A Review of The Hoxton, Downtown LA

"A nearby fitness facility partnered with the hotel that offers guests access via an all-class, all-day pass for $25; it’s an easy four-minute walk from the property and serves as the on-site gym alternative for visitors seeking workout classes and equipment."

Outstanding Experience with Ed and Sandro! I had an amazing experience signing up for my membership at John Reed Gym thanks to Ed and Sandro. From the moment I walked in, they were both incredibly helpful, professional, and welcoming. They took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all my questions, and made the entire sign-up process super easy and stress-free. Ed was very knowledgeable about the different membership options and made sure I got the best fit for my goals. Sandro’s positive energy and friendly attitude really made the experience enjoyable. You can tell they both genuinely care about helping members feel comfortable and excited to join. Huge shoutout to Ed and Sandro — they truly represent what great customer service looks like. Highly recommend joining this gym — the vibe, the staff, and the experience are all top-notch!

This gym is fantastic! The equipment is top-notch, the atmosphere is motivating, and the facility is always clean. The best part, though, is the staff—especially Sibrie! She is incredibly helpful, friendly, and always goes the extra mile to make sure everyone feels welcome and supported. Highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a great workout experience!

John Reed Gym is one of the most unique gyms I’ve been to. The music sets the tone – loud and energetic – and the modern design creates a motivating space to train. It’s not just a gym; it feels like a place designed for people serious about their workouts but who still want a great atmosphere. The equipment is top-notch, with plenty of options for any workout style, and the group classes add something extra if you’re looking to mix it up. The staff has been professional and easy to deal with, which goes a long way in making the overall experience smooth. If you’re looking for a gym that’s got a great vibe and delivers on both style and substance, John Reed is worth checking out.

Google
Very friendly staff soon as you walk in that spark up conversation. The CSR that opens on the weekends helped me get a membership immediately after I got a gym pass to workout. Great ambiance with state of the art equipment. Dope music selection that won’t make you think twice if you left your headphones at home. Spotless clean locker rooms and showers. Janitorial staff is friendly and very helpful! Surprisingly not as congested with traffic in the mornings. Definitely recommend!

⭐☆☆☆☆ Disappointing Experience with Management After searching for a gym last December, I found John Reed Fitness - but unfortunately, my overall experience ended on a very disappointing note. I had to move out of the Dallas area to live with family while preparing for a major surgery and to save money during recovery. Before moving, I called to cancel my membership and was told I needed to come in person. When I showed up, the front desk staff told me that was incorrect and that there had been a lot of new employees who might have given out wrong information. Because of that delay, I was now being charged for another month of membership I wouldn’t be able to use. They provided me with management’s email, and I reached out explaining the situation. I received no response to my original message, only a follow-up stating that due to the promotion I signed up for, I was locked into a one-year contract. I explained that my move was not by choice and that I was in the process of getting a life-changing surgery, but I was told that “life happens” and they would only consider ending the contract if I moved more than 25 miles away. I provided multiple screenshots showing that my commute during the hours I would’ve been able to attend (after work) would be during peak traffic times, and each time it mapped between 28 and 30 miles away. The manager ignored parts of my email, contradicted previous responses, and after several phone calls and voicemails over three days, I received no return call. When I finally heard back, they sent a screenshot showing 24.1 and 24.8 miles and said that meant I didn’t qualify for cancellation — a difference of less than one mile. I explained again, and was met with short, dismissive responses. If you want a gym that only thinks of you as a number and not a person, this is the one to go to.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this gym and had an overall positive experience. The gym had a great atmosphere with a good vibe and excellent lighting for selfies, instructional videos, and training. I was impressed by the cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities, including the beautiful bathrooms. The front desk staff had great energy and were very friendly and kind. They were also knowledgeable about the gym's offerings, which was helpful. The gym offers several smith machines and workout styles, including hiit areas with CrossFit functions. The equipment was well-maintained and diverse, which made my workouts more interesting and engaging. The music was great, and I didn't even need headphones. The gym played upbeat music, which helped keep me motivated during my workouts. It would be helpful to note that the music hits different genres but overall very good quality music is being played at all times. Although the gym offers classes, I attended a few and did not recommend them. Unfortunately, there were only three people in each class, and the instructor wasn't challenging enough. However, the gym offers a variety of other workout styles that more than made up for the lackluster classes. Overall, I highly recommend this gym. The crowd is young and motivated, and the gym has a great energy that will inspire you to push yourself harder. If you're looking for a gym with clean facilities, friendly staff, diverse equipment, and great music, this is the gym for you.

Google
Best Gym in the DFW area. Gym is Cutting-edge when it comes to design and the gym 80 equipment. Staff is always friendly. Gym is open from 5 am til midnight every day. Great lighting to take pics to post. Would definitely recommend to out of town visitors.

Google
Great gym, club like ambiance. Good selection of workout machines and free weights. Plenty of space to work out. Great selection of cardio equipment, clean, friendly employees. Primarily a weight lifting/cardio gym so not meant for those looking for basketball/pickelball courts, pool ect. I wished they had an Inbody analysis machine though, my last gym had it and its was a great way to track progress so that's a bummer. Been going to gym for a few months now. Still great gym. Well maintained, cleaned, some great machines. 8/6/25 -1 star Previously had said the music was great. It seems more recently, there has been more generic off the radio hip hop/rap music being played. It’s unfortunate as the music created an atmosphere and culture unique to John Reed. But I’ve noticed in the evening the music is increasing vulgar songs one after another.

Yelp
Favorite gym in Dallas and believe me I have been a member of them all. The price, cleanliness and equipment is top notch. Left for a few years because of distance, tried 3 other gyms and ended up coming back. If you're worried about how other people look and what they're doing, you're at the gym for the wrong reasons as I see from some "negative" reviews. Also, I like the music they play as opposed to bringing AirPods.

Yelp
Came here specifically to take Trey's spin class and I am so pumped that I did! It was one of the best classes I've taken in awhile! Trey seemed very experienced and knowledgeable as he was hitting all his counts ... to a LIVE DJ!!! As someone who has instructed spin, this can be very difficult when you don't know what the DJ will play, so the fact that Trey took everything in stride and kept us having fun and sweating was amazing! Not to mention he was very helpful for bike setup for those who needed the help. Speaking of help, I accidentally put my stuff into a locker in the women's restroom without realizing how to lock it/open it and so I went to the front to ask for help. Tiana gladly said she would help me, but I differed until after class-- where I met Taylor who was off duty and in Trey's class, but graciously helped me get into the locker. I really appreciate her helping me because she could have easily just instructed me to go to someone currently working, so that really stood out for great service. The overall vibes of this gym were very aesthetically pleasing.. it's a very Instagram-able gym but the people I encountered here made it a great experience. Thank you again to Trey, Taylor and Tiana for making my first time at JR so great!! Next time I come back, I want to take Taylor's class in addition to Trey's as I've heard Taylor's is a great workout as well! Cheers!

Yelp
As someone who used to live in Dallas , who has visited the likes of the former DavidBartonGym in New York and other cities back several years ago, I'm extremely happy this gym vibe has made its way to Texas. As their idiom goes: "it's not a place, it's a feeling," and nothing holds true more. Finding John Reed Fitness Dallas is honestly a minor undertaking, since the main entrance is actually on the ground floor of the multi-level parking garage - and if you're not paying attention, you might just miss it as you drive in to park. The gym itself takes the entire basement level of the garage, and is a huge space to explore. After greeted by the very friendly front desk staff, I made my way into the main areas of the gym. As you descend the stairs, you first see the massive cardio floor, followed by your typical weight machines, cable machines, and free weights. With a separate room dedicated to squat racks and straight/angled fixed barbells, there's no shortage of equipment here. In addition, they've also got a cycling studio and fitness studio. Since I only had one day in this gym since I was visiting the area, I didn't have a chance to check out any of the classes. That said, day passes to John Reed Dallas are only $30, so worth it whether you're there to work out on your own or take a class as many local fitness studio are around the same price. The equipment is all very standard yet upscale, and as mentioned earlier plenty of it. The locker rooms have full amenities with one notable exception - while workout towels were available they do not provide shower towels. It's a great gym to get a solid weight-focused workout where the vibe is on point. Will definitely make this my local go-to when needing a good workout in North Dallas.

Yelp
10 de 10 lo malo que nunca encuentro la puerta Me gustaría que me ayuden con una foto

Matthew H.

Yelp
Great gym but you can forget listening to your own music or anything on your phone even with noise canceling headphones. They crank the music even when there isn't a DJ, so you can forget listing to anything you enjoy. Too bad because other than gym bags and tripods all over the floor the gym is great

Shiloh C.

Yelp
Been going to this gym for over 2 years. The front desk is always welcoming and polite. The facility is always clean and spotless. The trainers are great with showing you great form, professional, and give you a great workout. Machines are rarely broke. and if they are, I have not seen one broken more than 24 hours. Been very happy at this gym and don't plan on switching any time soon.

Yelp
Best gym ever!!! People complain a lot about the music in this gym but for me personally I believe it gets me going! I love the aesthetic atmosphere of this gym! Everything is so modern and the community is very kind and respectful of each other! The whole area is amazing and I hope to get a membership here soon!
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
Their customer service team is rude and not graceful. They will not refund. They are avoidant at disclosing the refund process. I would have asked in person if they were going to be such a pain.
google avatar

Charles C.

Yelp
Douche vibes ... guys with no shirts on. Machines were nice looking but confusing AF and I've seen every machine ever since the 1980s. Loved the squat rack areas so I told me son to come check it out with a 3 day pass (same pass that had just gotten me in that day) and some ass denied him at the door. My son would have probably liked it and taken his shirt off lol... but that place will not survive with the way they are running it.

Yelp
Some people come here for the music, others come to work out. Everyone comes for both. The equipment here is second to none, which is what is important to me. They have an array of free weights and weight machines, as well as a plethora of cardio equipment (ellipticals, treadmills, stairsteppers, etc.). Some days can get kind of crowded, but generally speaking, you have access to everything that you need. Great gym!
google avatar

Anthony E.

Yelp
Probably one of coolest, cleanest and aesthetically pleasing gyms in Dallas. The staff is mad cool and super helpful. Things rarely break and if they do, it's fixed within 48 hours. The only con is I wish the content creators wouldn't film during peak hours but that's any gym.

Christian P.

Yelp
This place is terrible. Where do I start? Crowded gyms equipment broken parking lots when your phone gets no signal there. My husband got a new card and I went to to go renew my membership and they wouldn't even allow me to renew my membership because of legal issues when I signed up with my husband's card and we share the same last name this place is ridiculous for $120. You get no sauna, no steam room you get a lousy white towel and a shower with a little lotion is shit. It's so dark in there you can't see nothing. The people that work. There are lousy college kids only care about the bill and not about the place if I could get this place a 0 would.
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
AWFUL! Music is so loud you can't hear yourself think. Live DJ playing songs with profanity laced lyrics. The equipment is nice, but there are so many people taking selfies and Instagram photos, it makes you gag. The comparison to Equinox is laughable. Equinox At least has more class. This place looks glamorous, but it's just cheesy. The strobe lights going off in the middle of my set was distracting and I just hated it overall. Would not recommend to anyone.
google avatar

Coleton D.

Yelp
Updated to 3 stars due to the lack of any sauna or steam room. Also, never seen a luxury level gym that doesn't include shower towels. Hopefully that changes soon! Beyond that, gym is great!
google avatar

Parker L.

Yelp
I enjoy this gym. The biggest con is the music, that thing is blasted way to loud... if it wasn't for that, 4 stars.

Yelp
Update almost a year later. Gym is great, in terms of location, accessibility, equipment and management. They do a great job of making repairs when needed and keeping the gym clean and in good shape. The issues that still remain are noise levels with DJ on T/Th/Saturday and the incessant use of tripods to film one's workouts. It is annoying, abrasive and inappropriate. They get in the way. Also is annoying is the guy's constant flexing in the mirrors, and the chicks who are there to date, not work out getting in the way DYING FOR ATTENTION. If you are single or a douche- this is the gym for you. If you are a diehard freak about working out consistently, this is ALSO the gym for you. It is an eclectic group of people- you have to know when is the best time for you to come to get a workout in- depending on the crowd you want to be around. One last complaint...the towel service ALWAYS runs out.

Winston W.

Yelp
No air conditioning in locker rooms. No towels. Management seems inept. Lots of folks taking selfies. All the shirtless guys posing makes it more similar to La Bare strip club vs a health club. Shirtless and shoeless people working out on equipment is a health concern as skin diseases are communicable. Workout machine/equipment are nothing more than petrie dishes of germs at this place. Best to workout at a health club that places clients' health as the priority and not the JR brand that seems to be more strip club vibe.

Dd B.

Yelp
Music above 90 Decibels can cause hearing loss this gym Music is at 110 Decibels many future law suits because of gyms music to loud some attorney will own this place because of permanent ear damage

Lis R.

Yelp
Recently signed up and these are my thoughts- Pros- a variety of equipment Great customer service Live DJ 5a-12a hours Very clean No initiation fees Cons- very busy during peak hours Lots of empty space/needs more machines Will try it out for a few months. If I feel I have to wait around a long time for machines I'm canceling membership.

Yelp
I'm iffy about this place. It LOOKS amazing. The vibe is fun and the employees seem nice. It's not a full service gym. They don't appear to have towels for the showers, no steam room, no sauna. The cardio equipment is very very basic. The actual weight of the weighs on the machines seems off. It's definitely not the same weight at my gym (lifetime) everything looks clean, well maintained so far, and the music is great. I appreciate the huge amount of squat racks. The instagram people are annoying with their tripods but if you pop in earphones and ignore them you're fine. It's 1/2 the price as other "fancy" gyms in dallas so all in all it's worth it.

Jacinda M.

Yelp
The gym membership is 130$ monthly which is perfectly fine but you cant bring any guests so paying that 130$ is not worth it at all

Steve C.

Yelp
I thought the gym was nice with great equipment but they let people workout here with their shirts off. One guy's body odor was so bad that some of us left. I would not consider joining here until they change that policy. It's not sanitary.
google avatar

Yelp
Comparisons to Equinox aren't accurate; John Reed isn't a luxury facility... at best it's "a very seductive LA Fitness" and even LA Fitness offers a bit more value for money (pool, steam/sauna). JR is a "gymmersive experience"... wannabe "influencers" bring their ring lights, tripods, and squads but always leave their shirts and basic courtesy at home. JR is a never-ending Instagram moment (by design) w/ influencer wannabes doing light workouts between heavy filming; a lot of douchebags who are more "in the way" than they will ever be "influential". Show up camera ready b/c at some point, like it or not, you WILL be an extra in the background of someone's vid or photo and the locker room isn't off limits to this. I joined JR before it opened to get the $75/month rate (instead of $100+ per month now). When it opened it was barely busy the first few weeks... then the onslaught of buzz caught on and it became *the* place to be seen (more so than to workout for many of the members). The space is typically too crowded most times with too many late teen and early 20-somethings just screwing around, posing, and keeping people from using equipment they need. The complete lack of "gym etiquette 101" coupled with the self-entitled laziness of Highland Park teenagers who seldom re-rack plates and dumbbells and just leave them on the floor proves that money doesn't equal manners or class. While the interior of JR's space sets it apart from other gyms (in Dallas) the concept of dimly lit, music-oriented gyms with visual interest/elements and cozy niches isn't new or innovative: JR simply copied the playbook of the late, great David Barton Gym chain from the late '90's / early 2000's. On a positive note: The staff and management team at JR are very friendly. The equipment is high quality and the room with FIVE squat racks was great! The hours (5am - midnight) were convenient (but LA Fitness is now back to closing at 11pm most evenings). Other complaints about the music being deafening volume levels are spot on... and if it was a day when the music leaned toward rap with vulgar lyrics it made the experience that much worse. If you're over 30 years old this place will lose its draw for you sooner than later. To sum it up: the staff, the location, the hours, the equipment, and the design (unique to Dallas) are all definite pros to join JR... however... the music (sometimes terrible... almost always deafening), overcrowding, sometimes scarce parking, and disproportionate amount of douchebag members: huge cons to joining.

Pedro A.

Yelp
Great experience coming in and getting to see everyone workout. Front desk very nice helping with a one day pass thank you to Fabian who help facilitate the expertise great customer service and positive attitude!

Precious T.

Yelp
I really liked this gym until I came in and had a horrible interaction with the girl working the front desk (black girl, brown braids Friday at 7) she was rude and dismissive. I broke my phone and had to download the app again, it wouldn't allow me to log in so I asked for some help very politely, I'm not sure if she doesn't like people that look her or not but she was dismissive and said I don't use the app. Ok so what am I supposed to do, idk. I'll be choosing another gym thanks to her
google avatar

Jens M.

Yelp
No. Don't do it. I was a member for 2 months and left pretty quickly. On the positive side the staff was friendly and helpful, the machines were well maintained, and the space was clubby just like they advertise. The music is great. The locker room is nice and clean. On the negative side (and why I left): when it's busy it gets really stuffy in the smaller areas. It's also a little dark in some of the areas (the club thing). There is no dry sauna, steam, whirlpool or pool. Now for the gross part: on each visit I noticed guys working out shirtless on equipment. There are no disinfecting wipes available in the entire club. When You walk in they hand you 1 small towel. You are supposed to wipe your face and wipe down the equipment with that same towel. Usually when i got to a machine it was still damp with the last persons sweat. When I said something to the front desk they offered me a second hand towel. Ugh.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Easily a 5 star review! As someone who lives in oklahoma theirs not a gym like this nearby without having to drive to Houston or go to California. I really love the different aesthetic and the ambiance of the place. I wouldn't make this my daily gym as theirs a lot going on but looks like a good community to make fitness friends + network while getting a lift in!
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
This gym was a Gold mine when I found it during the pandemic. It was very clean and hardly ever packed. I love going as soon as they open to avoid the crowd, but for whatever reason they still keep the music blaring even if there are five people on the gym floor. I would definitely like for them to save the loud music for later in the day so that it does not feel like I'm having heart palpitations while I am trying to work out. Aside from that, you definitely have to be aware that this is a influencer gym and that people can come in and film whenever they please. It is cool as long as they don't disrupt, but there are some influencers and wannabes who love hogging up all the area and I think they should be regulated. Maybe they should say ours are only allow so much equipment to be brought in for filming. It would also be nice to have a notification to the members ahead of time if they're going to be filming some thing like a Netflix series so that we are not blinded by bright lights or cut off from working out, or even being able to avoid the camera all together because not all of us want to be in front of one while we are working out. Just a note: they do not have towels for showers.

Yelp
I have been going to this gym when it first opened and thought it was perfect but unfortunately the greed of this gym took over and tarnished my experience here. I had originally signed up before the grand opening for a locked month to month rate which was great but I was blind sided by a money tactic they did. According to them I canceled my membership via email (which I never did) and now...I have to be under contract for 12 months for them to honor that rate. Do you think I'd want to stay with a business that is selfless and money hungry? The gym staff brushed my concern off and told me current prices. Not sure is this is b/c prices go up in July. This totally left a terrible experience with John Reed/Gold's Gym. Not worth it all. The equipment was to starting to get old and have terrible wear and tear. There really aren't any amenities for this facility (sauna, basketball court, pool). There's too many patrons with tripods and faux influencers. I'll take my business elsewhere.

Matthew R.

Yelp
Nice gym. The staff they do have needs to talk less to girls and spend more time putting weights back and upkeep the gym. Every time I go I only see them flirting. Could be a great gym if they hired the right people. I only go because they are 3 minutes from my home. So much potential with the right staff.

Tommy N.

Yelp
Contacted them through email. No response after 3 weeks. Trash service. Probably reflects on how they take care of their gym too...

Krystyn M.

Yelp
The most stunning fitness space you'll ever see. This place is head to toe luxury. Not to mention, the group fitness instructors are fantastic. Shoutout to Taylor, Oliver, and Diana for the kick ass workouts!! If I wOuld ask for anything to be changed, it would just be hand drying towels in the bathroom and for more of the group fitness classes that involve weight lifting to be after 5pm. I can't always make the noon time. Also, the temperature can be warm sometimes especially in the fitness class studios it's humid. The music is also amazing so half the time I don't even use my headphones. So so glad I joined!!

Chris A.

Yelp
General Manager Alex is extremely attentive to members. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Very clean facility. Video lessons on each piece of state-of-the art weight training equipment. A very good value. Covered attached parking garage with an elevator is a real plus.

Hamid F.

Yelp
very unfriendly customer service, the worker in front would not allow to even peek through if you dont sign a weiver. i did not plan to go inside, and i did not wanted to fill their lenghty waiver. he was so rude with a unpleasant language that if it the membership was free i hesitate to become a member., not because of his unfriendly manner but beacause of being hiried without screeining. this review is for the owner or managent team to at least consider hirring more educated and trained staff for the positons. i was a loyal gold gym member for longer than 10 years. you just lost a new member.
