Very little happens in downtown Beaumont after the office workers leave. The city tried to change that by opening a nightlife district on Crockett Street; that was such a bust that it was a joke. No, one of the few places you can go at night in downtown is the Jefferson Theatre.
Opened in 1927, the Jefferson is a grand old dame. It's similar to other old theaters I've been to. And thankfully, it did not suffer the same fate as most of them: being torn down for an office tower with no character or - worse yet - a parking lot. It's well taken care of.
I put it at three stars because it's not used much. There are VERY occasional concerts and movies that appear here. Not enough to make the Jefferson a destination. This may be because the Beaumont-Port Arthur area has very little nightlife to begin with. With so many people moving to Texas lately, including some to the southeast corner, this may bring in people who may want to see more classic movies or nationally-ranked concerts. The Jefferson has a far better local reputation than the Ford Arena & Pavilion several miles to the southwest, so why not?
If you like old theaters, then you'll love the Jefferson Theatre. Hopefully there's an event there when you're ready to see it.
