Joe’s Steam Rice Roll Is Opening in Brooklyn | Eater NY

"The popular Flushing rice roll stand is expanding with a third location to Sunset Park at 774 58th Street near Eighth Avenue, with no opening date yet though a July 30 Instagram post says it’s “coming soon.” Owner Joe Rong is known for Cantonese chang fen, with rice cakes produced on an electric-powered stone mill from China, and a simple filling menu of five options ranging from curry fish balls to pork, plus additions like corn and scallions. The business first opened in Flushing in 2017, followed by Canal Street in 2018; a St. Marks Place outpost has closed, and an Uptown location on the Upper West Side opened in 2020; the new Sunset Park spot appears to be taking over the sole New York location of Yi Fang Taiwan Fruit Tea." - Nadia Chaudhury

One of my favorite spots to get breakfast now in Brooklyn. The rice roll (Cheung fun) here are hefty, the ingredients are very fresh, and you get to see the whole process of them being made. The rice rolls had a silky... and smooth texture with the right amount of chew and a decent amount of filling. Oh, remember to add your 3 free veggie topping to the rice rolls... you get 5 choices (cilantro, bean sprouts, corn, scallions and lettuce) to choose from. I like to add bean sprouts for the extra crunchiness!

I am glad I don’t have to drive 1.5 hours to flushing to have my favorite rice rolls anymore! I think there is still a slight difference in texture from the old flushing location but hopefully they work it out. Small space but perfect for a quick meal. Owner was super enthusiastic and cheerful. Our order was messed up slightly, but they offered to let us keep the wrong order and take it to go and they still made us the original one that we had ordered even though we insisted it was fine. Really appreciated that.

Google
rice rolls are one of my favorites so i’m glad this opened here! they’re delicious and i love the shrimp with peanut sauce + soy sauce. i accidentally ordered it “dine in” instead of take out but the employee kindly boxed it up for me without asking!

Just had a chance to try a few of their items. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking to get some rice rolls! The rolls are silky and smooth! Stuffing is generous too. The chili oil is spicy! I love it. I also tried the crepe and I can’t wait to go back for more of that! Regarding seats, there are counter seats that can probably fit like 8 people that run along the wall and window. They take cash and credit card. I’m so happy Joe’s rice roll opened up in Brooklyn!! 🤩I’m a fan!

Google
A delicious veggie rice roll! I will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Google
I am a big fan of Joes Rice rolls but this is not about the food but about the cashier who does not listen. I asked for 2 orders of number 1 on the menu and that is Beef rice rolls and 1 number 4 which is roast pork rice roll. I ordered a crepe as well. What I got was order A and D. The girl didn’t listen.

We love Joe's Steam Rice Roll. First time trying them out was years ago in a small vendor and frequently in Flushing. We've been eagerly waiting for the opening in Brooklyn. Finally, went in today and the lady taking our order messed up the order bc of our language barrier. We spoke English and she spoke Mandarin Chinese to us, and luckily, I can understand some basic Mandarin and responded. But, she still managed to mess up our order. We ordered a beef rice roll (large, extra $2) and a dried shrimp rice roll (comes in ONE SIZE only, $5.99) but she charged us $6 and extra $2 for large?? I wouldn't have noticed this mistake if I didn't carefully look at the receipt again. I ask to speak to someone about this and thankfully, I was able to get back my $2. Next time, if we do come back, probably need to order from the kiosk or speak to someone that can understand English.

Yelp
This is one of the best places for steam rice noodle rolls in the area. Noodles are thin, bouncy, great texture and taste. Also tried Chinese Crepe - very good. I'll be back...

Yelp
So happy to see a Joe's Steam Rice Roll open up in Brooklyn. I went around peak lunch time on a Saturday and it was packed! I waited about 30 minutes for my food after ordering and I knew I had to eat it there to enjoy everything fresh. I also wanted access to all the sauces they offer in store. I got the small pork rice roll with scallions and cilantro, the Chinese crepe with Shuanghui sausage, and a hot soy milk. When my order came out, I was a little frustrated that the lid on my soy milk was not closed properly so some of it spilled and caught me off guard when I reached into the bag. After getting over that mishap, I finally dug into my food. I started with the rice roll and basically inhaled it. It could have used more filling, but the roll was silky soft and the sauces were phenomenal together. I did not expect the Chinese crepe to be that massive. I am not complaining, but I will definitely be more mindful of how much I order next time. I did not love the Shuanghui sausages, but the crepe itself was delicious. The textures and sauces worked really well together. And what was left of my hot soy milk was perfect to wash everything down. The inside is a small cozy shop with about 8 or 9 seats.

Yelp
I was really excited when Joe's Steam Rice Roll opened in Brooklyn, so I stopped by on a Saturday morning to try it. I ordered the Phoebe Special and the Chinese crepe. The Phoebe roll is supposed to come with BBQ pork, shrimp, and egg, and the crepe has pork floss, egg, spicy mayo, lettuce, and cilantro. When I got my order, I was a little disappointed. As I started eating, I realized I might not have gotten the right roll. I ordered the Phoebe Special because I like the combo of shrimp and BBQ pork, but mine came with hot dog instead. There was baby dried shrimp, eggs and hot dog. No pork, so I'm guessing there was a mix up, or the hotdog was supposed to be pork??The rice roll itself was very thin and soft, it melts in your mouth, but something about it felt like it was missing. They do give a big portion though, which is nice. The Chinese crepe really surprised me. The first bite was packed with flavor. It's a bit oily, but so good that I didn't mind at all. I usually don't eat oily food in the morning, but I would definitely order that again.

Yelp
Joe's Steam Rice Roll opened a new location in the 8th Ave area of Brooklyn. It's a nice spot for a quick bite. The rice rolls are soft and fresh, and the soy milk is really good. The staff are friendly and keep things moving smoothly when busy. There are a few stools to sit on, but space is tight, so it's better to grab your food and head out. Overall, a simple, satisfying stop for a quick snack.

Yelp
Fast service. Small inside with limited seating! But ended getting Togo. Tried 2 of the popular rolls and both were delicious! Will definitely come back and try more things!

Yelp
Texture of the rice rolls is good, but the wait is horrendous. There was a guy packing the orders and he looked he's working slow motion...already waited half hour for two small rice rolls...and then the guy takes his sweet time to pack it up...

Yelp
My wife brought me this to try and I can the steam rice roll is so fresh and bouncy. The curry fish ball is so fresh, softy, and again bouncy along with their flavorful curry sauce. This will be our not, new, but favorite spot and will definitely say a weekly visit. Thank you for coming to Brooklyn!
