This is the kind of ideal local dining experience that one might hope for in Paris--superior quality ingredients, not pretentious, not overrun with tourists, not too pricey, with a relaxed and cozy environment. Located near the Oberkampf metro stop, this portion of Rue Jean Pierre Timbaud has some nice independent shops, and isn't too far from the canal.
You can get a 3 course lunch set for around 19 Euros (not including wine), and this spread will pretty much sate your appetite for the rest of the day. They had just shifted to a spring menu, and I tried their roasted chicken from the Perigord, plus potatoes gratin and a green salad. Wow, was this a substantial and delicious plate of comfort food. The complimentary bread is chewy and perfect for sopping up the chicken jus. For dessert, there was a small cup of creamy but not too sweet chocolate mousse.
A work colleague and I ended up staying here chatting for over 2 hours. We never felt hurried by the server, and the place never got too overcrowded at midday. Jeanne A, I salute you! This was definitely one of my most enjoyable meals during my stay.
