On the Grid : Jonas Reindl Coffee

"Though a guy called "Jonas Reindl" is not existing, this café is especially authentic and charming. Maybe because the owner and his father collected the interior for years now - and some of the pieces are more than 100 years old. Their coffee - try the Aeropress brewed one - is excellent and they even offer coffee by changing guest roasters to guarantee variety. In spring and summer there are some seats outside, but just take your drink to go and find a spot in Sigmund-Freud-Park across the street." - Maximilian Mauracher

1. There’s a good amount of space, and the crowd is often made up of people working or studying, so you won’t feel out of place with your laptop. 2. However, it can get a little too loud at times, which might be distracting if you need a quieter environment for focus. The noise level is not unusual for coffee shops, but if you’re sensitive to sound, it could be an issue 3. The coffee itself is decent—not exceptional, but reliably good for a workday pick-me-up. 4. On the plus side, the café is vegan-friendly, offering plant-based options for both drinks and snacks, which is a big plus for those with dietary preferences or restrictions. ( I am not vegan).

During my short trip to Vienna, I visited this spot twice. The first time, I had a croissant with vanilla and a cappuccino with oat milk, both were fantastic. On my second visit, I tried the tiramisu cake, a flat white, and, of course, had to get the vanilla croissant again. Coffee is great there. The lady at the counter was friendly, welcoming, and had a lovely smile.

Google
Marvelous no frills coffee shop right in the center of the city. Easily accessible from so many hotels in the historic area. The barista’s make a wonderful cappuccino and the croissants are delish!

Amazing affogato with pistacchio gelato. Jonas Reindl was of my saved spots for coffee in Vienna, but I believe the coffee alone is a bit overpriced, so I decided to treat myself an affogato: best decision I made. The pistacchio gelato ball it was amazing and pairing perfectly with the Espresso shot. Make sure to have a seat outside with the view of the beautiful Votivkirche. Inside has also cozy seating spot, but it can be loud if it's full.

Google
Really one of the best coffees in town, next to my regulars Vogel, Pirate and the tiny place in the Palais F. In the Innenstadt near Freyburg Even my Croissant was warm!!

Google
It delicious coffee beans. They have 3 kinds of beans but nobody don’t say anything about this. I oreder cappuccino for 4,5 euro and that was not the best cappuccino in my life. The staff is not friendly and here is not a cozy place

Roadbiker 1060 (Best shop in da universe)

Google
Hands down best coffee in town!! Staff offers phenomenal service and friendliness 🙌 I often come with my roadbike and never had a problem there even though there's limited space. Bravo 👏 A "must visit" for all cyclists passing by Vienna.

Google
Great coffee spot in Vienna. Well located & near public transportation. You have options to choose which beans they’ll use for your coffee which is very nice. They also sell their coffee beans and other coffee equipment. The place was packed when we arrived, allows people to work with laptops in certain tables & pet friendly too. (We spotted a very cute dog by the doorway)

Yelp
Been here three times over the years and it doesn't disappoint. Third wave coffee roasters that get the best of the beans out-sweet aromas in a very relaxed setting.

Yelp
Great service. Very delicious croissant and coffee. Easygoing, relaxed - mix of English and German speaking so no language barrier if you don't speak German. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Such a cute coffee place. The food and coffee were so good that we came back 3 times! Service was fantastic and everyone was very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
Not much to say but the coffee was absolutely exceptional. The vibe they have inside the store is great too, lots of plants and places to sit. They also have a glass window where you can watch the beans being made.
google avatar

Yelp
What a vibe. Delicious coffee drinks made and served by friendly staff, surrounded by energetic young people. Pretty much the platonic ideal of a European university coffee shop.

Yelp
Great place to grab some coffee and a lovely cake! I kinda accidentally stumbled upon this gem when looking for a quick "breakfast" before heading home. The cappuccino was great, the cake - Carrot Lemon Cake - was amazing. Will be back next time I'm in town

Yelp
Super friendly staff and the best coffee. I had cold Cappuccino and it was delicious. High quality coffee.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop that's conveniently close to the U-Bahn Schottentor station and the University of Vienna! They're almost always crowded/busy so it might be a challenge to claim a table for yourself. I've come here earlier in the day and I didn't have a problem securing a spot. The cortado and cappuccino are strong, thus enabling me to power through all the readings that I do. Also important to note -- wifi is free, fast, tried, true, & tested. The workers have all been friendly so far. If you don't speak German, don't worry - their English is also quite good! Their pastries always look so freaking tempting. They have cheesecakes, banana bread, all sorts of Austrian cakes. One day I shall indulge and treat myself. My only gripe with this coffee shop is the fact that because they're always busy, conversations can be super distracting if you've come here to focus on your studies. Don't forget the headphones. Looking forward to collecting more stamps on my stamp card for a free cup of coffee! Score.

Yelp
INDIE coffee ARRIVED in VIENNA. Vienna is famous for historic coffee houses with classic Viennese Kaffee. Jonas Reindl is 21st century fair trad single origin organic and very extracted. Artisan baristas can prepare macchiatos, cortados, cold brews and pour overs. Fresh roasted. Sit inside or out. Sandwiches wine/kombucha and excellent chai! The coffee is awesome. I've never found this kind of cafe in Austria before.
google avatar

Nataly K.

Yelp
Very good coffee! You would find a lot of different types of coffee here. They offer also homemade pies, cookies and sandwiches. Extremely friendly service! It's a pleasure for me to be here.

Yelp
This place more than deserves it's 5-star rating. I am glad that I too had a 5-Star experience. Cafe is a bit un-Viennese. There is no smoking, no food (Aside from cakes), and no newspapers. They also offer filter coffee. Design overall is much cleaner (simpler) than very Viennese cafes. It is similar to a small cafe in the United States. The kind where people come to enjoy their coffee, work on their computers, and spend time with friends. They have a relatively selection of beverages and cakes. Yet, I still find this is more than enough to keep it interesting. This is because you have a choice of three different kinds of coffees, which are organic and fair trade. I had the "Square Mile"? Filter coffee and the cake with Apple slices on top (forgot the name). Filter coffee, rather than being poured out of a large decanter, is ground when you order, and filtered by hand (barista carefully pours water through the filter). Suffice it to say, when I got my coffee and tried it, I mouthed "This is F***ing delicious". Excuse my French, but it really was. The coffee temperature was excellent; hot, but drinkable right away. Also, I usually take my coffee with milk, but with this one, I didn't even feel the need to ask for it, no sugar really needed either. The cake I had was the one that had the little apple slices on top. What a pleasant surprise! I have found that too many Austrian cakes run a little on the dry side. This was moist all the way through. It was also not overly sweet, the sweetest was the jam separating the cake from the apples, very pleasant too! Consistency was a bit... um, earthy? I didn't like this too much, but after the third bite, it grew on me. A little pricey, but that is to be expected with organic/fair trade items. Service was wicked nice! ... I do however have a few constructive criticisms of this place. First, it would have been nice if I was offered milk or cream for my coffee. Second, it came with no spoon or stirrer to add sugar (available at each table).

Yelp
My fav coffee shop in Vienna so far, but it's small and finding a place to sit is hard. Very cozy and the vibes are awesome. Lots and lots of delicious cakes and the espresso is yummy. Love that they have a stamp card too!

Yelp
You can say what you want about Viennese Coffee House Culture (VCHC) but it's not all about imperial flair, though it's much about it. And in contrast to the aristocratic atmosphere of a Konzert Café Schwarzenberg for instance here we find ourselves in this lovely, cosy, WiFi supported coffee shop called Café Jonas Reindl, named after the tram hub Jonas-Reindl (at Schottentor) to honor Franz Josef Jonas, a Viennese mayor and later Bundespräsident (president) of Austria. As you can see in the picture above (and good observers also recognize me in the photo) this Café has plenty of sunshine all-day long until the evening hours (until the Café closes Monday to Friday at 19:30 / 7:30 pm and Saturday's at 21:30 / 9:30 pm) and through the whole year due to its convenient location at Sigmund-Freud-Park right next to the University of Vienna, Vienna's main University, established in 1365, what makes it one of the oldest Universities in the world. Also in the grey and gloomy winter months Vienna has also its fair share of this sunny location can be a true life-savior. The patio is ideal to collect all the sun Vienna has to offer. Inside Café Jonas Reindl it feels a bit like being at Starbucks but Café Jonas Reindl's prices are much more reasonable. You order your choice at the counter and soon after the very friendly staff brings your order to your table. And to your delicious coffee you get also a glass of water to keep everything in balance if you know what I mean, since water is healthy and it's the most healthy you can get in any coffee shop. Above it catches your eye in no time that my cappuccino comes from heart. The coffee is creamy as the poppy-seed cake is fluffy. Both are super delicious. With Love! Dr. Dr. Immanuel Fruhmann

Yelp
Cozy coffee place that has a nice mix of tourists and locals. There is plenty of seating inside and outside but it may seem not because the cafe can get busy. The coffee is not as good as I expected, but it is still better than the multitude of Vienna's cafes. The pastry selection is good as well. Friendly service too.

Yelp
One of the pioneers of the Third wave of coffee in Vienna and a welcome break from the Viennese style coffee places as these guys actually serve decent coffee. This is conveniently located close to the university and that coupled with free wifi and a relaxed attitude towards people sitting long with laptops makes it packed with students. The coffee here's great compared to the average cup of coffee available and there's a selection of beans to select between so they clearly take their coffee seriously. My four star rating is also related to the local comparisons so while the coffee is not world class it is good. The baristas are skilled albeit I tend to agree with some other reviewers that the service is not exactly warm and friendly but I am also not sure if that was a language issue more than anything else. The environment is ok but they do somehow manage to get more of a Starbucks feel than an independently owned cafe.

Yelp
Stopped here to meet up with a student, and it was the perfect place to do so! I had a slice of cake and a single-shot cappuccino, and they went SO well together. The ambience is not too loud, and all the earthy colors made it relaxing. We stayed there for two hours just chatting and probably would have stayed longer if it hadn't closed. Check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, the coffee came quickly and hot (except the amazing iced late ). We also got a chocolate cake that was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in Vienna! And, they have oat milk-- a must try for any coffee lover in Vienna!! One of the best coffee shops we visited while traveling through Germany/Austria/Switzerland!
google avatar

Cornelia P.

Yelp
Every time I come back to visit my family in Vienna, I'm looking for a cool modern coffee place that also offers a pretty decent-speed-wifi. Furthermore, I'm looking for a place where people actually also work with their laptops for hours and where I can also get pretty decent coffee. This place has got it all and more!! It's my new favorite place to come and work when staying in Austria for a few weeks. The staff is not only friendly but they also got a rocking cold brew and yummy pastries/cakes as well as sandwiches. Definitely give this place a try when you're in the are. You'll barely ever find tourists here and I like the low-key atmosphere of the place,
google avatar

Yelp
This place is not great for only coffee lover. They also offer you tea, soft drinks, beer and wine. The location is perfectly situated, not far from Stephanplatz and you can have a nice view of Votivkirche.
google avatar

Jake S.

Yelp
Great place to get good coffee, close to the sights. Features include free WiFi, cold brew, filter coffee, and craft brews.
google avatar

Adriana K.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great coffee! Very hipster. They had delicious lattes and actually had cups for take away coffee, too! They also had a selection of cold juices and drinks, and some tasty looking snacks. Very convenient location, and quick, friendly service.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, great location, and awesome baristas. What else could you ask for?!! @takemetothecoffeshop ig

Yelp
Great Coffee, but cash only service. No gluten free options either. But barista knows his stuff!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Coffee: 4.5 Atmosphere: 5 Coffee: 4.5 Really solid coffee. Thoroughly enjoyed their espresso, and their lattes n such are similarly tasty. I've tried their espresso when they were doing Workshop coffee and Sūssmund. The shot of the Rwanda espresso I had was wonderfully bright with notes of cloves (really interesting combo). Atmosphere: 5 Wow. I absolutely love the vibe of this shop. Very open air, with a spectacular view of the park and church across the street. Outdoor and indoor seating are both great--outdoor for conversation, and indoor for studying.
google avatar

Denys K.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere indeed. Maybe not spacious enough and gets crowded quite easily, but it's very popular among students as it's close to University of Vienna and has some great affordable coffee. Frankly, my first impression was a great one. Looking forward to coming back soon.
google avatar

Wilfried S.

Yelp
Best cold brew I ever had! Transparent supply chain and responsible sourcing. Zwetschentart (plum) was like home-made and organic. Definitely will visit again.
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
One of the best cappuccino/espresso I ever had in Wien. Milk alternatives available for vegans. Fast service and pleasant baristas.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Quick service and loved the coffee! The cold brew was refreshing and had a pleasant bitterness. I came back another day and the latte was pretty well balanced - the espresso was not overbearing in bitterness and you could taste the the underlying flavors. The atmosphere of the cafe was pretty nice as well. Maybe it's because the University of Vienna is close by, but it's similar to "third-wave" coffeeshops in the US (Blue Bottle, Philz Coffee) and stands out from the traditional sit-down cafes that Vienna offers, such as Cafe Central. There was a handful of people studying, reading, as well as engaging in casual conversation. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Vienna.
google avatar

Hailley G.

Yelp
Beautiful cafe. Kind staff. Delicious beverages and pastries. I was only in Vienna for a week and I came back here 4 times. The wifi is very strong, I worked for a few hours and even had a video call. The atmosphere is chatty with people holding meetings and talking to friends as well as quite a few other people working from laptops. Location is incredible. If you take your coffee to go you can walk to a lovely park across the road.

Daniel S.

Yelp
We tried this coffee shop based on its Yelp ranking. It was everything others indicated. The coffee was superb. The service was courteous and very professional (and bilingual). The shop is good sized, with plenty of room for sitting. It has a mellow vibe. We were in Vienna for 4 days and began each day with a visit to Jonas Reindl. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Paulina H.

Yelp
Great place to work and have a delicious snack with a cup of tea! Service is excellent, place is lovely and has the option to sit outside.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
My New Yorker boyfriend and I originally came for the pastrami sandwiches. No sandwiches in sight, but I find my new favorite cafe in Vienna. The coffee is amongst the best I have had in Vienna in a beautiful location across the street from the Schottentor tram hub. Even better, this cafe has the most available electrical plugs per table to work away on your computer. Hey this stuff is important! Computer or not, Cafe Jonas Reindl ranks in the top three of my Vienna cafes. Also about that pastrami sandwich, the owners have occasional invite-only pastrami nights.
google avatar

Melanie O.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, tasty cakes, nice staff, and the interior style is on point. It can get crowded sometimes but it's worth a little wait.
google avatar

Cody D.

Yelp
Not cheap, as the single € sign suggests, but worth the price in a city filled with overpriced coffee and cakes. The cappuccino was the best I've had in Europe, the service quick and kind, and the ambiance quaint and comfortable.
google avatar

Connie B.

Yelp
Best cappucino in town! It was smooth and flavorful! The two guys who run the place were very knowledgable about coffee and the roasting process. I learned a lot in just 2 hours. They gave tips on what to look out for when walking into a cafe and when it's wise to walk out again. The ambience is modern yet rustic and comfortable. It is entirely NON-SMOKING!!! Yay!!!! And try the sweets while you are there. Delicious!
google avatar

Benyamin K.

Yelp
perfect location, across the main university building, perfect place if you like to watch people passing by. despite their good coffee, baristas are not that friendly. if a customer doesn't hear you at once, you shouldn't morn after repeating your sentence. i visited the place three times in four days. i even bought four packs of coffee too, but i wouldn't go there again. summary: coffee is good, manners are not. (except one blonde guy)
google avatar

Silja K.

Yelp
Absolutely pleasant coffee break every time I've been here! Their coffee is excellent and sweet/ savoury bites delicious - avocado sandwich was my favourite! The decor is nicely modern and the cafe is completely non-smoking! They've also got a few table outside now when the weather is finally getting better. The location is also perfect, just a few steps from the busy Schottentor station - once at the cafe all that hustle and fuss are gone though!
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Atmosphere is similar to independent hipster coffee shops in Canada. We tried a feta cheese sandwich, iced cappuccino and iced latte. The sandwich was pretty good, but the iced coffee was nothing special. They tasted similar to iced coffees you can get in McDonald's. Location is great close to the subway station.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Simple and clean inside. The coffee was pretty good but not mind-blowing 5 star coffee. It seemed like your typical independent coffee shop to be honest. The sandwiches were decent too.
google avatar

Undine O.

Yelp
Almost impossible to get a seat but once you do, you will see that this place is great - amazing coffee and staff. In spring I suggest you try to sit outside and observe the busy life of Viennese students rushing to their lectures :) also good for coffee to go!
google avatar

Claudia G.

Yelp
The best coffee we ventured upon while in Vienna. We are from the LA area and take our coffee serious and this place offers the pleasant coffee experience with its variety of brewing coffee. It's not your typical European "cafe" where ordering a black coffee will get you an espresso with water (Americano). Their cold brew is also amazing and very refreshing during the summer months. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Friendly staff and a really great large latte! Also, fast wifi makes working here nice (although maybe a bit awkward on a Saturday night). Only downside is they are closed Sunday (like most of Vienna).
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
The best coffee and experience I have ever had. We travel a lot and love excellent coffee. We got it here. The barista absolutely knew what he was talking about. The cafe is light and open with comfortable tables and chairs. Service was outstanding and my brownie was delicious. We stayed long enough for a second hot drink and their tea choices were very good also. Recommend this place without any reservations.
google avatar

Shaky T.

Yelp
Super nice plays with good coffee. Prices are kinda ok, if you are backpacking with low budget maybe try another place. Otherwise this is cozy and great. Cool staff as well!
google avatar

Douglas L.

Yelp
Cold brew. Pour overs. Aeropress. Best coffee I've had in days. I needed this slice of home after a few weeks of travel. Cash only so bring some Euros.

D P.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. Simple as that. A family of full blown coffee snobs sampled a few options while enjoying the ambiance of a true coffee specialist. A welcomed reprieve from wannabe baristas simply pushing buttons on an automated machine.
google avatar

Raphael M.

Yelp
Super nice staff. It was crowed when I went there. The coffee is really good. They offer tons of different coffees with different brewing methods. I didn't try their food but it looked quite good. I enjoyed it there. They don't do table service its self service which is rare for a Viennese coffee place (I like it). The interior is modern and clean. A recommendation if you are in the area!
google avatar

Lydia I.

Yelp
Great coffee shop in a great location. Perfect for relaxing with a book or your laptop. I stayed here all afternoon studying and the cappuccino I had was delicious.
