Why Lagos, Nigeria, Is the Cultural Capital We're Heading to Next

"Jazzhole is a bookstore and music shop located on Awolowo Road in the affluent Ikoyi district. It's a place to sip coffee, scan the eclectic collection of fiction and nonfiction titles, and listen to music like 'Rhythm of Love' by '70s Nigerian funk band Blo. The shop is a good spot to meet people and have deep conversations, offering a rare moment of silence in the bustling city."

If you want to visit one place on Lagos Islands it might be this one. You can spend hours browsing through CDs and books. And when you get tired, order a coffee and, of course, the carrot cake. Once you've been here, you always come back. If you're lucky, you might even catch a concert.

The Jazz Hole is truly a hidden gem in Lagos — a perfect blend of books, music, art, and culture. I spent hours exploring their eclectic collection of literature and vinyl records in a calm, vintage-inspired setting. What makes it even better is their small canteen tucked inside — serving light refreshments that perfectly complement the vibe of the place. The staff was warm and welcoming, making the entire experience feel personal and relaxed. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a creative escape in the city.

Small intimate spot with a wide range of books and records. They have a mini tea shop too. Keep an eye out for the location as it can easily be missed.

Interesting collection of records and books. However, I don't believe they have any idea of the condition or value of the records they have. They quoted me the same price for most records, regardless or their condition or if they had any value or not. Given this the prices I was quoted were largely absurd. I argued the price was too high on one record considering how obviously worn the sleeve and record itself was and they assured me It played well and was perfectly fine. I ended up buying It for the price they asked and upon playing It the record skips in a lot of places.

Spent less than 1 minute there. Rude and extremely unwelcoming staff. In the short time I spent there, I spoke to 3 members of the staff and none of them looked like they desired to be there nor interested in me being there. I decided to leave the establishment when the third staff insinuated that I wouldn't be able to afford a record I was requesting. Looks like a decent establishment tho so I'm sure I will be back and hope that by then they had rotated the rude staff out for more professional ones.

I first saw this record bar on Instagram, and I put it on my bucketlist to visit it one day..by God’s grace I found myself in Lagos sooner than I thought and was able to pop in, got myself 2 special Fela records.

If you’re driving here you had better keep an eye out for the shopfront. It’s easy to miss. Once you get past the narrow doors, a world of stuff just overwhelms your senses. Since I wanted to visit this place looking for Fela Kuti vinyl, I’ll just say I was happy I found what I was looking for but sad with the outcome of my discovery. Firstly this place is unfriendly. I looked like a fool trying to figure out what’s what and where’s where without anyone assisting me. I gave up after half an hour I approached the one girl who looked like a staff and asked for Fela Kuti records. She bore an uninterested disposition this whole time. Without a word (from someone whom I guess gets asked this a lot) she bends over and hands me a stack of them from behind the counter. I counted at least 8. Sadly they were all in Fair or Poor grade. Both for the sleeve and for the vinyl itself. Shockingly when I asked for the price it was all USD100.00 each. Not a hint of wanting to bargain either. As excited as I was I wasn’t desperate. If the grading was better I would have paid for but then when the sleeves were in 2 pieces, nah. No way. And with that disappointment, I left and this ended my little adventure in Jazzhole
