This Secluded Lake in South Carolina Has Caribbean-clear Waters and a Submerged Ghost Town

"For a first-time visit, this outfitter’s boat trips are an easy way to get oriented, with options ranging from sunset tours to the monthly six-hour “All the Falls” Tour that reaches waterfalls only discoverable by boat, and you can also rent kayaks here." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. We took the Sunday afternoon tour (2:30-5:30pm). There were just 9 of us on the pontoon. The boat was very clean and seats were comfy. We brought a small cooler with water and snacks, extra warm layers and hats/ mittens. Also a couple warm throws. We definitely needed the warmth as the sun got low and it was a bit windy. The tour was absolutely beautiful! Leisurely and interesting facts/history about Lake Jocassee. Our skipper, Gary, was very nice and quite knowledgeable about the lake and surrounding areas. He would stop the boat and tell us interesting things along the way. Lake Jocassee has SO MANY little coves with pretty waterfalls! Gary skillfully navigated our boat into each one and we were able to get really close. The leaves were also turning and very pretty in areas. We even saw a mama bear and her cub walking along the rocks at the water's edge. We stayed far enough back not to bother them but sat quietly and just observed. It was a special treat, for sure! It was a most enjoyable and relaxing 3 hour tour! The lake didn't have many boats put on it so this was a great time of year to go...after the spring/summer crowds are gone. My ONLY suggestion would be that the skippers wear a microphone of some sort, because we all had a very hard time hearing what he was saying....and we were in the back with him. I know the 5 in front said they couldn't hear him much at all. Even with the engine idle. Thank you for a memorable afternoon, Jocassee Lake Tours! I HIGHLY recommend this experience to all.

Sheryl/Cheryl was absolutely amazing. We could not have asked for a better tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and educational about the history of the lake throught whole trip. She made sure she was inclusive to all members of the tour. I attended a 4 hr weekday public lake tour, with my daughter and a friend. We were seated with some elderly folks and another elderly couple with their grandchildren. She made sure that not only that everyone was safe but also enjoyed their time on the tour. She made sure to stop at plenty of waterfalls for the people who were not swimming, while also making sure the children (and myself because im a big kid) had plenty of opportunities to get out and swim. She made sure that everyone had fun and that was the best part. I can't speak for the others but the way she made those kids smile was the highlight of the whole experience. I'd like to add the shuttle from the public parking area to the boat was a nice add to the whole experience and I will definitely be booking with you guys again. If I could give Sheryl/Cheryl 1000 stars I absolutely would ❤️ Thank you so much for the experience ❤️

Wow, what an incredible experience on Lake Jocassee from the unspoiled natural surroundings of this lake, to the Emerald Waters and the beautiful waterfalls. An absolutely amazing experience to participate to learn about the region from our guide named Dan. He was a fabulous tour guide and really took the time to explain the history, the plants, trees, loons, growing seasons, and his experience with hiking and exploration. He was very enthusiastic, and also enjoyed being within his surroundings as he also jumped off the rocks, swam in the water and enjoyed the refreshing waterfalls. This tour is highly recommended, and everybody is knowledgeable, friendly and provides wonderful service. The water was so refreshing and almost therapeutic. And I couldn’t ask for more beautiful day!

We did the 4 hour tour in the morning, and what an amazing experience! Deborah did a fantastic job of guiding the group around the lake. She has a wealth of information on the history and nature surrounding the lake. She even used the map to give us a sense of where we were and where we were heading. The tour company has several boats and provides shuttle service on the weekends and holidays. It was a beautiful day! I highly recommend this tour!

Top-Notch Service and Unforgettable Tour Zack was an outstanding guide and made our Lake Jocassee trip truly memorable. The entire experience—from the initial phone call to check-in, the shuttle rides, and the tour itself—was seamless and well-organized. The staff was friendly and professional every step of the way. The lake was absolutely beautiful, and we learned so much thanks to Zack’s knowledge and passion. Definitely coming back with the family. Highly recommend!

Really good tour! I think it was our guide Steve/clark’s first tour or something, but he did a really good job and was really nice.

We LOVE Jocassee Lake Tours. We've gone on a few boat tours in different seasons and with different guides - all of them have been so knowledgeable and friendly. Our most recent boat tour was private for our family and we had the pontoon boat to ourselves. While we enjoyed full rides with others, the price for 5 made it an easy decision to book privately. We beached at waterfalls several times, climbed on rock formations, snacked from our coolers, and tasted local leaves and berries (per our guide's recommendation). The 4 hour tour seems to be the sweet spot for us - 5 was too long. We appreciated the size of the boat, the shade available, and the shuttle into the park. This is one of our favorite things to do in the area. We highly recommend!

Yelp
We did the 4 hour warm season boat tour and we're so happy we did. The ride was slow and relaxing. The guides are naturalists so you learn a ton about the natural history of the lake and plant life.

Yelp
These guys know the lake. Really enjoyed our 3-hour pontoon boat tour around and across Lake Jocassee. They meet and depart from the Devils Fork State Park boat ramp. Captain Rick was a terrific source of nature and history stories. We were super excited to see a dozen or so wintering Loons, an amazing sight here in SC.
