Visiting Africa for the First Time: A Black American's Story

"A welcoming point of entry where efficient but thorough customs procedures are paired with personable staff interactions; a visa mix-up was handled kindly by a supervisor who explained regional visa options, and the overall arrival experience contrasted positively with less-friendly encounters elsewhere, helping the traveler feel immediately at ease." - Kwin Mosby Kwin Mosby Kwin Mosby is a travel journalist and the editor-in-chief of Vacationer Magazine, an LGBTQ+ travel website. Jika Airport in Nairobi is truly a well-organized and efficiently managed airport. From my first visit, I was impressed by the cleanliness and the high level of security in place. The staff are professional, friendly, and always ready to assist passengers, even during busy hours with long queues. You can tell that the airport management puts real effort into improving services and ensuring customer satisfaction. The location of the airport is convenient and easy to access, especially for travelers arriving by car or taxi. There is plenty of parking space, and the area feels safe and well-maintained. Inside the terminal, there are several food outlets and small cafés offering quality meals and drinks at reasonable prices. Although the airport is primarily used for cargo and business flights, it still provides a safe, comfortable, and reliable experience for anyone traveling through. I also appreciate the airport's commitment to cleanliness and environmental care. The cleaning staff are constantly working to keep every area spotless. Free Wi-Fi is available in some sections of the airport, which is very helpful for travelers who want to work or stay connected with their families while waiting for their flight. Overall, Jika Airport is a place I would highly recommend to anyone looking for efficient, secure, and comfortable air travel services. It is one of the most organized airports in Nairobi, and I hope the management continues to improve and expand its facilities to reach even higher international standards.

JKIA works. It serves its primary purpose of connecting travelers to and from Kenya. It has all the essential services you need, but it lacks the polish and comfort of some other major international hubs. It's neither a terrible nor a fantastic airport—it's simply normal. Tip: If you have a long layover, consider investing in access to one of the airport lounges for more comfortable seating, better food, and quieter surroundings.

Nairobi Airport is not very big and feels quite old. The cleanliness could definitely be improved, as the facilities don’t feel very well maintained. Unfortunately, the staff are not particularly friendly or welcoming, which makes the experience less pleasant. There are many shops, but the prices are not cheap, so shopping there isn’t very appealing. The smoking areas are especially disappointing — one small area outside and another inside the airport, both dirty and without proper ventilation or fans. Overall, the airport works for basic transit, but it could really benefit from upgrades in cleanliness, staff service, and amenities.

Worthy of an international airport, the first time I was there I got quite lost before finding the terminal. The facilities are truly beautiful, the location magnificent, and there are plenty of services to ensure a comfortable and peaceful journey. I loved it.

Had the experience of travelling to this airport during our recent Kenya trip. All formalities were completed fast on arrival from India at 5.30AM. The arrival lounge was pretty old looking and missing the modern day look of an airport. The departure terminal was comparatively modern. We were in 1C. But the process and formalities were carried out fast.

Nice airport in Nairobi that serves its primary purpose. Arrivals were a bit hectic, with long queues at immigration and even longer waiting times for luggage and customes, understandable when several flights land at the same time. Be careful, as the luggage belt can change without any update on the screens! On the positive side, the staff are very helpful and always available to support. Departure was smoother. However, the gates feel cramped, with rows of seating interfering with the walking path and reducing accessibility. If you plan to buy souvenirs here, be aware that prices are triple (or even more) compared to outside for the exact same items!

It's actually quite a functional airport, compared to places like Amsterdam.. best to arrive/depart at night - avoid the Nairobi traffic.. skip the queue on passport control by using UN/diplomats and such counters..

The arrival terminal felt quite small and dated, giving an old impression. However, the departure experience at Terminal 1C was much better, with modern facilities and a pleasant environment. Security checks and the immigration process were handled very smoothly and efficiently, making the overall departure experience comfortable.
