This could not be in a better location since it is just about 90 yards from the harbor and it is near two great art galleries, several great places to eat ( Fish Beach for great seafood, the Island Inn for great dinners and breakfasts, Night Night Fatty,s, and more). Beer and food at the Monhegan brewery, a shot distance up the hill, are also great. There is easy access to the scenic hiking trails from the House|The accommodations at the House are very comfortable and make sleeping easy. A kitchen has everything you need. The owners have been very helpful and pleasant . My friends and I have used the Harbor House for about 4 or more trips so we are experts in this location||The only problem with Monhegan is that we always want more time to spend on the Island. Do some homework before you go because the are many things you might miss.||||

Wonderful location, breakfasts, hosts, accommodations. I’ve gone to Monhegan for years and brought friends from Texas this time and we only had time to stay 2 nights so didn’t rent a house. John and Susan were perfect B and B hosts and cooks. Right across from the Island Inn and steps from the dock and ideal views of the harbor. The breakfasts were over and above and kept us full all day. Thank you both. |ML Hannay. Portsmouth, NH

The Harbor House is very close to the ferry dock, which is good. It is across the "street"(gravel drive) from the Island Inn which offers an excellent restaurant.||The Harbor House is well maintained, though a little on the rustic side. We had a "private" bathroom, which we reached by walking down the hall. Queen bed was reasonably comfortable. Room was small. Common areas had old/worn furniture.||The caretaker/cook/cleaner/hospitality person John is very nice and cooks an excellent breakfast.||I suppose everything is expensive these days. At the price, I guess we expected a more updated experience. But then, it's Monhegan Island, right? Lucky they have electricity now.

I recently spent 3 nights in the John Sterling Harbor House. The room was very comfortable. The bathroom is shared by 2 rooms And was very clean. The breakfasts were awesome. Susan, the owner, was very pleasant and welcoming, in addition to being a great cook. She even came down to the ferry to say goodbye when I left. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone visiting Monhegan.

Enjoyed a one night stay at the John Sterling Harbor House. Lovely room reflecting the island's unpretentious rustic charm. As noted in the prior post, the full breakfast mentioned in older postings is no longer offered(website needs updating to reflect this change) however a more basic breakfast of coffee, orange juice and oatmeal was fine for getting my day started. Best location on the island with memorable views of the harbor. Would definitely stay here again.

I have stayed here several times now and always look forward to coming back! Susan is a great host and makes an incredible breakfast. She was happy to accommodate my husband’s need for a gluten free diet. The Adirondack chairs overlooking the ocean/harbor are quite the spot to sit and enjoy an amazing sunset or a cup of coffee in the morning.

Great location, wonderful staff and a great breakfast make this a must stay historic farm house! Jon will share history of the island while making you fresh pancakes with real maple syrup. Would definitely come back and recommend to all seeking basic, solid accommodations with island charm!

This was by far the best B&B we stayed at during our whole trip in Maine. Susan is a wonderful host, and made us feel right at home, and cooked the best breakfast's we had the entire trip. Monhegan Island is an absolute gem and Susan's cozy establishment makes it even nicer.

Yelp
Vivian did it again. Another great island adventure. This one on Monhegan. The John Sterling Harbor House was our base of operations. This is an ideal spot. It's just up from the ferry dock. Breakfast is fresh every morning. Your right at the center of island life with out it being on top of you. The microwave and fridge give you the option to eat on the cheep. However the temptation of the food at The Island Inn just across the road may be hard to resist. The Sterling house puts you at the center of the Island and its history. It is still owned by the original family going back eight generations. Tranquil down east views are out every window. What a great fined.

Yelp
Love: the pair of Adirondack chairs to behold the priceless views of the sea at sunset. Bonus: homemade, freshly baked, warm blueberry muffins every morning. My husband and I stayed with our cocker-spaniel this June (2017) at the JSH Inn. We got along very well with Susan, who is funny and amiable - she even offered to pet sit our dog so we could have an elegant dinner right across the road at The Island Inn! She was an amazing host. Maybe next time we will get to meet her husband Mark. The JSH inn is very conveniently located both to the harbor and to Main St on Monhegan Island. The almost 300-year-old inn was gut renovated in 2005. It is neat and tidy, authentic in design, pro-conservation and cheerful. Susan was incredibly hospitable and helpful, as her knowledge comes from generations of living on the island (during the warm part of the year). In the rooms, you will find authentic touches including old photos of the inn and windows dressed with charming lace curtains. Be on the lookout for small thoughtful luxuries, including a tiny dish of chocolate kisses and a vase of freshly cut purple lupines. I would recommend this inn for couples, singles, and families of a gentle and polite disposition. I'll be back!
