A First-timer's Guide to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

"One of several on-site rental vendors in the village, this shop (along with other local outfitters) rents skis, poles, boots, and helmets; some vendors offer local delivery through a dedicated delivery service, and rentals can be reserved online and typically picked up after 3 p.m. the day before skiing is planned." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. Located across from the Bridger Gondola, JH Sports is the primary place in Teton Village to buy Jackson Hole branded gear or gifts. They also have a lot of other nice sporting good merchandise in here as well. A great store to visit!

If you pay for rentals online, you save 20%, but be super careful because they automatically clicked demo skis, which I didn’t need as a beginner/intermediate. After paying online, you go to the computers in-person to print stickers. This will go on your skis. First they will get a boot for you, then size the ski to your boot size in another line. Finally you go to the cashier who will ask if you want rental insurance (say no). You won’t need it unless you ski like crazy. Ask for poles because they won’t automatically give them to you. For me, one ski boot was significantly looser than the other, even on maximum tightness. You can bring the boots back for a better size, even if you go down the slopes once or twice.

Airline lost my luggage & they had it all! From Smartwool quick dry undies, sports bras, fantastic selection of hiking shoes, shirts, pants, carrying gear- they have it all. Audra is awesome too! Super helpful in my time of turmoil. Trip saved! Phew 😮‍💨

Google
Rented Bikes and gear for downhill fun today for Dad, 14yo and 9yo. Very helpful, happy freindly front desk staff member. Our 9 yo got injured on the first run, and couldn't continue. We got a refund! Thanks to the girl at the desk for looking after us. She deserves a raise! I'd love to come back and do it all again.

I had my first downhill Mt biking experience with this company. The rental process is very streamlined! I was on the mountain within 10 minutes of paying. I had such an amazing time here! Thank you guys!

Nate has been nothing less than outstanding. He helped with everything and made the process super easy. I do 2 or 3 ski trip per year all over for the past 10 years and its probably the rest ski rental place experience I had.

Saw Aiden m about a pair of boots my wife rented and loved asked him if I could buy a pair from the rental fleet and he sold them too me !! My wife is so excited to have the comfy boots and we are happy to have mom on the hill and happy with us !!

Plenty of skiing for everyone. No restrooms or lockers near ski racks. 🤔 Great ski lift scan pass system and easy online lift and equipment rentals.

Yelp
Jackson Hole Sports helped make my most recent ski vacation to Wyoming a memorable one. I'm relatively new to the sport but knew from a past trip that rentals were not the way to go if I wanted to enjoy my week of skiing. The team here was able to squeeze me in last minute for a bootfitting (I had an appointment earlier at another store in Teton Village who told me they didn't have the brands that would fit my feet). And after about 1 hour of heating the boot and molding it to accommodate my navicular, Will had set me up with an awesome pair of Salomon BOA ski boots that are arguably the best-fitting shoes I own. What a delight these boots were on the slopes last week: Zero foot pain. Will even made great sock recommendations that ensured dryness and comfort. I couldn't be happier with my new ski boots, and it was all thanks to Will. Next, I needed new ski goggles, and Ali at the front was incredibly helpful and knowledgable. She recognized that a low bridge fit might be more suitable for my face. Ali definitely came through, and these made a huge difference last week with the snow storms, as the ability to easily swap out lenses magnetically on my Smith goggles ensured the best visibility. I was so impressed with the team here at JHS and made a few more trips back to the shop throughout my week in Jackson Hole. Everyone there was incredibly professional providing great service, and the store stocks the best brands and the quality of their goods was world-class.

Yelp
Very cool area with tons to do. Tandem Parasailing was on our list and was totally worth it. The tetons are some of the most scenic mountains in the US and this was an amazing way to view them.

Just Another Diner A.

Yelp
Outstanding service from the boot fitting department. Committed, great attitude, creative - Will is an ace. The difference in my control over my skis is amazing, and my 2-year-old boots are no longer a liability.

Yelp
The staff goes above and beyond to answer your questions and assist you with the process... my only recommended change is overnight boot storage so you don't have to carry them back to the hotel. Most other resorts hold your rental skis and boots together while you have them reserved... but they otherwise were wonderful!

Yelp
Happy with a full tune here, so this is for the repair shop. From the main store, I picked up a few stickers but not much else to say, though I did hit the Hole in the Wall snowboard counter upstairs and came away happy. Friendly staff, board came out fine. A world of difference with fresh edges. A bit pricey but if you treat it as paying for overnight storage too (if that actually helps you) then it's not so bad. Location is obviously unbeatable as it's right by the lifts. Sister did the same full tune for her board as well and was happy with the results.

Yelp
Efficiency is key. And JHS has that down pat. The process to get boots is a cinch. We reserved our rentals (& lift tickets) online in advance of our trip. It's not the simplest website to use ever & despite sending my parents step by step screenshots of the process, they still could not figure it out.... somewhat telling. When you arrive, the sport center is at the base of the mountain (above the cafe- walk up the steps). If you reserved in advance you head to one of the computers on the left upon entering and enter your confirmation code to print out a sheet. You then head to the boot try on area where they bring you different styles to determine what suits you best. Next you head to the ski department where they pair you up with the best skis. I'm dropping a star because my first set of boots were 2 sizes too large...! I'm so fortunate I did not get hurt on my first run. I immediately brought them in and when they realized, they were stunned & apologetic at how off the first boots were. My next set of boots were 1 size too small. By the time I walked to the lift, my foot was aching from lack of blood flow. It was excruciating until I could get the boot off. Finally, 3rd try! I got the right boots and skis. I have to drop a star for this as I've never had such a challenging time finding the right fit for rentals. Other than that, the staff was accommodating and attempted (repeatedly) to help me find the proper fit. I loved the skis & boots that finally fit right. So much so I wanted to buy them at the end of our stay as they were "demos", but I was informed I couldn't buy them. They only sell rentals in the summer. So that's the scoop! Good place just be persistent if the boots don't fit and do not hesitate to ask for another brand or style if they don't fit quite right.

Yelp
I bought a pair of very expensive Smith goggles with one of the staff helping me and suggesting that they were the best for me. I spent almost $300 on them which is the most I've ever spent on goggles. I took them out for ONE run and snow and fog went all over my eyes and the lens. After the one run, I went back to store to exchange them to a smaller size and they said all sales are final. I was never told sales were final. What kind of policy is that??? WTF! I was gonna buy boots for my kids from them but screw that. Make sure you absolutely want what you are buying before paying for them or you too will get screwed.

Yelp
If you're looking for a boot fitter, Pat Sullivan is your guy. So knowledgeable not just about the boots, but also the anatomy of your foot and how it will effect the fit. Truly goes above and beyond. Even though nothing fit due to my odd shaped feet, he went out of his way to shape a liner just to show me how a boot should really fit, and then recommended other models that they don't carry, and other boot fitters in ski towns near where I live. I honestly can't imagine there's a better boot fitter out there, truly exceptional.

Yelp
Rude, dishonest staff. Overpriced as all get out and hitting you up for extra fees right and left. I was not informed of their insurance policy and was very surprised to be charged $75 on top of my nearly $400 rentals fee because of a tiny knick in the bottom of one ski. Wound up paying more for rentals than for a new pair of skis. When I complained about this, one of the staff members smugly informed me that I had "made a bad financial decision" by renting from them. As if that somehow makes them look good? Wow. Yes, I did make a bad financial decision, renting from them. And hopefully future renters do not make the same mistake. Take your business elsewhere.

Yelp
I brought my AC40 Volkl skis into the shop on the first day of the 2015/2016 season. I had done some p-tex work myself and just wanted a quick iron on wax job. An iron on wax will set you back $15. The technician took a look at my skis and commented that the skis needed some serious work. Being the cheapskate that I am, I told him that I only wanted a hot wax. He told me that he really recommended doing a base-grind and guaranteed that I'd be super happy with the results. He also promised to give me the fabled "bro-deal." I returned 30 minutes later (845 am, just in time for the lifts to open at 9 am) and I was absolutely shocked at the work. My skis looked brand spanking new. Having spent an hour working on the skis a few days previously, the work completed by the technician made my work look like a serious amateur at best. I was blown away at the work. I walked away with a "bro-deal" and skis that carved like a hot knife through butter. Really stoked on the quality of work, the time it took to turn around, and the friendliness of the staff. Big thumbs up JH Sports! Call them at 307-739-2690 to get your gear in tip top shape for the slopes!

Yelp
This is really where you want to go for any snowboarding stuff. Between boots and boards they know what they're doing. My boyfriend came in here with some boots that weren't fitting quite right. They heat fixed until they were the perfect fit. They also do custom insoles. Coming here was almost like an experience, you get to sit down, chat, get your boots fixed and have a beer. Ask them any questions and they are more than likely to help. I think they also have a great and fashionable selection of clothes. Maybe they are a little expensive but they hold quality goods.

Yelp
Summer Mountain biking Possible pics of you biking @ http://jackson.elevationimaging.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=0 READ WARNINGS. This is like someone giving you a race motorcycle with the gas stuck on. You are riding down a mountain.... constant acceleration You are on a full suspension bike... does weird things You have disk brakes without ABS... skids You have brakes just for the front tire... Endo (do not know what that is- do not do this) There are jumps taller than you are on the trail.... yeah I saw a man strapped to a board being taken off the trail. I had some experience on mountain bikes & motorcycles so I was... OK on the easy trails. After a few times, I did OK on the medium trails, but went too slow for the more avid bikers. I got way too comfortable and jumped way too high by days end for my age & recovery time. This was the $100 workout (all day lift ticket, race bike rental & gear) that I wish I trained for before I came here. I would do it again. Start early and stay late to avoid the midday rush.

Yelp
We rented skis here for 3 days and bought a pair of goggles & 2 helmets at the shop. Great service. My husband and I both got the demo ski package was well as my dad. I skied 3 different pairs of skis and the guys working the rentals never missed a beat. The switched them out quickly with no hassle. I finally settled into some K2s that could handle the powder but that were shorter. The online checkin really speeds things up. They have customer service down. We kept buying these crappy hand warmers (YakTrax) the only brand they had and they broke in our gloves. They gave us new packets for free and were really cool about it. We picked up some stickers for our helmets too. I highly recommend spending $15 and leaving your skis and ski boots at JH Sports that way you can wear your comfy snow boots to the ski rental place, grab your gear and go. (Especially if you have kids with you) Overall - We had an amazing time and will definitely be back to Jackson Hole - the powder was amazing. Thanks JH for the great service.

Yelp
I went to ski at Jackson Hole over the Holidays and I started having issues with my boots where my feet felt like too tight and they were hurting. I went to this store and got new insoles to help with the arch of my foot, which worked for a couple of runs. Then, my boots felt too big and my feet started sliding back and forth, so they weren't working as intended. Seems like my liners lost some of the cushion and they suggested to add some "padding" to the boot shells. At this point I spent $100 for insoles and labor. Now, the real issue comes when I returned to the store and they charge me again for supposedly some inserts they were adding around the boot shell to tighten up the boot over my feet at least to get me through the last days of my trip. Turns out, now that I am back home, that there is no padding or any additions to my boot shells whatsoever, nowhere in the boots or liners or shells. So literally, I was lied to and charged $25 more for those "padding" that don't exist. Thus doesn't feel right.

Priscilla M.

Yelp
Thank you Jeff (from Colorado)!!! I was having ski boot issues (too big) and I initially brought them into Teton Village Sports the night before where I purchased $250 liners at the boot fitter's recommendation. BAD idea as I had never been in so much pain skiing before and it was impossible to make it down more than 1 run without unbuckling and taking off the boots in between. I wasn't about to waste my ski time in Jackson Hole so I went to every shop in Teton Village for advice and potentially to buy a new boot. Jeff was by far the most helpful and honest with educating me on what to look for for my perfect fit (narrow/low volume). Unfortunately my "perfect boot" wasn't in stock at the store (or any other shop in Teton Village) but Jeff went WAY above and beyond and offered to help me make amends with my painful situation. The next morning, I brought in my boots and Jeff worked his magic. His aim was to just get me on the slopes decently comfortably for the next day, not a perfect boot fit, which was clearly not going to work with my current boots. He took out the horrible brick-like liners, put in a new footbed and re-fitted my boots with extra stock liners they had. All from the goodness of his heart. He also helped with a refund from their sister store TVS who sold me the liners. If it weren't for Jeff, my JH experience wouldn't have been the same. He was definitely my lifesaver on the JH slopes! Justin and the other staff were also very friendly (I clearly went into the store multiple times over the 2 days!). HIGHLY RECOMMEND JH Sports if you're ever in Jackson Hole!!!

Erica W.

Yelp
Thank you to the staff at Jackson Hole Sports! My hiking boots were stolen and they helped me quickly replace them with the exact same pair and even offered a discount for my troubles. Outstanding customer service!!

Yelp
Jackson Hole Sports is located at the base of the mountain at Jackson Hole Ski Resort. One of the larger retail outlets, this shop boasts every JH trinket imaginable - stickers, patches, shot glasses, photo frames.... basically anything you can think of that announces you've set foot in Jackson Hole, WY. Along with the mandatory cheesy pink moose pj's, there is a nice variety of hats and t-shirts that sport the JH logo of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco. In addition to the "JH" wear, JHS also hosts a plethora of mid to high end retail that would have depleted my lifetime savings accounts if I were not supervised by my husband. Separated brand by brand, JHS chose certain color coordinated jackets, ski/board pants, matchy matchy base layers, mid layers, hats and all sorts of related accessories and attractively merchandised the store to the point where you feel sucked in, and can not leave until you've at least had a look. Everything from Patagonia, Marmot, SnowAngel, Mountain Hardware, Roxy and Smartwool, to the uber expensive brands like Hell is for Heroes, as well as a few other brands I am unfamiliar with. And now that I've become acquainted with these new brands, I might just have to make some more room in the closet... If you can make it past the retail clothing, you will enter a large room with fantastic fuzzy outdoor boots positioned next to the ski and snowboard equipment, helmets, goggles, gloves, and anything else you can imagine you'd need to brave the elements on a bluebird sky or heavy powder day. And the colors. The designs. Who really needs a 401K? This is where my husband attempts his rope throwing skills and tows me out of here before I can even say the words, "I need....."

Kate P.

Yelp
Awesome experience here. The lines for ski gear rental moved quickly. My boots were COMFORTABLE. didn't bother me one bit. The gear baskets and ski lockers are so convenient. I highly recommend getting these. Would definitely rent here again.

Yelp
5 stars is not enough for the service I received here. I had some issues with the rentals I had received at a different location and everyone was extremely helpful and went out of their way to make sure I was satisfied and that the process was as easy as possible. Highly recommend!!

kiran k.

Yelp
Keeping in mind these are seasonal ski employees , but still, the worst service ever. I rented skis, boots, poles 2 separate times here, each time was greeted with disdain and a general lack of service. Had to wait each time even though there were 8-10 employees and only me. Boot fitting was so bad I had to return after one run down the mountain, no accountability or apology. Next day same thing, boots wouldn't snap into bindings, returned again, no one said a thing. The person at the help desk was reading a book, the cashier walked away while I was in line and the group in front of me was literally done with their transaction but putting on all their gear. Absolutely without a doubt the worst ski rental experience ever. Go somewhere else, for your own safety if not just for a general lack of knowledge and professionalism .

Yelp
Hubby and I participated in the Bike Park Free for All event. This was our first time mountain biking, and boy did we have a blast. Thanks to JH Sports for organizing-- they had their system down pat: we were checked in, suited up, paired with a bike, and on that ski lift in no time. We did Lucky Charm twice and the Trapper beginner trail once. Kinda scary and thrilling at the same time. I could get addicted to this!

Delta S.

Yelp
I purchased ski boots here and it was the biggest mistake. The boot fitter (Dane?) told me I absolutely needed a customized insole ($300), which turned out to be completely unnecessary for my foot shape. He did a poor job fitting the boots. When I asked him to adjust the boots which were so tight they cut off the circulation, he was extremely impatient and told me to just go ski. I had to come back the next day to get the boot punched and waited 2 hours for it. Even after the adjustment, the boot lacked ankle support which resulted in a calf injury that cut my ski trip short. Overall, complete lack of customer care and simply wants to get your money.

Yelp
I just want to go on a limb here and say these guys are all insanely amazing. David, Cody, Logan, everybody! Just amazing. Renting bikes and having David guide you is a world class experience. Don't miss this.

Yelp
Was in Jackson home for vacation like two girls and I decided to try the downhill mountain bike track. The customer service and the bike rental area was fantastic. They were very helpful and have great personalities. It was a pleasure. Thank you guys for all your help.

Jeff G.

Yelp
We were down a backpack and thought we could pop in here and grab a replacement real quick based on the photos we saw of the shop online. Although they had some things that might've worked, the customer service was so bad, I didn't feel compelled to spend any money here - the guy working the desk was either high or brain dead, which might explain why they have him working in the off-season. It was awkwardly silent in the store and he just kind of stared at us the whole time, probably upset that we interrupted his afternoon zone out session with our presence. On one level I can't say I blame him - it's got to be kind of miserable wasting your days in an empty shop making seven bucks an hour. On the flip side though, the owners should take a hint from the other shops in the village and just close until ski season instead of wasting money to keep the lights on while your staff runs people off. Zero out of five stars.

A. O.

Yelp
It was our very first time downhill mountain biking, and the experience with these guys couldn't have been better. David was an amazing guide- very thorough and kept us excited and challenged. Customer service from Cody and Logan was also above and beyond. Thank you guys so much for making this one of the most memorable parts of our vacation to Jackson Hole.

Yelp
Raced as a kid but had not skied in 2 decades--needed to rent skis, boots and poles. Staff was so understanding and encouraging (thanks again Hanna), and they fit me perfectly with great equipment. I went back after 3 days to upgrade to longer skis and again--a perfect fit. Handing it all in at the end of my week was a breeze--they are located right next to the major lifts at Jackson Hole. Could not have been more pleased...even remembered how to ski by the end of the week.

Yelp
I rented my snowboard here for my two skiing days in Jackson Hole. And honestly, the service is worth four, bordering on five stars. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff that helped me as an intermediate rider to pick out a good snowboard. The price for a two day rent including an insurance was not too steep (about $40 per day). What takes the overall review down to three stars is the fact that they charge a lot for additional services. I rented my snowboard for two days. If I wanted to store it at Jackson Hole Sports overnight, it was $20. Storing your shoes at the store during the day: $5. I understand that they would have to charge people who aren't renting, but it's just so Ryan Air-ish to have charges for these services. I would still rent here again though!

Yelp
Taylor in the Ski Boot department was terrible at his job, steer clear! My son requested an adjustment to his liners, which he purchased the evening prior for $250. Taylor immediately started to blame anything but the liners, including trying to make a case to sell him a new set of boots claiming his were too large. Amazing since we just spent over two hours with Dave (whom was great and took pride in his job), another ski boot specialist in the same department and same location the afternoon/evening prior, during which Dave moved my son into at that time my boots, which were two full sizes smaller than his current. I purchased from Dave a brand new $800 set of boots because he discovered that mine were also two full sizes too big. Our previous boot specialist at Killington last season oversized us both. I told Taylor this information and then he shifted his focus on something else he could blame my son's foot pain for other than their liners. This ended up with Taylor focusing on my son's Killington $250 orthopedic foot bed (same as Jackson Hole Sports sells), which Dave had to trimmed these the previous evening in order to fit his new boots (my old). So Taylor trimmed a small amount off his foot beds with a pair of scissors and then charged my son $45 for what ultimately was a failed solution. We had to return again to this department the following morning due to this issue was still causing my son foot pains in the same area. I requested Tom this time, which is superb at his art, he listened and corrected my son's liners in about 20 minutes, while refining on my boots simultaneously. This store's manager is in need of retraining Taylor in how he conducts business on behalf of his/her store and company. We feel extremely positive about our other experiences within this store, which was many throughout our week there including experiences with Anna and Nick in the goggles department (would have been 5-Star review), but this one with Taylor we feel extremely scammed!

Yelp
I continually receive excellent service from Jackson Hole Sports. I blew an edge and had a massive core shot on my favorite carbon fiber skis, I was ready to throw them away, but Larry and his crew made them like new! My wife has also had repeated great service and as a Ski instructor takes her clients here when they need anything! A+ Service !!! Jason S.

Yelp
We did a full day beginner lesson. The instructor was so patient. It was really well organized as far as people who pick up skiing more quickly and those who needed more help. They gave each of us the instruction we needed for where we were at and gave us challenges as we progressed. We love it!

James O.

Yelp
Kudos to Larry Hartenstein, Jeff Schroder, and the bootfitters at JH Sports. I bought new boots for my 18 year old daughter from JH Sports during Christmas break. She has a difficult foot to fit and we had to make several visits to the boot shop to get the boots right. Larry patiently worked with us to make sure that we had boots that fit her comfortably and told her to come back anytime if the boots were not right. I am a big fan of the boot shop at JH Sports and the team of bootfitters who work there.

Catherine M.

Yelp
I don't write a lot of reviews, but I had to lay down some praise for Dave & Tom in the boot fitting department. These guys are amazing. I'd been wearing rental boots, which are basically a form of torture for my high arches & bunions (for anyone, really - there's a circle of hell that involves rental boots). Dave initially fitted me for a pair of custom boots. He was incredibly meticulous & spent a good couple of hours examining my feet, selecting a boot, and crafting insoles & liners. I returned to him a couple of times over the next few days for adjustments, which he performed equally meticulously & at no extra cost. I still needed a little tweaking on our next-to-last day at the resort, but Dave was out. Enter Tom, who is also exceptionally talented & knowledgeable. He suggested adjustments that I hadn't even considered & spent probably a good hour or so making sure everything was perfect (again at no extra cost). Final result of these two guys' hard work: my boots are comfortable enough to wear as leisure shoes & skiing has become an absolute joy. Trust your feet to these guys & you won't be disappointed.

Aimee L.

Yelp
We rented a mountain bike here for my 9 year old son and had a lesson with Jeff. Jeff was awesome - extremely knowledgeable, patient, personable and easy to talk to. My son was a little scared at first; but Jeff taught him how to keep safety top of mind but still have fun and push his limits. My son was thrilled with his experience and is dying to go back. He feels like he made a new friend in Jeff. Everyone here is all about the adventure, and made our experience on the mountain perfect. Thanks!
