This authentic Irish pub has earned accolades for its exceptional food and warm hospitality . For many in our group, it was their first experience in a traditional Irish pub, and the atmosphere did not disappoint! I opted for the beef steak, accompanied by crispy onion rings and hearty chips. The portion was generous, and the flavors were satisfying—a true Irish welcome on a plate. Of course, those who indulged in the local brews found them to be the perfect complement to the meal. A fantastic start to our Irish adventure, filled with good food, great company, and the unmistakable charm of Galway.

Google
Great food and service. Was a busy night and we were told from an overly apologetic server that we would have to wait 10 minutes. It wasn’t that long. Had the salmon which was excellent. The whipped goat cheese was also really good. I like goat cheese usually, but this even didn’t taste “goat/cheesy”.

Google
Food was awesome. We were very lucky to get a table without reservation. Oysters were very tasty but my personal highlight was the Brownie. Highly recommend.

Google
What an iconic Irish pub! We can definitely see why John Keogh’s Gastropub is award winning! It is a beautifully decorated Irish pub in Galway’s Westend. It has an incredible atmosphere and absolutely lovely staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our starters: whipped goats cheese and pub bravas . My only criticism would be that the whipped goats cheese could use more toasted mixed seed crackers. Our mains were equally delicious: the mussels and burger. My husband rated the burger as one of the best he has ever had. The portion sizes are great and the dishes are reasonably priced and what one would expect for an award winning gastropub. We will definitely be back!

Google
Looking for excellent.lamd.in Galway, come here. Plenty of other choices on the menu, but I highly recommend the lamb. Best I have had in a long time. The creme brulee was a great finish. Brings your family,.friends or anyone else. Lots of beer on tap and they have great mixed drinks!

Megan Bopp

Google
The food, drinks, and service were great! Our group had lamb, pasta, a burger, and salmon and we all enjoyed our food. The cocktails were good too!

Google
Lovely atmosphere, perfect little pub. Not too loud. Loved our food and drink!

Google
We had a great dinner here after our Aran Island tour. Short walk from the docks and were able to grab a table at 6pm on a Sunday night with no reservation. Fish and chips enjoyed by a few, others had a burger or supreme of chicken. Onion rings were very good! Sticky Toffee pudding for dessert was tasty!

Yelp
If you want an old time, classic looking wooden pub with exquisitely high food prep and service, just find John Keogh's. Went as a table of 4 on a July Saturday and 100% needed reservations. Place is booked but service remains elevated. Our table was greeted quickly. A nice drinks menu. We shared wings and a whipped goat cheese appetizer. The Galway Bay mussels are a wonderful entree. Ample, like insane, amount of mussels cooked perfectly in a large table pot. Brown bread and fries. Daughter lived her sirloin. The Scottish salmon over green pea risotto is beautifully presented and utterly delicious.

Yelp
Excellent meal at this restaurant and service was equally as good. I had the Roast Supreme of Irish chicken, and it was a fantastic comfort choice. Plenty of drink options to choose from as well. We were here on a Saturday night, and the place was jam-packed, but despite the throngs of people we were still able to hold conversation.

John H.

Yelp
Solid pub food and lively atmosphere. They were able to accommodate our group of 6 and a baby with a reservation on a Saturday night which isn't easy to do. The food was quite tasty. The lamb shank was incredibly tender and a hit with the crowd. The winter root soup was nice and mild (in a good way). The mussels were fine but I think I would have gone salmon or lamb if I were to do it all over again.

Siobhan B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Their roasted chicken was so good we were dissecting it trying to figure out how to make it at home. Also a plus, the back room was cozy and quiet so we could hear one another talk. The staff is excellent. Nessa our server was excellent. Thank you Nessa.

Samantha F.

Yelp
Order the seafood chowder and the Galway Bay Mussels! You will not be disappointed. Great traditional pub atmosphere

Gareth J.

Yelp
Food missing time and love. Feels like person who cooked didn't have time or energy to make sure everything was hot. Had great pint of Guinness. Atmosphere was cosy and full of life. Bald manager there was rude and unprofessional in any way.

Carin K.

Yelp
Kate was a wonderful server! She was very attentive and the restaurant itself was warm and inviting. My Galway Bay mussels were the best I've had in a while and the chicken and burger were enjoyed by my husband and son. We had Dingle gin and tonics that were perfect. Highly recommend this fabulous restaurant for any visitor.

Amy H.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner last night at John Kepgh's. We were served by Nessa and James who were both darling and so helpful. The roast chicken dish was to die for! We also had the lamb and the steak and both were cooked perfectly. Highly recommend when in Galway!

S P.

Yelp
Ambiance and drinks were nice. Food, other than burgers, was mediocre in comparison to other offerings in town. Would not return for a meal. Did not enjoy the mussels in cream sauce. Service was a bit slow, but this was likely due to the parties and marathon taking place on the day we visited.

Chad S.

Yelp
We were seated quickly on our reservation time. It took quite some time to get any service. Our group had either the burger & chips or the fried chicken & chips. Food was delightful. We did have to wait for drinks and condiments for a good portion of the meal. The group behind us had some of the most vulgar language and was clearly over served. Disappointed as we had young kids.

J C.

Yelp
Best meal we had during our trip to Ireland. Just go, you will not be disappointed. Sirloin with peppercorn sauce was outrageous. Wife had the fish and chips and loved it. Nothing negative to say. They even squeezed us in without a reservation on a busy night.

Dwight R.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I enjoyed the lamb while other people on my table ordered the Seabass (also delicious), fish and chips, and a burger. Very close to local bars. I look forward to coming back again.

Brent L.

Yelp
I made reservations for 9:15 and showed up at 9:00. I was told the kitchen was closed, but they were still serving drinks in the bar area and was told to grab a seat at the bar. I told them we had reservations, and they immediately showed us to the dining room. So let that be a lesson to ya' - make reservations! The temperature was pretty warm inside. After this little SNAFU, things went pretty smooth. We had the best server in the world. She was FUN and she knew the menu upside down and was able to answer all of our questions. We ordered the duck spring rolls as an app (€8.00). There was plenty of tasty duck tucked inside these rolls, with sweet, poached plums on the side, served on a bed of crispy kale and sprinkled with a bit of coarse ground black pepper. I highly recommend them (and I'm not a huge fan of duck). I had the traditional fish and chips (€17.00) which were decent, but nothing to brag about, and not worth the steep price. I found fish and chips to be exactly the same anywhere in Ireland or in the U.S. It included a chunky tartar sauce on the side and a small side salad. PLENTY of food to fill you up, but just no "wow" factor here. It was typical fish and chips. We also ordered the hand-rolled gnocchi (€14.50). It was served over a tasty spiced tomato sauce, with pesto, and a few roasted red onions, all drizzled with gorgonzola cheese, pesto. It was a great combination. Drink prices: A pint of Bogman Irish Amber Ale (which I didn't see anywhere else in Ireland) was €6.50 - I highly recommend this one if you like amber ales. Bottle of Corona is €5 Jameson and Ginger Ale is €7.30 My advice to you - don't try the fish and chips at an upscale place. Try a hole in the wall joint, or even one of the fast food joints available in Galway.

Yelp
Our group used the set menu, so options were a bit more limited. My steak was OK, but not quite at the level I was expecting. The accompanying pepper sauce was excellent though. The staff was reasonably attentive. My issue was the noise - more tables appeared to be full, but for a Wednesday night, it was quite loud - forcing our group to have to talk quite loudly, even to people sitting right next to us. Overall, it's OK, but not in my Top 10 restaurants in Galway.

Katie C.

Yelp
Best fish and chips in Galway!!! Nice atmosphere and in a fun area. We didn't like the burger at all. Come here to get their fish and chips!!

Tami F.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere. Had the lamb and it was superb. Worth the short walk from the Latin Quarter.

Dieter G.

Yelp
this was a great experience. The chicken was fantastic. Our server was very friendly. Best meal I had in Ireland.

Arnie Q.

Yelp
We found John Keogh's on a busy Friday. We could not have been happier. The food was exceptional. There was some good standard pub food, but also some more refined dishes. The 6 hour lamb should was fantastic. The salmon was very good. The beef croquettes and goat cheese appetizers were very good. And we loved that we could also get oysters. The service was exceptional. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Overall, we were very happy to have found John Keogh's.

Rocky P.

Yelp
Steak was great, service is excellent and the Guiness a perfect pour. My new Galway spot for a nice meal.

Jill H.

Yelp
Food and service just ok. Drink choices endless. Overall just so so. Don't think I'd return.

Lindsey R.

Yelp
One of the best meals of our week traveling from Dublin to Kilkenny to cork to Killarney to Galway! The finest crafted meal for sure - beautifully constructed, fine sauces, and PERFECT fish with crispy skins paired with great wine and beer. Worth every good review. Recommend getting early as understand it gets busier/harder to get in after 7 but we went near open on a Monday and had the place to ourselves. Sometimes we get tired of traditional fish and chips and other Irish staples but this was such a lovely alternative!

Maysam N.

Yelp
During my time in Galway, I decided to check as many restaurants as I can, order the classics: Fish and chips, pint of Guinness, and bowl of Chowder. Their chowder was the best so far. The fish was very good. Chips size is small, so keep it in mind when ordering. The most amazing thing about John Keogh's restaurant was the environment, it's just amazing. My review will not be completed without mentioning the great friendly staff.

Chris C.

Yelp
Fantastic pub with upscale pub fare. The lamb and the chicken were delicious! And they can accommodate a number of allergies. Would absolutely recommend, and would definitely come back here if I'm ever in Galway again.

Yelp
Food was great, bartenders and waitress were wonderful, manager was like a drill sergeant. We were at the bar well before our reservation and were asked to move to our table. Quickly surrounded by a stag party of 20 or so. Way too many f bombs and extremely loud for us. One guy in the toilet vomiting by 6:30. Asked to move to the bar or somewhere to finish our wine in peace. We were granted this privilege. We were young once and understand the desire to let loose, but not in the mood to partake particularly after making reservations a while ago. Letting our family, who is coming in a few weeks, know to steer clear. No wonder turnover is very high in this joint as all were on edge.

Mark R.

Yelp
We had 3 different meals and an appetizer and everything was delicious. Wait staff were a delight.

Para D.

Yelp
Fantastic service and food! We made reservations for two and we're kindly greeted upon arrival. We started with drinks and while enjoying them had 5 different servers stop by the table to see if we wanted to order. We had fish and chips and sea bass for our entrees and both were delicious. Only strange thing was that this was a full bar but they wouldn't make cocktails outside their limited cocktail menu but that's all good because the wine and beer were just fine.

Don O.

Yelp
A very nice, classy Irish pub. Our food was excellent and the service very friendly. A good selection of beers on tap. This is set on the west side of Galway which is quieter than the sometimes rowdy "downtown".

Cecilia R.

Yelp
Nice environment for a drink was OK. The service was kind rude and the were not mussel that is supposed to be in the menu. For a drinks could be a nice place but not to eat

Lance O.

Yelp
It was our lucky night, we had been turned down by 3 other highly ranked restaurants in the area because we did not have reservations. John'S was moderately busy and was able to get us in - in 10 minutes. Best meal yet, on our 2 week vacation! My son and I had the dry aged steak, medium rare with the garlic butter sauce... it was cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful. My wife had the pasta and felt the same way . Excellent meal and service. So glad the others were too busy !

John M.

Yelp
We stopped into John Keoghs for a light dinner - we both enjoyed the ambience of the venue. It has great decor and wonderful woodwork with glass dividers that split the pub creating, intimate settings. The addition of candle lighting to include 10-15 in the adjacent fireplace gave it a worm ambiance. We enjoyed some beers, seafood chowder, and the soup of the day with fantastic brown bread. It was a great, light fare.

Bob S.

Yelp
This was our best meal in Ireland and a few of our group thought that it was their favorite in all of the UK. Super friendly staff, warm cozy atmosphere, and awesome food. Even the other patrons that we met who were arriving for a holiday party were fun to talk to. Highly recommended!

Kiki K.

Yelp
Awesome pub in Galway. They were super accomodating with a party of 5 + a toddler. Great staff - very friendly. The food was all delicious. Good fish chowder, great dinner of mussels. Nice beer selections. It was busy and that is always a good sign when you are from out of town.

Elizabeth U.

Yelp
Food is served up to 9:00pm(?) Came in around 8:40. We were promptly seated although the waitress didn't seem too happy (sorry!). We were hungry for some appetizers. Ordered the shrimp appetizer and Irish Bravas (fries with chorizo). The shrimp was fried but tasted fresh. The fries were a perfect blend of crispy and soft on the inside. Only downside was the amount of mayo on it. I'm personally not a fan. After scraping off the mayo, I really enjoyed the chips/fries with the Irish chorizo. Food was fast. And prices here are very reasonable. Def recommend!

Yelp
I had a stellar evening at John Keogh's this past June. In Galway for the first time, I could not have felt more welcome, from the moment I was greeted at the door, til the time I said my goodbyes. The ambiance was warm and comfortable, with great lighting, and several "snugs" throughout the dining area. Staff was top-notch and friendly without being overbearing in any way. We started with a dozen delicious Galway oysters. They were as fresh as can be, with clear, briny liquor, and sweet, firm meat. Delicious. My husband got a dry-aged steak which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It came with plenty of chips, and they even brought him some "red sauce" (aka ketchup) without any fuss. I had a pan-seared sea bass served over house-made gnocchi. It came with asparagus, salicornia (a bright green, sea vegetable), and a bit of parsnip puree. Everything was perfectly cooked. The bass had nice crispy skin, but was not dry or overdone. The veggies were all crisp-tender, and the gnocchi was light as a feather. Our dinner guest had the house-rolled gnocchi that came with an assortment of veggies:roasted cauliflower, watercress, and french beans, with a bright mustardy sauce and a pub salad on the side. Each one of use was perfectly satisfied with our meal. I have already recommended this place to several of my friends in the States, and made sure they knew to go here when they visit Galway. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Filomina W.

Yelp
This is a lovely cozy pub just a short walk away from the touristy area of the Spanish area. I found it less frenetic and crowded as a consequence, although we did arrive on the earlier side, closer to 6:30pm. We had the fish & chips, and they were delicious. They also have a large selection of beers and cider. Highly recommended!

Brad M.

Yelp
What a find! We had the roast chicken breast (one of the best chicken dishes I have ever had) and the fish and chips which were excellent. Don't miss out on the peanut butter dessert - it was amazing! The service was incredible - Kate is an absolute gem and one of the best servers I have encountered (not to mention brilliant so be sure to chat her up). The atmosphere is lovely and warm. The pub is located in a more "locals" area of Galway which is fantastic. We were able to walk out of the door and find live music in multiple locations and there were very few tourists. Tip: They take reservations (we made them online) which was a big stress reliever for us when heading out to dinner in a busy town.

Scott M.

Yelp
This was the best meal we had in Ireland! Very nice people, good service, and fantastic food. Special thanks to Teresa, with no H, and everyone else here. We'll be back!

Colby B.

Yelp
Incredible Pub/Restaurant in Galway. We all tried something different & then passed the food around the table 4/4 entrees were Amazing. The Beer, we'll as you can imagine based on the food, GREAT BEER as well ;-)

Audrey H.

Yelp
Simply put the food was amazing. Had a long day at the cliffs of Moher and we're looking to try the Galway oysters, not only were they great everything we tried was! Go here!

Caroline M.

Yelp
This place is great! I got the entree pot of mussels and it was so much food for the price and amazing! Great vibe and service as well!

Margaret G.

Yelp
We were there late so by the time we got there, they were out of fish and chips and we got the last of the oysters. This just told us they serve fresh! The food was great and the staff was gracious! For you vegetarians, the gnocchi was great!

Robert A.

Yelp
Best Fish & Chips ever. Had mussels as starter, very delicious. All in all very enjoyable location

Dennis J.

Yelp
Nice friendly place for a drink. We stopped in for a quick drink before dinner and struck up a conversation with the bartender, who let us try a few things before ordering. It has a nice ambiance and has good drinks, and I'd come back for food or more drinks if in the area.

Gene D.

Yelp
Flat out best meal I had in Ireland! Had the roast chicken breast and my wife had the fish and chips. Wait staff was wonderful. Ordered a Manhattan and it was the only good mixed drink we had in Ireland. (Elsewhere stick to either a Guinness or a whiskey.) I would highly recommend, but call ahead as they were fully booked the night we went.

Deanna U.

Yelp
We had a VERY enjoyable lunch at John Keogh's. I had the muscles which were excellent and my husband had a burger that he ejoyed very much. The portions were on the large size which made us feel we were getting great value for the price. The server was so helpful with my special dietary concerns taking the time to talk to the chef and come back with suggestions. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming with the fireplace burning. The menu looked excellent with some common pub fare mixed with some new and original items. Plus the place was super clean, bathrooms too (which were also beautifully decorated). I loved everything about the place and highly recommend.

Taylor K.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. I had the seafood soup and the slow cooked feather blade of beef (essentially slow cooked roast) and both were delicious. My husband had the fish and chips and enjoyed it as well. Our server was so sweet. Overall, a great experience!

Jasmyn J.

Yelp
Great service, great food, off the beaten path of the Galway strip. But so worth it! Good food, good service, and friendly faces.

Adrian C.

Yelp
Classic Irish pub, just happens to have great food too. Great pint of Guinness. Highly recommend.

Liam D.

Yelp
Good wine, fast service, excellent food! We had the fish and chips as well as the steak and the burgers. The best comfort food meal of our trip to Ireland! Would recommend to anyone visiting and looking for food that a family of all ages would enjoy.
