The world’s best glacier destinations - SilverKris

"A much‑photographed glacial lagoon fed by the great icefield, famous for floating icebergs and dramatic reflections that attract photographers and sightseers. It provides iconic, close‑up views of calved ice and is commonly combined with nearby glacier excursions." - SilverKris

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of the most awe-inspiring places in Iceland. Watching enormous icebergs break away from the glacier and drift silently through the lagoon is absolutely mesmerising. The colours of the ice — whites, blues and deep crystal tones — are stunning, especially as the light changes. Seals often pop up around the ice, adding to the magic. Calm, powerful and otherworldly, this is a must-visit destination that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve gone.

Jökulsáón Glacier Lagoon is always amazing to see. It can get very crowded especially during the summer months. There are three lots and you can walks between the beaches to get to the other diamonds. The lagoon itself is amazing to see and definitely worth the stop.

Definitely one of Iceland’s must-see places! We were planning to take the boat tour, but did not get booked early enough, and they were sold out. However, we enjoyed walking along the shore and taking in the spectacular view of the icebergs and the lagoon. I think you can enjoy the lagoon nearly as often in the shore as you could from a boat, but I’m sure the boat ride would still be pretty amazing as well.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is an absolute must-see in Iceland. This iconic geographical feature is where massive blocks of ice and small icebergs float serenely in a stunning lake. The lagoon connects to the sea at Diamond Beach, where you can see ice chunks scattered across the black sand. For an up-close experience, I highly recommend booking a boat tour in advance, as slots are limited and fill up quickly. The tour takes you into the heart of the lagoon, offering breathtaking views of the floating ice and the massive glacier that feeds into the lake. It's a truly unforgettable sight!

Easy parking on both sides of the highway. This is a must see in Iceland. Truly breathtaking. Fun to watch the seals swimming amongst the broken pieces of glacier.

We hadn’t planned on visiting this location, but added it in when we saw how close it was to Diamond Beach and WOW! We were NOT disappointed! It. Is. BREATHTAKING. In addition to icebergs, we also got to see a few types of birds (common eiders are quite amusing to watch) and seals! The walk is easy, the views are glorious. Definitely add this stop to your list if you’re in the area.
