Hotel Jen Hong Kong by Shangri-La

"How did it strike you on arrival?Hotel Jen Hong Kong is located in the gentrifying district of Shek Tong Tsui in Hong Kong Island—about three metro stops west of Central. The lobby space is cool and neutral with pops of color. Off to the right, there’s a modern bar where guests can hop on the Wi-Fi and relax with a beer or meet up with friends for afternoon tea. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Positioned as the Shangri-La’s hip younger sister, Hotel Jen attracts remote workers and urbanites who appreciate playful design and up-and-coming neighborhoods. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Starting at a snug 260 square feet, the wood-paneled rooms are tidy and contemporary. We were drawn to the convenient work station and window seat looking out on the harbor. If you prefer a larger space, upgrade to the 540-square-foot Club Suite. The extra inches mean a walk-in closet, separate living room, and a kitchenette with a microwave and full-size fridge. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The Shangri-La brand bed setup is a Simmons queen mattress, goose down duvet, fluffy pillows and 300-thread-count linens. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? We loved the convenient "One Bag Laundry" concept—an affordable set price for everything you can fit in the bag. Whatever's in the bag returns the next day washed and folded. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The standard rooms include a shower, tub and simple white vanity. In the suites, bathrooms that overlook the harbor are equipped with double vanities, a separate bathtub, and a walk-in shower. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is free as can be. Hotel Jen also provides convenient bedside charging ports and various mobile charging stations around the hotel's common spaces. Room service: Worth it?There’s a short menu for in-room dining covering Western, Malaysian and Singaporean. Just be careful to order within the relatively tight window of 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. daily. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.Definitely venture to the rooftop before your stay comes to an end—the lap pool sits parallel to Victoria Harbour on the 29th floor. On the same level, there's a 24-hour fitness center that's compact but kitted out cardio machines facing the water. Those staying in a Club room will also want to spend time in the lounge on the 28th floor, where complimentary breakfast, snacks, free laundry pressing, cocktails, and panoramic harbor views are among the amenities. For dining, there is Café Malacca, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recommended Malaysian and Singaporean restaurant that specializes in casual hawker-style dishes. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?We were pleasantly surprised by the rooftop pool and contemporary design—both made us look forward to returning at the end of each day. Bottom line: worth it, and why?A solid option for those seeking great value, Hotel Jen delivers modern interiors, harbor views, and a great location right by the MTR." - Kate Springer

Excellent hotel! Conveniently located. Close to the subway, U of HK, and many nice restaurants. The service is absolutely the first class. I left my laptop charger when I checked out. The customer service people contacted me right away and mailed it to me. All the service people are very patient and nice. Will recommend it to my colleagues and friends.

I went to Hong Kong for a business trip at Hong Kong University. The location of the hotel was perfect for this trip. The gym and pool on the 28th floor are wonderful, allowing for a short run on a treadmill and a swim in the morning while enjoying a fantastic view of the harbour. The staff at the gym and pool were extremely friendly. Breakfast was also great, offering a wide variety of choices. Staff members in all areas (cleaning, reception, breakfast, and pool) were exceptionally friendly, and the room was clean and comfortable.

This hotel is not for me. Yes, it has a good location, but, to be honest, most hotels on Hong Kong island are well located. For me, the biggest issue was the room layout. You have to walk "through" the bathroom to get to the bedroom. The shower and toilet are cubicles with glass doors and a vanity/sink area directly opposite. Basically, there is no separate bathroom. There's a sliding wooden divider, but that doesn't create a bathroom. Another gripe is the lack of storage. I kept thinking there must be more, but no, there's a single wardrobe (that's the one with the full-length mirror in the photo). Housekeeping was keen, but they would turn up when I was still in the room or just returning from breakfast. I had a club room with access to a lounge, but it looked and felt like a regular Hong Kong hotel room. I guess you pay extra for the lounge and high floor. The hotel doesn't give bottled water. There's a water filter/dispenser thing, but there are single use disposable items like cotton pads and a toothbrush. That didn't make sense. I didn't like the hotel breakfast, so I started going out for food instead. The staff are nice enough, but I really wished I'd stayed at the Courtyard Marriott, which has decent size rooms, better breakfast, and proper storage. And a bathroom.

The hotel is located nearby the metro station and other public transport stations, which was rather convenient for us to get there from the airport. The check in is rather late but the hotel offers a service to leave the luggage before it. The rooms are clean, the view is as shown on the pictures; however, the bathroom could be renovated (the shower handle did not work that well). The whole hotel is air-conditioned, so it was definitely a life saver in the heated moist Hong Kong in June. We could relax after long days of walking. We recommend going to the city centre and harbour by public transport and not on foot unless you really want to experience the authenticity of local culture.

My mother and I recently stayed at your hotel. An unexpected incident truly highlighted your team’s outstanding dedication. During our stay, my mother experienced a fall. What followed was nothing short of remarkable. ||Mr. Augustine Huang (黄沛霖), your Security Manager, acted with extraordinary professionalism and compassion. He promptly administered first aid assistance with calm expertise, ensuring my mother felt safe and supported throughout. His genuine concern and attentive care went far beyond his duty—it was clear he sincerely prioritized our well-being. This wasn’t just service; it was human kindness in action.||Beyond Mr. Huang’s heroism, every staff member we encountered radiated warmth and eagerness to help. From the front desk to housekeeping, your team’s consistent hospitality made us feel valued as guests. Their smiles and willingness to assist—even in small matters—reflected a culture of true service excellence. ||In moments of distress, a hotel’s real character shines. Yours shone brilliantly. Thank you for transforming a stressful situation into a testament to your staff’s integrity and skill. We will absolutely return and recommend your hotel without reservation!

This Hotel was recommended to us by a friend. It is centrally located with a wealth of public transport nearby. The Hotel was very comfortable and our room had a view of the harbour. The rooftop pool also has a lovely view.||The staff were friendly and helpful and dinner in the Cafe Malacca was very good.||We also had great snacks at the Bar in the lobby which is not very well patronised, however, the waitress that ran the bar was very friendly.

A lovely hotel with all the amenities one might need. It's the small things that make the difference like having cutlery in the room, super easy access to the pool etc. It didn't seem crowded at all which we really enjoyed. The harbour view from our room was fantastic and finally, Billy from the reception team went above and beyond to make what was a special occasion trip even more special. Thank you very much.

Breakfast is great, view from the 19th floor and the pool excellent but windows needed cleaning so you could see it better. Toilet setup is weird, individual stall with glass walls meant everyone in the room could hear you at the toilet. Staff were all lovely, at reception, cleaning and pool staff. Rooms are getting a little worn, wooden cupboards need refinishing. Great location of visiting HKU. Shopping mall nearby and lots on interesting local shops and restaurants/cafes. Very convenient to the HKU MTR stop, just a few steps from B2 exit.

Yelp
Nice hotel ideally located a block from the MTR subway station which makes getting around very convenient. Rooms are small with a small fridge, coffee maker and good amount of outlets which is nice. Bathroom is small and shower water pressure could be better but it was okay. Beds are comfy with nice fluffy pillows. Slept well too. There's a 7-11 very close but they along with Circle K's are everywhere. There's a McDonalds across the street. Staff have been friendly. The breakfast is very good. Actually all the Shangri-la hotels usually have good breakfasts. They have many Western and Asian items available. There are several mini marts nearby and plenty of small joints to eat. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They were quick to help me when I lost my key.

Yelp
Away from the noisy but lively Soho area, but has a great mix of local and Western culture. Love the Kennedy Town neighbour nearby, but behind the main street there was a great coffee shop and restaurant opposite a small garden. Nice to see quaintness in such a big dense city! Getting the lounge access is completely worth it, as you have happy hour wine or coffee with a fantastic view of the harbour. There's also a small pool on the roof for those wanting a reprieve from the hustle of the city. The hotel is safe and steps from the metro, and staff seem friendly overall. Restaurant on the third floor has some really good Malaysian cuisine.

Yelp
Stayed in Hotel Jen (formerly Trader's hotel, which it is still referenced as in some travel guides) this summer and had a really great time. The lobby is really nice, with helpful staff and coffee/tea at the front desk. The rooms themselves were on the smaller side, but definitely very cozy and comfortable. I believe that the rooms also come with large windows and one of those window side couches. We got a room with a harbor view and the view was absolutely awesome. Rooms were spotless and also came with a flat screen TV and free wifi. One weird thing is that our room didn't really have a bathroom - there was a bathroom stall, a shower, and a sink/counter right when you enter. There was a sliding door you could pull to separate the two, but there wasn't a real 'bathroom' that you usually see in hotel rooms. You lose a little privacy, but given the price and the quality of the room, it was definitely understandable. There is a small pool and gym at the top floor with amazing views of the harbor, a definite plus. Overall, we had an awesome time at Hotel Jen and would definitely recommend it!

Yelp
We stayed two nights at the beginning of our trip to HK. Quite pleased with everything from the suite (sliding doors turns this into a one-bedroom) with a kitchenette (full size fridge, by HK standard plus microwave and plates, glasses, utensil), huge closet, bath tub with a view, sitting area to the overall service on every floor (including the club lounge) to the exceptional selection of food at the buffet breakfast. The hotel was perfect in every way inside and outside, you had a true experience of HK life, with two supermarkets w/in 5min walking distance, fruit stores, restaurants, bakery, barber shop, short walk from the MTR station and the tram stop. This was truly a traveller's perfect oasis. If we hadn't "accidentally" booked at another place for the last part of our stay, we were planning on returning to the Jen. Nothing negative about staying here!

Yelp
I came here for Christmas. Love the set up of the Christmas tree and the atmosphere in general. However, the management here is disorganized. I checked in at the time I was supposed to, however, they haven't prepared my room. I waited for about 2 hours for my room. Probably the worst part of my trip to Hong Kong. Never again.

Yelp
In a word - almost as good as a hotel can get, just improve the breakfast. Longer version (for the brave) - this hotel was booked through my employer, so I had no idea what I'm about to get. As we arrived there we have been welcomed with a big smile and great service, we went up to our room to start unpacking and within two minutes house keeping has knocked on my door and gave me a complimentary fresh food cup to start the day - so awesome! The room is clean, and kept tidy at all times.. Even at times that I was in the room got a call from housekeeping asking me when it is possible to come in and clean. Some rooms have a bath, some have a shower and there is pretty much everything you need - from shower cap to toothbrush. Complimentary water bottles are offered and refilled daily. Big bonus - had a sea view room! If you don't have one don't worry - the gym and the pool have amazing view too! The staff are very helpful and did everything they could to help with my needs - even when I needed a taxi in the middle of the night! Wish I could stay there for a little longer.

Yelp
Stayed in hotel Jen for a conference at nearby HKU; friendly staff, comfy rooms and good breakfast buffet have made it easy to cope with the jet-lag. Another "plus" is the pool, the closeness of the blue line HKU station (exit B2) and the free coffee at reception!

Yelp
Owned by the Shang-ri la, I rolled the dice on hotwire and was pleasantly surprised. Granted if you are commuting to the Center every day like I was for a week, it's a little tricky, but the MTR is right downstairs. The location otherwise is good, with a McDonalds across the street, Starbucks, grocery store and super sweet little milkshake/street food place near by. I checked in after work one day, and they didn't have any queen beds available, only twins, which was not happening, since I was staying for almost a week. The front desk person was most helpful, and asked if I could come back in 20 minutes, they had someone checking out, and they would have the room cleaned immediately. Great customer service right off the bat. The room itself was on the 14th floor, a really good size for Hong Kong and the price I paid, so I was very happy. Nice soft bed with down bedding, and large open windows of the harbor. The bathroom was nice and big with a small tub, and hair dryer, ect. Came with water, and coffee set up. I also liked they had usb pug in for charging for your phone/ipad next to the bed, making it easy to charge my phone. Wi fi was excellent. The only thing that could be approved upon was the TV channel selection. Only two English channels, and one was the thriller channel which was always playing Nightmare on Elm Street. There's a gym (decent) along with poor (they were working on it, and it was too cold) with a lounge/bar downstairs. I had room service one night, and it was reasonable, tasted decent, and fast. (spaghetti) The bar also does a good happy hour from 5-8. I had a late night Saturday night flight so I asked if there was anything they can do, and they offered a half night rate, having me check out at 6. Promptly at 6, I was able to take a free shuttle to the airport express and off I went. Service here is top notch, from staff opening the door for you, to delivering a space heater when I was cold in the room. Price for what I got I was really happy with.
