Food is good, service is also good, i just dislike people smoking from outside and it blows insode. Otherwise a good restaurant to try german/swiss food. Our server was vwry sweet in explaining the food, smiled all the time. This place has the crispiest rösti out of all that we have tried

Suddenly find a restaurant can be still open around 10pm. The waiter ‘Toni’ provides the best service for us, very nice. He gives a big surprise to my husband with a birthday cake Tiramisu. The meals are good taste. It is unforgettable!

Google
We had a great meal at Johanniter! Kathy was our waitress and did a fantastic job of helping us make decisions. Our food came out delicious and the drinks were great!

JUNGSOO PARK

Google
The food is delicious and the beer is great, along with the spacious interior and great service. In particular, the staff member Tonny👍 always makes guests feel comfortable with his bright smile and kindness.

Google
Excellent, attentive service. Good food. Went twice during my visit. Spatzle especially recommended. 1) When it says the Cordon Bleu is XL, it means it 🤣 2) The staff have exceptional language skills, flitting quickly between German, Italian and English.

Ville Sinisalo

Google
Swiss efficiency at its best. Not really suited for someone who wants to chat and linger with the waitress as she left (to come back later) before I could even open my mouth to answer her question. However, the food was good and traditional, and its delivery was also efficient.

Google
Nice friendly staff - busy place but lots of room. The food is hearty rather than gourmet, but just what we wanted. I had pork hock with boiled potatoes and sauerkraut, which was excellent. The Hurliman beer went well with it. I would happily come here again.

I really appreciated this restaurant in the city center of Zurich. The food is very good, and the service is excellent. I really thank Kathy for her kindness. Absolutely recommended.

Yelp
Just ate their tonight. Rosti was excellent, as well as the chicken cordon bleu. Kathy served us and was so pleasant and efficient. We would surely have another date for dinner here.

Yelp
Was very disappointed all around here. Unfortunately, our server was not too friendly and, no fault of his own, knew very little English to help us with our order. I ordered a chicken sandwich with no mayo and I received a very small piece of chicken with mayo on the bread. Thankfully a gentleman , who appeared to be the manager, noticed I was trying to get our server's attention since he never came and checked in on us once our food was served until it was time for our check. The manager was able to get my order corrected and was very friendly and attentive. I definitely appreciated that.

Yelp
The place is always packed (mostly beer drinkers) whenever we pass by the restaurant since our hotel is nearby. Tried this place one time for some authentic swiss food. We ordered their chicken cordon bleu and steak with fries. Honestly, this place has only good ambience but the food was nothing special. I will not recommend this place for their food that was bland and not tasty at all.

Yelp
Came by Friday at 7pm and the place was packed.came next day at 530pm and seats available.one party of 8 leaves and plenty of seats. The chf10 salad was huge and colorful with strips of white and purple cabbage, Carrot slices , romaine lettuce in a creamy ranch dressing. Took us both to finish it off. The chf29 chicken in pepper sauce came with chicken ina creamy sauce along with a mountain of cooked spatz a cooked bread bits. MY chf39 breaded veal was as big as a pizza, but extremely thin .no more than a quarter inch. Ignored the fries and ate the breaded veal. went well with the reisenberry Sauce. wife liked the sauce so much she dabbed her chicken in it. Was going to order the daily special, until the waiter translated it into English-liver! Only restaurant that asked for a tip on the credit card reader in Switzerland as tips included in employee wages.

Yelp
Very cozy restaurant on a great strolling avenue in Zurich! The food was great and the service was even better! Our server, Tony was incredibly helpful, attentive and friendly. Highly recommend

Yelp
Want to have an authentic Swiss meal you should come here, walking distance from the Zurich HB, big portions, I don't know if price should be part of this review is Switzerland enough said.

Yelp
During my vacation in Zurich locals recommended me this restaurant for Swiss dishes. The staff hospitality was great and although I speak Zero Swiss German or German my overall experience was marvelous. The service was top notch, the lady who took care of me made her effort to explain me the menu and also to tell me they had a special menu for lunch. I ordered the chicken cordon blue with fries and the chicken flavor was perfect, the crust was wonderful and the texture was divine. As for of my fries they were delicious! I tried the local beer and it was amazing. I ended up my meal with a coffee americano. The venue is very cozy and welcoming. I will highly recommended this restaurant for the overall amazing experience!!

Yelp
We came in as a group tour for our dinner. It was a special menu request by our tour guide to change up the entree we would be getting. All of us got salad with ranch like dressing, a plate of grilled hash browns and mushroom and beef ragout. It was delicious. The ragout wasn't overly seasoned and the hash browns were lightly crispy. Each table had a basket full of bread but no butter which I was told only appears for breakfast. We finished off with strawberry and chocolate ice cream with a side of whipped cream drizzled with chocolate syrup. The decor was interesting...lots of dark woods and lit up by lamp posts decorating the area.

Yelp
Loved this experience and taste of hearty/comfort Swiss food at Restaurant Brasserie Johanniter! You won't go hungry after ordering a meal here! Friendly and efficient service from smiling staff, patio dining, good beer selection and hearty (not healthy) foods. Overall, 4.5 rating for me, expect to pay avg. ~25-35 francs per entree, 10 francs for soup or salad additions plus beverages . The fave for me was their Specialty house-made Schweins (Pork) Cordon Bleu and Rosti (hash brown potatoes subbed for fries) frites; it was definitely delicious, filling and one of the best comfort meals I've eaten - YUM! The Bratwurst with Onion gravy was also traditional, flavorful and very good, but the fresh made Cordon Bleu with thin Pork rolled with Ham & Cheese, then breaded and fried with gooey cheese oozing out was the winner for me! Lastly, another specialty dish Geshnetzeltes of sliced pork Zurich style in mushroom cream sauce was tried and served with Rosti potatoes - excellent as well! Plenty to pick from the menu to make everyone happy. A mixed salad was a good starter to share, and probably could've shared an entree too. But glad we tried all the dishes, and had leftovers for breakfast the next day! Located in the old city of Zurich with plenty of restaurants to choose, this place gives you a real flavor of the local culinary traditions. Can't wait to go back, ENJOY!

Yelp
Visiting Zurich for a few days and we wanted a simple, Swiss dinner this evening. Staff was welcoming and attentive. Restaurant is typical with lots of outdoor seating. Indoor seating was also available. Ambiance was that of a beer hall. It was lively and a little loud. We had the mixed salads, which were pretty good. For entrees we had the pork and veal, respectively, each with mushroom sauce and hashed potatoes. Nothing special, but taste and portions were good

Yelp
Awesome food. Had chicken and schnitzel in pepper sauce. Really good. Service good. Ambience very informal. Food excellent.

Yelp
Friday night, a 14 hour flight, and I didn't have reservations. After getting rejected by several packed restaurants, Johanniter was immediately ready to feed us. Danke! The nice host guy seated us promptly, but warned us a large party would be sharing our table soon. Luckily they were cool, despite our political and religious differences. Our friendly waitress didn't speak a word of English, but smiling and pointing to what we wanted on the menu worked out just fine. $7.60 for a medium 400ml dark beer, or $5.40 for a small 250ml glass. They also sell 1 liter steins, but I don't like it when my beer gets warm. $26.50 Venison Stew...tender chunks of Bambi and her mom in a rich hearty stew. Comes with the best spaetzel you'll ever have in your life, and traditional picked red cabbage so you get all your food groups covered. $29.50 Deer Stew...see above, except that that meat is even more tender than the Venison. Being that this is Zurich, a very expensive city, and that tax and tip are already included in restaurant prices, this was an overall good meal at a very good value compared to other Zurich restaurants. I would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
For our last night in Zürich, my boyfriend and I decided to check out Restaurant Johanniter for dinner because it was on my list of restaurants to try out, and it was near our hotel. I ordered the speckrösti, since everyone on Yelp was raving about it. This is rösti topped with bacon and a fried egg. And yes, I know it was dinnertime but I figured you can't really go wrong with anything that has bacon, potatoes, or a fried egg. Turns out you can. It was super greasy. I was only able to eat about a quarter of it before I couldn't stomach anymore. I ended up switching entrees with my BF - he ordered the sliced chicken with herb butter sauce, which was served with spätzle. This wasn't bad but again, pretty heavy. It's probably best to order an entree and something lighter, perhaps a salad, and sharing everything. On the upside, the food came out very quickly and the portions are big. We finished off our dinner with a tiramisu (which was probably the best part of the meal) and left with a little doggie bag of the speckrosti.

Yelp
A good Swiss / German / Austrian restaurant with classic plates like Wienerschnitzel, Bratwurst and zürchergeschnetzeltes. Quite expensive, though...

Selina M.

Yelp
Had the veil sausage and a nice cold beer and let me say pretty good! Pretty good location and a lot of option in regards to food! Definitely would return! The burgers looked pretty good as well!

Yelp
Decent cheap(ish) and cheery Swiss food in an unpretentious environment, visited by locals but also at times tourist (given its location in the Old Town Niederdorf). The restaurant is a no frills beer hall in the Old Town. Unlike the much more famous Zeughauskeller (located at bankers' paradise near Paradeplatz); this place has more of an authentic, no frills Swiss hillbilly atmosphere. The local patrons who go here are not bankers but more of an unpretentious and sometimes even downright rude or keeps to themselves crowd. Notable points: - Servers are efficient and decent. - Swiss food here is hearty. If you don't like Swiss food then you won't like this. But if you do then they are ok for esp for the value you get. It's cheap and cheery (for Zurich standards esp comparing to Zeughauskeller) - Decent selection of beers and range of sizes - Location is fab: steps away from Central and at the edge of the Niederdorf.

Yelp
Great Service, Quiet old town feel and Awesome food! Let me began by saying that this place has the best servers we came across during our Swiss travel. We were seated as soon as we walked in and chose what we want to eat really quickly. The waiter was very humble gentleman who even recommended us the places to have best fondue in the town. The restaurant is situated in the old town (awesome location) which was quiet and perfect for chit chatting and enjoying nice whether while sitting outside. The service was "the best" and food came out quickly. The restaurant was cheap compared to other eatries around. We ordered mushroom Rosti, and some salmon Fillet with Hollandaise sauce. My Rosti was delicious, crispy and the mushroom sauce was really earthy and fragrant. My fiance loved his salmon which was really melting the mouth and the sauce was complimenting the fish very well. They had awesome beer selection as well at the reasonable price. I would definitely go back there if I visit Zurich again.

Yelp
A big restaurant with a lot of Swiss and German specialties. I had the spaetzle with ham and onions and it was absolutely delicious; a perfect amount of food. There were a few good options for draft beer as well. I tried the Zwickelbier and the Dunkel and thought both were excellent. I dined on my own when the restaurant wasn't super busy and thought service was just fine. Would come again!

Yelp
Johanniter has never disappointed. It's the Old Faithful of Swiss beer halls. For an authentic Swiss beer hall experience, skip Zeughauskeller and come here for a good meal and good beer. It's a loud, bustling restaurant, once home to a brewery and butcher. You can still see the copper vat lids hanging from the ceiling. Food is typical Swiss from veal liver with rösti to raclette or spätzli-gratin. The food is consistently well prepared and delicious along with being reasonably priced. They even have a decent beer selection including Leffe and schwarzbier on tap, things that are hard to find in Zürich. Service is almost always attentive, professional and friendly. When I think Swiss, I think Johanniter.

Yelp
We had a really bad experience when we went there: We were sitting right near the entrance, but outside. There was quite a bad smell from the inside but we still decided to stay. The waiter came after 20 minutes. We were 4, and when one of us told the waiter that he does not want food, just a drink, he started shouting at us and kicked us out in a very rude way, not even listening to the other 3 of us who wanted to get dinner there. I highly recommend avoiding this place.
google avatar

Simona C.

Yelp
We visited Restaurant Johaniter on a sunny Thursday evening and all the outside seating was occupied. Few tables were still free inside and we were seated to one of them. The waiters were trying to seem friendly, but, as they were very busy, didn't really pay any special attention to us. I ordered roesti with Speck and a fried egg and my boyfriend ordered Spaetzle with pepper chicken. I didn't really like the food. Mine was overcooked and most of the roesti were even burnt (black). Same stands for the bacon. The cheese in between the roesti and the egg didn't taste nice at all, it seemed low quality to me. My boyfriend's dish was better, even if not too tasty. I found it quite flavorless, but it was definitely a better choice than mine. The good part was the fact that prices were very reasonable and service very fast (food came in 10 minutes). However, I doubt I'll go back there soon.

Yelp
If you are lookin for some standard Swiss food, you will be able to find just that here! I was able to get some raclette and the rest of our table tried the schnitzel and the rösti! The restaurant itself gave a very strong aura of the Swiss experience as a Rathaus. The waiters are able to speak French and English a little if your German isn't strong. Dishes run a bit pricy but that is expected of Zürich as a touristic city.

Clara L.

Yelp
this was one of our first meals in zurich we split a schnitzel and a brat it was pretty tasty but i quickly found it to be too heavy the flavor was also a bit bland for me it was an interesting introduction to swiss food but i wasn't really a huge fan
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
First, nothing in Zurich is inexpensive. Now that we are past that, we had a great time. The food was delicious and the beer was outstanding. I like dark beer and this was just short of amazing. The waitress was very helpful and her English was great. We tried the Chicken and spätzle with a creamy pepper gravy that was absolutely awesome. We would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants an authentic Swiss meal.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Quaint atmosphere and really good "home cooked" food with very generous portions. Food was very fresh and delicious. Service could use a little help. Prompt and attentive but not very friendly to non-Swiss guests.

Yelp
One of the overall best meals on our European holiday. Crowded and loud, and table sharing... not my favorite combination - but it was OK. Started off with salads. We found that if we wanted our veggies, we had to order salads, because most of the time, they do not come with any meal. Salads were refreshing. I have no idea what kind of dressing it was, but it was creamy and a little sweet. Very good, but way too much of it. My salad was drowning in dressing. I picked out what I could, but ultimately sacrificed some lettuce to the pool. Veal 'Zurich' style with a mushroom cream sauce and rosti potatoes for me, weiner schnitzel and french fries for hubby. 'Zurich' style is basically thinly sliced, bite sized pieces of veal. Very tender - and perfect with the cream sauce. Very complimentary to the potatoes. I ultimately was dipping my hubby's fries into the sauce when the potatoes were all gone. His weiner schnitzel was also very good. Light breading, semi-thick cut of veal. Also very tender. Very flavorful. The meal was slightly cheaper (than the last restaurant we went to), at about $75. Would definitely recommend and make a return visit.

Yelp
I had never been to Zurich before and wanted a good non touristy place to eat. Staying in an area full of hotels made that difficult but this place looked inviting so my friend and I decided to try it. We were not disappointed. Great beers, great Rotsi and the service was quick and polite. We were seated at a shared table as the place was busy which we did not mind. I would go back and I highly recommend it for dinner if you are looking for beer hall and comfort food.
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
So not sure why the restaurant part wasn't open as it was 630pm but decided to take my chances in the bar area. What a huge mistake!!!!! First, the bartender was drinking on the job. Second, my food arrived lukewarm at best. Third, while I was trying to eat the subpar food I noticed the bartender "servicing" a male customer!!!! I was horrified, disgusted and couldn't get out of the fast enough! Do not go here at all costs!!! UGH!!!
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
The Johanniter is old reliable for me in Zurich. It has the best selection of Swiss foods, some very good beers and wines, is very centrally located, has a warm atmosphere, and usually very good service. And for Switzerland, it is not too overly priced. Heck, you can even get a decent raclette here which although not at all as good as the raclette that some of my Swiss friends' Moms prepare, it still cures my raclette fix for a couple of days. It is located only a couple of minutes from the Hauptbahnhof on the legendary Niederdorfstrasse of the Old Town. Lots of public transit is nearby so wherever you're going for a night out in Zurich, the Johanniter can be en route. Hey you can even stay here after dinner and drink beer too!
google avatar

Jay K.

Yelp
Had a good meal here This is one of several restaurants at the north end of the Old Town restaurant district. I ate with six colleagues so we unfortunately did not have an outside table that day. The service was good and the food was very good and (for Zurich) not too pricey. I'll eat here again next time I'm in Zurich
google avatar

F. P.

Yelp
Just stopped here for a drink along charming Niederdorfstrasse for a break from our sightseeing. I had the local Hurliman Sternenbrau, which is light, highly carbonated beer. Pretty average. On the other hand, I tried the Urtrueb beer was really good with strong hints of caramel. Definitely miss this.

Yelp
Had a 10 hour layover in Zürich and got there early in the morning, walked around a little bit and then I got hungry and decided to come here. The menu was in German but it has English subtext that is very helpful. The food there is expensive!! I ordered a Wiennerschintzel (its not a hotdog by the way) which was 36,50€. Not to mention that it was REALLY GOOD!! Service and food was great and I reccomend this restaurant to anyone that is in Zürich.
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
A solid Swiss restaurant in Old Town. My Swiss friends actually took me here, and the place was bustling when I visited. I got the classic Zurcher Geschneltes and it was hearty and delicious. We also got a plum ice cream dessert at the end (that's supposed to be a very "Swiss" thing), that's essentially plum ice cream drizzled with plum vodka, that I found interesting (not really in a good way). Perhaps it's something one develops a taste for?
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Not bad, but I've definitely had better. Very touristy, in my opinion, but that's fine. I took some friends here because they were from out of town and we were too late to book any other local Swiss places. I've eaten in other traditional restaurants, and the ambience was much nicer - it was bright and loud here (honestly, I think if they hadn't had such stark lighting, it would have been a completely different experience). Service was super busy and seemed stressed out - but no complaints from my end. Plenty of beers to pick from, which was great. Food itself was just so-so: meat was not very tender, and I'd say some of the dishes were too salty. Prices were reasonable, though.
google avatar

Roger S.

Yelp
Went there for some real Swiss fare. Not disappointed. The menu is what you expect. Nothing fancy but exactly what you want when you go for traditional food. Price was great for the portions and service fast and friendly. Nothing fancy but what we would call "urchi." Would return anytime and Glad to recommend it to anyone who wants to get an honest, local traditional meal.

Yelp
So let me start by saying, some of the customers here are the rudest people you will ever meet. There is such a thing as ugly Americans, but drunk Swiss Germans are just as bad -- they will push the door into you on purpose, bump into you with great force and throw elbows, and then yell at you as if it were your fault. It's really intolerable. But I have always believed you cannot judge a restaurant by its patrons, only by its staff, and by that measure this is an excellent restaurant. The food is excellent (if you like sausage, cheese and potato!), the beer selection is excellent and very reasonably priced, and the servers are hard working and efficient. I recommend the raclette, the spaetzle, and bratwurst, which are all as good as you will get in Zurich, and they have Schneider Weisse on tap. This is hard to beat. I would come here again, even despite the hostile crowd.

Daniel B.

Yelp
the middle aged man wearing glasses working this friday night was beyond unfriendly and straight up rude. I wasnt sure if he understood my english so asked him to bring the menu to me just twice and the guy decided to almost hit my face with my menu.I could have thought of it as a friendly joke but judging from his attitude he really was just being terrible.

Gus C.

Yelp
We had the Chicken Cordon Bleu and Chicken in Pepper Sauce with Spätzl. Both were not very good. If you like salty foods, that is what you should order. +Beer selection is good +Service was fairly good +Dinner salad was very good +Main courses were extremely salty and fairly overcooked

Michelle L.

Yelp
We had 4 great dishes here and all were wonderful - it was our 1st meal in Zurich and it didn't disappoint. Flavours were fresh and portions were right - service is prompt and attentive too. I will definitely go back again if we are in Zurich again. For pictures, you are welcome to come see my blog http://baconandjackrussells.com/2013/04/12/memories-from-zurich/

Yelp
It's all about the pig knuckles and the Spätzle entrees. Don't expect much protein with the spätzle though. The meat fell off the bone of the pig knuckle!

Jac B.

Yelp
Went here for a late lunch and sat outside on a mostly sunny day. The dark beer was good, I got a chicken sandwich and the wife a sausage dish. They were good, matched the advertised price. The waiter didn't laugh at our attempts to speak Swiss German. I'm sure it's 90% tourists, but felt like a local place. Lots of people coming by and saying hello to each other. Was relaxing to sit after walking around. I'm probably going back.

David M.

Yelp
The food was good, and the service prompt and courteous. I had a "fitness plate" with a salad and grilled pork; it was really excellent. I also had a house-made tiramisu for dessert which was huge and very good. The prices were reasonable (around 19 chf for the meal, not counting dessert).

Allen T.

Yelp
Atmosphere is old school European. We three were seated at a round table with three others we didn't know. For us Americans it helped that neither of us seemed to know the others language. So, beer hall style. Food was good. I ordered deer and it was quite tender. Interesting experience for a tourist or visitor. Food reminded me of German.

John F.

Yelp
We liked this place. Four of us went for dinner on a Wednesday evening in July without booking. The food was good, the atmosphere lively but hot intrusive and the service excellent. We ate Goulash (tasty) ) , smoked pork ribs (excellent) and shnitzel (also good). Apple Strode for dessert and all not too pricey. We drank schwarzbier which was tasty. I would go back here if I was in the area.
