This is a top-rated restaurant near my parents' place that's called Jessie's Harvest House. My wife's name is Jessie (spelled correctly). She likes harvests. And houses. How could we not give it a shot?
And I like this place. I like the menu. I like that a lot of their produce comes from a local spot (Fromer Market Gardens). I like the lovely staff, the casual feel, and the outdoor seating (necessary in these times), even if I feel like the deck should be on the other side (with mountain views instead of road views).
I suppose I don't love that the price point is surprisingly high ($32 for a chicken dish is steep even in NYC), but quality ingredients do cost money, and the food delivers the quality for the most part as well.
We started with the Sunburst Salad, which, like all my favorite salads, has tons of cheese (#healthy). In this case, the goat cheese made an already tasty mix of berries and greens richer and better, along with an outstanding vinaigrette. We also split Grandma Jessie's Meatballs, which were stellar, even though the image of my wife as a grandma was slightly unwelcome.
For mains, we chose the steelhead trout, and the ricotta gnudi. (And by that I mean my wife chose them; I really wanted to try the burger or the steak, but Jessie wears the pants at Jessie's.)
The trout was wonderfully cooked, with an excellent sear, and no one has ever been sad about a lemon-tarragon butter. Unfortunately, the peewee potatoes weren't as crispy as advertised, but overall a successful dish with good flavor, although the vegetables were underseasoned.
The gnudi was billed incorrectly, as the fried eggplant listed under the ingredients is absolutely the star of the show. This dish is gorgeous, and not at all what we expected. Seriously, look at the photo, it's stunning. Unfortunately, the headlining gnudi were too large and doughy, and just about everything on the plate was underseasoned (we had to ask for salt and pepper). All in all, an interesting and beautiful plate, but at the price point you'd hope for stronger execution.
Overall, I like Jessie's so far. I was a little surprised how casual the restaurant is; it's a little strange to drink out of plastic water glasses at a picnic table when you drop so much cash on dinner, but it's COVID times and I don't know their life.
