An Autumnal Road Trip Through Alsace Wine Country

"It’s on to Colmar. En-route, make a pit-stop at the Jean-Baptiste Adam winery in Ammerschwihr. The tasting room feels a touch more corporate than others in the area, but that shouldn’t stop you from buying a case of crisp Cremant, which is effectively Alsatian Champagne."

Good wine tasting where we got to kind of pick and choose which wines we wanted to taste. Our host helped us chose based on what we like and what we’d already tasted and guided us through the wines. After the tasting we had a walk around the cellar and bought some wine to take home with us.

Watch out! The guy who sold us the wine is extremely rude!!! We bought 3 boxes because we liked the wine we had at the restaurant, but we left the shop feeling insulted. First, when we asked for other recommendations beyond the one we liked, he brushed us off, saying it was “up to us to choose” and that it’s hard to recommend. Then, when we asked to try three wines — with the last one being the Clément — he suddenly turned rude and snappy, telling us we shouldn’t try Clément after a Gewürztraminer and that we should “listen to him if we don’t understand wine,” in a tone that bordered on aggressive. A truly eye-opening experience !!!!

If you are in the Colmar region, make sure you go to this premium winery in the village of Ammerschwihr. The wines are absolutely wonderful, especially the Grand Crus. Most wines are organic, which is wonderful. The staff is super friendly and they will let you taste all the wines you want. Hopefully you don’t drive and can enjoy the tasting fully. Otherwise they have spit buckets. Among my favorites, the organic dry Muscat, the gewürztraminer, Pinot gris and Riesling grand cru. If you like sweet wines, ask to try the late harvest. Wow. Make sure also you ask to see the cellar, you will see casks that are several hundreds of years old. It’s stunning. Cheers!

I recently had the opportunity to visit Jean Baptiste Adam winery in Alsace, and I must say that it was the most disappointing winery experience I’ve ever had. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that this visit would not live up to our expectations. The staff on duty seemed incredibly cold and unwelcoming. There was no warm greeting, no introduction to the winery or its offerings. Instead, we were handed a wine list without much explanation. When we inquired about the wines, the staff’s responses were brief and lacked enthusiasm. We were left to figure out the wines on our own, with minimal guidance. To make matters worse, we encountered an uncomfortable and challenging situation during our tasting. We expressed our interest in trying different wines, only to be met with resistance. The staff questioned our preferences and even went so far as to tell us that we were tasting the wines incorrectly. This lack of assistance and the confrontational attitude left us feeling uneasy throughout the process. As we sampled the wines and realized they didn’t meet our expectations, we decided to leave after trying just a few. However, our departure was not without further confrontation. The staff actually stopped us and challenged us for not making a purchase after tasting the wines. This was a stark contrast to previous winery visits where we were encouraged to explore and enjoy the experience without feeling pressured to buy. Ultimately, we felt coerced into purchasing a bottle of wine, under the guise that it was the best course of action after tasting. This kind of approach left a sour taste in our mouths, both figuratively and literally. We left Jean Baptiste Adam winery feeling disappointed, uncomfortable, and regretful of our decision to visit. In my years of exploring wineries, I have never encountered an experience quite like this. It’s unfortunate that what should have been an enjoyable and educational outing turned into a disheartening encounter. I hope that the staff at Jean Baptiste Adam can reflect on their approach and strive to create a more welcoming and customer-friendly atmosphere for future visitors.

Excellent winehouse with (free) acces to the cellar. Thomas was an excellent tasting host and presented the wines with flair and passion. Bought a few boxes of wine and I know that I will be sorry that I did not buy more!

We got to try some very tasty and special wines before we buy. Historic place and a lovely and generous tasting experience and free (as it should be when you want to buy unlike some wineries charging a set fee for tasting). Reasonable prices for the bottles too.

We had an excellent experience here, starting with a look around the cellar and learning about the wine making process and different wines. We thoroughly enjoyed the tasting. Everything we tasted was delightful. Bottle prices are affordable as well. Everyone was very friendly and of course knowledgeable about the wine.
