DISCLAIMER: We stayed here years ago, and I'm finally getting around to writing this review now, so please keep this in mind. Also, most of what I'm about to complain about was COMPLETELY out of the hands of the people running this hotel, though the circumstances still must contribute to my overall score.
First of all, beautiful hotel--very cozy, very peaceful, with a wonderful view of the San Jacinto Mountains in the background. We came here in the dead of summer, and it was blazing just the way we like it. The room was small, but well-furnished. As for the staff, they were great! Very attentive, very cool--they did their jobs like true professionals. My only complaint about the hotel itself is the air conditioner in the room, which was very loud, but AGAIN, this was years ago, so they might've been replaced by now. We WILL stay here again, and give Avanti Hotel another shot. I would give it a FOUR STAR if my review ended here.
OK, time for the bad stuff.
We unpacked, got into our swimsuits, and went out to the pool--there were other couples swimming, and most of them were from other countries, like Canada and England. It was an awesome vibe, everybody friendly, and my wife and I were looking forward to spending the day amongst such hospitable people.
Then the Riverside Sheriff's showed up.
Not to shoot anybody, thank god, but to enjoy their vacations as well--you see, cops are people too, after all. Three couples, all of them law enforcement, all of them yoked, jacked, loud, and ready to get shit-hammered under the sun. Now, I'm going to probably get a lot of crap for these next comments (you're generalizing people, not everybody is the same, you're anti-cop, blah blah blah), but I need to keep it real: most cops, especially veteran officers, are desensitized and aloof to the general public, with an us VS them mentality--in a way, they need to be like this, dealing with the worst of humanity on a daily basis. I get it. But hear me out, because I speak from personal experience: I had childhood friends whose parents were LAPD, I dated a cop, and I have a couple buddies who are currently in law enforcement--it takes a special person to put that uniform on, and the meek do not survive.
Most cops are Type A personalities, and that's what showed up to Avanti--SIX APEX PREDATORS. The vibe in the pool instantly changed, the chatter ceasing. The cops eyed us as they went to their rooms, and ten minutes later they were all in the pool. It's not a small pool, but it suddenly felt small. They were loud, and drinking, and doing what people do on vacation--i'm not knocking them for that--but the atmosphere had definitely shifted. They were laughing, and telling stories about trannies in prison transitioning with tax payer's money, and the serine vibe pretty much went out the fucking window by that point.
The tourists from other countries were polite, and engaged in some dialog with the cops, but soon people started getting out of the pool. My wife lasted twenty minutes, then went back to the room for the rest of the evening. I'm a crime buff, so I spoke briefly with them about the crime rate in Riverside County before joining my wife--we ended up ordering a pizza and staying in.
The cops remained in the pool well into the night, and I never saw any of those friendly tourists leave their rooms again to go out by the pool, either. We shared a wall with one of the cop couples, and we heard them drunk fucking later that night, but the rattling air conditioner was loud enough to block most of it out, so kudos to noise in this one instance.
We left as soon as we woke up, and I forgot all about this weekend until Facebook memories reminded me about this trip.
Like I said, completely out of Avanti's hands.
My wife and I WILL return, and hopefully the cops won't be there.
On one hand, we were probably the safest hotel in the area that night, but all things considered, I would've gladly chosen danger instead.
