The park is lovely for a walk and relax. However, the pond near the red bridge and a huge turtle stoned was dry and seemed a bit neglected. Once you get to the koi pond, though, you can really see the beauty of the place - the koi are huge and the color are beautiful. There's also a Japanese-style house, which was closed during our visit, but the surrounding park area offers plenty of space with BBQ pits and seating, perfect for gathering or a quiet afternoon outdoors. Dogs are not allowed.

Google
I really liked even though is pretty much closed during the winter. Ponds are dry except for the one on top of the hill what is deeper. All koy are sort of stuffed there and water was very durty. Park your vehicle at Kelly Park parkway.

While waiting for our baseball game to start, we wandered over to the City of San Jose Japanese Friendship Garden to see what it was like inside. It was peaceful and has wonderful old garden features. Many of the water features are now dry but it is still very lovely. There is one pond left with coy and water plants. There is a tea room available for events that looked lovely and perfect for small gatherings. I would recommend taking a stroll through this historic garden park. I’m glad we did.

Some of the water in lakes is already dried out and only a small portion still has water. It's a small loop and only takes around 20 min to walk. There are very few people around and the park is pretty quiet. Good for a relaxing walk after visiting the zoo nearby!

Google
Still in need of major repairs, only one pond left with some of the original coy fish 🐠. 2018 San Jose city flood wiped out the pumping system for the ponds. Very few visitors when we were there.

Google
Such a gorgeous garden, it's definitely worth a visit! I was disappointed to see that most of the water features were drained, although there is an intact kou pond in the back. There's a lovely tea house that was closed up when I was there, with some bamboo around it. Very peaceful and pretty. I hope they fill the water features again one day!

Google
What a dump this place was. $6 for dried ponds, graffiti garbage cans, and caution tape. Hopefully, they'll use the money they collect for upkeep because that was truly a sad experience.

I was excited to bring my baby to celebrate her turning 10 months at a park I hear has amazing cherry blossoms. A park said to represent the friendship of the sister cities our San Jose and Okayama Japan. Well it seems the friendship needs a little attention. First of the ponds have no water except the one in the back with the coy and seemingly booty water. I love the look and peaceful decor throughout the park and house on site looks like a space for meditation or something. Highlight definitely was seeing a family of ducks and little chicks. So cute I have never seen this up close in real life and when I inched closer to get a photo the mom or dad looked at me with their eyes warning me of a parents dedication and protection and I let them be. Lowlight was that I pulled my daughter in a wagon and I would not say it is wheelchair friendly park because I dangerously had to pull her in her carriage up a hill. Thank god she was buckled in or she would have tumbled out. Parking lot on site and the pay station was broken so it was free. I did change the spot where I parked initially because there was a troublesome lady drinking a 40 in the parking lot so I moved close to a bus that was parked there and I figured he would see or deter any funny business. Overall a great day and experience and I will be back again in hopes of water in the ponds and to look at all the beautiful flowers.

Yelp
Admittedly I don't travel down to San Jose often. If anything, the times I do go down there it's for events at the SAP. So when I decided to explore a bit, a search on Maps showed me this place. I should have Google'd what was the latest deal with this because my oh my I was surprised by what I saw. The little ponds? Lakes? Whatever they were all empty. This was because there was big flood almost ten years ago. Bridges were closed. Places were blocked off. It was a little sad. BUT! I still enjoyed the garden. Greenery everywhere. It was nice to walk around. It gave shade and there was a breeze during the hot weather. Maybe one day the park will have funds to be restored! 4/5

Yelp
So much potential for this place! I came smack in the middle of a hot summer Sunday afternoon. There may have been water in creeks or ponds in the past, but not during my visit. Most paths were paved, while a few are dirt (maybe those aren't real paths)? Some benches sprinkled through out if a person wants to just sit and relax. The Japanese Friendship Garden connects to a bigger park with more trees and paved walkways, but most not shaded. Parking is $6 regardless how long you stay and there's a finicky kiosk that'll print out a ticket. Overall, I'd come again to see if there are any changes, but don't think I'll go out of my way to do so. #26/2025

Yelp
Easily a 5-star activity ... eventually (read on) The Japanese Friendship Garden in San Jose is a peaceful and well-maintained retreat tucked inside Kelley Park. Even with a few areas under repair, it still offers a calming atmosphere with beautiful landscaping, shaded benches, and serene pathways. On this visit, only the small pond was active, but it was full of koi. Parking is close-ish, maybe a 4-5 minute walk. Although there's typically a fee, the gate was open and the pay station wasn't working--possibly making it free on Saturdays, but this was my first visit so I'll leave it up to the Kelley Park experts to answer. Either way, access was easy, and the garden itself is not far from the lot. It's a pleasant spot to stroll or relax, with some shady areas that made it comfortable. It was on the warmer side during my visit. Heads up: A few paths have stepping stone bridges with gaps that could be tricky for visitors with limited mobility. Plus, access to the upper part of the Garden was a quite steep so just be mindful and find a new path. When the Tea House is open and all the ponds are fully restored, this will be a solid 5-star destination.

Yelp
Spent a peaceful afternoon roaming around the garden! It's absolutely stunning, with golden trees, a koi pond, and paths to walk around. The ponds were notably dry, but this may be because I visited in the fall. There was parking located very close to the garden, which was convenient. This was a great family spot, with lots of kids having fun exploring. If you're in the mood for beautiful architecture and nature, I would highly recommend a visit!
google avatar

Malou C.

Yelp
Quiet and peaceful. This is a beautiful park with walking paths and benches for resting. There is a small parking lot and no street parking. When we were here the ponds had been drained and some repairs were being done. Despite not having the ponds full of water it was still beautiful. Great place to visit.
google avatar

Julienne P.

Yelp
Guys!! The Kois are back and the middle pond actually have water!! We were so happy to see and egret walking around the pond catching fish to eat and just looking serene and graceful. Also, the Kois are fat and beautiful! Yes, the water is yucky and mucky but it's because their filtration system is broken and there's only 1 weak 1 left to filter water. I sure hope all the water is back in the various ponds and paths by 2026-2027! I'll be back in the spring for another visit for peach blossoms.

Yelp
My family and I came by to check out the Japanese Friendship Garden on Labor Day (9/2025) weekend. To our disappointment, the garden was under renovations, so majority of the water was drained. The red bridge was also closed off for repairs. The only water available was at the Koi pond. From previous pictures, the Japanese Friendship Garden looked like a nice serene place for a stroll, meditation and/or just to sit and collect your thoughts. This garden can easily be 4-5 stars if the renovations are ever completed and is back to what it was or better.
google avatar

Janet T.

Yelp
I came across this park while going to a Giants game. The park is nice as you can get your steps in by walking around. The only thing is there is no water that would have made the park more beautiful. Empty lake with no water makes it kind of sad. However, other than that, everything else is nice and peaceful to look at; I never knew this park existed. Nice find today while attending a Giants game across the street.
google avatar

Emi R.

Yelp
Such a perfect date spot! When you park in the parking lot you walk down the path to the left for the Japanese garden. most of it seemed like it was missing water or something but the more you walk uphill you'll see the pond with the fish! It's very nice and there are bathrooms on the way
google avatar

Yelp
This japanese garden has definitely seen better days. The diverse trees, concrete pathways, sculptures and benches hidden within the greenery are still lovely, but there are no ponds or fish to add to the peaceful environment, and the entire place is dried up as of June 2024. In 2017, the teahouse and koi pond pumps were flooded and damaged by the Coyote Creek. And though the teahouse was repaired in 2022, the rest of it has not yet been restored, a complicated and dragged out process which has resulted in the current state. It's not as pretty without the water features, and certain elements like the boarded up bridges and dry and deserted look make it hard to ignore its potential and what it was before. But luckily the plant life keeps it beautiful. I try to take it as it is and simply appreciate the unwavering appeal of this charming parklike setting, its engaging design, natural beauty, and history. Hopefully if and when they do get it fixed, it will be worth the wait. By the way, the japanese garden is free to visit, though parking costs a fee.

Yelp
This has turned into a staple of my visits to San Jose. I love the tranquil, serene, Japanese vibes that this Garden gives. The layout goes into each different sections with it's own magical feel. From the majestic redwoods, to the koi pond, to the cherry blossoms, to the bridge, each area provides a reflective quality and meditative opportunity. Great for taking pictures of flowers, plants and landscaping, the garden provides a memorable and relaxing experience. There is no fee other than the parking, but you can make a donation in the main building. And for the cost of parking, you can visit the little zoo and an old village recreation. So, it's definitely worth the price. The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is that every time that I've gone, there has been no water, except for the koi pond. I'm not sure if it's due to drought restrictions, but I can imagine how much more spectacular it would be with water flowing through all the channels and filling the lakes. Still, it's a beautiful place to come and relax, with someone special or on your own. This Japanese friendship garden will always be a part of my San Jose itinerary. Come check it out and maybe make some new friends.

Yelp
Came here around 4pm on a Saturday, made it just in time to look around and walk for a bit before the gates were closed. Cute park, easy to walk through as there's not much uphill. Would love to come back, hopefully the water sections are restored soon, I'm sure it would look even more beautiful with the waterfall etc.
google avatar

Tiarah T.

Yelp
Disappointed that there was no water. It looks like a forgotten gem. It'd be nice if they at least gave us something to feed the squirrels.
google avatar

Chabeli L.

Yelp
This Japanese garden needs to be closed down immediately. It's in complete despair and smells like dog poop, actually dog poop is all over the sidewalk. I was embarrassed with my out of town friends. The Google pictures are not recent. The ponds are empty, except for one small one, the bridge is boarded up, there aren't any gardens. It's in an abandoned state. Very sad.
google avatar

C. B.

Yelp
This place is horrendous. It is very obviously abandoned. No water in the ponds, nothing is growing. It is in an abysmal state. Do not waste your time. Someone posted a review with 4 stars 3 months ago - that has to be old photos or something, because this is not pretty and it is not maintained. Avoid.
google avatar

Lara W.

Yelp
This place has the potential to be absolutely lovely. Unfortunately, the water pumps in the ponds were damaged back in 2017 and they just can't seem to get it together to get them up and running. Lack of funding I'm sure is an issue, but you'd think the city would make a push to gather the money to make these gardens the glory they could be. Lots of critters were running around when we visited like geese and squirrels (I've never seen the dark brown/black squirrels that were all over...so cute!). It's certainly a place that holds beauty, but they really need to get it together and fix the multiple ponds and creeks.
google avatar

Jazmin T.

Yelp
It's a big Japanese garden but not very well care. Very sad to see all the ponds without water and the one smaller one very dirty full of algae that you can't even see the koi fish. Plants are not really maintained properly as a Japanese garden. But if you want a park for a stroll o nice up and down walks it's an option.
google avatar

Genn D.

Yelp
Everytime I come here I see less and less Koi fish. What's going on??? This place looks abandoned and it's such a same because you can tell there was beauty there that once existed there. It's sad to see. The pond is full of algae and clearly hasn't been maintained in who knows how long. There used to be a Koi Fish Food dispenser you could pay 25¢ to feed the fish but they removed it. That was the only good thing left and now it's gone.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
The quality of the japanese garden has gone down since the last time I visited many years ago. It's still a decent friendship garden, but they don't seem to maintain it like they used to! Water features are missing and no fish this time around which was sad. It was lovely to see all the Koi fish swimming around before. However, still a decent visit for a calm day to relax and meditate. Great place for a picnic on a sunny day. I would still come for a peaceful time, but it's just not as awesome as it used to be.
google avatar

Zuzu D.

Yelp
I had family from out of town visiting and I thought this would be a good outing. We went there and there was no water in the ponds. This was so disappointing because I remember visiting years ago and it was beautiful. City of San Jose has not maintained this place and the little area where they had some live fish smelled awful. Definitely would not recommend
google avatar

Agnes D.

Yelp
Obviously, this garden hasn't been maintained in a long time, it looks like. Couple of the ponds were dry. The only one that had koi in it was uber dirty... poor koi fish!
google avatar

Charles F.

Yelp
It was a very unfortunate visit. The grounds were in disrepair and no water at all. I really wanted to share the beauty of this park from what I remember when I was a kid.
google avatar

JB M.

Yelp
It's hard for me to figure out where to begin. The water features have been down since 2017. They have mow and blow gardeners doing the maintenance, the wood work and landscaping look terrible. Honestly the place looks pretty bad.I wrote a letter to the city back 2021. They replied that it was to be repaired by summer 2022. Now it's 2025. I don't know where all our property taxes are going, but its not here. The following is from Google AI: Friendship Garden in San Jose, California has been in a state of disrepair, including a damaged tea house and missing koi fish. Damaged tea house A flood in 2017 damaged the tea house and lower pond The tea house renovation was expected to cost $2.3 million The renovation included repairs to the banquet room, deck, and entrances Missing koi fish In May 2023, more than 50 koi fish were missing from the garden The fish were imported from Japan and valued between $25-$25,000 each The theft was one of several break-ins that included stolen tools and equipment and vandalized property Other issues The pond is often empty, and the waterfall is not working The water in the smaller pond is often green with algae The water pipes are above ground and are considered unsightly The plants are not properly pruned

Rocio G.

Yelp
Place is being remodeled and nothing to do or see this place is empty and the water features are dry. There should be a notice that this place is being remodeled. Also I just wasted 6.00 for parking
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Quick take: pretty big Japanese garden I grew up visiting this garden. Haven't been back in many, many years. The big ponds are currently completely drained. All of the koi fish are being kept in a small upper pond. Not sure how long it will be before all the koi are released back into the large ponds. Decided to stop by since I was in the area. This park still looks big as an adult. I've visited many Japanese Friendship Gardens and this one is larger in scale. A lot of areas are caution taped or boarded off. I'll try visited I the summer to see if everything will be restored. The park and pay station wasn't working properly either. No instructions or contact phone number posted to report issues.
google avatar

Yelp
We were in San Jose for the weekend, and we decided as a family to check this out. The place has parking, lotsa greenery, and photo ops. It's nice for taking a selfie and has areas for picnic. My problem is that some of the areas that should have water no longer have water. If one Googles some pics, the red bridge is still standing, but there is no more water underneath. It would be nice to revamp this place and take care of it. Do I recommend it? Yes, it is great for walking.
google avatar

Sonya E.

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekday afternoon for a walk. I have to say it's been years since I've been to this garden -- I honestly forgot how peaceful and serene it is. Sadly, much of the water in the man made ponds have dried up. I'm going to say it's not because of the drought but rather a renovation taking place (it seemed construction was underway). The visit was short -- maybe 20 minutes tops but it was a refreshing way to get some fresh air during the chaotic start to my year. Koi fishes are still there so bring quarters if you want to feed them -- they will appreciate it! Also, parking is a flat rate of $6 which you will pay at the kiosk upon arrival into the private lot.
google avatar

Linh D.

Yelp
As someone who has seen what this garden used to look like back then, it saddens me to see just how neglected and run-down the place has become. The Japanese Friendship Garden used to be a very nice place to walk around and take pictures. Plenty of people took prom pictures here back when I was in high school. That all changed with the storms and flood damages in 2017. I have been here twice since then. I visited this place once in 2018, and I expected the place to be run-down as the damages were fairly recent. However, 5 years later in 2023, nothing has changed since then although they claim that restoration is "in progress". The ponds are completely dried up with the exception of one in the back where they have congregated the koi fish. Even so, this water is noticeably dirty as the surface is covered in pond scum. The moon bridge which used to be a popular place to take pictures on has been blocked off. There is geese poop everywhere. There are so many caution tapes and blockades that take you out of the experience. It's just not what you expect when you hear "Japanese garden". You also have to pay $6 for parking which kinda sucks if this is what you're coming here for. We made the most of it though by walking through Kelley Park as well. There is a sort of poetic beauty in the abandonment of the garden. Not all friendships last, but it's nice to take a nice stroll down memory lane to reminisce and remember what was. There are some pretty flowers during spring, but the garden as a whole still needs more love and care. Every google search lists the Japanese Friendship Garden as one of the top places to visit in San Jose, but the advertisement for the beauty it once was is misleading to those who don't know. It's a sad garden, and I hope they end up reviving it to its former glory someday.

Bing W.

Yelp
Koi ponds were super dirty, there's barely any water, the main tea house wasn't open, and the entire thing was generally run down
google avatar

Ngan N.

Yelp
After the flood years ago, they have cleared out the fish to a smaller pond. The pond was cleaner a year ago. I don't know why it's so dirty now. Poor fish. I wish they have restored the lake and put the koi fish back in. Other than that, I love Japanese Friendship Garden. It is beautiful and pretty "Japanese". It has many plants and trees with the landscape design that makes me feel like I'm in Japan. It's usually quiet and relaxing. You can buy food from the koi food stand and feed the fish too. Since Covid, the house inside Japanese garden hasn't opened again either. It would be even better if they open it up and have tea ceremonies so we can experience that right in San Jose. It's part of Kelley park but maybe it has a separate funding so they put more work into garden. It's very well maintained - way better than Kelley park.
google avatar

Darren E.

Yelp
This garden should be closed permanently until it can be fixed. It's had no koi fish or water since 2017 and the park police close it before the 4 PM closing time...the current Yelp hours of 7 PM aren't correct. The story is much bleaker however, based on my recent visit. FEMA was supposed to replace pumps but won't and there appears to be no project management for the recovery effort. Nothing's been fixed since 2017 and the ponds now have damage to the concrete. The bridge is apparently destroyed and so really nothing to make this a Japanese garden at all. The teahouse area near it looks like it's been closed since before the pandemic and so there's no purpose or reason to visit here. When I last visited several years ago, it was better and at least functionally complete. It was too busy with people taking prom and wedding photos (without permission, of course and no police anywhere) to enjoy or meditate and the fish were sick. Now, the cops run you out at 3:45 PM by driving around the garden in SUVs using loudspeakers begging you to leave. It's clear there's no purpose for this area to be open or exist at this point...with a $10 fee to park, it's not even worth seeing if you're visiting the zoo next door. This is a fine example of how nonexistent or terrible management doom something forever when the slightest challenge happens. It makes you wonder how this garden existed at all until the 2017 flood. Whilst deserving of 1-star, because it did have function and purpose in the past, I'll award 2 stars. If I could award a fractional score, it'd be 1.5.

Yelp
Gayle and I recently visited the Japanese Friendship Garden with her Son and his Wife. We spent our most of our time walking and talking, while various life events were happening as we passed by. There's lots of room, pretty greenery, calm surroundings, and a great place to hang out and watch the Koi fish swim by.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I don't know if I would say this is worth the money...but it's interesting to see for free as a SF resident. The garden here is really tiny compared to other Japanese tea gardens (San Diego, Seattle, Portland). And it also kinda bothers me that the health of the koi fish is subpar. I thought it was strange that a bunch of koi fish were huddled together not really moving. At other ponds, they're usually moving around very gracefully. But they were almost lifeless floating there....upon a quick google search...."Over crowding, a lack of oxygen, over-feeding and poor nutrition, are stress factors that may lead fish to huddle together at the bottom of the pond". Yikes. These poor fish are not being taken care of well. Makes me sad that such beautiful creatures are not being taken care of that well.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were super excited to visit this Japanese Friendship Garden since we were in the area and looking for something relaxing to do outdoors. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed by nearly everything we saw. 1. Parking costs $6 which I can understand if the garden itself is actually maintained and nice (which it wasn't). 2. There was a ton of construction going on everywhere, both within the garden and in the area surrounding the garden. As a result, we ran into several dead ends when we were exploring. 3. Only one of the ponds inside the Japanese garden was working whereas the other two were completely dry. And on top of that, the one pond that was working had a few tents set up so the view wasn't great. 4. There was a really cute little red bridge that I wanted to get photos at but of course it was closed... Overall not a great experience at all, and we likely won't be coming back in the future. If you do visit, be prepared to have low expectations so you aren't disappointed.
google avatar

Matthew W.

Yelp
Well, right now there's no water, and the water is the centerpiece of the thing. The bathrooms are closed unless there's an event. And the redwood grove next door is closed off. Deeply unimpressed.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time with family at the Japanese Friendship Garden this weekend. It connects to Kelley Park and the zoo, which is all wonderful to walk through. Great place to take a walk after lunch at Vietnam Town.
google avatar

Yvette G.

Yelp
Saw an IG post about this place and decided to bring my kids. I should have definitely checked yelp before making the drive. This place was depressing and nothing like it was portrayed on the IG post. The main pond was completely empty and the koi were at a separate small pond that was extremely murky and just sad. Super let down and we left feeling bad for the condition the have the fish in. Wouldn't recommend. The hayward japanese garden is a way better option.

Halo C.

Yelp
It is sad to see the potential that this space could hold. Even sadder to see how the koi fish and ducks are living. With the lack of proper care for these animals.. it could be seen as animal abuse. This is a space meant for community. It could draw attention for lots of visitors if time and effort was placed into it. The website still advertises images of what it once was... filled with clean water and maintained. I wouldn't bother coming here. With the flood happening in 2017... there has been plenty of time in between for it to be restored. If this garden is meant to embody the relationship between San Jose and Okayama, Japan, then what does this say? The mercury news posted in 2022 that the The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declined to pay the city to repair or install new pumps, then it is up for the recreation to work on repairing it as well as the people of San Jose. After improvement, a small entrance fee could be placed to help support the potential beautiful space or even donations were used to do so. Von Rueden was quoted in the article to have said that the fish are still alive and healthy.. but these conditions do not support that statement of healthy conditions.

Erin R.

Yelp
This looks like it used to be a lovely garden but now it's quite sad. Overgrown with weeds, the ponds are empty, and the bridge is blocked off. The well was covered in caution tape. It was still a nice outdoor space to walk around but definitely lower your expectations of a traditional Japanese garden.
google avatar

Ellen B.

Yelp
Maybe I visited the place at a bad moment, but it was not a pretty place at all. Most of the pictures I have previously online must have either been taken very long ago, or have been heavily edited to make the place look brighter. Although it is nice to see the little lake. It could be an alright place for a stroll if you live nearby, but not worth driving to it as a separate destination.
google avatar

Andy N.

Yelp
My friend and I had both lived in Japan for some time and were thinking it'd be nice to check out a free Japanese garden in the area. Sadly this one did not live up to our expectations but fortunately our friendship didn't dry up as this location has seemingly. The gardens itself is beautiful and nicely laid out. There is an iconic red bridge (that is barred from access due to the pandemic), beautiful walking paths that circle to a koi pond with a bit of an eye sore, and benches that stare off into either the parking lot or a dried(?) pond. Ok, sarcasm aside (did you catch that), the garden really IS pretty, but just feels neglected especially with the lack of water in the main ponds. We spent about 20 minutes inside seeing everything but would have dedicated more time had we felt more energy from the area. I can see the potential that this garden has to really reinvigorate itself. However, I'm not sure if it's because of the pandemic, the California drought, or a mix of both that has resulted in parts of the garden being quite underwhelming. Here's to hoping it improves in the future. As of June 2021, the parking next door is again enforced but the gardens remain free to the public.

Robert G.

Yelp
Perfect for pokemon go, there's so many stops and gyms to take over or add to. Nice scenery as well.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed walking around the garden. It is so peaceful. Unfortunately due to the water shortage, the main ponds are empty of water. They still have a koi pond that is maintained.

Yelp
"Water Dried Up Due to Flood." This garden is designed around the water, so when it's not there, it's just not the same. Walking around the landscaped grounds, I was able to get an idea of how beautiful it would be, but big dry pools aren't really that inspiring. However, to be fair, they moved koi to a separate pond for viewing. That area is quite attractive, and also better for the fish. I did not see any facilities in the park, but perhaps I missed them. At the entrance to the garden, there was no information except a map of the garden. I really was curious where all the water was, but a few other visitors explained that there had been a flood last year. I did not know why a flood causes water to vanish, but I guess it's just some maintenance issue. It's a real shame, because I bet this garden is beautiful under normal circumstances. There is parking quite close by. The sign says to pay for parking but I don't think they're really charging these days. There was no charge for admission to the garden. So overall, a mixed visit. The garden is really not at its best. I will return when the water has returned.

Yelp
Regarding visit on April 2, 2022 at 4:00 PM.: Sadly, at the time of visit, the state of California was in a drought. Was I disappointed that I didn't see sparkling ponds filled with koi fish and cascading waterfalls? Of course! I am not sure if they are planning on revitalizing the area as I am not a local and traveled about an hour from the central coast California to be here. There were no onsite caretakers at the park for me to ask questions. The garden is big with plenty of little walking trails, and for those photography enthusiasts, there are plenty of photo op areas. There's lots of trees, including pink cherry blossoms that were in full bloom when we visited in the spring. There is also other plant life that appeared to be well maintained. The little trails are easy. The family walking in front of us had a baby stroller and they didn't appear to be struggling much with pushing the stroller. There is plenty of metered parking near the park. Apparently, the Happy Hollow Zoo is nearby. Therefore, you could easily make a day of it by visiting the zoo nearby and having a lovely little picnic at the Japanese Friendship Garden. There are plenty of tall trees in the park to keep you shaded from the hot sun. Please keep in mind that this park area can get hot especially in the late Spring and Summer months. Wear plenty of sunscreen, have decent walking shoes, and bring water along. Regarding the maintenance of the park, I feel like there needs to be more trash bins. I saw a disposable cup near the red bridge and although whoever left it there was a jerk, I also think that maybe putting more trash bins in certain locations, without obstructing the lovely views, might make people less inclined to litter. We didn't explore the entirety of the park because it was blazing hot, and we were unprepared. I had heels on but for next time, I am bringing extra sunscreen, proper walking shoes, and plenty of water. I am planning to make a trip to visit this park again to see if the heavy rain from this past winter has impacted the park positively. However from the reviews of recent visitors not much seems to have changed in terms of maintenance and upkeep and parking is not free.

Yelp
It's a park. That all there is to say about this place. Garden is a generous term. Feels like the city is aware of the drought conditions and managed appropriately. Costs $6 to park here prob due to nearby minor league ball park. Do yourself a favor and eat at a local Vietnamese restaurant while you're in the area.
