The Ultimate Martinique Travel Guide

"A seven-acre private botanical garden just outside the capital, featuring more than 300 plant species including bromeliads, begonias, and hibiscus, with shaded spots, fish ponds and an aerial walkway that offers sweeping views; the full walk-through takes about an hour and a half and is a peaceful immersion in the island's celebrated flora." - Kristin Braswell Kristin Braswell Kristin Braswell is a travel journalist and the founder of CrushGlobal Travel. It is an amazing garden. Entering the garden, it seems like you are in paradise. The flowers delight your eyes with their colors. The fish charm you with their undulating movement. For thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, there are suspension bridges where you can see far into the distance, the Caribbean Sea framed by towering palm trees. Huge bamboo trees line the paths in the garden. You will hear a lot of bird calls (if the chatty tourists keep quiet, which is unlikely). When leaving the garden, you could see the hummingbird. They drink the syrup specially prepared by the caretakers. It is recommended to visit it. The price is 16 euros but you can leave 1-2 euros extra for the garden.

The Jardin de Balata is a truly stunning botanical garden, beautifully designed and wonderfully located in the lush hills of Martinique. The variety of tropical plants and flowers is impressive, and every path offers a new scenic view to enjoy. For hummingbird enthusiasts, this garden is a true paradise — there are excellent opportunities to observe and photograph these magnificent birds up close. A visit to this tranquil and well-maintained garden is highly recommended for nature lovers and photographers alike.

No one tells you that you can buy combined tickets Jardin+Zoo for a better rate. Otherwise, it is a wonderful garden worthy visit, beautiful flowers and amazing landscape

One of the most beautiful and breathtaking botanical gardens I have ever visited. Spectacular views and a well-curated flora and uniquely designed landscape. Do take your time to watch the short documentary in the old house at the entrance/exit about the mastermind and self-taught botanist Jean-Philippe Thoze - his commitment is impressive. Entrance is reasonably priced with EUR 16 for adults and EUR 11 for minors (starting at 3 y). Do buy some fish food for 50 cents for your children - it will pay dividends at the three fish ponds... And the souvenir shop is a treasure troph for the unwary museum shop connaisseur - not too expensive and some unique items. A must visit on Martinique. On your way check the cathedral. We took a taxi, but regular bus service is available from Fort-de-France.

The botanical gardens are well worth the stop and be prepared to stay for over an hour. This was created by Jean-Philippe Thoze from hundreds of plants he brought back from across the world. We were in a tour group, so I am not sure what the cost would be otherwise. There was a sign that showed $16 euros for adults and 11 euros for kids (just a bit more in USD). You get an introduction through the main building that showcases some of the ladies island fashion. Right outside are hummingbird feeders. We saw a bananaquit arguing with several Purple-throated Carib. Once you get past that fun, you can walk through the garden covering hundreds of plant varieties. Take your time as there is a lot to see. The suspension bridge took about a ½ to get onto. But after that, it went pretty fast as all the ‘Instagramers’ moved on after a few photos on the bridge. It really is a beautiful view of the sea once you are in the middle. About half way through the bridge, no one was in front of me anymore - like they just disappeared. You can really get some wonderful photographs of the mountains. Outside of the views that would be in any nature magazine, look for the Koi fish in the ponds. After walking through the gardens you can get some souvenirs and ice cream to cool off. If you are feeling a bit sleepy, then get an espresso to go too.

One of the highlights of our trip to the Caribbean. This is a stunningly designed garden that is truly beautiful and tropical. Cool gangway above the plants to enjoy too. Prices were reasonable. There’s a restaurant on site and a shop for souvenirs. Video explaining the garden is ok but longwinded. Can get here by public bus which kindly the driver didn’t charge tourists for (public transport tickets are ludicrously convoluted in Martinique). We got ponchos for 2.50 USD as it poured with rain.

Jardin De Balata was a beautiful stop in Martinique. A little difficult to get to by arranging transport ourselves. We, as well as 8 others, had difficulty finding bus NC09. (Supposedly picking up at the bus terminal next to the pier) and the taxis didn’t want to take people earlier on who didn’t arrange for full island tours. Was able to take bus 25 eventually and reach here to the beautiful flowers, birds, and gardens. Has a high treetop walkway with beautiful views but can be a bit scary if you have a fear of heights.
