Here’s where you want to go for a bit more upscale dining experience but not too bougie. Ideal atmosphere for an intimate date or business dinner, and casual enough for getting together with friends. Quality ingredients, ambiance and service calls for a higher prices but still reasonable for the dining experience. We had 2x Don Julio Reposado, shared calamari appetizer, spicy cauliflower side dish, Fish of the Day special, roasted Chicken with Pesto, and shared the owner’s baked Key Lime pie. Total cost including 10% gratuity came out to 1,831 MXN ($108 USD) We enjoyed our meal, atmosphere, service - overall great experience and will come here again

Google
Honestly the best culinary experience in Puerto Morelos! The quality of the meals is out off this world. The best chicken you'll have in your life. The consistency throughout the year is on point. Taste the same now that it did in 2010. Would 100% recommend. Affordable too, 66$ USD for 1 entree and 2 main courses.

We celebrated New Year’s Eve 2023 🥳🎉 at this wonderful restaurant. Service was as impecable, food was delicious and the owner Dora was super sweet and attentive to everyone’s needs. 100% recommend!! We will definitely be returning 💗.

Google
Very very pricey. My guess is it won't be there in a year or two. The appetizers were ok. The main courses were pretty. Green beans instead of asparagus.. The shrimp was very good. The steak was average. The fish was average. Calamari was a bit chewy but the sauce made it decent. The crab cakes were decent as well. The polenta was a bit bland. Not a big polenta fan anyway. The garlic bread was the winner of the evening in my opinion.

Google
This is exactly what we were looking for tonight! It is a classy place, the outside dining area was elegant and tranquil. The service was awesome and the food..... the food was some of the best I've had anywhere let alone Puerto Morelos!! The pork loin was fabulous, the duck was amazing! We had all the duck(tacos, enchiladas and breast), it was incredible. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone traveling to PM.

Oh boy, where do I even begin with John Gray's restaurant in Puerto Morelos, Mexico? Let me tell you, this place is an absolute gem. From the moment you step foot in the door, you're greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere that just screams "come on in and stay awhile." The food? OMG. It's like a party for your taste buds - each dish bursting with flavor and expertly crafted to perfection. And let's not forget about the cocktails - they're so good, they'll make you want to do a little happy dance right there at your table. It's like dining in paradise. Do not pass up the opportunity to dine here!!!

Food, service and drinks were topshelf and easy on the wallet, not to be missed!

Yelp
Our friends recommended this place, so we decided to make reservations for Christmas Eve. It was pretty empty. We got to choose to either sit inside or outside. We sat outside in the patio. The food was good, however the steak wasn't good. It was very fatty and the texture wasn't that good. The risotto was a bit undercooked but still flavorful. Not too bad, but not one of my favorites

Alex R.

Yelp
You can't go wrong choosing John Grey's Kitchen. Everything on the menu is great. The staff and owner make your feel right at home. Don't forget the dessert. The owner's sister makes the best key lime pie.

Yelp
Always a great meal. Dora is the hostess and the food is excellent. We come here every trip to the area.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner at John Gray's with friends visiting from the States. The atmosphere was intimate and comfortable, the service great, the food fantastic and the drinks strong. Everyone enjoyed their meals-between us we had: jumbo shrimp, pesto salmon, pork loin, and surf and turf. We all also had Cadillac margaritas. Every meal was prepared and presented extremely well and we all enjoyed everything. I definitely recommend this restaurant for a fine dining meal and wonderful experience.

Moe M.

Yelp
One of many perfect meals to be had portside in Puerto Morelos. Incredible food, service and ambiance. Save some room for the Creme Brulee - it's exquisite.

Nancy J.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. It's one of my favorite places in Puerto Morelos. They have great daily specials. Perfect for a intimate dinner or a group of friends.

Dwain M.

Yelp
This place charged my credit card $175.00 for 4 meals. They charged in pesos and I didn't notice until I returned home and checked my credit card. The food was good but not that good! BEWARE when charging.

Sharon H.

Yelp
Always a good meal at John Grays. We sat outside and asked for some bug spray as the mosquitoes were out! After a quick spray down we had wine, the wedge salad, the lobster mushroom risotto and the pesto chicken. Topped it off with some excellent key lime pie! Enrique was a very personable server and was helpful even hailing a taxi for us after dinner.

Patti L.

Yelp
Our party of six went to John Grays Kitchen to celebrate a birthday! The food was spectacular, as the birthday girl said" I want to lick the plate!" Every one of us loved our meal, the appetizers and the special made Oreo cake! Thank you for making our celebration memorable ! We will be back Friday, we want to enjoy the food once more before we head back home it was that good!

Eric B.

Yelp
Excellent food and excellent service. It was a great environment and Dori was a fantastic host!

Geri M.

Yelp
Best prepared fish in town! The catch-of-the-day was delicious, rice and vegetables cooked just right. Dora is delightful. Don't miss it when you are in Puerto Morelos!

Joanne R.

Yelp
Was reluctant at first but a local resident made us promise to visit and it was the best decision. The restaurant is perfectly situated about a block off the central Square with impeccable service, delicious cocktails and the food had us from the minute we walked in with delicious smells that were followed by even better flavors. The garlic shrimp and the shrimp Mac n cheese with truffle oil were out of this world and we will be dreaming of these plates. I had them modify my plate to be grilled veggies with the shrimp but the mashed potatoes were also creamy and delicious.

Toni T.

Yelp
Super cute restaurant a few blocks blocks from where we were staying at the Fives hotel with and outdoor seating, and a really romantic vibe at night. Everything we was delicious--definitely elevated cuisine, with very reasonable prices. Don't pass up the shrimp mac & cheese with truffle oil. It's so much more than that! My husband had the chicken breasts with pesto--huge servings. We split a gigantic salad with arugula and pears--Two weeks in Mexico and we were craving something fresh and green. Dona Dora is the most charming hostess ever! After a few minutes of speaking with her I felt like we were old friends. We will definitely come back the next time we are in Puerto Morelos, which I hope is soon because I really want to try the duck enchiladas!

James E.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance. Outside seating was pleasant at night. The Corn chowder was light and flavors reminded me of sweet potatoes. I ordered the dishes that others Yelp'd about. The Shrimp Mac n cheese wasn't as gooey as I'd expect. It was more like fettuccini sauce. It tasted good though.

MsTamC G.

Yelp
We stumbled on this place...it was very very good. My family and plan to return when we come to the island.

Patrick S.

Yelp
The best restaurant in town, FABULOUS FOOD STEAKS SEAFOOD, excellent in every way , we love this place , back for a second night and you gotta try the "tostada Tuna " it's a huge fabulous appetizer that's to share ( Texas size) as always this place rocks!!! Best Tuna ever

Julie W.

Yelp
We come here once a week when in Puerto Morelos. The food is excellent and the staff is fantastic. The mango salsa is something I'd like to bottle and take home. Our daughter is still raving about the Key Lime pie she had last year and is hoping it's on the menu tonight. If you're not within walking distance take a cab as parking is almost nonexistent in this area.

Matt R.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner here! Great ambience, fantastic service, and a delicious meal. We split everything, and they even made us extra. Also one of the best carajillos I've ever had!

Emmie L.

Yelp
Been coming to John Grays since I was a little girl! Food is to die for, service is great, and the staff members are fantastic.

Gina W.

Yelp
Absolutely the best in Puerto Morales. The goat cheese pizza is DIVINE! Dora is the perfect hostess. Not our first visit and won't be our last. Never a thing to complain about. Don't leave without dessert either!

Julia H.

Yelp
Love love this restaurant! My second time and not my last. Food, drinks and staff are amazing!! Dora is a gem!

courtney a.

Yelp
John Gray's kitchen is culinary deliciousness. Very creative menu with twists and turns at every bite. The staff was very accommodating and the hostess was so warm and inviting. This was our 2nd trip to Puerto Morelos and our 2nd trip to this restaurant. My bueno!

Dorese C.

Yelp
This place had such amazing food and was such a nice atmosphere. We ate here once for lunch and then came back a few days later for dinner! If you're looking for great food in a perfect environment, look no further!

J L.

Yelp
BEWARE OF THE POLICE! After a completely pleasant meal at John Gray the local police waited a block and pulled us over for 'speeding.' Demanding a $100 bribe or they'd confiscate our passports. If you can avoid driving to this restaurant, do so. We managed to get off with a $50 bribe. You may not be so lucky. UPDATE: the owners of John Gray went FAR above and beyond customer service; the police returned our $50 and the offending officer was fired. We also had a great 2nd meal with them. We recommend the duck & Mac and cheese.

Bob D.

Yelp
We had dinner here recently. I have to say, the restaurant, once the culinary leader in PM has become dated both in interior and menu. I would also add that the service was not what it once was. The tuna tartare app is still great. The shrimp and crab cake not so much - mostly bread. There was ribeye special that was good. The salmon was uninspired at best. The wine list has very few options and most are pretty generic. PM has come a long way in the last five years - it's time for John Grey's to catch up.

Lydie V.

Yelp
We came last year for dinner and had a fantastic experience. The dish we loved the most was the spinach and beet salad. Environment and wine were great. Unfortunately today our last meal in Puerto was awful. We ordered beet salad, hambúrguer, guacamole. Salada came without beet, the bacon and oil from it made the greens hot and gross. Hambúrgueres were full of oils dripping from the bums. Fries with no flavor but also with lots of oil. We no longer recommend this place. Not sure if the owners change or what happen.

Mary L.

Yelp
Another memorable dinner at John Gray's Kitchen by Dora in Puerto Morelos. My favorite: grilled shrimp with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a tasty sauce. I don't usually have alcohol, but I indulged in a Merlot. For dessert, brownie with ice cream and a cup of coffee. Dora makes us feel as if we were guests in her home, and we can relax, take our time, and enjoy good conversation with the excellent food. A little more pricey than our usual places but not off the charts and WELL WORTH the difference.

Yelp
This is the best place in town for breakfast or a special lunch or dinner. They're closed Sunday and Monday, but I'm here for breakfast almost every other day. The huevos ranchero is baked and the best I've ever had (and I have had lots of great huevos ranchero). The French toast is made with croissants. It's super light and comes with a berry compote. It's great. The most expensive dish on the menu is about $5 US (100 pesos). Valerie works in the morning and she's a wealth of information. She sent me to the dentist and hooked me up with a great snorkeling trip. I also got to charge my phone while I waited for my Airbnb check in. For dinner, I've had the fish (fresh caught) and it came with asparagus and another vegetable and a mango salsa. It was very nice. I'm having my farewell meal here. I like fish tacos on the beach but it's nice to go upscale too. You could spend a little more than $20 on dinner, but the catch of the day is about $15. Great place. Great people (Dora, the owner, is a regular also and good to know), great food.

Cathy E.

Yelp
What a delicious dinner at John Gray's Kitchen! The lobster risotto and goat cheese pizza were terrific appetizers. We loved the Roquefort encrusted pork, mahi maji, and duck enchiladas. Dora was a wonderful hostess and made our vacation to Puerto Morelos so perfect!

Mike S.

Yelp
Probably one of the best recommendations we received while visiting. Cozy restaurant with warm welcoming staff and a menu that almost makes it impossible to choose. We had Avocado pizza - wow Black mussels - double wow Shrimp with a clamata olive paste - Skirt steak and fish of the day - grouper. The food was simply amazing with perfect balance of seasoning and spice. Highly recommend.

Yelp
What a great find. My wife and I love good food and our 5 star resort was letting us down big time. We went for dinner and had such amazing service and food, so much so that we booked a second dinner a few days later ($40 taxi be dammed). Lara is an amazing host, so honest and welcoming and we cannot thank her enough for making us feel so welcome. This place was that highlight of our trip.

Brittany K.

Yelp
I have been coming to Riviera Maya a few times each yeah for about 10 years now. There has not been a visit yet where we did not make it a point to go to John Grays. The restaurant is tucked away in a quaint little side street of Puerto Moreles, just minutes from Riviera Maya. The atmosphere is welcoming; the workers and especially the owner even moreso. The crab cakes and the seafood mac and cheese are two things that never seem to leave the menu, and thank God for that! They are phenomenal. This most recent trip, I don't think my boyfriend lifted his head once from the mac and cheese. For the entrees, I typically go for a seafood plate (for obvious reasons, like being at the beach) and I am never let down. The cocktails are handmade, their dirty martini's are incredible and their service is fast...but not too fast, they let you enjoy your meal. The desserts are also exceptional, and after mentioning it was my Dad's birthday on my most recent trip, the dessert came without asking; which was awesome. I wouldn't keep coming back to this place time and time again if it wasn't 6 out of 5 stars. Would 110% recommend.

Yelp
We ate 2 of our 5 dinners in Puerto Morelos at Dora's John Gray. Duck enchiladas, lobster, tuna, corn chowder, or avocado pizza...every taste was delicious. The bartender spends most of the night squeezing limes and lemons, so all the margaritas and mojitos are so juicy fresh (but a bit light on alcohol, as are most drinks in town).

C A J.

Yelp
Just got done having dinner there & we had the shrimp Mac & cheese & the pork loin - Both were excellent! Edwin was our server & he was a pleasure! Highly recommend John Gray's Kitchen/Restaurant when you are in Puerto Morelos. It's one street over from the main drag, so remember to head one block over!

Frank M.

Yelp
I have been coming to John Gray's since they opened 15 years ago and tonight was the usual 5 Star experience. Starts with Dora the lovely charismatic host/owner who makes everyone feel so welcome. We like to sit at the bar, and Cobra the bartender always gets us feeling comfortable with the famous Margarita's. I had the Fish of The Day "Amber Jack" a local white fish with veggies & roasted potatoes. My wife had Tuna Tostada and we both can't stop raving about it. Being from Boston we know great Seafood and this was better than home... so Fresh and Flavorful!! Dessert was a treat too Hot Homemade Brownie topped with a Cold Vanilla Ice Cream. I washed it down with an Incredible Spanish Coffee. We will be back again and again and if you haven't been here you should make it a point to try this time tested treasure!!!

Kelley B.

Yelp
We were super happy with the meal several people had chicken fajitas and they were excellent and very well presented I had the chicken enchiladas and they were delightful salads were good and even the burger was very tasty. A musician came by and played Beatles music and we gave him some money.

Maiyer X.

Yelp
The food was delicious, I had the truffle oil mac and cheese with grilled shrimps. The creamy truffle oil cheese sauce is to die for, however, the penne noodles were a little under cook. Beside that, I couldn't get enough of the creamy cheese sauce. It has a different flavor to it. I can gurantee that this is NOT your average mac and cheese. Other than that the lemonade was yummy and everyone else loved their dish. The brownie was fresh, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It was topped with icecream and chocolate syrup. The atmosphere is clean and the velvet chairs are soft and very comfortable. The owner came around the resturant greeting and talking to the costumers. The waiters are friendly and speaks english. This is a must eat place in Puerto Morelos!!!

Rakesh A.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner. Drinks were top shelf. The catch of the day was fresh and the duck enchiladas were very good.

Donna F.

Yelp
The BEST meal I've had in Mexico! We stopped in with the whole family after seeing the cute place off the street. My son and I split the rib eye steak grilled in garlic butter with mashed potatoes and green beans and the grilled shrimp over truffle Mac and cheese. Husband had the grilled shrimp with mashed potatoes. My brother in law had the salmon with rice. All dishes were unbelievably delicious! What a gem! I'm so happy we found this and can't wait to come back when we are in town!

Darius V.

Yelp
Outstanding Food, Impeccable Service and Nice Location. We had appetizers, entry and dessert. Everything was delicious.

Stan C.

Yelp
We ate here quite a while ago and I don't remember what I had when we first came but I know we were happy with it and that brought us back. We started with the crab cake appetizer which was delicious. The sauce was spicy and very tasty. The skirt steak was Perfectly cooked and tender and prepared with a delicious sauce. I have the catch of the day which was amberjack rubbed in chili sauce. The fish was very meaty and delicious. Very enjoyable meal and well worth coming back.

Wendy R.

Yelp
This is a nice place with a great menu. My husband and I enjoyed our overall experience. The margaritas were delicious. The food was above average, however my fish was overcooked, which was a disappointment. We did return for brunch and had a better experience than dinner.

Todd S.

Yelp
True to word the huevos ranchers was baked and amazing. Best ever. Wife had french toast and it also was fantastic. Air conditioning was a big plus as every other restaurant we tried wasnt. You get used to that. Anyway food was amazing and would return for breakfast if staying longer and didn't have others to try.

Dan L.

Yelp
Meh. Don't believe the hype. Ambitious menu but below average food for NYC prices. You're better off going somewhere like El Nicho or even tacos.com...

Hughg J.

Yelp
Really great. Different decor than anywhere in town, great food creatively prepared. Being from Sonoma, we give it the seal approval. One more star if they could crank up the AC.

Craig A.

Yelp
Ate dinner at John grays kitchen yesterday. The restaurant was recommended by our travel agent. Smallish restaurant but clean and has some character. There is outside seating if desired but it overlooks the street. Everything we ordered was delicious from appetizer to dessert. We ordered black mussels, tuna tostada, and crab cakes for appetizers. All three were flavorful and healthy portions. For entres we ordered the special steak and the salmon. I preferred the salmon. It was nicely seared and topped with a pesto. Service was attentive and the whole meal was very reasonably priced. I plan on returning before the end of our stay.

Karen F.

Yelp
Excellent! We stayed at an all inclusive not far from here, the food where we stayed was not so good and we found this place! We arrived at 6:30 and no one was here, I thought oh no, we almost didn't stay but I used the bathroom and it was spotless, I was unsure because it was kind of empty but not for long, this place filled up fast and OMGGGGGG, the staff was excellent, service was awesome, and the food was sooooo great, we came back two nights later! The only problem is we didn't find it sooner:)... The owner made a point to run after us and thank us as we left, she was wonderful too! This is a great place! Thank you for sharing your restaurant with us, we definitely will be back! I would give it more stars if I could! I am a germ and clean nut and easily get ill in Mexico, so I am so cautious, and this place passed all my neurotic ways:), thank you again! See you soon! Karen

Pam F.

Yelp
So nice, we went there twice ... in 7 days. Love, love, love this place. A little bit of the UWS, NYC in Puerto Morales Mexico. The decor is cool grey shabby chic and the food is awesome. The service is attentive and excellent. Had their fresh fish (twice) with a chipotle sauced potato and fresh veggies for dinner; another of us had the truffle oil mac and cheese with shrimp. Another the duck special. All of us were really happy tat we stopped in (on a lark). The goat cheese and truffle oil pizza appetizer was scrumptious and so were the mussels and the mushroom strudel specials. Finally, enjoyed two of Dora's awesome desserts -- a smooth and creamy creme brûlée and an even more amazing cheese cake with apples. If you are in Playa or Riviera Maya or even Cancun proper, it is totally worth the drive. My only complaint is that the road outside the restaurant is really chewed up. But I guess if they fixed it we would not have been able to score a table without a reservation. So then again, maybe don't fix it....
