On the Grid : Jeannie's House Diner

"Opened by Jeannie Rogge in 2011, Jeannie’s is an old-school American diner that serves breakfast and lunch on a Mishawaka Avenue corner. Any time of day you walk in, you’ll see at least one or two lone diners sitting up at the bar with a newspaper, coffee, and a plate of hash browns and that's a vibe worth celebrating." - West.SB

We stopped by before our road trip, and it was a great decision. The restaurant offered comforting food in a well-maintained setting. Both the food we got, spinach omelette and countryside steak if I remember correctly, were beautifully presented—clean, cute, and delicious!

Google
This is a diner. It has the atmosphere of a diner, and it has the service you would expect from A diner. But it stopped being a decent place to eat. I have been eating there for years. Since they sold the place, the new owners raise their prices and stopped making decent food. Today was the last straw when they served me biscuits that needed to be cut with a knife to be consumed, and even then you could tell they were hard and old. Yes, I paid my bill, but I won’t pay any more bills there cause I won’t be going there and I would recommend people going other places than there. To give you an example of the customers, they have lost the parking lot used to be full Monday through Fridays between about 7 and 9 AM. Now they whole days when there’s nothing for no one there

This is a very small, or a better description would be quant place. The cooks are great along with the breakfast. It’s a great place to talk to people and just enjoy some good food with no stress.

Stopped on our way back home from my bach party. The wonderful ladies were so inviting. So much fun!!! And AMAZING food! Down home cooking at its finest! Thank you all for the hospitality! Next time we're in South Bend, we will be stopping by! 🤤

Very welcoming atmosphere. Reminded me of our home town diner. In the 60s. Food was excellent and hot. Prices are great!

Google
Jeannies is a cozy little place with phenomenal food! Hands down the best biscuits and gravy around. And their jalapeño sausage patty? To die for! Highly recommend

Loved sitting at the diner bar in this quaint, friendly restaurant. Staff were pleasantly welcoming, and they serve a great cup of coffee that stays hot and full! I appreciated my delicious homestyle breakfast.

I was in town and found this place thanks to Yelp and Google. It’s a local, family diner. It has some booths and a large counter. Service was prompt and friendly. We both ordered omelettes. Waitress offered homemade jam - strawberry rhubarb, peach or blueberry. That was so good to add to my homemade biscuit. Omelette and potatoes were also very good. Numerous coffee refills. I even bought some homemade cookies for $1 each to take with me. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came here to eat before we were going to tailgate before the Notre Dame game against NIU. Small diner with lots of bar seating and was very busy when we arrived, but it goes pretty quick and we were able to get seated fairly quickly. Staff was nice, attentive, knowledgeable and personable. Portions are decent for the price. We couldn't even eat it all, so we took it to go and they have nice specials, just ask! My husband got the Mexican skillet and the sauce had a kick to it that we didn't expect, but we enjoyed it very much. I got the typical all American breakfast that included eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage links and French toast. In addition to a side of corned beef Hash that was also delicious. It was savory, with a hint of saltiness and the hashbrowns were cooked crispy. Not far from the stadium either. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area before a game, or any game. We also enjoyed that though it was small, it wasn't really loud in there and ambiance was pleasant.

Yelp
I've had many pancakes in my life, and I can honestly say without a moments hesitation that the JEANNIE'S pancake is the greatest pancake in the world. You absolutely must try it. Not to mention friendly service, and an ambiance filled with character. Enjoy.

Yelp
Good breakfast food in a small friendly neighborhood diner. Teeny tiny place where it would best if you're an extrovert and not afraid of getting close to people you don't know as it is LITTLE! But the staff are all amazing and the coffee is delicious. I had the 3meat skillet topped with eggs...well-seasoned. My daughter had the chicken fried steak with country gravy and she CLEANED her plate! For her this was huge as she seldom eats everything on her plate... If you need a good home cooked breakfast while visiting south bend this would be a great choice

Yelp
Jeannie's makes me wish we lived nearby. We had a fabulous breakfast at this great local diner. The diner is small but the hospitality is HUGE. There are a few tables but there are plenty of counter seats. We sat at the counter and watched as our breakfasts were made to order while we chatted with the staff and other customers. Everyone here is super friendly. My husband ordered the ribeye and eggs I had the sampler (jalapeño sausage patty and homemade corned beef hash) with eggs, and my dad had and ham and cheese omelette. Each were served with made to order hash browns. We all opted for a side of grits instead of toast. The coffee was good and refills offered readily. We met a regular customer at the counter who was there with his young granddaughter who gave us advice for our trip and for our order. I also heard the the Irish football players come by for breakfast. We hope to return...

Yelp
Weather conditions in South Bend required an early start to my workday. About two hours into my morning I was more than ready for breakfast. Visited Jeanies House Diner at Mishawaka and Twyckenham. A steaming cup of coffee took the edge off my morning grumpiness. I ordered two eggs, over easy, on top of a half order of biscuits and gravy. I was seated at the bar in front of the flat top, so I had a front row seat to the morning breakfast preparations. My plate was quickly delivered. As usual, it was piping hot. I devoured it much too quickly, but my ravenous appetite would mot let me slow down. The biscuit was light and flaky. The sausage gravy was quite tasty, and the dippy eggs just tied everything together. The food was great. Service was quick and responsive. My coffee cup never was less than half full with repeated warm ups. Its was a great way to kick start my morning. I will be back soon.

Yelp
Delicious as always! The food is amazing and the homemade jam is delicious. Staff is friendly and always smiling.

Yelp
Good home cooked good. Corned beef hash was delicious. I would have liked the hash browns much more crispy though.

Yelp
Friendly smaller diner but yummy , let me start by saying their homemade corn beef hash as well as they're jalapeño sausage is delicious. Service was wonderful. Breakfast was good biscuits and gravy. Can't beat it. If you're anywhere in the area definitely stop also best coffee we had can't go wrong little mom and Pop plays but wonderful. Give him a try.

Yelp
Nostalgic Ma and Pa family diner that has some fantastic breakfast meals. I had the three egg breakfast plate with hash browns, sausage patties and grits. Everything done well and served with a friendly smile. A truly enjoyable meal for both my wife and I. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Exceptional service and good diner fare from the flattop make this a hidden jewel close to IUSB. We stopped in for a quick bite not knowing if we would even be seated at 930 on a Sunday. But...there was one table left for the two of us. Very clear they are short handed on staff and doing the best they can. We waited about 45 minutes for the food to arrive but it was fine. We weren't in a hurry and the pleasant nature of the table service made it all worthwhile. Breakfast was very generous and my stomach and wallet both left happy. Certainly would come back here if in the area.

Yelp
Went here today and had the BLT and house made chips! Small, quaint, and delicious! One long counter too seating stretches the length of the place with a booth a a two top. Support local!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a hidden jem and we got lucky and found a table. I had the country scrambler and my guest had chicken fried steak breakfast. I will definitely be back the next time I am in the area.

Yelp
Spot on service - waitress (and I think the owner) was super attentive, refilled coffee, and immediately noticed when she gave me my breakfast and it was missing something. The cook brought it to me immediately and I never even had to say a word. Filling and really great food. Everything is made right in front of you on a clean and well kept griddle. Made to order how ever you want to modify.

Yelp
It's a homey, pleasant diner with good food. The decor is random. It has a conservative politics vibe to it which is cringe but other than that it's good.

Pattie J.

Yelp
This was a perfect diner experience! The food was delicious, and we were smart enough to take the suggestion of the waitress and have the homemade strawberry/rhubarb jam with our toast. We will be back again soon!

Jeremy B.

Yelp
This is a South Bend institution just like the Golden Dome, the Grotto, and The Linebacker. The staff is amazing and the food is always excellent. It has the feel and atmosphere of a classic diner. If you're a local or is you're in town for a football game, you NEED to stop and experience a tiny slice of pure South Bend awesome.

Carrie B.

Yelp
We are from NJ which has the best diners so didn't expect much - couldn't be more wrong! This was the best place ever that blows any NJ diner away. The entire staff is super friendly and the food is fantastic. We went 2 days in a row and will be back anytime we are in South Bend.

Jimmy G.

Yelp
Back again! Staff is great very friendly. Feels like home. Food never disappoints. I suggest the biscuits and gravy

Jeff H.

Yelp
Iowa visiting and we have great diners. Sat at the bar and was not just fed great food, good service, and friendly. The team rocked it and with great music being played in the background. Anyone visiting Notre Dame and find themselves in nearby Mishawaka come her and eat.

Yelp
The best! Great breakfast place, amazing waitstaff and fun to watch the cook prep your meal.

James D.

Yelp
Just the type of breakfast place you want to stumble on to. The food is outstanding and they give you plenty of it. A half order is more than most places serve with their big order. The pride in preparation of the food is outstanding. The service is awesome! The patrons are friendly and great to talk with.

Linda G.

Yelp
Each time I am in South Bend this is a must stop for me! I love Jeannie's and all the staff... delicious home style food like your mom made and staff that feels like family. Nowadays we all need places like Jeannie's where you can go, eat, laugh and walk out feeling better than you did upon arriving because the place has such a positive vibes and serves delicious food!

Yelp
This is a small place and when we pulled up we noticed how busy they were. (Great sign) The staff was fast, friendly and courteous. We had several questions which were answered courteously. Even though they were short staffed, the food was delivered quickly! Everything was made fresh; was great and priced right. Try the cinnamon rolls, made from scratch. Delighted with this place.

Yelp
Always provides exceptional friendly service, with great food, their pancakes are perfectly delicious everytime

Yelp
Sassy, salty, and sweet. That could be describing the ambience, the food, and the service! This place is a legit down home little greasy spoon that's capably run by a couple of awesome ladies. They don't take any guff! Very much a beloved locals joint, this place feels very authentic and there's definitely care in everything they do.

Yelp
Wow. If you're a diner fan, don't miss this place. There's a few tables and booths, but the featured seating is the long counter spanning the width of the building. You never know who you'll be sitting next to, but on this Sunday morning it seems likely you'll be sitting next to a regular... judging by the greetings and friendly banter between them and the servers. Lots of fun to see. The menu has some nice specialty items. I had to have Spam and eggs, and a side of "Homemade Jalapeño Sausage." Awesome. My wife had a skillet "Full City" plus spinach and some other stuff. It was great too. A firefighter sitting next to us was tearing into a waffle topped with peaches and whipped cream. Coffee with their vanilla cream from little pitchers... it was just a great experience. Everyone -- from the wait staff to the patrons -- we're all friendly and fun. You really get the idea that this is a great neighborhood diner. One you should not miss.

Yelp
Everything you want from a breakfast place. The food is perfect diner breakfast! They cook it all on the flat-top right in front of you. The hash browns are crispy. The coffee is hot and refills are plentiful. The crowd is a mix of young and old. The chatter is ND football. Which didn't bother this wolverine fan at all given the wonderful food and friendly staff. Going forward it will be a must-stop every time I'm in SB

Yelp
If you find parking try this spot the breakfast is on point and so good. Happy we found this gem while in south bend

Kelli G.

Yelp
Excellent diner with typical diner food. The homemade jam was excellent and the staff was super nice. I look forward to coming back this way.

Yelp
In town for a hockey tourney and read the good reviews for breakfast. Glad we went! Atmosphere was welcoming. Dawn and the rest of the ladies were fantastic. Food was delish. I had the skillet with sausage and spinach. Hubs had the "Truckers" special. Boys had spam, eggs and cinnamon rolls. Daughter had the pancakes. Will definitely come back here for breaky next time we're in town!!

Delaney S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times visiting South Bend and it's a great spot. Watching all the food get cooked right in front of you is impressive to watch, and the food does not disappoint. Not a ton of seating, but I haven't had an issue getting a spot. The service is quick and the coffee is great. Great place!

Yelp
Definitely well worth the travel and the food was AMAZING will be back to eat again most definitely

Yelp
I have ate breakfast at Jeannie's several times in 2022. The food is always top notch. They are short handed on help but they do fantastic job of taking care of everyone in a friendly and polite manner. It's the best place that I have found.

Samantha P.

Yelp
Really good breakfast! Service is quick, friendly staff, and good coffee. My son loves their pancakes.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance! I love the diner feel. Food is great and totally what you expect!

Yelp
Ate here for a late breakfast today. When we got there around 11, we realized they were really busy with no tables or seats open. We almost didn't wait but did, and we were so thankful that we did as 2 people got up fairly quickly from the counter stools. We were also thankful because the food was awesome! My wife had their special of the day, the Denver Bake and I had the Denver Omelet. While I wouldn't recommend the Denver with the Bleu Cheese (get the Swiss cheese instead), our meals were great and we'd go back and visit again in a heartbeat! The service was was great and it was fun watching them cook our meals right in front of us. Just try it!

David K.

Yelp
A family friendly restaurant. Meats, tomatoes are of the highest quality. I met the Asst Fire Marshal there one morning, he gave me a 6 min education. Dawn makes the Stuffed Green Pepper soup, jum, jum.
google avatar

Eugena B.

Yelp
Great service and great food, nothing but good things to say about this place. definitely worth any trip!
google avatar

Amalia H.

Yelp
Tasty, friendly, and fast! I had a Denver omelet and bread pudding. I went with six other people; it's a VERY small space so we all sat at the bar. They got our orders right away and the food came out quickly and all at the same time. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

PablosPanda Z.

Yelp
We've been coming to Jeannie's for breakfast since we've lived in South Bend and have truly considered it a gem. I'm a big fan of all breakfast foods here and Pablo really likes the corn beef hash. When we have friends in town we bring them here and no one ever leaves disappointed! About a year ago, I signed up for the text messages (amazing deals FYI) and since then each Monday I try to get Pablo to go with me to try the sloppy joe special. Well, today we did... I don't believe a better $5 lunch exists on this planet. We will be coming in on a Wednesday for the pulled pork! Pablo's ratings: Food: 4.5 (French fries could be crispier) Environment: 5 Value: 5 Service: 4.5

Yelp
If your looking for a "corner diner", this is the place. I was in the area on some other business and walked to this place for breakfast. I could smell the aroma from about 3 blocks away. A tight counter with stools is about all there is. A few tables but not worth counting. Average prices for typical diner food. Omelettes, skillets, burgers and fries. Plan on about $10 per person unless your a light eater. Food was good, coffee was fresh, service was average. Place ran steady for the few wait staff working who also helped out a little prepping food with the cook. That leads to my 3 star rating. I waited about 10 minutes for my first cup of coffee. Then mentioned refills to get more. Attentive waitstaff would have made it a 4 star. If I'm in the area, I'd stop again. I'm full and sleepy now.
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Best Breakfast in town!! Be sure to get the house made jam! Ps I love the servers here. We always have great conversations and they keep it real and work hard!
google avatar

Kat G.

Yelp
Great food, awesome service, friendly staff. Jeannie's House is a great little diner and The Rogge Family have done an incredible job making everyone feel welcome and filling everyone's bellies!
google avatar

Byron T.

Yelp
Great hometown vibe, service and food. Close to Notre Dame University and the staff was exceptional. They're famous for corned beef hash and jalapeño sausage. A great little breakfast diner.
google avatar

Rafael R.

Yelp
Love this place, their country fried chicken is home made and it tastes delicious! Always my favorite breakfast place.
google avatar

Wes Z.

Yelp
This is a great little place. They were training a new cook today and the eggs, potatoes, and other items were still cooked well. I ordered spam & eggs for some reason (I haven't had spam in 10 years) and didn't like the spam (my tastebuds; not their fault). The home fries are sliced & cooked fresh and still have the skins on. The coffee was good as well.
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town & stumbled on this gem. Staff super friendly. I had the little skillet, hubs had the French toast. Bacon & eggs cooked to perfection, homemade blueberry jam was excellent! The onions, potatoes in the little skillet was my favorite. Any place that serves coffee in mismatched cups, has good food in my experience. Server & cook both stopped by to say hi. 50% discount for active duty military, fire & police. That alone would make me go back & support this place. Sorry no photos we were so hungry!
google avatar

Callie K.

Yelp
I'm in town visiting family so my mom and I stopped in for breakfast today. Happened to catch them in a slow period to we were able to easily find a seat. We were quickly welcomed and received our drinks fast. Service was friendly and i love that they support pet refuge were our family had adopted from. The food was all made to order. The only complaint I could give is that the bacon was kind of salty but I didn't see them salt it at all so it was the supplier and bacon is naturally a salty product anyway. The bread they serve is super good as well! I will definitely return when in the area.
