"Food shopping is best done Parisian-style in Jersey City, by shopping often for fresh produce. Whole Foods is coming, but I love the Fish Stand, Van Hook Cheese Shop, Darke Pines butcher shop, and Cool Vines’ two locations for cheese and wine. It’s also a great spot to pick up a house gift." - Annie Fitzsimmons

I’ve tried a few local fish shops, but honestly, I couldn’t tell much difference between them and larger stores like Whole Foods. I never felt the need to pay extra for what felt like the same experience. But this fish market is different. The salmon here has an incredible flavor, and even when I accidentally overcook it, it stays tender. Their fish doesn’t require any special cooking skills to taste great. I’m really grateful to have such a high-quality place nearby

I took a Lyft to get there from Jersey City, the driver dropped me off one block too far. Anyway, i bought close to 2 Ibs of Salmon steak, i bake it with my own mixed slices, it is very fresh and was so delicious, the salmon was juicy and smooth after baking for 20 mins at 350F. It is full of flavour. Salmon steak tends to get flaky and dry when baked. This is different and it is so good. My family really enjoyed it. The owner is friendly and helpful.

Love their prepared foods. I've had the crab cakes and today I picked up some Scungilli (conch fish) salad, which I had over cucumber slices, but you can easily eat on its own or with bread/crackers.

This store has great fresh and frozen fish available. They also have all kinds of shellfish. Better go early or reserve in advance because they are popular! Added pic of prepared cod which was delicious!

Google
I bought 1/2 pound of salmon and 1/2 pound of sashimi grade tuna from here for a poke/sashimi night! Call ahead to see what they have in stock. They might also be able to order your choice of fish ahead of time too, if you give them a week notice.

Very positive experience so far. Ordered online branzino butterfly and salmon fillet then picked up in a store. Good quality, good experience. Will definitely come back.

Google
This place is great. Fresh selection with a very friendly staff to help answer your questions and talk about what’s available. There’s also very helpful with suggestions on how to prepare what you buy. The shrimp burgers are great too. Tip: don’t overlook the marinade and miscellaneous items on the rack opposite the fish selection.

The fish in this place is as fresh as when I'm in my native Latin American country. So fresh that the flesh of the fish feels and smells like the morning's catch. Not once has the fish and seafood in this place disappointed me. The fish is so fresh, that running errands, I have found myself running around with fish longer than I would have wanted to. And yet, when I opened up the package expecting to catch a whiff that the fish had gone bad during my errands, not a WHIFF of anything but fresh fish. This goes to show you how fresh the fish is. The owner, who is also the one who manages the counter, is cordial, respectful, helpful and patient; I've gone in to shop several times while talking to my dad on the phone during the brief window of time in the week when I can catch up with him AND when I'm home early enough from work to catch the sea food stand open. This is an amazing shop, I now shop here weekly.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of stopping by at their table at the Project Market!! I had a bowl of their Manhattan Clam Chowder and it was phenomenal!!! Nice chunks of claims and such a tasty broth!! I will def be stopping by their store on Jersey

Yelp
Best seafood in JC. Aways fresh and amazing selection. Store stuff is super helpful and friendly. The only thing I would improve is delivery. Never available on the same day. Otherwise my go to for a seafood dinner.

David Y.

Yelp
Love this place. Expensive but worth it. High quality seafood that is responsibly sourced. Never had a negative experience.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about the JC Fish Stand. Everything is excellent from their service, the prices, the people and of course - the fish! I highly recommend!

Yelp
I organized a Game of Thrones dinner and viewing party (I know, nerd) and I wanted to serve oysters and clams (sans cockles) in honor of Arya Stark. I reached out to John (one of the owners) at The Fish Stand and he was super responsive and eager to help out. Despite the fact that their store is closed on Sundays, they delivered to my apartment the order complete with the serving containers, ice, lemons, cocktail sauce, mignonette and horseradish at no additional cost. The oysters and clams were shucked and presented perfectly and most importantly, they were delicious! They were a huge hit at my party! I highly recommend The Fish Stand based on the excellent customer service I received and the quality of my order. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am with The Fish Stand. Consider me a loyal customer for life!

Juliana S.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! The seafood is always fresh and delicious and let's not forget about their cakes!!! Their various cakes (so far I have tried cod/gouda, salmon and shrimp) are really tasty. They have various new catches I have never had so it's always great to come in and try new things. Will be coming back of course!

Dani L.

Yelp
Seriously fresh seafood right in the heart of downtown jersey city. There's a nice variety of seafood from catch of the day to scallops to salmon, everything is always delicious. I got a great cut of corvina and made some delicious ceviche with it. Definitely a must stop if you're walking around, but just a heads up it's not cheap. If you want good seafood though, it's worth the price.

Michelle O.

Yelp
Ordered a cup of their New England clam chowder from their stand at the project market. $5 for a cup or $15 for a quart. This is legit chowder where you can taste and see the clams. It's a creamy, hearty soup with potatoes that's so good drink in a chilly December day. Portions are generous too. I'm looking forward to ordering fresh seafood from them the next time I visit their stand at the grove street farmers market.

Angelo T.

Yelp
My first fish BBQ as a JC resident was with fish bought by this place. I am speechless. Amazing quality fish, I bought a whole octopus, their wild shrimp, and swordfish. Our guests were in love with the food. Thank you guys, you have just gotten a new regular customer!

Joseph C.

Yelp
A neighborhood fave! My to-go for fresh fish and also prepared orders like their tuna salad (put on top of some water crackers and wash it down your favorite nice bev under the shade in Van Vorst Park = bliss in heaven). Friendly staff too!

Maggie R.

Yelp
The Fish Market sells super super super fresh fish. Yes, it comes with a price - but there is an obvious difference when you eat the fish that comes from the Fish Market and the fish that comes from the grocery store. Everything I have purchased has been fresh and delicious. It's a pretty simple place, basically just a counter with fresh fish on ice! You order by the weight and they'll help you out if you aren't sure how much to get. They have a rotating menu so there's always different fish available when you stop in! And they always throw in a lemon (nice touch!) and also have some spices available for purchase. I'm so happy to have them in the neighborhood!

Ravi C.

Yelp
Love this place. We get fish from here weekly. Employees are great and knowledgeable. Fish is great with multiple options. Call ahead for big orders or specific inquiries because it's busy and they sometimes sell out. Price is higher than at supermarkets but well worth it for quality.

Kelly F.

Yelp
Definitely one of the biggest things I miss about jersey city! I frequented this shop 1-2x per week until our move. Great items & quality. Best scallops, cod, crab cakes !

Tony J.

Yelp
Fresh fish with a rotating menu. You never know what they'll have until the day of. I bought a pound of monkfish from them for $22, and cooked it later that day in a lemon butter sauce (they gave me a free lemon with my purchase). It was tender, moist, and full of umami. The prices are more expensive than local supermarkets (even a common fish like salmon was selling for close to $20), but the quality is also up a notch.

John K.

Yelp
Great neighborhood business in the heart of Jersey City. Excellent service and food quality. Even in the midst of a holiday and Covid restrictions JC Fish Stand is exceptionally good.

Marian M.

Yelp
I recently placed a pickup order online for some salmon. I loved how easy it was to place the order online and received a text notification when my order was ready for pickup. The salmon was so fresh and amazing. It melted like butter when I ate it for dinner. It was incredible!!! I am definitely going to continue buying fresh seafood from Jersey City Fish Stand on a weekly basis going forward. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going here if you need seafood!!

kay b.

Yelp
Oysters, crab legs, shrimp, anything. Everything from this Fish Stand is crisp, fresh, marvelous. I'm biased. I like to shuvk my own oysters and though I love happy hours, I'm not understanding why I pay 3x the price when I can do it at home. Especially living in coastal cities, so because my inner curmudgeon old man likes a deal, I go to JC Fish Stand to pick up my own Oysters. Each time they are fresh and light with subtle brine, likely Wellfleets. I also do a brilliant crab and seafood boil. I do enough where one would think I do mukbang. Though I love the plastic bib at restaurants and novelty, the seafood isn't always cooked properly in restaurants. Again, I love a lavish food life but don't want to pay a rental deposit for subpar sauce when I can make it all at home under 30 min. All the seafood here is tasty, succulent, and honestly remarkable for my meals. The fish mongers are thoughtful and not haughty as some specialty shops tend to be in that hipster area. They are kind, to the point, well informed. I recommend your next seafood purchase here over any grocery store in JC. You'll taste the freshness and can get the latest catch for an ultimately satisfying meal.

Sean L.

Yelp
Hidden gem in JC! Nice variety for a smaller store, and they bring their fish to the weekly Grove St farmer's markets!

Andrew B.

Yelp
I love this place! Came here for the first time and bought some sushi grade tuna and sushi grade salmon. Both were delicious! The man behind the counter was very knowledgeable about fish and knew the origin and how the fish was transported. It is well worth the price to get quality fish. I look forward to coming back in the future.

Ben G.

Yelp
Don't show up a minute after closing. I've been coming here for 4 years. The fish is great, the prices are decent, and the service is hit or miss depending on who's working the counter. Walked in a minute after closing. Guy at the counter said sorry we're closed. The last customer says,"let'em pick something quick" and the guy responds,"nah! I gotta be somewhere." That's what you get for 4 years of loyalty. I'll get my fish from Key Foods down the street from now on.

Eric K.

Yelp
If you are in Downtown JC, enjoy cooking fresh fish, and are not buying your fish from the JC Fish Stand, you are missing out! A much needed addition to the Downtown foodie shopping scene. Beautifully fresh fish, nice selection which varies with the "daily catch," and friendly staff who know what they are doing. Yes, folks, wonderfully fresh fish comes with a price, as do any other quality ingredients. I find their prices appropriate, comparing with the usual spots I get my fresh fish in the City. Now that I discovered this place, which is a quick walk from Grove St station, it will be a regular stop on my commute home. Now if we only had a local butcher Downtown as well (anyone listening?!)...

Eric K.

Yelp
What an amazing addition to the neighborhood! I first became a fan of JC Fish Stand when they were doing markets around the area, and once they opened a full time store I was ecstatic as there is nowhere else around town to get fresh seafood. But it's not just the fact that they sell seafood that brings me back- it's the way they do it. The employees (usually it's one of the owners!) are super informative about their product. They will tell you the when/where/how of each item they are selling, and in addition are always super thorough in cleaning the fish prior to wrapping it for me. I also appreciate how I never have to hesitate asking the best way to cook something. The variety of fish they sell is great as it changes based on availability. I have had fish from here that I frankly never saw outside of a fancy restaurant prior. Also- seeing a whole Monkfish is really cool in person! Last but not least- they also sell premade "to go" containers here, and I frequently am walking away with some smoked salmon and crab dip. The crab dip is homemade and it's freaking delicious.

Samantha C.

Yelp
My favorite stop for fresh seafood. I've picked up pieces from shoprite out of pure convenience, but making the extra stop is worth the time. Everything is always fresh & they're always a ton of help on suggestions. Fairly priced and even have some pre-packaged soups and other items.

Christina D.

Yelp
Got their wild shrimp, wild salmon and monkfish. All were as fresh as can be!!! The pricing is certainly high but that's what you have to pay for fresh and wild seafood! I would gladly pay the price and eat less and actually TASTE the fish than buy that farmed stuff that tastes like nothing. Great selection and cute little store.

Darla M.

Yelp
How I LOVE Jersey City Fish Stand! Somehow I always missed their stand during the summertime farmers' markets in the neighborhood. Since they've opened a brick-and-mortar shop, I've picked up some fantastic bay scallops and lots of salmon. I've even given the Spanish mackerel a shot at their suggestion (it was a win!). The shop owners are fantastic: they make seafood shopping and prep a lot less intimidating than it otherwise would be! Don't be afraid to ask them for ideas on dinner.

David Y.

Yelp
Was looking for a quality fish market around downtown jersey area and finally found one that meets all of my expectations :)

Beltkiss S.

Yelp
I bought some scallops a while back from their fish stand. They were huge succulent and sweet. Also, prices were better than Whole Foods. It felt good to support a local JC spot. The woman working the stand was super nice. They were also very fresh and had very little sand. I came home cooked them in lemon butter. They were amazing ! I hope to visit their store one of these days to try their other fish and shell fish.

Daniella M.

Yelp
Having just moved to JC, I was walking down the street and poked my head into the JC Fish Stand to check it out. I ended up taking home some smoked salmon and it is THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. And I know from smoked salmon. It was perfect. Now I am ruined and will never be able to go back to "regular" lox. Looking forward to trying everything else they have!

Nicole M.

Yelp
Such a gem to have in the neighborhood! Fish was fresh and delicious, service was quick and kind, and New England clam chowder was so tasty! I love their online ordering service -- makes life easy and alleviates worry about what will be in stock.

Paula G.

Yelp
So frustrating to get fish "past it's prime". Stopped in to grab dinner tonight- asked what's fresh- was told the sole was local and great, only to get it home, and smell an ammonia-ish smell when I unwrapped it. Super frustrating from the only shop in town. I trusted you.

Sandra M.

Yelp
I love this stand and these people! They are so knowledgeable and helpful and even make suggestions that have always been spot on! The staff is friendly and an awesome addition to this community!!

Bloss C.

Yelp
Fresh Fish makes my world go round and round! I was really excited to see this place open, but due to my work schedule and that they are only open until 3pm on Saturdays (closed Sundays) it took me a while to get down there. Finally made it one Saturday and scored some great clams, which my fella and I both agreed we haven't cooked with as good clams since we were in Maine 2 years ago. All the fish looked really fresh and I'll definitely be back for some of that. One of the things I loved about the store was they have about 10 different spice mixes that they sold for 50 cents a scope, that is amazing! So nice not to have to shell out $4 at the super market for a spice mix you are not sure you'll ever use again. I also learned about their Healthy Eating Club which has two pickup dates a week. There is a selection of fish which you preorder 6 oz portions for pick-up either Monday or Thursday. The benefits of preordering are a 5% discount and you are guaranteed to get your fish, even if they sell out. From what I can see their fish has not been frozen and is not farmed, which is the way we all should eat fish. So excited this placed opened up in JC!!!!!

cory b.

Yelp
Honestly, a city of this size in the downtown area without a serious fresh fish place? Awful. Glad they took over this place and have given the neighborhood a good place to get reasonable prices on high-quality fish and other seafood.

Kendall B.

Yelp
I went last week to buy some shrimp and have been meaning to write a review- the shrimp was so fresh and delicious, and the service we received was excellent. I'm so happy to finally have somewhere in jersey city that sells fresh amazing quality seafood!

Shannon L.

Yelp
Hands down best fish shop in the Hudson County area! I've been getting a variety of fish from both their farmers market stand and store front on Jersey City Ave; always a great experience. Their Salmon, scallops and homemade crab dip are a few of my favorites. In addition to the delicious fish the customer service is also fantastic!

MJ L.

Yelp
Heard about this place from a friend. Picked up cod today. It was very fresh! Happy there's now a fish market in town.

Michelle S.

Yelp
Love the fish stand!! We buy from them at the Hoboken Garden St. farmer's market, or stop by the shop. They are great to work with and have found some special things for us, quality is always excellent. On my way there now!!! Thanks, John!!!

Lailah S.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place. The staff is always very friendly and super knowledgeable. The fish is beyond fresh and they have some prepared items like seafood salad, soups and ready to cook salmon burger (which are amazing and only 5$ a burger). Since buying my fish here I now refuse to buy it anywhere else!

M H.

Yelp
Like many, I was excited by the news of downtown getting a fish market as we were definitely in need of one. I've purchased fish there five or six times now and am not sure I'll go back. The location is great and the recommendations have always been good but simply put, they do a crap job of cleaning the fish. A lot of people aren't that practiced when it comes to cleaning fish so I'd expect a fish market to handle it for you - especially at the prices they're charging since I wouldn't call it a bargain. I'd skip the complimentary lemon and just do a stellar job at cleaning the fish if I were them. Disappointing.

saije b.

Yelp
I just took my last bite of a delicious cod filet. I was desperately in search of a vendor that had fresh fish in JC after moving here from Manhattan this year. After a quick search on Yelp I discovered this place. I went to their store front yesterday which is small and tucked away but perfect in every way. The fish was fresh, reasonably priced-at least in comparison to what I used to pay in the city ( the filet was big enough for two $6.50) the customer service friendly they even offered me a free lemon. Good thing because it was the one item I forgot to purchase at the produce market before I picked up my fish. The overall environment very clean and welcoming. I am so happy for the discovery! May they continue to thrive. It's my new go to spot for fresh fish!

Joe H.

Yelp
Excellent fish and so convenient in JC. Love that the place is concerned with sustainable sourcing. Also convenient that they have little side dishes when you're looking to quickly put together a dinner.

Rick S.

Yelp
A great little fish store with a nice selection of fish at a range of prices. Very friendly and helpful service and such delicious fish. The first time we bought fresh oysters in the shell, we were given a quick instruction on oyster shucking. Great fun and wonderful oysters. Love their scallops, as well as trout, salmon and cod.

J L.

Yelp
The quality of their offerings is insane!! Ive bought various things and all were incredible. Def the freshest scallops ive everr had - not water packed (dry) so cooks in a couple of minds and nof a hint of rubberyness. Obviously isnt cheap - but you def get what you pay for. A must visit store!

Stuart Y.

Yelp
A very nice welcome to Jersey St. Fresh and eye-pleasing seafood, like having the farmers market open daily. They have a large television board with all the available fish/shellfish, where farmed, method of catch, really helps you make an educated decision about what you're cooking and eating tonight. Fair prices for the very high quality and knowledgable staff. Fresh shrimp comes in on Tuesdays!

Diana S.

Yelp
When I walked in the market, it did not have a stinky fishy smell. Good sign of good fresh fish. I got cod & was fresh and delicious!

Shauna F.

Yelp
Love this place! Such a great addition to the neighborhood, much needed. Love how they provide detailed info about all of their daily offerings. I've had the salmon, cod, trout, mackerel, bass, shrimp - many times, always so yummy. It makes me happy to see that they still have a stand at the farmers market too, now that it's back. Thanks for bringing fresh fish to JC!

Russell F.

Yelp
Great produce and great people who are doing what they love. Great selection every day of fresh fish and wonderful seafood salads. Highly recommend!

Akshay P.

Yelp
My wife and I went to the opening day ceremony at their new storefront. Great people, and a wide selection of FRESH seafood. I like that they have small batches of the catch of the day, so at the risk of running out of certain varieties, you know youre getting the absolute best available. Everyone behind the counter was so helpful, they know what they're talking about, and they even offered us lemons to go with our purchase. We bought the tuna steaks (huge!) and some shrimp (they had trays for the opening, and after trying them we couldn't resist). We cooked the tuna steaks this weekend, and they were so much better than expected that I had to write this review. I'm used to supermarket filets, so real fresh seafood was an eye-opener. It's pricier than frozen or supermarket stuff, but the difference in quality is so obvious that it's worth it. We will definitely be back, and it's nice to see a real fish market in the neighborhood.
