possibility of using your campsite as a home base for rafting, biking overnight, or backpacking. Horrible entrance procedure which makes you wait behind others entering park for first time. Only one lane and they don't trust those with valid passes to enter the park unhindered. Expensive to camp and no free showers.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Honestly I've stayed here in the camper for a couple nights and this park seemed great from that standpoint, however we came this time to tent camp and was poorly disappointed. When we showed up it was 100 degrees out. Thinking back I remember the Rv trips where we had shaded and sheltered picnic table covers. Tents have ZERO shade with little or no trees behind them and you have to cart your stuff from the parking lot to the tent. Beyond that I think the $16 price tag for a site like that it's way too much! Next time we'll just go back to the Monument. Prettier views, $11 for a camp site and you get to park your car 10 feet from where you're camping. Not as convenient though which is why I gave this state park a 3 star vs a 2 star.

Yelp
We reserved a pull through camping spot in the Fruita section. We were very pleased with our spot. Lots of space between spots ...so not right on top of other campers. Nice playground, bathrooms were well kept up ($1.00 for a shower), fishing very close by. $28.00 for full hook up. Had an educational night about nocturnal animals while we were there-- great presentation! I would agree with others about very cranky DOW workers though. Some enjoyed their jobs... But as a whole they hated their work.

Yelp
Tent camping area smells disgusting. Located just downstream from the pit style toilets, one doesn't need much of an imagination to know what it smells so strongly of. The tent camping is walk in, literally. There are wheelbarrows provided to accommodate this. In a quite place I would appreciate this, but next to I-70 and a railroad, it is a bit of a burden. Very noisy, very stinky. At $23/night to boot

Yelp
Two years ago, we encouraged our grandparents visiting from out of town to stay here while visiting us in Fruita. When my grandparents arrived, I met them at the entrance but the ranger at the gate insisted that I pay the daily fee, even though I only wanted to help my 80 year old grandfather set up his RV. The next day, we went early to visit my grandparents. We had to take two cars. When my wife explained that we were only visiting for an hour, the first Ranger waived her on through. when I arrived 5 minutes later, a second ranger (the same one from the day before) insisted that I pay the daily park fee again. When I questioned why my wife didn't have to pay earlier, the ranger became visibly upset, she was very rude, and couldn't give me an explanation as to why only I had to pay. I began to research this park on other websites, and found that I'm not the only one to have issues with this particular woman ranger. The park itself is not an eye-sore. It is beautiful. But I would call it a social-sore to our local community. If they want to have park policies, they need to be consistent about upholding them. And if they want to be a friendly neighbor to their community, they might need to rethink their policies. And hire friendlier Rangers. We no longer recommend this park to our family or friends. In fact lately, we've been sending them to the KOA in Grand Junction, even though it's 30 min farther away.

Scott S.

Yelp
Angry much? Just because you got stationed at the worst campground in Colorado doesn't mean you should treat campers with such disdain. I love the lights of the local gas station at night. At least I know the cost of gas while camping in the "wilderness". Do not stay here unless you have an RV...even so there is a much nicer park about 6 miles down the road. $32 a night to camp next to the highway and gas stations right of I70. This place is not outstanding. There is a ditch down the road that might be better. You have been warned...

Sherry B.

Yelp
The park itself was well located for our travels. This is our first time to stay in a Colorado park. We are from Texas and are very familiar with our state parks. Our stay in Colorado is after spending several weeks in state parks in AZ and UT. We stopped at the rv park across the street from the park entrance to get propane. While there, we unhooked our toad. When we got to the state park entrance, the woman at the visitor center informed us that we would have to pay an extra entrance fee for the car because we had detached it. She said that we could go back around and reattach and then reenter the park and not have to pay the extra fee. My husband came up during this discussion and she informed him of the RULES. I told him that this park had negative reviews because of the customer service at the entrance. The woman at the gate then said to me so you must have known the rules since you read the reviews. We were tired at this point so I just paid the difference and we went to our campsite. The campsite itself was great. I hope that the customer service was an anomaly and not indicative of Colorado state parks.
