10 Best Places for Shopping in Bali | Condé Nast Traveler

"Canadian jeweler John Hardy has been a bamboo-building pioneer in the years since he commissioned Malaysian architect Yew Kuan Cheong to conceive this 90-foot tall cathedral structure in a rice field, which is surrounded by Balinese umbul-umbul saffron-hued flags. This is Kapal Bambu, the showroom at the John Hardy compound in Bali. The Cinta collection consists of one-of-a-kind masterpieces that highlight the artisanal talents of Hardy's Indonesian craftspeople; for instance, chokers embellished with spiraling diamond- and sapphire-encrusted naga serpents." - Cynthia Rosenfeld

I just experienced the Workshop tour with my guide Ketut. The setting is so aesthetically-pleasing, with gorgeous use of bamboo, the color of marigolds, stonework and even some rooftops in a Sulawesi style. The journey of the making of this jewelry was lovely to see. There is such fine artistry and precision noted. There is a lovely shop on-site, as well, if shopping appeals ! I thoroughly enjoyed this visit and my gracious hosts.

Visiting the John Hardy Workshop & Boutique in Bali was an unforgettable highlight of my trip. The moment I arrived, I was struck by the beauty of the space—both the serene natural setting and the stunning design of the boutique itself. It perfectly reflects the artistry and craftsmanship that John Hardy is known for. What made the experience truly special was the chance to see every step involved in creating their exceptional jewelry. From the initial sketches and design concepts to the meticulous handcrafting process, I gained a real appreciation for the skill, patience, and creativity behind each piece. Watching the artisans at work was both inspiring and deeply meaningful. This is absolutely a must-visit if you're looking to bring home a unique and breathtaking reminder of your time in Bali. This isn’t a place for cheap trinkets; it’s a celebration of Balinese heritage, tradition, and artistry. Each piece draws inspiration from the island’s natural beauty and rich history, making it far more than just jewelry—it’s wearable art. I highly recommend the John Hardy Workshop & Boutique to anyone seeking a truly memorable and authentic Balinese experience.

I attended the amazing Master Class excursion to John Hardy’s Workshop at Kapal Bamboo Boutique in Mambal Village, from my hotel, Alila Seminyak. Upon arrival I was greeted by Putu and her hospitality would represent the entire day. Putu gave me a guided tour of the production, and it’s just so cool to see in person, the care and detail that goes into each and every piece, by hand!! During this immersive experience, I had the privilege of working closely with highly skilled artisans, witnessing their meticulous craftsmanship that goes into creating awe-inspiring handmade pieces. Sulis was the hostess for the class with the biggest smile and best laugh! She was patient and caring in teaching me or trying to bring out my artistic creative side! Kuya the wax master is a genius (with the best laugh and smile too) and can turn a brick of wax in magical beauty. I will cherish “our” wax design and memory of making it together. Plus, I got an amazing pencil with his wood work design. Nike the designer was able to turn my stick figures scribbles into something beautiful that I would want to wear. She made my honey bee vision reality. I was able to partake (and I mean fully welcomed with open hearts and arms) in John Hardy’s renowned Long Table Lunch, which was traditional Balinese feast (!!) and was able to meet and lunch with the vibrant community of artisans and staff. What an amazing experience!! And of course I had the help of Putu to make a jewelry purchase so I can always remember my trip to Bali!! 10/10 Would recommend and would love to do again!! ♥️

We stumbled upon this place while staying in a villa just around the corner. If you happen to be around the area I recommend taking the time to visit this beautiful place - if not for the jewelry it is worth the visit for the wonderfully constructed buildings and the nice garden! We were greeted with a cool welcome drink and got an introduction in the history of the brand as well as an explanation of all the products. I ended up getting a bracelet as a nice daily reminder of the good time we had during our vacation on the island 😀

I had a wonderful experience at John Hardy Kapal boutique. I have just completed the workshop immersive experience, with Dewi, Sulis, Kuya and Benny! It was such a beautiful creative experience to make my own design, with support from such talented artists. And to get the chance to try the signature chain weaving technique. And it was amazing to see the pieces being made by hand behind the scenes. A beautiful day. 🙏 🙏 🙏

So much to say about John Hardy as a brand but also the staff here at the Boutique ensured I had a wonderful authentic experience, just like they are. I've joined the team for a family lunch and it was beautiful getting to know their journeys amongst the brand. Had the honor to meet these beautiful women Putri, Reza, Sulis and Lisa amongst others. As well as the Boutique Manager who gave me such a wonderful warm welcome. Wonderful staff at John Hardy. I am absolutely in love with all the pieces ❤️ The hard work all by hand behind the scenes was the most amusing part of my day!

A great overall experience to see how this amazing brand is made. An experience you should not miss if you come to Bali. Ira walked us around the facility and was very good at explaining the production process and history of the brand. Thank you to the John Hardy team for welcoming us to the long table lunch and this full experience. Gautam
