Decent meal to be had here in a divey, large diner-style restaurant that blends Mexican and American food. My favorite part of the decor are the beautifully painted portraits of beach themes, such as a perky crab and colorful octopus, or the people in kayaks. They appear to be painted by a local artist, and are available for purchase. The best part of this dining experience is the "local color." The people who come in here are truly interesting and seem decent and down to earth. Small town folks. This is a good perch to soak up the feeling and culture of the area. The staff is serviceable, but forgetful. You may have to remind them to bring you a refresh of chips, salsa, refills, part of your order, or your bill, but if you are in no hurry, no problem. (Don't come here in a hurry. We waited approximately 40 minutes for our appetizers).
The quesadilla, rice, and refried beans were solid. The beans tasted homemade, with smoky flavor. The rice was a perfect foil for them. The carne asada tacos were a bit plain, but there was no arguing that the meat was tender and perfectly cooked.
The tamales were not what we were expecting. They were covered not in corn husks, but in a red enchilada sauce, and the shredded beef within was not a complement to it. The guacamole was utterly flavorless. Like maybe the avocado was stored in too cool temperatures in the fridge. I eat avocado as if it were a sport, so I know when an avocado has been badly treated!
Chips and salsa were very good. The salsa is muy picante! You might have to ask them to tone down the spice for you, or get sour cream and mix it in to cool it down.
They don't sell bottled water, but they do offer club soda and other beverages.
