Yelp
Review #1200 Jerome always makes for a fun day trip from the Valley. I have been coming up here for many years. For many, Jerome is known as an old mining town. But it is also known for its charm. It is artsy, it is a foodie destination and it has a rich history here in the state of Arizona. It is also haunted (more on that). Jerome is located on a hill called Cleopatra Hill that overlooks the Verde Valley between Prescott and Sedona. Back in its heyday, Jerome was known for copper mining until the 1950's. Today it is a tourist attraction for visitors, artists and photographers from all over the world. I first visited Jerome back in the 90's. My favorite place to eat is the Haunted Hamburger. The food is good and they always have Halloween decorations up. The Flatiron is my favorite place for coffee. You can't miss it because it is housed in a building that looks like NYC's Flatiron building. Jerome's First Saturday Art and Wine Walk takes place every first Saturday of the month and is a nice relaxing evening out. The Christmas Store is a fun place to visit because they sell Christmas items all year round. My favorite places to stay overnight are the Hotel Connor, the Surgeon's House Bed & Breakfast and the Grand Hotel (if you dare!). Jerome is also known as a ghost town. If you love Halloween, this is the place to be. The whole town dresses up for it. During the early days, Jerome was named the "Wickedest Town in the West". Saloons and brothels lined the streets. Gambling was also a big thing. It's believed that many people died in the Jerome Grand Hotel during its previous time as United Verde Hospital. Ghost sightings have been rumored for years at that hotel. Today, the city has fun with the whole haunted thing. Many of the businesses here have a haunted theme to them. There is a book about Jerome's haunted past and they offer ghost tours. One of my favorites things about Jerome is that it is close to many Arizona attractions and towns. Prescott, Sedona and Cottonwood are all nearby. Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot are a couple National Monuments in the area. You can also do some wine tasting at many of the wineries in Oak Creek, Cottonwood or Sedona. I have found the locals in the town of Jerome to be friendly. If you want to plan a fun affordable day away from the Valley, Jerome is a great destination.

Yelp
Quaint town, lots of cute little shops and a nice little variety of restaurants perfect for a day road trip from Phoenix.

Yelp
Great place to spend the afternoon. Unusual shops , great eats, wonderful views! Spent the afternoon browsing and shopping.

Yelp
For some reason I was expecting more from this famous town on the mountain side. Sure there is some great history and the State Historic Park is very good (see separate review) but the town itself has become another typical tourist town with lots of shops and restaurants. Though in this case with a mining theme. Given it was a beautiful Sunday it was pretty crowded and we were lucky to find a parking spot ($5 for the day - we only were there an hour or so). We did stop in the Historical Society and paid the $2 for a tour which was mildly interesting. My advice cruise through town and head to the State Historic Park on the outskirts.

Yelp
This is a planned stop for today, Shopping. We haven't been here for a long time. This is really very tourist oriented. Parking is at a premium, free and paid. There is no gas station in this village. You have to drive to the next town, ten minutes. There are two public bathrooms. A nice one at the Fire Station. Very clean. Mostly shops , Art and saloon type bars.

Yelp
One of the coolest little towns in the US. There's a lot of history and charm here. Originally a copper mining town, Jerome had a population of over 10,000 people in the 20s. Now, it's more like 400+. You won't find a Starbucks or a McDonald's here. I'm not even sure if there's a gas station in town. I don't recall seeing a grocery store either. It's a lovely place to get away from everything commercial and enjoy its small town magic. A few recommendations from personal experience (see separate reviews): -The Jerome Grand Hotel. Previously a hospital. Creepy and cool. -Audrey Headframe Park. Quick stop where you can stand over glass covering a 1,900 foot mine shaft. Loved it. -Nellie Bly Kaleidoscopes. Unique and friendly kaleidoscope shop. -Sliding Jail. Right in the middle of town. Very quick stop. -Art galleries. Walk around and explore. -Maynard James Keenan fans: he owns Puscifer the Store and Caduceus Cellars (next door to each other). While I really liked Caduceus Cellars, I wasn't a huge fan of the Puscifer store. Either way, both are a must for fans of MJK. There are other activities and restaurants that I didn't get to experience. I encourage you to do your own research. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Jerome if you get a chance.

Yelp
Breathtaking views (literally , high elevation) but worth it. Many artisan shops and places to eat. My favorite shops were Nelly Bly and Firefly.
google avatar

Tonitini C.

Yelp
Its a cute little historical town that sits on a little hill a few minutes away from Sedona, AZ. It is the home of Caduceus Cellars (that I fan girl over). But I've noticed how it is wine-country up here! The local stores are locally owned by the community and people here are very welcoming and nice. I do hope that more people visit and support the business too. It seems like there are historical tours etc from the busses that come through in the town. Expect to go on Wine Flights, dine and shop...you are guaranteed to see amazing views, walkable areas, historical landmarks preserved in time.

Yelp
I hate to be this person, but this tourist trap just wasn't worth the drive during our Phoenix/Sedona trip.

Yelp
Tuesday, 4/12/2022 - We stopped by a little town called Jerome, AZ. Cute little town with gift shops, restaurants, etc and lots of kind people. They have a paid parking for $4.00. Make sure to put your parking ticket on your dash board. We checked out several gift shops, Jerome Museum, and decided to head elsewhere for lunch. Nice town.

Yelp
Jerome is just not the kind of place you find on the East Coast. It's a cute little "ghost town" about 40 minutes from Sedona. I guess it was a big copper mining town 100 years ago; but the population dropped from over 50,000 to about 500. Now it seems to feed on tourism ; but it still has the quaint look & feel of a century ago. All the old buildings have been converted into cute shops and restaurants with a very "artsy" vibe. We visited on a Monday morning in July, and were afraid that not many stores would not be open. We were pleasantly surprised that there were many cute shops with everything from Christmas ornaments, to copper jewelry, to Indian crafts, to local artwork and t-shirts. There was even an amazing store that only sold kaleidoscopes! We found a few things and were really impressed by the work of local artists! Plus all the shop owners/workers were very friendly and I think they all had complimentary hand sanitizer just inside the doors. There were several cute eateries around and we stopped for lunch at Haunted Hamburger on a friend's recommendation. It seems to be an iconic restaurant and was very good. There were many other options too, and the smells of delicious food were wafting all across the town. There was at least one hotel in Jerome. I don't know if it warrants a multiple day stay....but it's worth a visit for a day and it's a definite change of pace from. Sedona or any other nearby big cities.

Yelp
Believe it or not this town of about 400 residents is a popular tourist attraction in these parts. There are no gas stations, convenience or grocery stores. I didn't see anything that was part of a chain business not even a Dollar store. There are a few bars, restaurants and local hotels and many souvenir and art stores. If you want a T shirt you can find it here! Some of the art stores are quite nice too. It doesn't start to get busy until around 10 am and then by 5 pm most of the visitors have left and then most of the retail stores have closed. At night it's just a couple of bars and restaurants that are still open. Parking during the busy time is tight with some free street parking and some pay parking in nearby lots. Fortunately the town has a free shuttle service that runs regularly if you park in one of the pay lots. This is a hilly town and small some people will appreciate the shuttle. I've eaten at the Mine Cafe, Haunted Hamburger and Bobby D's and all three were 4 star restaurants. I didn't eat at Ckinkscale because of time but believe it is in that category. I've stayed at the Connor Hotel and enjoyed its old world style and it's excellent location. Jerome is a quaint tiny town nestled in the side of a mountain with a rich history. If you need first world amenities you can get them down the mountain in Clarkdale and Cottonwood and then Sedona is just a little further. It's a nice place to visit and even spend the night.

Yelp
Decided to stop and visit since we were in Sedona and it was less than 35 miles away. We went to do an adventure quest, and being that it was August and temps were getting over 100 with high humidity, we decided to start early in the morning. There are also signs posted warning you to not leave your animals in the car since they can die very quickly from the extreme heat. Jerome is a small and quaint 1 horse town, but worth the drive to go see. There are parks, mines, old buildings, shops, restaurants, and there is plenty of history still evident. We went into several places, and 2 of our favorites were the Haunted Hamburger and Mooey Christmas and Udder Things store. The Haunted Hamburger has a good story and has been featured in articles and on TV. The food is good, reasonable prices, and great service. The Mooey Christmas store has so many gifts, especially if know someone that likes Cows. But there are all kinds of gifts. Very nice owner and her son owns the Haunted Hamburger. Take a stroll down the main streets to see plenty of history. From old buildings, to giant boilers, to the house of Joy.

Yelp
What a cute little town. We came here for some lunch and wine tasting and ended up spending the whole day! So much to see and experience. Cute little shops, art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, historic places and friendly people. They charge $3 for parking, which is worth it. Bobby D's bbq was fantastic. Vino Zona is a great wine tasting room. We definitely plan on going back and staying a night here so we can explore the town a bit more!

Yelp
Some might say that Jerome wasn't built in a day, and they're right! Founded as a mining town in the 19th century, it was named after the United Verde Copper Company's investor and secretary Eugene Jerome. Centuries later, the "bones" of the town still remain as it looks like a lot of the old architecture still remains, adding to the charm of this town. Speaking of bones, they say there's a few spots here that are rumored to be haunted! It's a small town, so there's basically one main parking lot near the park most people park at and you walk everywhere. There are some steep-ish steps to get up the hill so be sure to bring comfy shoes that you don't mind getting a little dusty. The shops and restaurants are quirky, the residents cool and friendly, and it's a sample of a historic mining town all in one. It's about a 2 hour drive from the Phoenix area which makes it a nice little destination for a day trip or a quick weekend getaway. Go visit!

Yelp
Sweetest town to stumble across on our way to Sedona. The public bathroom are clean and lively as were all the shop keepers. Unfortunately we inly stopped to use the wash rooms and stretch our legs. Would definitely choose this as a place to stat longer next time as i love small quirky towns.

Yelp
Just a fun place for a day trip or an overnight!!! We stayed at the Conner Hotel. It was clean, reasonable, centrally located and it had a lot of retro 50's charm. Lunch at Bobble's BBQ (yum) and a late nite outing to Haunted Hamburger. Both places have really nice patios.

Yelp
My husband and I had a wonderful time visiting Jerome. It first came across my mind to visit when I read about a ghost tour being offered. It seemed like it would be fun to participate in exploring old buildings and learning about the history of the old copper mining town. There is definitely a lot of small town warmth in Jerome. All of the local residents , shop keepers, food servers and artists that we came into contact with were welcoming. While here you can visit the largest kaleidoscope store, museums, tour the Jerome State Historic Park and much more. We had lunch at the Haunted Hamburger, shopped in several of the stores and took a tour to learn more about the mines and the history of many of the buildings still standing in town.

Murphy S.

Yelp
Leave it to the Mayor and City Council to kill one of the best tourist attractions in Arizona. Implementing paid parking not only upset the tourists but know the residents are insulting the tourists over parking. We discovered the paid parking on our last visit for lunch at the Haunted Hamburger (something we do several times a year). Parking was a disaster, with very little information about how or where to pay and no information about any shuttle service, it made it very difficult for senior citizens to get around. Even during the week (which when we go to avoid the weekend crowds) there are more cars than parking spaces available. We have decided that senior citizen visitors are no longer encouraged or wanted in Jerome. Consequently we will find other great places for lunch like Dewey or Prescott Valley. Jerome is now just like Sedona and San Diego! Great places to avoid!!!

Yelp
This little town was awesome! If I'd known how cool it was going to be, I'd have planned on staying longer. We had dinner at The Asylum (MUST DO), we stayed at The Connor Hotel and had breakfast at The Clinkscale. The Theater and other shops are totally worth looking for parking. The views are the most beautiful I've ever seen, even if 89A is the most frightening road I've ever driven on.

Yelp
Such a picturesque spot depicting tales of copper mining and ghosts. Great food and galleries.

Yelp
I'll never forget our trip to Jerome. We saw it in the distance sitting up on the mountain. My GF's mom even made some type of comment about, "That little town way up there!" Little did we know that we were driving to that particular town! Touristy town? Absolutely but it's a town that sprung up on the side of the mountain. When watching that cool little mountain town show called South Park, this is what I think of minus the snow. The good news is that there are only so many tourists that will drive up this mountain all at once. It makes it more hippie than touristy AND I LOVE IT! We only went to Jerome because there is a certain winery owned by one of my favorite musicians, Maynard from TOOL. I was in the vicinity and just had to go. I already typed up a review for that winery so I won't blabber on about it in this one. We didn't spend much time in Jerome. It would've been cool to go on some of the ghost tours there. We did check out a cool taphouse. I don't like to aimlessly hang out in random bars but I liked the taphouse in this town. It was cozy. We also needed something to eat! Haunted Hamburger! Of course! Why wouldn't we eat hamburgers... THAT ARE HAUNTED! There's a cool story about the place and this is another spot that I already typed a review for so I won't blabber on here about it. When we were finishing up our meal and heading out, it was already starting to get packed. I could see this town being a complete nightmare during certain times of the year. If you're in Arizona and close to Jerome, go ahead and make the trip. Whether you're in search of ghost tours, art, cobblestone walkways, shops, food or drink, you could easily spend an afternoon or day there.

Yelp
Former mining town, tourist ghost town, current mini Sedona. Our overloaded car didn't love the chug up the mountain. It is steep, and turn-y. But the town is charming AF. A nice place to spend an afternoon or a day. If you aren't staying here, parking might be tricky to find. Once you find it, stay there and get around via your feet. It is a small town. Wineries, bars, restaurants, haunted hotels (and hamburgers :-P), and art galleries galore! Highly recommend at least a short visit to see what it is all about.

Yelp
Such a great little town but have to take a .5 star away for parking. So this review is 4.5 stars. Parking sucks, especially for the Haunted Burger. Obviously, since this is a small historic town the roads are not modern. The little town itself is so cute because it is not modern. It has a nice, antique feel to it. I honestly liked this place more than I did the actual Grand Canyon (which is what I came to Arizona for). There is lots to do- several cool eateries, shops, tours (ghost tours even) and prices are pretty fair. This town was a mining town before it became what it is now. You can also lodge in Jerome, they have places for you to stay. Please do yourself the favor and try Haunted Burger, it was so good! They also have a place that was an asylum before but it is a restaurant now. Totally worth the drive if you ask me :)

Yelp
I had to go into the Bank of America in Sedona, Az because some jerk used my cards for purchases in Michigan thus cards ... cancelled by bank. While in there the sweet woman asked if we had visited Jerome. It wasn't on our list of places to visit but well we detoured as she stated it was a must. What she neglected to say was that it was a narrow, steep road that climbed up and up in order to get to Jerome. As I hate heights I may be exaggerating but my friend did say I was praying as she drove. I didn't realize this ... haha. This old copper mining town was completely worth my brief terror. The views are amazing! Then the town has some very cute shops, wine tasting, art, restaurants, and hotels. The people were friendly and welcoming. It's a place to walk around. You have to experience the "ghost town" on foot. I highly recommend that you add Jerome to your itinerary if visiting this area of Arizona.

Yelp
This sleepy little ghost town is super quaint! There are art galleries everywhere make sure you wear very comfortable shoes because there are hills that you need to climb up and down in order to get from one section of the main street to the next. There are beautiful views everywhere, plenty of photo opps. There are supposedly haunted restaurants here in what is called a haunted hamburger and the other one is called the asylum I've been to neither. This trip I went ended up going to a candy store got chocolate covered pretzels the guy was her super cool because he let us charge our camera batteries there but we ended up buying some caramel popcorn and other find candy there.

Yelp
Loved Jerome! Former mining town that was quite the place to be 100+ years back. Now it is a bit eerie and there's no doubt the town has plenty of stories never to be told. We went to the museum and watched the small movie about the history of Jerome. It was interesting. Walked the streets and enjoyed several shops and chatting with store owners and locals. Lots of artist up her now and tons of art shops. A couple good choices for food. Parking was difficult on a Saturday in summertime. It's not too much cooler up here either so don't assume your escaping the heat.

Yelp
Jerome Arizona is a great little dog mining town. It comprises dozens of old stores with gift items. Lots of these shops. Also many bars and cafe's. It's has a park area. Wild animals roam around. Includes Havolinas. Deer and more. Check it out. It's a must.

Yelp
Jerome, Arizona --- "Mile-High" town historic Jerome is a "Run-A-Way Bill" Favorite ... Jerome has history; great local bars & eateries; interesting & interactive locals (@ 400+ residents); plus even the tourist visitors are nice ... 2 full-time bars, plus 2 eateries that have full bars where locals can be found interacting with each other ... "Jerome" has a park area called "The Steps" were you can legally drink your favorite pARTy Beverage ... "The Steps" is where about 20 local "outcasts" hang out each day (at different times) and talk & play music ... These outcasts are know as the "Step Children" ... which makes me smile! I met 26 year young "StepChild" Nick who shared some Jerome trivia ... Every year or so the residents get together and take a Jerome group picture ... pretty cool! One is scheduled for May (although Step Children not included ) "Run-A-Way Bill" was here! day 062 "DUSA 2017" (Discover USA) #RunAwayBill #DUSA2017 04.26.17

Yelp
Very cool small town with a rare name! Cool shops and restaurants! Plus it's less than 30 miles from Sedona! This is a must visit town in Arizona!

Yelp
OMG this town is amazing! Jerome is an old mining town nestled in the hills overlooking the Verde Valley all the way to Sedona. There is nothing but pure history here. The town also pays homage to the booming prostitution that once thrived here as well. Park the car and stroll down the cobblestone streets and walkways.

Yelp
I love this little town perched on top of the hill. Some of the buildings defy belief that they can stand. A great place to visit and spend some time. This place is a must see if you are in the area.

Yelp
This is a definitely must see ghost town if you're in the area you won't be disappointed. They have food restaurants wineries and great historical charm.

Yelp
Simply put, Old mining town that is well worth the off the beaten path visit! Surviving after all these years, and even with roughly only 450 residents left, it's the cutest little town ever! Perched on a mountain side, there's several shopping locations, historic bars, town museum, and fantastic views of this mining area that saw its boom years ago!!

N A F.

Yelp
Recently drove to Jerome, parked my vehicle, and started walking to my favorite store as I had for many years, only to learn that they are charging for parking now! I wouldn't have realized it if I hadn't seen an officer writing up a ticket for somebody. The meters/kiosks are not too obvious at all, and I would have been written up too if I hadn't seen this officer! Be careful. I get the feeling they're being a little sneaky!

Yelp
One of our top places to road trip to! Our favorite route is to take 89 from Sedona to Jerome and then up Mingus Mountain and into Prescott. It's a very beautiful drive with fun windy mountain roads. Jerome has so many great photo ops, old buildings, good eats, art galleries, and spooky ghost tours. We also stop to see the man blowing glass. A little pricey to shop but it's nice to window shop as well. Overall, a must stop place to visit!

Yelp
Great little town to visit in Arizona. I will visit again. Great restaurants and art galleries and state park.
google avatar

Marcia V.

Yelp
There is much to see and much to do in this town and I barely got to see any of it! It is a small town but it packs a big punch. There are wineries, breweries, little shops, restaurants, a ghost town, and limited/difficult parking.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
What a disappointment. When I heard we were going to a ghost town, I did not expect every building to be occupied by tourist trap stores. Seriously, this is not worth the trip. There must be some real ghost towns in AZ, and this is not it. A town cannot be a ghost town if every building is occupied. Even the old theater, which houses a museum upstairs, is a tourist shop on the ground level. Even the original restaurant has expanded so that only a small portion remains of the original. Go online, look at pictures of Jerome buildings from the outside and you get the ghost town experience. You want to go to tourist trap stores, then yes, go to Jerome.

K T.

Yelp
Love love love Jerome nice get away for the day or over night. Cute unique shops, friendly shop owners. Great views of the valley. Nice restaurants, bars all around good time.
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
Jerome is an awesome little town with lots going on. There is tons of shopping anywhere from nice artsy places to your typical touristy stuff. There are tons of great local restaurants and bars. The old copper mining town is full of history and stories. It's a great day trip from Phoenix or if you are staying in Sedona or Flagstaff. With the town bing built on the side of the "hill" parking and driving is tight, everything is easily walkable. A great little place to explore and the views are awesome!
google avatar

Russell M.

Yelp
Hard to believe I've lived in the Verde Valley for more than 30 years. When I arrived, Jerome was pretty dilapidated and forgotten, Gradually, investors and entrepreneurs recognized its potential and started remodeling and rebuilding things. It's quite inviting now with lots of interesting shops and more than decent eateries and bars. Great place to spend a day although parking can be challenging. Offering spectacular views of Sedona and the Verde Valley, but wear comfy shoes because there are steep grades and climbs in places. A great place to stop on your way to or from Prescott.

Connie T.

Yelp
This was my favorite town in Arizona. We arrived late afternoon so we did not have sufficient time to enjoy everything. I am headed back and will take all my guests there.

Yelp
This is one of the coolest little towns in America. This is a must see stop if your in or around central AZ. Lots of sights to see and amazing views.

Yelp
Must give it 5 stars for outstanding human kindness shown by its manager James Pantoja. We didn't quite make it inside because as were heading through the parking lot our little boy a toddler starting crying and we decided to sit down on the bench right before your walk in. I took out my phone/wallet to check out Jerome on the internet and because our little boy wasn't having it we decided that we wouldn't be able to go and in the the rush to get him back to the car l left my phone on the bench. Didn't realize I left it until two hours later in Phoenix, called it and the manager James answered it and told me a lady found it on the bench! I was so thankful and asked what time they close (thinking I'll have to drive back another 2 hours and round trip 4 hours) James asked where I was (told him Phoenix) and to my surprise he told me that he was heading that way home and that he be happy to drop it off!!! I couldn't believe it. What a nice guy. So refreshing in this world where so many time people wouldn't care. Sure enough we met at a Starbucks off the 10 freeway as he timed his trip, went in and he handed me phone/wallet with EVERYTHING still in it!!! Any place that employs good people like that is worth visiting.
