Weekend Finds: The Diego Rivera Murals, Southern Pastries, and Snowshoeing Paths We Loved

"On the drive back to the Twin Cities, we stopped at the family-owned Jawad Grill in Blaine for takeout. The no-frills eatery may share a roof with a gas station, laundromat, and tattoo parlor, but chef Atieh’s king-sized gyros are the stuff of legend. If this is a taste of what's to come in 2021, I'm all in."

Service: The cook/owner – not sure if he’s one or both – was friendly. He is the only one there as far as I can tell when we first arrived at about 4:30ish pm. Later I saw a teenager walking around and cleaning already cleaned tables. You put the order in and he does give you a buzzer for when the food is ready. He did forget my order of samosas but that was easily remedied when I went up to the counter and reminded him. If I didn’t remember that I ordered it, I would’ve paid for something I didn’t get. Food: There were 6 of us. 3 ordered the Philly Steak sandwich with French Fries and a drink combo. One ordered a Gyro burger combo w/ fries and drink. One ordered the #20 Kufta Shish kabob and another ordered the #24 Jawad Grill. Both of these combos did not come with a drink so we had water. And we chose rice as our side over fries or hummus. A salad was included. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty and abundance the food was. The ratio of rice to meat was a little off, there was a bit more rice than I wanted but still tasty. I wished that there was a little bit more of the roasted bell peppers and onions, I think I got one of each on my Kufta plate but sadly the onion needed a little bit more time on the grill. It’s still a little bit on the raw side. I also thought the yogurt dip was a little bland and wanted a little bit more seasoning and kick to it. The fries on the sandwich and burger plates was actually pretty good and crispy even though we know it was from frozen. The kids definitely approved of the Philly steak and burger combo plates. Big thumbs up. The samosas were a bit bland. I like that it was made fresh but the filling was basically ground meat (beef?). Overall: Small mom/pop place – Dine in or take out. Not sure if they deliver. The dining area was clean. Some tables did not have any napkins or condiments, but we just took some from the other table while there. Dining area can accommodate larger parties. The bathroom was a bit dirty. It does need a good cleaning. Lots of dust on the floor especially behind the toilet. Floor needs a good scrub as well. Be warned, if you use the toilet, the flush pressure is 0 and it will look like the bowl is about to flood. There’s two TVs on the wall. They offer catering services as well. Recommendations: I would definitely recommend this place if you’re in the Blaine area. It did exceed my expectations. Food was freshly made. And the owner/cook was friendly.

Jawad is a very clean and relaxing environment with subtle music in the background. The menu is well comprised of flavorful options. We ordered the Gyro, and grilled chicken with humus and samosa. They were delicious and portions were plenty.

A customer that has grown to be a friend, thanked me with a bag of Gyros from Jawad Grill. I was thrilled as i didn’t have a local favorite yet. Even better in person as I had the Gyro Pocket Combo. I had to use a fork as there was so much meat and filling it burst the bread!! Even the fries were so hot and coated with deliciousness. This food is amazing. I will be back again and again!

The food is delicious!! We got the gyro and cheese curds- this is going to be our new favorite spot! The restaurant is clean and inviting.

Super good, fresh made food! Generous portions! Gyros are excellent! Nice clean inside. (Sometimes the open sign is not on, but they are still open!)

Google
You get your money's worth of food here. I've now had the gyro and the falafel sandwich. Both are filling, the gyro seemed larger, but the experience was over a week apart. Just as amazing as most reviews report. Fries are good, today's weren't as crispy as the first experience, but definitely will continue to order them. I've also had the Baba Ghanoush and cheese curds. The Baba Ghanoush probably isn't for me, it was made fresh and presented amazingly well for take-out. I'm going to try the hummus soon, would recommend extra falafel for those as others have suggested. In my opinion it is worth a visit if you like Greek food. I will be back!

Google
Easily would’ve been 5 stars but the dude tried to charge me for getting a glass of water with my meal. Not sure if water is supposed to cost something or not but that’s crazy if it does!!! Also our appetizer came with the meal not before 🤷‍♂️ Edit: the employee saw my review and came out and tried to tell me I was wrong. But I am not. UNLESS either a) they charge for cups of water Or b) their menu is wrong Sandwich combo cost 15.99. Sandwich alone cost 9.99. Fries alone cost 4.99. So total 14.98, one dollar cheaper, ASSUMING cups of water are free. I always drink water only so I don’t pay for fountain drinks when I don’t have to. I don’t really care about a stinkin dollar but don’t tell me I’m wrong when I’m right 🤣🤦‍♂️ as per your reply, the explanation was heard, but was wrong and I did not feel like arguing. Misunderstandings are okay though and I’ll prob come back again, I’ll just bring my own water to avoid any confusion.

We will definitely be back! Found this place from online reviews and had no idea we had a decent gyro place in Blaine! The food is excellent - large portions and the service was kind. The place is clean with 13 tables and chairs. Order at the counter, get a buzzer, and the food is fresh ans ready to go after a little wait. Worth it! We have plenty leftover for later today or tomorrow. Gyros sandwich combo x2, Cheeseburger and fries, and falafel. I'll try the gyro plate the next time.

Yelp
Great food and price. Pretty quick too. Nice people. Love coming here for lunch after church!!!

Yelp
The chicken gyro is quite large, delicious, and meaty. Unlike other gyros I've tried, it's not dry at all. It has a light, juicy sauce that I can't quite identify--perhaps it's a combination of chicken juices and a light oil. Either way, it's quite moist. The price is around $11-12 à la carte. I wish they offered a combo deal for $14 that included fries.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after looking at their rating on Yelp while in the area and had to try it. Yes, it is located right next to a gas station, but hear me out... Very unassuming location with plenty of options for everyone. Their menu covers anything from Philly cheesesteaks and hamburgers, to gyros and rice plates. Surely you'll find something that caters to your preferences. We ordered the Kufta Shish Kabob plate to share, along with a 6pc order of falafel, and some french fries. Portions are HUGE -- 2 people can easily eat off one plate. The Kabob plate was loaded with different types of meat, grilled onion and peppers, rice, and a refreshing side salad, as well as a tzatziki-style sauce. Meats were well seasoned and tender, rice was fluffy, and veggies had a nice char to them. Believe or not, the fries were a highlight of the meal! They have a light coating that gives them the extra crisp and seasoning that makes you eat them non-stop. The falafel was delicious as well and the pita was fresh, warm, and soft. Overall, great meal, but it is self service: you order at the register, you pick up your food when ready, and you clean up after yourself.

Yelp
We happened to drive by this spot and promptly looked it up on Yelp only to notice it held such a high rating. We love finding local, hole-in-the-wall spots that are tasty and cost effective. Being attached to a gas station's strip mall made this place memorable for sure. We split the #20 Kufta Shish Kabob platter and opted for the rice. The rice itself was packed with flavor, which is always a good sign. It came with a side salad, including a vinaigrette which helped lighten the meal alongside the tzatziki. The Kufta itself was flavorful and well seasoned, ensuring the gaminess of the lamb was not noticeable. The fries were spot on - meaty and crispy, exactly what we were looking for. The falafel was hot and fresh, giving us the classic falafel we were hoping for. Overall, we're glad we stopped. I gave a four rather than a five star rating because space is a bit dated and service was minimal.

Yelp
Absolutely PACKED with meat and the sauce was the perfect compliment. Also loved the bear battered fries. Got my food out to me in less than 5 minutes. 10/10

Yelp
Hidden gem in Blaine , big menu and it shows up fast. The gyros are great! Will definitely be going bavk again and again

Rose H.

Yelp
It's an unassuming little place with oh so great food. The hamburgers & fries can't be beat. The Mediterranean food is so authentic. Gyros and salad & the yellow rice is so good. Step aside Dino's.

Julia M.

Yelp
Such good gyros! The falafel sandwich fell a bit short for being a bit underwhelming with a small amount of product. However, I've been back twice and the gyros are delish! Thanks!

Paul D.

Yelp
So good! Best gyros I have had in quite a while. Surprised to find them up here. The baba ganoush was very good as well.

Yelp
The best little Greek restaurant in Blaine, MN. It's in a little strip mall but don't let that stop you -- the food is fantastic, the people who work there are so kind, and they have fountain soda which is always a plus in my book!

Rose H.

Yelp
The food is great. Service is always quick and never too many people. We keep going back. Their fries with the hamburger are great!

Yelp
We went here and all of us were very hungry so we tried a ton! Cheese fries are outstanding!! The gyro plate comes with flavorful rice and a very fresh tasting salad dressed perfectly! The pizza puff was great as was the philly! Huge portions, we had a ton of leftovers!! The girl working the counter was nice and patient while I placed a very large order. We will definitely be back or have it delivered as they do deliver I was told.

L J.

Yelp
Food good but don't ask for a cup for water. Apparently the five cents kills the profit margin.

Yelp
Got takeout for dinner. We ordered 3 entrees: gyro sandwich, kufta kabob sandwich, and the lamb shish kabob plate. We also ordered a side of falafel, fries and had to try the baklava. All was very good and reasonably priced for the portion size. The fries traveled ok for a 10 minute drive home. Would be even better if you could have eaten at the restaurant. As far as the interior of the restaurant, it was very clean and bright. Not what I expected from the outside. I've driven by this place many times living in the area and always wondered how it was. Well, it was worth checking out and not sure why we waited.

Yelp
The only thing I've ever tried here is the Gyro and its very good and it's huge. Great service with good prices.

Jan N.

Yelp
First time trying this location and it did not disappoint. We had the falafel, chicken shawarma and lamb kabob. Absolutely fantastic!! The chicken was super flavorful, the lamb well spiced and the rice delish. We inhaled the falafel with the cucumber sauce. Reasonably priced and ready for pick up when we arrived. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Yelp
Holy Moly this place was amazing. Looking for a delivery option for something different tonight so we have this place a try. We had three Gyro sandwich's and an order of Jojos and we are all stuffed beyond full. I used the Yelp App to order which I thought was just dinner for my husband and I. Then my son showed up so I called them and asked if I could add another sandwich. They were so kind to add the sandwich for us. Amazing and so big.

Yelp
Very solid gyro and hummus! Salad was decent but not as flavorful. Generous portions. Easy to get to if you are in town for soccer.

Deanna S.

Yelp
So good, huge portions, not sure how we missed this spot for years! Bet Gyros in the area for sure
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
I don't live near here but the food is so worth the trip. If I want a gyro or some grilled meat with rice, this is where I have to go and I don't settle for less. For the quality of the food here their prices cannot be beat! I've been eating here for almost 10 years (they had a different location before) and I'm never disappointed.

Yelp
DELICIOUS!! And what's better than awesome food? Its big portions of said awesome food!! A kids burger meal, two gyro baskets, and an order of falafel fed two adults and a toddler three meals each. Even just the everyday items like a burger or chicken strips tasted better from their grill. The service is always super friendly and fast. SO glad we found this gem!

Yelp
I ordered from Jawad Grill often and have never had a bad experience. Food is always delicious! I feel like their gyros get bigger every time I order!
google avatar

Shelly C.

Yelp
Best kept secret spot in Blaine! The gyros are amazing, portions large and prices are very good. Salads are also very fresh and delicious. Fast and friendly service too. We definitely love this place!
google avatar

Juliet O.

Yelp
I have to admit, Jawad Grill was actually remarkable. The price was very reasonable - I couldn't believe it! The food selection was certainly interesting, but Lamb Shish Kabob was especially wonderful. Workers are incredibly welcoming. They're accommodating, polite and always on their game. Jawad Grill - I'll be back, i hope sooner than later.

Brian G.

Yelp
Place is fire! Gyros, kabobs and burgers are legit. I haven't had everything on the menu but those 3 things above are on point. Service is fast and the people working there are always nice.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
I tried the classic Gyro and it was delicious really large portions for what you pay. I also got fried mushrooms which were a bit soggy but I still enjoyed them.

Lala N.

Yelp
There food is so good you get sad when you finish. I work in Blaine and I am there several days a week

Yelp
We stopped here just the other day, and I can tell you whenever I stop here, I am always impressed with the food, and the great guest service as well. No matter how busy they are, they always make sure that I am comfortable ordering, without a rush and their portions always seem to be just a little bigger than most gyros. When I walk in they always seem to be there ready to take my order, and it only takes like 10 minutes to get my food. Now even though most orders seem to be take-out, it was actually kind of nice to be 6 feet apart from a few of the other dine-in patrons. Now my gyro was so big, that I had to actually finish it at home. The best part was the big slices of beef smothered with some tiziki sauce. What couldn't be more cool than having some baklava for dessert, (which I actually had first, since I couldn't really wait). Now this place would be worth another visit sometime, maybe for some fish, a burger or even a gyro plate.

Steve H.

Yelp
Although you may be tempted to drive by don't do it. You will be surprised by the many delicious selections and you get plenty of it. Wish I knew about this place sooner.

M D.

Yelp
Had takeout the other night from Jawad. In store seating was plentiful, so would have eaten there if we were aware of that. Food was very tasty and servings are large.

Chris N.

Yelp
Fantastic food! went with son after soccer game down the street. Had the falafel and some kabobs. So good! Looking forward to trying other items on menu. Lots to pick from and prices are good.

Jr. T.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Blaine! Who would have thought such a great spot like this would be tucked away in a strip mall. Check it out! I enjoyed the gyro and fries.

Julie C.

Yelp
Don't drive by like I've been doing for years! Stopped tonight and we had a gyro and Philly cheesesteak. They were both delicious! Gyro is the biggest I've seen. Staff was friendly and went above and beyond!

Jesse A.

Yelp
Jawad is a great little restaurant hidden in Blaine. Food portions are huge and flavorful. Alot of things on the menu to choose from. If you like greek food and pitas, this place wont let you down.

Creed K.

Yelp
Have been here twice. Got the gyro plate both times. Once with rice, once with fries. Tasty either way.
