I recently partipated in a 3-day golf instruction program at the Jim McLean Golf School at the historic and stunningly-beautiful Biltmore Resort in Coral Gables, Florida. I highly recommend the program, which exceeded my expectations in all respects.
I am a recently-retired, high handicap golfer. I now have more time to devote to golf and desperately needed a refresher and reset of my game. Rather than do a series of individual lessons I decided I needed a more focused and intensive program and was drawn to the school's 3-day program. I was able to get a discounted rate at the Biltmore in connection with the program.
The McLean program focuses on every aspect of the game and combines it with the use of video and the latest launch monitor and TrackMan technology. There were 12 students of varying skill levels and we were broken into groups of 4 as we rotated through the instruction sessions with McLean's teaching professionals. The training is very detailed and breaks the swing down into its components with intensive body movement training in what the school refers to as "Grind" sessions. The focus of the program is to identify each individual's swing problems and then guide a solution with specific drills designed to address those specific needs.
The senior teaching pros, Glenn, Grayson, Jon and Julio, have, combined, many decades of competitive golf and teaching experience and they get to know and work with every student. The school has been in operation for years and the program is extraordinarily well-structured. It includes lectures on skills like green reading, pre-shot routine and course management and a 9 hole playing lesson with one of the pros playing with three students.
In my academic career I found that the best teachers are those that combine experience, knowledge and expertise with an obvious passion for the subject matter and effective communication skills. The McLean team "hit it out out of the park" on all three. Their knowledge and love of the game is palpable and infectious and they are great fun to work with.
In addition, they get results! By the end of the program I was hitting longer, more accurate and more consistent shots (both long and short game). More importantly, with the body movement drills and swing mechanic advice tailored to my specific problems (all provided in an app containing the videos and drills we used, as well as copious notes taken during the program in a McLean School workbook), I now have a great understanding of how to practice effectively and with purpose and intention, knowledge I can now use to continue improvement in my individual practice moving forward, which is where the real improvement and value will be seen
Finally, they make the program fun. I enjoyed meeting and interacting with my classmates and the faculty and the Biltmore Resort and Donald Ross golf course are first rate.
I want to give a particular shout out to instructor Julio Nutt. I arranged a private lesson with Julio as an "add on" to continue focusing on the problems the faculty identified with my swing. He took me through the bag of clubs and and gave me some fabulous tips and instantaneous video instruction to bring everything we learned in the program together, all downloaded to the app for my future reference.
The program is not inexpensive, but in terms of value received it is a great investment for anyone who wants an intensive and focused approach to game improvement.
