27 Best Things to Do in Tokyo

"Though only 20 minutes by train from central Tokyo, the Nihon Minka-En Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum, located in a suburb of neighboring Kawasaki City, feels a world—and several centuries—away. The sprawling grounds are home to 25 marvelously preserved Edo-era homes relocated from all over the Japanese countryside, spanning an array of styles from farmhouses to samurai houses and includes a shrine, water mill and kabuki stage. Don’t miss the traditional indigo dyeing workshop in the middle of the park houses a small shop where you can find indigo-dyed everything, from socks and sweaters to handkerchiefs and masks." - Anna Chittenden, Melinda Joe

A found this great folk house museum by accident and even though it was a rainy day, it was a wonderful visit and an absolute highlight of my Japan trip. The outdoor museum is very well kept and there is a lot to see. Staff and volunteers are very friendly and welcoming and the whole "village" ist just beautiful. I've spent more than 2,5j exploring the museum and and had an absolute amazing lunch at their soba house restaurant, located at the middle of the museum. Food was very delicious and it was fun for me to eat sitting on the floor, authentically. If you want to see something truly authentic and less crowded, go visit this place.

A must-go for an incredible experience. We were greeted by amazing grandpa's explaining how things used to be made and how they slept like, as well as amazing and wonderful Oba-san. Really lovely all the time! We will try to come again and enjoy the time again!

Just 15 minutes walk from Mukogaoka-Yuen station, there are 23 Edo traditional houses and all are maintained properly. Spent around 5 to 6 hours here to explore all the vicinity around is recommended! If you love architecture and quantity surveying, this place is a must to visit! Staffs are very friendly too. Feel welcomed here :)

We absolutely LOVED this place, so hard to believe tourists don't know about it. We went on a Sunday and it was empty. It took us 3 hours to wander around without stopping for food. We stopped and sat by the fire with volunteers in one of the house. We loved stepping into those old buildings, the different architectures and the kindness of the staff. And we went direct with the Chiyoda Line, super easy.

Really interesting visit. Lots of historical information. We were travelling with a wheelchair which was a little tricky to get around. Beautiful surroundings and peaceful. A lovely place to visit.

Lovely museum for learning about historic homes from all around Japan. There are 20 or so homes (some are under construction) from various locations and historic periods with helpful employees and signs in both Japanese and English explaining details about the homes and histories. It’s a beautiful walk with benches and plenty of toilets throughout. Please note that it’s not all level and some slopes may be especially concerning in the rain.

Totally recommended! Very rich historic value with lots of information regarding each type of home depending on the zone and historic timeline. There is also a soba restaurant with good price and very nice ambient. A must visit place. Update: Went for a second time in March and there are more volunteers to explain each section!
